1916 BST: Argentina supporters heavily outnumber their Ivory Coast counterparts, with Hamburg's Arena stadium awash with the the light blue and white banners of the two-time World Cup winners.

But the Argentina fans will have to wait to see Lionel Messi as the Barcelona teenager has been left on the bench by Jose Pekerman.

Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze is about to play his first competitive game since September 2005 as he is named in Argentina's starting line-up.

Heinze plays alongside Roberto Ayala in the centre of the Argentina defence, where they will be up against Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba.

Arsenal defensive duo Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue will have the task of marking Drogba's Chelsea striking partner Hernan Crespo, who with Javier Saviola, leads the Argentina attack.

Argentina: Abbondanzieri, Burdisso, Ayala, Heinze, Sorin, Maxi, Mascherano, Cambiasso, Riquelme, Saviola, Crespo.
Subs: Aimar, Coloccini, Cruz, Cufre, Franco, Gonzalez, Messi, Milito, Palacio, Scaloni, Tevez, Ustari.

4 mins: Argentina are clearly trying to play a pressing game to try and unsettle the Ivory Coast. Chris Waddle, Five Live Sport

3 mins: Ivory Coast's first attack ends with Didier Drogba getting in a header that goes well over the bar.

2 mins: Argentina are quickly on the attack and Juan Riquelme tries his luck with a long-range free-kick.

1 min: The Group of Death's opening game between Argentina and Ivory Coast kicks off - the question is which two sides - Holland and Serbia and Montenegro are the other teams in the section - will leave to tell the tale.

22 mins: There is not let-up in this game as Juan Riquelme leads an Argentina breakaway that ends with Hernan Crespo's cross being cleared by the Ivory Coast defence.

20 mins: A great couple of minutes for the Ivory Coast which sees great combination play between Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba and then a strong run from Didier Zokora.

Zokora wins a corner, from which Abdul Kader Keita almost gets a header on target.

18 mins: Abdul Kader Keita relieves some of the pressure on the Ivory Coast defence with a strong run only to overhit his cross.

Argentina 2- Ivory Coast 1

87 mins: This is a stirring fightback from the Ivory Coast - they are throwing players forward as they look for that equaliser. Argentina goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri does well to gather a difficult cross.

85 mins: Maxi Rodriguez gets the ball in the net after Jean-Jacques Tizie spills the ball but the Argentine's goal is disallowed for offside.

80 mins: GOAL Argentina 2-1
Didier Drogba gives the Ivory Coast hope they can salvage a point from this game.

Argentina got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start with a victory over Ivory Coast in a gripping opening to Group C in Hamburg.

Roberto Ayala saw a header come back off the post before Hernan Crespo put Argentina ahead from close range.

Javier Saviola then latched on to Juan Riquelme's exquisite throughball to flick in the second before the break.

Didier Drogba turned in a low shot to set up a frantic finale but Ivory Coast were let down by some poor finishing

June 10, 2006, 07:20 PM
The Argentine defense held strong and probably the main reason Argentina got away with 3 points. Could have been 1 OR 0. It was probably the best match so far and Drogba lived up to his name.

June 10, 2006, 08:21 PM
argentina hadthe 2nd goal from offside but then that header from corner should have been called a goal as it crossed the line. so it evens out. but why argentina didnt try tevez is a question, saviola looked ok but he was wrestled out of the ball too often. also both the strikers were replaced by midfielders in the 2nd half and argentina had none forward, thats when ivory costa came back with the goal. if u play defensive, your opponent will score sooner or later. also where is messi??

June 10, 2006, 08:44 PM
Crespo was offside but he wasn't apart of the play since Saviola was onside and was the one who scored the goal. It was a very entertaining match it could of easily ended 5-4. Drogba played very well as did Riquelme. Ivory Coast IMO can get to the second round. It depends if 4 points would be enough? Don't know if they could get 6 in this group

June 10, 2006, 10:27 PM
6 will be tough with Netherlands playing close to home and being in great form. Plus, do we know if Ivory Coast plays consistently allthe time or are they like their predecesors - Fireworks in one match and 0-3 in the next?
