Javed Omar is lasting longer than Ashraful in this series. Given that he is an opener its not an easy task but if we compare him to Nafees he looks pedestrian at best.

I am not sure whether we should have Nafis Iqbal or his brother as the opener. Tamim Iqbal is a dashing player and he is a left handed batsmen and if he can negate the warne effect like Shariar Nafees then he would be a very good find for Bangladesh. Tamim has been on scintillating form of late in domestic cricket.

Ashraful should be dropped at least for a test so that team management can make him understand that a place in the Bangladeshi middle order should not be taken for granted. We should not drop 2 middle players in the same match. Dropping Ashraful will send a wake up call to Aftab but his dismissal yesterday means that he deserves another test. For Ashraful the 2nd innings should be the last chance. By the way what if he fires in the ODIs then he will be back in the automatic selection again and that's what we need to take a note of. Just because Ashraful is doing well in the ODIs it is not necessarily translating into good scores in Test matches. In Rajin, we have the case in point. His compact defense and willingness to stay in the crease is what saved us from the sheer embarrassment yesterday.

MANJARUL ISLAM (RANA) is a very good option..

You want Manzarul Rana as a test opener? How can he do that? Probably Nafees Iqbal is the only other feasable option we have now. Rajin can also open and we can have Tushar Imran or Alok Kapali in the team.

I'd like to see Nafis Iqbal replace JO in the ODIs... since we do not have any more tests in a year there's no point arguing on that yet..

Besides I think Javed's days are numbered, he's served the team well but not doing enough any longer. We'll probably see his departure soon after the world cup so let's hope he performs well to retire with respect. Last thing we need is our own Ganguly in the making..

I don't know much about this Tamim Iqbal guy.. how good is he apart from being 'dashing'?

And who will protect Nafis on hard fast wickets. After all , he is psychologically scarred.

Nafees Iqbal for tests and Rajin for ODI.

Nafees Iqbal can also serve as reserve opener for the ODI squad. So, hopefully this will be the last ever international match in Javed's career.

JO is already replaced by Rajin in ODI (after Rajin's century against Kenya) and now in tests JO will be replaced by either Mehrab Jr. or Nafees (as we don't have any test in next 12 months and Mehrab Jr. have the opportunity)

Mehrab Jr. played a good number of innings as an opener in U-19 level. He played two matches in NCL as an opener.

Rajin played 9 ODI as an opener with an average of 43.75 while his career average is 25.18 from 34 matches. That means he avaerages only 19.24 when played in the middle order.

If rajin plays better as a opener then he should replace JO

Omer can be replaced by Rajin and Alok in place of the blank slot and if they are thinking of dropping Ashraful then probably Tushar imran or Rana is a good option..!

Rajin's average as an opener is 38.88 not 43.75.

However 3 of his 4 best opener innings were played against Zim and Kenya (inc. his century).

Most of his other innings were played early in his career at position 3, 4 and 6 against teams like Pak, NZ, Ind, WI, SL and Eng.

Unless Nafees Iqbal is given a chance, Rajin to is best choice replace JO in the ODIs. The series against Aus which will give a better indication how well he's suited for the opener position against a strong team, though I believe he'll do better at #3, this way Nafees Iqbal can be given another opportunity.

Hatebreed u are wrong mate!! Rajin's average is indeed 43.75 as an opener. You can check it using statsguru, probably u missed one innigs in which he was not out. here is the link for you ..

I also could not agree with you as most of the match he played in 3, 4 or 6 position. Look he played total 34 matches and 9 of them as opener (more than 25%, taking into account he has played in 4 positions - opener, no.3, 4 & 6)

9 innings = 40 + 6 + 77 + 2 + 7 + 5 + 23 + 82 + 108 = 350 runs

Average = 350 / 9 = 38.888888888888886

I will not repeat myself again.

Dear, to calculate the average you have to divide 350 by 8 not by 9 as he was not out in one occasion (108*). So, 350/8 = 43.75

That's the rule to calculate average of any player (you subtract the no. of innings he was not out from total no. of innings he played).

I think this will clarify you.

Neither Gibbs or Sehwag were specialist opener, yet they have done very well as test opener.

My bad, didn't notice he was 'not out'. But scoring big against Kenya or Zimbos doesn't make him a solution to Javed's replacement. Wasn't Rajin played because JO was injured? Only 3 of Rajin's innings were played at #6, while 8 at #3 and 14 at #4. All of his midder-order innings were pre-2005 when Bangladesh was in terrible form. 2 of his innings were played in limited over matches and 2 more where BD was all-out under 100 runs. His ave as an upper middle-order is reasonable against top teams compared to most of our other batsmen, except only Bashar.

Although Javed scored 254 runs in his 9 innings prior to the Kenya series (in which he scored 93 in 3 innings).

He has always played pacers well. His defence may not be as solid as Rahuld Dravid's, but neither Gibbs or Sehwag has perfect defensive technique. He is capable of playing with straight bat, and can pick up every scoring opportunity. When he gets settled, then he will also be able to handle spinners more comfortably. His aggressive batting will also take off pressure from Shahriar Nafees, so he can play the anchor role (like Justin Langer).

Selectors also must assure Aftab that it's an experimental thing, and his place in the test team wouldn't be under serious threat if it doesn't work out.

If everything goes perfectly, then we may find our version of Hayden/Langer opening partnership with Aftab/SN. If Aftab doesn't do very well and better options become available, then he may go back to middle order (like Gibbs, since the emergence of Smith/AB De Villers duo)

I strongly disagree Aftab should be used as an opener. He's doing fine in his current position and he's a match winner for us. I think he does well under pressure because it gives him a sense of purpose, he can open his hands and play his natural aggressive game. We have other options for opener.. Your last para it seems like your own version of experimentation.. we sire, not with him, no!

