Being the hosts of a mighty event like the World Cup is a dream prospect for any nation and for Bangladesh that fantasy would become real in 2011 when it holds six matches of cricket’s greatest event as joint hosts with India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. There is also the possibility of being a part of the inaugural fanfare.
Bangladesh Cricket Control Board (BCCB) president Mohammad Ali Asghar, just back from the International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in Dubai where the Asian bid overpowered the Australia-New Zealand proposal to host the 2011 event, said that Bangladesh would seek the opening match of the World Cup at an appropriate time.
“It is still too early to discuss on that aspect and nothing has been decided yet. However, we will have a series of meetings on the World Cup 2011 leading up to the event. The World Cup secretariat will be established in Pakistan and we’ll have regular discussions there. From our side, we will definitely push for a World Cup opener,” said Asghar during a press conference on the ICC meeting and the World Cup 2011 at a local restaurant on Thursday.
