Ponting has been the best batsman in the world for some time now. He keeps winning so many games for his team even in totally hopeless situations. Once again hez been the difference between the two teams. something to ponder!! the difference between Aus and BD has been only one great performer!!

Quite a few - most half hearted shouts more than anything. But I rekon' Rafique had Lee, almost plumb in front - if Warne's one can be given, then that should have been too. Aleem Dar the umpire on both occasions.

Don't despair... we put up a good fight. The Aussies just finally woke up and smelt the coffee. I think teh 2nd test will be another competitve match, and you just never know...

I have never felt prouder to be a Bangladeshi. Even though I was not born there, my veins flow with passionate Bangaldeshi blood. I am more happy that people are giving us credit for something other than floods and famine - we are a growing nation and people are standing up and taking notice. The BD cricket team, for me, are the biggest ambassadors for Bangladesh throughout the commonwealth, and are finally impressing us all!

Just put Rafique in attack and Inshaallah, he will manage their tails.

you still dreaming :) . We didn't play well in our second innings , another 100 runs in the second innings would have been handy but we failed another chance came of Ponting got dropped now only 17 to win . Aussies can get these runs easily , even when their eyes are closed :) May be one more wicket but still they will win as Mortoza missed that catch and it's unforgiveable caz this kind of chance won't be coming again in a while for sure .

Full credit to Shahadat for giving it his all until the end - he really deserved to get Pontings wicket. Gave him a touch up in his last over too. Great knock by Punta - Sachin's 100's record is not too far away now. God I love watching him bat - that pull shot!. Bad luck Bangladesh, you did us proud. Pity about that second innings though.

IanW
April 13, 2006, 02:13 AM
Great players put in great performances in great games.

Sharihar Nafees and Mohammed Rafique both did this, as did Gilchrist and Ponting.

Enamul bowled some unplayable deliveries. Saleh played a good second dig, and Bashar a good first one.

Masrafee and Shahadat both bowled well throughout the test, and bowled as well or better than the Australian quicks.

The difference was that the Australian players players have been here before, and had done it before.

In the end, Bangladesh didn't quite have the runs on the board, or the luck in the final innings, so Australia won be three wickets.

But no-one is taking Bangladesh lightly ever again.

Well done Bangladesh, and especially Rafique! I had hoped this would be at most a 4 wicket win... they done 1 better. I am very happy with this result. This will most definitely get the critics (you know who they are...) to finally shut up.

Bring on the second test!

And of course... good job Ponting. You've just saved yourself from much embarassment (with some help from lady luck).

I am sad that BD lost but I have to be honest I never expcted we would play this well; if only we had performed better in the second innings ............ Anyway thanx to our cricketers - they have made us proud. I would hope we learn sth from this match esp about our 2nd innings batting. Also we better not get too carried away cos there's still the 2nd test. I remember at least two occasions - in the 2004 series against the West Indies and in the recent series against Srilanka - when we lost the 2nd test badly after fine performances in the 1st. Keep up the great work BD!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course very disappointed like the rest of you guys, but very proud of the BD performance. I hope the players will learn from this and put up a much good performance in the second test. It will be interesting to see if BD can keep up the same level of intensity in the second game.

Tiger-man,

Do us all a favour and grow a backbone.

In case you hadn't noticed, the two players that won the game for Australia were the best wicket-keeper batsman ever and the best Australian batsman since Bradman.

To beat Bangladesh, Australia had to play at their absolute best.

Good test match indeed!! Aussies bounced back when it was really required. They played like champions in the last two days and snatched the win from Bangladesh. Bangladesh showed their raw immaturity in the 2nd innings which costed the match. They also failed to grasp the last chance provided by Ponting at the end.

I am still proud of our boys. They pushed the world champions to the wire.

A memorable test match for both Bangladesh and Australia.

Understanding your frustration, this is the worst ever post I have found in Banglacricket after such a wonderful performance by our boys. We should be proud of them. They did something which othet top teams dream to do against the aussies. Aussies snatched the match due to some immaturity from our side (which is there) and its two great player of all time test cricket who had to perform their best to take it away from us.

Why do we almost always fall short? What do we do wrong every time? Why do we rarely go through?

Because we are still learning and we are quite new in test cricket and we don't have the experience and maturity to handle such advantage. This is one step ahead, the next step is winning test matches which will come sooner than expected by most people.

