The Bangladesh Cricket Board is going to build a modern academy around Fatullah Stadium.

Board president Ali Asghar disclosed this after a leading consulting firm, SMEC, presented the cricket boss with a formal letter proposing the preparation of a preliminary masterplan for the new academy at a reception yesterday.

The reception was hosted by the Australian High Commissioner, Lorraine Barker, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the SMEC's operations in Bangladesh.

The high commissioner, on behalf of the SMEC Foundation, handed over two cricket bats signed by Australia one-day captain Ricky Ponting to two promising Bangladeshi cricketers, Ziaur Rahman and Mohammed Nazim Uddin. The bats were also accompanied by a personal letter from Ponting, who is a supporter of the foundation.

Speaking at the function, the High Commissioner pledged to continue her country's support for the fledgling Test-playing nation. The two boards signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the game's management and development in Bangladesh in 2000.

Meanwhile, Bob Scott, the chairman of SMEC, hoped the presentation of the bats and the proposal for a masterplan would consolidate links between the SMEC and the cricket development here.

"Australians and Bangladeshis share a common passion for the game of cricket," he said. "I am very pleased that we are able to work in a small way with the Australian High commission, the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the Australian Cricket Board to assist the development of the game here."

The chairman of SMEC, which has been playing an important role in Bangladesh through projects in transport, flood protection, urban planning and environmental protection, also assured that they are looking at ways to further help the Board.

Sate Minister for Youth and Sports Fazlur Rahman, Board bigwigs, a few national and former cricketers also attended the reception.
