So guys what about Basher as he persists with Rafique??

Mr-Cricket
April 12, 2006, 06:03 AM
You can clearly see our tails are up - they've all got a spring in their step. Enamuls stepping it up a notch. Really need to tighten the noose here. Comon boys, another half an hour.

hehe...worst case - we lose the match by 7 wickets early tomorrow (before lunch, i.e.)...best - we win it (i don't care about the margin)...average - akhon ja hoitese: it can go either way.

looks like they sent in the nightwatchman. let's get him too!

AsifTheManRahman
April 12, 2006, 06:11 AM
not being able to get clarke out today will be a huge crime; it shouldn't take twelve overs for two of the best sla's in the world to send a non-batsman to the pavillion.

Mr-Cricket
April 12, 2006, 06:12 AM
We're really bowling well here. Hopefully Enamul and Rafique can keep this up for another 10 overs, and that our fielders can back them up.

formula to get ponting out: loop one and drop it on the rough patches; ball takes sharp turn after pitching, and punters blocks; attempt the same on the next delivery. on the third, throw it in fast and straight. :)

in fact that should get a lot of batsmen, not just ponting.

gilly slogs - trying to break the shackles. that might just be what we want - him to do something silly. he's on strike against rafique now, btw. let's see what happens.

the aussies still seem to be in the driving seat though; we should look to pick up at least two more wickets tonight just to be on the safe side. it might get difficult for us tomorrow otherwise.

AsifTheManRahman
April 12, 2006, 06:36 AM
stumps already? oh well...

tomorrow's gonna be interesting, with the pitch cracking open a bit more.

the aussies are clearly winning this - they have one of the best batsmen and THE BEST wicket-keeper/batsman in the world on the crease...chasing 90 odd shouldn't be a problem....unless we bowl really, REALLY well. the margin of error is extremely small - every run counts, and we just HAVE to keep things tight. 6 wickets is still possible, and i wouldn't underestimate our bowlers' abilities; after all, we haven't really had much of a chance to see how they fare on a fifth-day pitch. however, as i mentioned before, the aussies are in a very comfortable position, and only a miracle can win us the match from here.

Australians are on top and still have 70% chance of winning the match, but they could have troubles if Ponting and Gilchrist are dismissed before they score 50+ runs... remember Australia are playing with 5 bowlers!

Good luck Bangladesh! Early wickets needed tomorrow!

AsifTheManRahman
April 12, 2006, 07:02 AM
from cricbuzz:

Match evenly poised at the moment, though only 95 more is required, it will be tough as the pitch is assisting uneven bounce and some late turn, lot depends on this partnership of Ponting and Gilchrist as they are playing one batsman short in this game

we are still in the game, no matter how faint our chances are.

yaseer
April 12, 2006, 07:05 AM
if we can get ponting and gilchrist out.....even 25-35 runs left to win.............Bangladesh will win the match.......out of 95 runs....80 runs need to scored by those two.....aussie tail can survive in this pitch with a batsman in the other side.....but cant score here....so i am very very hopeful......just two wickets........we need just two deliveries to be produced by our bowlers........

GO BD GO!!!!

AsifTheManRahman
April 12, 2006, 07:09 AM
tomorrow is a new day, and a fresh start for ponting and gilchrist. they will have to play themselves in again. so we are still very much into the match - remember we had them down to 93/6 in the first inning? that was in the second day, and this is the fifth; besides, we are dealing with the tail plus two here, as opposed to the first six in the line-up.

anything can happen. can't wait till sunset and two hours.

C'mon guys. I'm happy for BD cricket. One week ago all we could think about was a respectable win and giving the Aussies a hard time. Its nice to have been misled by our brilliant first innings, and its great to have the Aussies work into the 5th day to win. Through time and practice BD will be great; just not quite yet. Bashar's captaincy will have to improve and mybe then we'll know how to win. I'd be overjoyed if Aus reaches their target after loss of another 3-4 wickets on 5th day. Having said that, we HAVE to be critical about our slip up in the latter part of Aus 1st innings and the terrible collapse in BD 2nd innings.

