Mahmudullah Riyad- a failed investment?
Since the time of Siddons we have tried to stick with a particular set of players - Tamim, Mushy, Shakib, Riad, Mash. These 5 players are still playing till today.
Tamim, Mushy, Shakib are among the better players in the side and have no replacements.
But I am very much dissappointed with Riyad these days. He has 10 years of international experience and he can't score a century in tests, and barring those twin centuries in World cup and cameos in T20Is he hasn't done enough really to help Bangladesh at all.
Now, not discarding Riad's ability. He is an able batsman but he has been a part of BD squad consistently for 10 years without ever getting dropped. He had the facilities and high profile coaches. And despite all that he continues to struggle in tests and ODI(up the order) and his fielding is woeful, keeps on dropping catches.
The question is whether we really should have used our resources to focus more on the likes of Shahriar Nafees or Anamul Haque, both who have as many if not more hundreds in ODIs as Riad if not more? Anamul is a keeper not to mention a better fielder than Riad. With Mosaddek and Miraz who are contenders in LOI side I don't think Riad should think his side in the ODI and test side will be permanent. Still deserve to be in T20Is based on his performance.
Oh yes we needed a senior player, but which senior player:
1) Acts dead in the field
2) Drop catches and fumbles often, especially the latter.
3) Gives his wickets away in crucial moments of the match
4) Scores back to back to 1 digit scores when his team needs him
Also, these days his bowling isn't needed with Mosaddek and Miraz. Perhaps its time to move on? Because certainly I am quite frustrated with Riad.
Before someone bashes me, let me tell you this. An international cricketer with 250+ match experience should have much better performance than what Riad is offering.

Honestly, the better investment for me was to sleep when Bangladesh were sent in to bat for the last hour instead of watching the match because I knew Bangladesh will try very hard to make a match out of this.
Draw still.

He is going to score a 50 next match and solidify his spot further.
Anyways, senior bloc won't allow him being dropped.

I am the biggest fan of Riyad but I feel like if he doesnt become more consistent soon then he will go down as a failed investment. I know the moment he gets dropped he will come back and continue to be that player that is good enough. But i expected more from him. He has the brains, he has the technique, he has the maturity.... but he just cant string it together. I think he is that player that needs to be at gunpoint every time to perform and thats not a sign of an experienced player.
really want him to perform because he is the perfect fit for the batting order we have. Players like Mosaddek or Nazmul need more years before they can be considered regulars in int cricket.

I agree with you 100% MHRM. I would still take Ryad in my fantasy league, but he is completely useless in this series.

Maybe you are right. But in tests only.In the ODI team, you will have to put many more heads on the chopping block before you can come to Riyad's.

He used to be a grafter and nowadays he doesnt have the patience to stick around the wicket. He can't build an innings anymore. He used to have a uncanny ability to do those gritty type of knocks. That was his best asset about him, the ability to just churn runs. But after the World Cup success and also in T20s he is just a finisher now. Carting Boult, Southee in swing conditions of NZ got into his head. He is a shoe in for odis and t20s still but in ODIs he should really be batting at 6 and Mushy should be at 4. Him and Mosaddek would be a real good duo to finish games for us.
He should in no way shape or form be batting at 4 in tests. He should either bat at 6 or 7 and thats it. But those spots are taken. Hence we really need to invest in a person to fill in the shoes at no. 4 in tests. I dont wanna put Mosaddek there at 4 yet but what i wouldn't mind doing is putting Mushy at 4 and investing in Nurul Hasan in the lower order so that Nurul can keep in tests. He seems like the perfect lower order test batsman. I'd have wanted Mosaddek in the team but it would be only for the no.6 or no. 7 slot.

Yh this isn't a knee jerk reaction before anyone says it
He's been poor for a while
Nasir would be a better choice, he's not great, but he'll give you 15 overs and a 40-50 and he never throws his wicket away that easily

Average 30 in test for last 5 years. HS is 76. And some people thinks he should be the next captain

Riyad has been an immense disappointment. He was already sucking before WC 2015 and we wanted his head. He scored those centuries and we kept quiet. But , WC was 2 years ago. Since theb, he has scored appallingly. Mgmt need to kick him out like Soumya. Heck, Soumya had less chances than Riyad!

Ryad will score a 50+ in next Test and stick around.
In case he fails in next Test I would like Nasir or Mosad to replace him against India.

As soon as a youngster is ready, and that could be mosaddek or shanto, Riyad's spot probably should go to them, they'll probably have a similar output to what riyad does now but being young will have the chance to become even better.

Big fail in terms of test cricker. Boot this lazy azz back to domestic, needs more fc to learn the art of longer version. Bring in Mossadekk, who is a better offspinner on a consistent basis can bowl tight and well, plus good fielder too.

Yep - agree with you on Nurul. Bri g him in place of Miraz if he doesn't perform in 4th innings. I was impressed by Nurul's batting in ODIs

My only issue is after that many years in International cricket why can't he USE HIS BRAINS?
One after another every test he is doing this. Right before the session ends he gets out with uncalled for SILLY outs.
Against Pakistan test gets out 49. Worst time possible. Second innings gets out after putting in hard work at 40.
2nd test, 8 overs to go for the day. He is well set at 28. He gets out.
Against SA, well set at 35 in the last session of the day, flicks it to short mid wicket of steyn. Gets out.
Against England 1st test, well set at 38, last ball before tea, he gets out of Adil Rashid. What a bummer.
2nd innings, shall I cut and paste? He is well set at 17 was out there for 40 minutes. He gets out. This was the match we lost by 22.
Against England 2nd test, 5 overs to go for tea. He had scored 13, gets out with no footwork. As if not interested to play. Because of that Bd loses 2 more wickets before tea. Triggers a mini collapse. From a demanding position in span of few minutes England were in to our tail.
The second innings out I wish I could type all in caps. The one we won, he gets out in the last ball of the day at 47. Why?
And now against NZ the two outs.
1st innings going after a wide delivery unnecessarily. Brain fart. That too few minutes before the close of the day. What a joker.
I thought he would play wisely in the second innings. Well I might have been expecting too much of these "gadhas" to use their brains. Repeat of England test. We lose another wicket to end the day.

I've never been so disgusted with a player, the worst part is I know he won't be dropped for the foreseeable future. He will justify his spot with nice little 30s when there is no pressure, or a 50 if its Eid, and score gorgeous 1s and 0s when we need him the most. He will look like a million bucks in our B grade mickey mouse tournament and fool people into thinking he's a legend

Too many Mamadulla fanboys here hence not many will call for his head. As we know we Bengalis have tendencies to get easily satisfied since Riyad scored two WC gems (even though it was in a different format) it basically means he plays for another 5years (counting from the time he scored the two gems of tons in the WC).
This dude, Mahmadulla (as Dujon calls it). Has been the key weaklink for millions of years, yet gets away with mediocrity in test cricket. BD literally playing with a long tail including Mullah who is just batting hypothetically up there at top 4 but in truth he is not any better than a solid tail ender at test, someone like Broad can hang about more and scored a 150 plus too!.

The most Ironic thing is there was a time when Riyad was a superslow batsmen (but sensible enough to use his brain and remain not out) now he is one of the best t20 batsmen in Bangladesh but lost his sensible approach to batting

I hv expected lot more from riyad. To be frank, i havent seen him this bad. There must be something else going on in his life. This was the most unusual riyad tour.

No, no it wasn't
This was the usual typical mahmadullah
He's never preformed in tests
Hell, go back to the England match threads and I was predicting when he was going to get out and guess what I picked correctly every time
