"I know there are at least two players in our team who are going to become household names throughout the world.
‘I don’t want to name names because that would be putting pressure on them, but we are in the process of building stars for the future and we have a lot of talent,’ he added." Whatmore NewAge (http://www.newagebd.com/spt.html)

Wow !!!! Thats a bold statement. Who are those two?

Enamul ?
Nafis ?
Mushrafe?

howzatt!
May 9, 2005, 02:45 PM
i guess these two are among:

1) mushfiqur rahim
2) enamul
3) nafis
4) ashraful

maybe mashrafee too, but i don't thnk he'll stand out among other world class pacers.

I would say Mashrafee and Enamul.

I personally have high hopes for Aftab. He has got something..

In time Mashrafee can become a very good all rounder. Power hitting abilities are well noticed in world cricket and he can hit with the best.

One is Enamul surely.

Who is the other one?

Masri is surely one them... in the DS report for the press conference at Fenner, whatmore said that masrafee deserved to play in the rest of the world team.

I think enamul/Ashraful or Aftab might be the other. I think all of them have the potential to become household names.

I expect Tapash to get really fired up. Everybody is talking about Mashrafee and Rajib the speedstar..Watch out for Tapash. The conditions are ideal for him..

 I have a feeling that after this series Mashrafee will be known as Bangla Mcgrath. I won't be surprised if he turns out to be the leading wicket taker of the series!

Nannu.

This thread is as fast as a game thread.

If Whatmore thinks Mashrafee should have played in the world XI, then he must be the other one (besides Enamul)

We are far from producing a world class batsman.

Nafees Iqbal with 30+ avg and Ashraful with 40 avg last year by itself .

Bashar said , Bangladesh will field if they win the toss according to Daily Star news today .Rajin Saleh is due to make a test hundred as well as Aftab Ahmed then we will have all our specialist batsmen having hundred in the tests . That's a great feeling.

I say he is indicating Nafees Iqbal and Mashrafee.

To me, Iqbal is as talented as Ash if not more. My impression about Ash is he just bang a big score then goes flop. On the other hand, Nafees is a real fighter who is consistantly scoring.

Bangla amar Maa

it's all here in his comments :
At last players have begun to find their feet, in particular batsmen Habibul Bashar and Rajin Saleh, young all-rounder Aftab Ahmed and Enamul Haque jnr and Mohammed Rafique, left-arm spinners.

so , he mentioned few of them already .

and the one is : BANGLADESH.

None of our batsmen look like they will be superstar....wat do u mean by superstar? someone like tendulkar? Lara? Dravid.........and Not Ramprakash.......who has the best technique and talent in England..but his svg still 26 after 50 odd test matches............We have not come to that stage yet where by we can produce truely world class batsmen.....

Masree and enamul are only option left

Mashrafe although one of the key players in the Bd team has not done what Enamul has done.

Enamul is a match winner and virttully single handedly won one of the tests against Zimbabwe.

Enamul did that on a spinnig track against a side who are not that good playing spin.

You are right, Mashrafee won't be able to achive that fit, because even in seaming pitches of England he will face batters who are masters of facing pace.

Masri played the match winning role in our ODI win over India.

Musfique

Zimbabwe aren't probably strong as many club sides in the Surrey League, England. So that analysis is rather subjective.......btw iimk not undrmining his huge talent.

Whereas Masree consistently played well against the best.

Ashraful is already a little starlet to many. But unless he becomes more consistent, he will never become a "household name".

I'm interested to see how Enamul Jnr fairs in England, whether he's a one hit wonder or the next best thing since sliced bread.

yes, from our team, ashraful is the one who is closest to becoming a household name. he's definitely the most popular bangladeshi cricketer in outside world. and if he does his talent justice, he'll definitely become a familiar face to all.

on i do believe the other one closest to this is mashrafe. he has talent, but what makes him stand out is his desire to fight, to win. he's the true fighter on our team (no disrespect to sujon), who is also talented. his late order hitting capabilities is already almost at world class level.

ash is the most famous cricketer from BD.

whatmore said 2 superstars would become household names.

i think he said that because he thought that two of them should at least make it. but there are more. whatmore was just covering his arse in case all of them didn't develop.

the possible superstars from BD are:

ash
mashrafee
nafis
aftab
enamul
shahadat
rahim
shariar nafees

I want to keep my mouth shut until I see the BD boys score 300+ in the 1st Test.
Lets hope the match will go into the 4th day

i cant resist but join this daring show of guessing names!

My guesses to match Dav's prediction would be none other than Enamul Jr and OUR Laxman/Dravid - Aftab Ahmed.

Dhakablues
May 9, 2005, 11:11 PM
Amazed that none mentioned any of the senior players. Did Dav mention that its a new sensation? I think the superstar could be Mohammed Rafique, Could be Bashar as well. There are some media fascinations about certain players... especially the young ones but dont forget the senior players, they are the ones who made us come this far....

jabbar
May 9, 2005, 11:12 PM
enamul and mashrafee

also, ash and bashar (yep, u heard me, bashar - there's life in the old dog yet...)

Mahir
May 9, 2005, 11:23 PM
what comes to mind when you hear the phrase "superstars IN THE MAKING" ? Its logical to presume that the senior players are already MADE and they cant get reborn and be remade as superstars.... they are what they are, and we will only hope they improve on whatever they are. Their contribution to BD cricket will never be doubted.

Nafees Iqbal with 30+ avg and Ashraful with 40 avg last year by itself .

I have my doubts about Nafees Iqbal. His 30+ average - most of his good scores were against Zimbabwe, and other games were on good batting pitches of Bangladesh.

About Ashraful - I have been always supporting him even when he was really out of form, before he scored that 35 ball 50 against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe. But I know this for sure that I will not personally support Ashraful during the England tour, England is not the place for a stroke maker like him, not at this time anyway.

We are completely forgetting Rajin.. I think he will be our test star in future..

al Furqaan
May 10, 2005, 11:21 AM
rajin is my favorite player, but he has been left out of everyone's list including mine since he doesn't have the flair of ashraful, the power of mashrafee, the elegance of aftab, etc.

rajin will be a tremendous player, but he will do it in a way that i can not describe here. he is tough and gritty. he is bangladesh's dravid. the best batsmen of his kind (right now the only one of his kind). just as dravid lacks tendulkar's class and sehwag's power, so too is rajin different from his batting mates.

different but no less important or great. unfortunately, becoming a "household" name is just like a popularity contest. rajin's style will win over less fans than ashraful's tho he is equally productive (or even more so). such are the facts of reality.