I beleive the performance graph of Bangladesh Cricket is the steepest one in world cricket.

i hope this baler team never wins or comes closer to a win ever again....
they are hopeless....every single one of them......shud bo back to bloody kindy nd learn how to spell "C R I C K E T"...

few days ago we were the talk of the town.....now the whole world is wondering "how the hell did the loose that match"......

its only our sorry-a$$ Country that cant keep a winning match on plate.....we had to loose it from such a commanding position,....

i pray to God that no other team or country have to rely on such morons to win a game.....nd i hope no other countries have the same heartbreaks as we have.....
COME ON!! Man!! ...Did you ever imagined that this will be the result of the test before it started? ... It's much more than expectation, and Ricky, I guess, in his lifetime won't say again about our status ... He is in the best form now, and he found how hard it was to play all the four bowlers of BD side.
In fact, I am a little bit happy that Bangladesh is showing improvement step by step ..against Srilanka last time they allowed ponly 19 runs lead ... If you recall two years ago, our team was even unable to bowl out a whole team even for one innings

Undoubtedly this is the best ever test played by Bangladesh. We all are a bit dejected to lose the test as we had win within our reach. Now its extremely important to keep the head high and put up an equal or even better performance in the second test.

It is a bit disaapointing that our key batsmen are not performing when they are required most. Ashraful and Aftab need to do something to reapy the faith of 140 million people and obviously the selectors.

Really don't know what will be the team in the second test!! I would like to see Nafis Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim back in the side. A bit harsh decision for JO as opening stands were quite good but I do feel Nafees could have done better. I am desperate to see replacement for Pilot or at least he should not be the vice captain any more. Give it to someone like Rafiq or Ashraful (hoping responsibility might improve his play).

Go show by the boys. Could have won but the second innings nightmare put an end to that dream. Didn't think we'd get Australia to wire in test anytime soon.
The second test will be harder as we may have woken up the Aussies, they are playing for pride. If you think BD fans are dissapointed, think about the Aussie fans. :)

Some rough bowling from Shahadat in the end. Hopefuly he'll bring that aggression to the second test.

Rafique and Nafees did a great job - congrats to them.

Ponting really had to play a very special innings to pull this one off....and in the first innings it was again Gilchrist....I am just trying to console myself with all these things....Cant really take this defeat...Feels so bad.....I feel like crying...But Im 21 yaers old...I cant cry either.....However this one is not as heartbreaking as the defeat in Multan where one Inzamam took it all away or the 1st ODI against The Windies in West Indies....Nothing feels right....I hate life...

ps .. like others have said.

It took amazing effort from Gilchrist (prolly the best wicket-keeper/batsmen ever as someone said) and Ponying (with 30 test centuries before they went to BD) to help Australia win this match. They also owe it to our batsmen BIGTIME.

I really liked the aggression of Shahadat Hossain, he bowled like a tiger at the end. He should be ver bright prospect for Bangladesh and has got some raw pace as well whcih will definitely increase after one or two years. He should not be dropped in the second test. Russel has to fight hard to get his place. And Shahadat can do the reverse swing which can be devastating against other oppositions.

Bangladesh is learning how to play tests and its a shame they don't any more test after this series for the next 12 month. This might cost badly to our cricketers. Board should really come up with some solution get at least one test serioes in next 12 months.

Sorry, but I can't agree ... JO does not sacrifice wicket ...and in last two innings the openning partnership managed around 50 ...they should be allowed as they are ... I don't think any change is required ... But Bangladesh should start bringing up another good wicket keeper, I guess ... One impressive thing is Rajin played more than 100 balls in both innings ..we need one or two more players like this ...then we can go for a draw ... To my opinion, our team should learn how to draw a match at first ...just look at the Paki team's performance ... they saved couple of matches last year. ...that's really matured test.

Captain's knock. Ponting played so responsibly. 2nd innings batting by BD was a gift for the aussies for coming to play here! Ausie played attacking cricket and really took away the advantage BD had. BD tried best to save the match that was already tilted in aussie favor. Planning, effort and execution did not follow through for BD.

JO's days are numbered in the bangladeshi team, Nafees Iqbal is not consistent enough yet to replace JO... and there in lies the dilemma! JO will always be a 20 runs player, but nafees iqbal has more potential so i will like to see him in the second test.