The game is still on! Both side need to work hard to win the match. Today wicket was dead flat (apart from last half an hour). Fifth day wicket should offer more assistance to spinners. We have a very good chance to win this match.

We just need two early wicket.

I think rajib should be given the ball from one end...
I remember he was very good in the mornings last series vs. SL...
As he may give some 4's away.. its better to try him earlier than later...

we had them 93/6 in the first innings........5 of them were specialist batsmen.........now we have to get 6 wickets within 95 runs....where 2 specialist batsmen......its easier task than the 1st inninngs...also in the 5th day....with lots of pressure of chasing.

Ya i know what warne n lee can do......but in this low pitch against our spinners....they can only survive....and runs should come from the other end.....so...important in to get ponting n gili out....i am not scared of aussie tail in this particular pitch if their is no specialist batsmen on the other-end.

that would not be a bad idea.....but i would like to go with rafiq n enamul

No doubt....Gilchrist gonna attack tomorrow morning.....quick 40-50 runs from him can take the match away from us.....so, if 2 spinners are on the attack, we have better chance to get attacking gilchrist out. Gili gonna attack from the beginning....no doubt....at that time i back rafiq to get him out....key is to get gili out very quickly tomorrow.....and he is surely gonna give us chance because playing attacking shots in this low pitch is very hard....

Hasib
April 12, 2006, 07:41 AM
we can Inshallah win this... just get Pontng and Gilly out within the 1st 40 runs with the spinners and if they need a rest after that blast the tail away with the pacers and then inshallah we can do this

You are probably right... but I remember what Lee did in Edgbaston, having Kasprowicz in the last partnership (though on a much better pitch!), the Aussies are good fighters and never give up!

Anyway, also on a defeat there will be a lot to be satisfied for Bangladesh fans: who could have hoped to have this score on day4 stumps?:)

Insha'Allah we can pull sth out of a hat and mop up the remaining Aussie wickets before they reach the target. This will ultimately be good for world test cricket if we can have a close finish. And it will give our boys a heck lot more confidence.

My salam to the bowlers who gave their heartout. Whatever comes after that, Alhamdulillah. Nothing else I expect from them. Only 4 bowlers, that is lot of work. Our batsman failed us eventhough our batting is stronger than bowling. We just could not prove it. Anyway, hope we play the same way without the mistakes in second test.

Aus will (probably) win tomorrow...but I think, in a way, Bang are winners too...to take the match to the final day, and still have a small chance of an upset. Not many teams have done that against aus recently. In fact, this has been one of the best test matches of the season so far. Who would have thought that last week?

Just a message from BBC msg board. May be we will loose but indeed we earn lot of respect.

we had them 93/6 in the first innings........5 of them were specialist batsmen.........now we have to get 6 wickets within 95 runs....where 2 specialist batsmen......its easier task than the 1st inninngs...also in the 5th day....with lots of pressure of chasing.

Well said!!

Last few lines from Rabeed Imam's article in Tigercricket:
"If you are a believer in signs, then bear in mind also that no Bangladeshi selection has ever lost at Fatullah. The under-19s beat Australia in the Plate final here in 2004, Bangladesh routed Kenya in two ODIs here only last month and now they have an unbelievable prospect staring right in their faces."

I am optimistic, and as mentioned before, we have already earned a moral victory in this match....

Correction: same way althrough except 2nd innings batting. We need a "2nd innings batting 101" crash course immediately, before the start of the 2nd test.

Before every big match against the big teams, we say, there is nothing for us to loose, but everything to learn. Why can't we learn how to bat in the 2nd innings. why? why? why? why? why? why?

bdcricfan
April 12, 2006, 02:47 PM
I don't understand why our players were so less motivated on day 4. Chasing 300+ in 4th innings is not an easy task regardless of the opponent. I think they were upset or felt bad about the 2nd innings batting. Whereas, Aussies were 95/6 in first innings and they recovered the follow on and came back to the match.

