View Full Version : Ricky Ponting will be Leading Test-Run scorer before he bows out

March 17, 2006, 06:17 PM
ricky ponting will most probably be the leading runscorer before he bows out.

i can tell. he has age on his side, he is only 31. and has vast experience having played over 100 tests.
this is his table:
Tests Runs-8253 HS-257 Avg-57.71 that is phenomenal. and he could do a graham gooch or a steve waugh and carry on playing till he gets 40! i believe he will even eclipse waughs test record of 168 matches.

he's got a good 50 tests left in him. with they way he is scoring for the past 5mnths, with 58 minimum he gets, why not?

he will. he shows no signs of slowing down. When he was younger, he was a steadier batsman, with a calmer approach and less better then than now. before he had a 44 avg.

Now the older he gets, the better he's getting. Unlike Lara and Saschin, who were the bombs yester decade, now in their age are very very very very very satiated and useless. lara being dismissed of his last 2 innings with (if i am correct) scores of 1 or something.

ponting has what it takes. Infact, he could even flop. A few years ago, Michael Vaughan was playing superbly-like a strokemaker. He was top of the batting rankings and with an average of like 59.

AND AFTER THE GLORY YEAR. He has rockbottommed to an all new low-of around 42.

And he isn't getting much on his run list is he?

so it also could happen to ponting.

But i doubt it.

Ponting is a mean machine.

I actaully before backed Gilchrist to become top gun, but now the WOW FACTOR of him has run out.

I even backed 10lkar to get the top, but its way too late for him now.

So i think, it will be Ponting to win.

Another two guys I had my eye on.

-BUT- lacks the sheer quality to be top run scorer. hasn't got every shot in the book. Too old.

-Rahul Dravid
-Could be, with age on his side. He has around 8,500 RUNS and 58.16!
-But he is too defensive, unlike Ponting who can take it to the next level.

Thats was also the downside of Vaughan-way too moderate.

So who do you guys think will overtake Lara to become top-test run scorer?

ponting definitely got a chance of doing that...
esp the way he is playin these days...

but its yet to see where lara leaves him to??
u never know bout him...i bet he will bow out in style, like he always has, majesticly, like a prince...

even if lara leaves around 12000 runs for the next fella to chase...say ponting...4000 runs isnt that easy to make....

guess we'll just hv to wait n see what happens...

true, but ponting is scoring around 80 runs an innings nowadays.

and like i said, he is only 31. he has atleast a good 5-6 years left in him.

it took vaughan 3 years to make aroun 5000. ponting is better than vaughan, so it'll take him in a ride.

i dont like ponting but i h8 2 say he will probably do it.

Lara is those types, that does this-

first innings-

two matches later-

next innings

next match

thats how he plays.

ponting gets halfcentury by a flow

Ponting is run machine - agreed.
Ponting can play 50 more tests - agreed.
Ponting is avg 57 and he can avg 58 agreed.

So, 50 tests can give ponting 75 innings. 75 * 58 = 4350. Totaling to 12500.

The main obsticle would be the Australian selectors bringing in the axe before the players are finished. Certainly S. Waugh could continue a year or more.

Now comparing with Sachin, he is 32 years old. India can't afford to get him out from the test lineup. couple of years more 30-40 matches with an ave of 55, 55 *55 (innings) = 3000 + 10400 gets him closer to 13000 faster.

Both for Ponting and Tendu to maintain their avg would be hard. So non of them may not get to that milestone. Lara's age is against him. After the WC we probably won't see him playing test any more.

So I would say Ricky Ponting has a chance to score the highest test runs before he retires but can't say he will. An any kind of injury or losing ashes again at home will end any kind of hopes.

10lkar has had his time. i think. he doesnt score the big 50 or 100 no more. &, is he that young, i could swear he was 34?
lara is 37 or something, he too old, and i doubt he'll still be top run scorer after the big 3 go (ponting, lara, 10lkar); meaning that its gone 4 him bcos he don't score much eany innings.

10lkar will overtake him- thats 4 sure.

lara, 123 tsts- age 37
53 avg
11211 runs

tendlkar-131 tsts-age 32
56 avg
10434 runs

now, if tendulkar gets a cupple of 50's, and a few 100's lets just kiss lara's top record away (provided if lara continues with his current poor form).

ponting, is going thru an excellent patch, and he will get high on the list.

How often aussie batsmen get to bat in 2 innings of a test. but ponting is a great talented batsman. and he can do a lot of things like tendulkar was before he had tennis elbow. so if he ponting doesn't get injured in few years he will break few test match records

thank u my friend,

Tendulkar will pass Lara and recover to finish top scorer.
However many Ponting has he will never be in the same league as Lara or SRT who CONSISTENTLY averaged over 50 throughout their careers and didnt boost their average when pitches became flatter and quality bowlers became less frequent.

March 25, 2006, 06:21 PM
true, but i doubt his recent outings against the likes of nel, ntini, murali, malinga, mahruf, pollock, and the english bowlers (flintoff, hoggard, simon jones, harmison) can be called as 'less frequent/non quality bowlers' can they?

or wud u say he'd struggle against the likes of mashrafe mortuza? lol.

credit where it is due but as i said u cant change what has gone before and also his average of 12 in India is laughable.

March 27, 2006, 12:54 PM
every1 has a gremlin or taboo against india.

their wickets almost meticulously suit them and their players perfrom so majestically there.

warner averages below 30 in every other country whilst bowling, but averages around 35-40 in india.

england recently never won a test match in india for 20yrs.

and pak , i think didnt beat india in tests 4 a long time (if i am correct)

also, an avg of 12, if u saw tendulkar play and he got out 4 12, u'd say DAMN! but u'd get over it, bcos u know it was just an unlucky innings.

so 12 isnt that bad.

and when was the last time ponting played v india.

quite long ago i think, he wasnt as good then.

he averaged 44, still excellent (overall in tests).

now he is better, and u cannot deny he will perform if he goes there now.

Ponting's last four years - 48 Tests - 5312 runs @ 73 with 21 centuries.

Did SRT ever bat that consistently ? I don't think so.

Did SRT ever score centuries in both innings of a Test match ? I don't think so - in fact the lists below will show he didn't and Ponting has done it 3 times.

Lara has done it once.

tendulkar, is a better batsman in terms of all round shots.