But he has not done enough to keep his place in the side, I beleive. The opening stands are mostly due to contribution from Nafees.

We have good number of stroke players downward ...Habibul, Ashraful, Aftab, and even sometimes Rafiq & Mashrafi ... So openning pair should be combination of one scorer and one anchor ...If 1st wicket falls early, then Rajin can go one down ... If opening pair knocks well then Habibul (to be honest, he is sometimes irresponsible in crucial situation) for one down. I agree with about Pilot ... but what to do ...Mushfiqur is too inexperienced to play such long version match ...

I think JO has changed his batting style recently ..he is more agressive recently ...and that's because of pressure on him ...But he was much better as an anchor ... Just play 100 balls ... even 10 runs from 100 balls is okay ...when opponent bowlers bowl you hundred times without success, you become a pain in the a** for them ...then you start getting loose ball ... Recall his hundred against pakistan ...that was a real innings ... I think he should not be condemned that much ...

Ashraful and Aftab are quite different player compared to JO. Ash and Aftab can be match winner at any day, has got lot of abilities which failed to be translated in first test but every possibility is there in the second test. JO is a player of limited ability, Nafis Iqbal has got better shots compared to him.

Well I am not syaing drop JO immediately but its really tough for JO to keep his place with such peformances.

I am an Indian cricket fan. But, in general, I appreciate good cricket, no matter which country. CONGRATULATIONS to Bangladesh for a great TEST. Wished I had watched it live, but followed on websites.
If u have VIDEO or highlights, post the URL.

I am very SAD to note that some of u are bashing ur team in the aftermath of a defeat. This is a proud moment for ur country that they have shown that they earned the name of a highly competitive Test team. This should be kept in mind, victory would have been sweet, sure.

But, dont bash ur team in this Forum. That shows lack of appreciation for the fight by Ban players. Ofcourse all teams (incl. India suffering poor form of Sehwag/Kaif) needs improvements. Keep playing this way, and it will be good for future.

JO didnt gift away his wicket? Why was he slashing at a good length ball outside off stump from Gillespie then? Those are deliveries test batsmen have to leave, and it was a classic test match dismissal - the way he got out. Much like how Brett Lee departed off Mashrafee today. Except that JO was attempting to play the ball with his 4 inches of bat's width instead of a good 2 and a half feet of straight-bat willow! This new look JO is most disappointing! I preferred his old style 100 ball 10 run innings much more. We kept him around for all our tests because of that! He doesnt have to prove anything to us, except that he wont gift his wicket away! Same goes for everyone else!

Let's not talk about what would/could have been, rather what it is right now. We are still making silly mistakes especially in 2nd innings, we can do much better than that. Our top 5 batsman as good as any International player (except few). I am very happy and proud, our lower order needs to be fixed (aftab & mashud). As for Basher, we need to check if his mother is still sick.

Sure!! However, if batsmen don't put up the numbers on the board that becomes the reason for losing. Last checked cricket is still a batsman's game. More true if you think of Bradman, Hanif and co.

Very much right... But if you look at the improvement graph of our batting and bowling side, I will definitely say that the bowling side has improved much more ... They can bowl out a team now-a-days, which was really deifficult before whatmore joined the team. .. But the batting side is still irresponsible ... Except JO(though he seems out of form recently) and RS(his last three innings), none of the Batsmen has the temperment of sticking to the crease for hours ... Just look at the batting of Ponting and Hayden ... Stick tight to the ground ...Loose balls are sure to come!! ... I am really worried about shahriar's performance in the second test ...

One dismissal is not everything ...How often does he do that is the question ... Our younsters like Nafees, Ashraful, Aftab do it more often ...and of course Habibul ...our players should learn how to stick to the ground for hours even without run ... If you are set on ground, you will surely get loose ball.. Make the bowlers impatient by your patience ...that's Test Batting ...just look at Hayden and Ponting's innings ...

1st test shows three key things:

1. How irresponsible and sloppy is Bashar and how helpless is BD team in terms of capatinship on the ground.
2. Ashraful and Aftab are liabilities for BD test team..they are okay for the ODI team.
3. We need Rasel more than Enamul for breakthroughs in the important times.