We need to learn how to fight back even when there is a small chance.
In the field also, lot of times I have seen that we are not aggressive, always tried to save runs. Whenver a batsman charges, the filed setting gets spread out. On the final day, every single run counts. However,
every single wicket matters even more. I hope Bashar gets more aggressive to try to attack rather than defendm, as there is nothing to defend anymore.

Also, keep on mind that Aussies are on pressure, not us. We really had nothing to loose.

Let's wait to see how we do on day 5...

bdcricfan - i had the same thoughts on mind. infact, if you notice the way rajin got out - it appeared like he was so pissed on the fellow batsmen that he gave it away on purpose (i hope that's not the case). but regardless of the typical 2nd innings batting order collapse of our much vaunted batsmen, the 300+ lead was still strong. and a strong bowling/fielding combination could be very rewarding (the reward we are waiting for obviously). but somehow they are so down that it is clearly reflecting on their performances. needless to say, bashar should be the one cheering the team up but he sadly looked no different. it appears only ole' rafique has the 'fighting spirit' of a tiger.

CricFanBD
April 12, 2006, 06:27 PM
Still there is a little hope (if BD gets 2 early wicket in the morning).......Aussie controls the match.......But they should be on the backfoot.....if BD did 200 runs in the 2nd innings.........actually we never did well in the 2nd innings......Dav should work on this matter more.....and in my opinion I think as early as possible BD needs a bowling coah like Wasim Akram.......and two things are very pathetic.......Pilot left the ball and Sumon did humpty-dumpty in running betwn the wicket.......sumon should remember that....they play against mighty Australia......they turn every half chance into a real chance........anyway....i feel proud for my team...but still I am very very upset.....

I think that the Tigers have done a phenomenal job, and ironically that’s what makes this hard to swallow. So close, but not quite there.
Tigers played exceptionally well in the first innings, no doubt…both batting and bowling. But to reap the benefits, we had to have at least an average batting performance in the 2nd innings, to get us to the finish line first.
I know we keep saying that we are learning and we are improving, damn right we are. At the same time we need a win here and there to reassure ourselves and of course prove it to the world that we are on the rise. This win would have been the “gold plated official seal of approval”. When get so close then to throw it away, it deprives us from the much sought after reassurance which motivates us to keep charging ahead.
I think , we could have spent a little more time on the crease yesterday, and picked few more runs along the way. We had plenty of wickets in hand and a healthy lead to do just that. This would have not only givens us the extra boost, but also put extra pressure on the Aussies.
I am very proud of the way the Tigers fought, and thankful for the riveting thriller. But why stop there if we can go all the way.
We can still snatch it…..Go the Tigers

He is not a worry. He averages around 10 runs per innings and his average duration is 94 balls per innings. He's not the type of player that can turn this game on its head, so to speak. The longer he's out there, the more chance we have of getting him. We should be more worried about getting Lee here.

what a game! what a performance by our players. I got no more complaints nothing more to ask of them. The boys have really done an amazing job. What they did in the first two days was nothing short of amazing and i didn't really expect them to repeat that performance in the 2nd innings. But wht they've been doing in the last 20/30 overs is even better than the first innings. The fightback ability they've shown against the aussies even after being forced on the back foot is simply unbelievable. I bet teams like west indies and srilanka would be happy just to take a game against the aussies into 5 th day since most of their defeats in recent times have been big innings defeats. And look what our team has done here. They've practically created so many chances for us and made the game so exciting that they've kept us in the hunt even in the 5th day. Well done Tigers

its not a time for experiment.. with aftab or ash..
we need wickets... with little runs in hand..
new ball may fly off the edges... and bring quick runs...