Aftab is perfectly fine as an opener. Simply because I cannot think of anyone who is perfect. Bashar averages around 35. Shahriyar above 30 for the time being . Aftab's attitude actually lends himself to the opening slot. People should realise that there are few openers now-a-days in the Gavaskar mould. Perhaps only Langer. I cannot think of any else.

I guess when spitty mentioned hayden/langer partership, he considered aftab as hayden of bangladesh not langer.... anyways not a bad idea at all... i mean I am sick of seeing javed opening and anyone else would be a better option... aftab has good technique and if he can score runs effortlessly against fast bowling... I would prefer him playing at number 3 but since its not possible for now, opening is not a bad option either... however, I don't think our selectors or coach will be that daring and that would go with the safe choice of nafis-shahriar

Tigers_eye

Whatever the case may be, I would disregard the facts that Rajin faced Minnows in the openning slot and he is not tested. If he is doing it against Australia with Lee, Gillespie, Clark I don't care if Shoaib comes to the party he is ready to face to Asif, Rana, Razzak. NZ, SA pace attack is no better. So he is an option but I would prefer NI and let Rajin come down the order.

Some talked about Tamim but not rokon? Tamim has proven nothing. A total flop in the U-19 WC. Let him play few more years and know his game first. Talent should not be the only criteria to be included in the national team.

Dear thebest bhai, you cannot simply justify poor defence by only no. of times bowled. Let's take no. of times bowled and LBW together because both is the result of poor defence. I am comparing him with two greatest batsman with soild defence.

1. Rahul Dravid - 29% dismissal either bowled or LBW
2. Sachin Tendulkar - 32% dismissal either bowled or LBW
3. Herschell Gibbs - 34% dismissal either bowled or LBW

I really find no difference statistically. yap I agree Gibbs does have sound defence like Dravid but his defence is world class.

He has been successful in ODI in #3 and #6, and since Rajin/SN is doing well there's no need to experiment with him in ODIs. Nafees Iqbal is the obvious 1st choice for the other test opening slot at this moment. But since Aftab still doesn't have a fixed place in the test side, he is a good candidiate for experiments.

Aftab as Langer? Are you kidding me?
No, actually I said SN could play the role of Langer for us. Langer is a "grafter" compared to Hayden, but he actually scores quite fast.

We can whine like a bunch of old women day & night, it wouldn't make a goddamn difference in the end coz we know our selectors will go ahead with whatever they think is right. Our problem is we feel too much and think little. So it's wise that we give importance about the team as a whole, that includes all under-performing/inconsistent players (hint hint!), and worry less about looks. Sure, JO's batting may cause you projectile vomiting that now even Aftab seems like the stylish option with 'solid defense'... it's too much of a risk for a team like ours.

First let these players gain some maturity, none of which are as experienced as Javed (yeah face it!).. Wait another year; until WC is over, Javed will be a gonner with plenty of options to fill his position. Not just yet!

What??? Wait till World Cup? That is my sole reason for bashing JO ... replace him before WC and let his replacement have some quality time with the team by the time WC starts.

And if you talk about experience, we can always go for Bulbul since he is returning to BD. Seriously, I will dance for joy if AIB replaces JO in our current national team.

Or on a lighter note, we can get Raqibul to replace JO coz he surely beats JO hands down in terms of experience.

I already opted for Nafis Iqbal to replace JO in ODIs.. but it would be a folly to completely axe JO and put another young, inexperienced player to replace him ahead of the champions trophy and then world cup.. I wanna see JO finish his career completely, and successfully, not have him as some back-up plan in case our oh so young and talented players fail. In the end, whoever is best suited under the circumstances should be selected wisely. I don't see Bulbul coming back though.

It surprises me to see the number of anti Javed Omar posts here. it seems if is the most unpopular player of the entire Bangladesh team ever. I don't understand this.

Here is a player with limitations. But he knows that and plays his heart out to overcome that. As long as he is at the center, he tries to stay as long as possible. I don't think anyone here can honestly say that he lacks commitment. Yet we hate him and want him out!!

Alternatively, there are others who are utterly irresponsible, have huge attitude problem and we don't have a problem with that!

Well, to be honest, JO is consistent in his own way. He plays across the line and his legs are always in front of the stumps when he does that, making him plumb LBW when he misses the line.

The wild slash is pretty consistent too.

I have seen JO play well in two kinds of situation -
1. When rest of the team has collapsed ... so JO is defending all the time
Or,
2. When his place in the team is really, and I mean really, under threat.

I detect that sarcasm in your post, but I think it is a tad misplaced.

Most of the time JO is out by playing a wild cut shot or trapped LBW from a off cutter. He knows that. But he cant help playing those. Bowlers know that any combination of those two tricks will work. People believe his defense is so pact. How come he gets out in off cutters so often if his defense is so hard to breach? Talking about his straight bat? Look closely when he plays straight bat and notice how much gap is there. Bowlers alway like to fill that up. Anyway, u guys please keep insisting that he is our best sheet anchor. You know what whenever I write sheet anchor for him, I always misspelled the part 'sheet'. Guess what? Sorry guys.

you must be really frustrated to want bashar out of the team :)

What's wrong with Nafis Iqbal? I mean he's still very young, has the ability to occupy the crease for extended periods, and contrary to what someone said in another thread, he does have the technique to be an opening batsman (although one of his dismissals against Sri Lanka last month was trully horrendous and surely must still give him nightmares).
