I pray and hope JO and Kapali fail to appear into the playing XI.

No real surprise. Bashar's participation is under serious doubt as he probably requires surgery.

In absence of Bashar it will be really interesting to see the new captain.

I'm not happy to see JO or Kapali's inclusion. Manjurul deserved a place in the squad and yet dissapointed. When will these selectors learn!

We need to choose the best squad of 14 regardless of "bondhu prity and shajon prity". I hope selectors will show their professionalism through fair selection for the best interest of our team and country as well. Good luck Bangladesh in the forthcomming Champions Trophy.

Why JO again? His days are numbered in ODI and he should have long been out of the main squad. Ignoring Manjurul Rana is also not justified at all. Kapali and Javed Omar are the weakest links of this squad.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Left-handed batsman Mehrab Hossain (Jr.) was the only newcomer in an 18-man preliminary Bangladesh squad announced today (Sunday) for September’s ICC Champions Trophy in India.
The 19-year-old Mehrab has been a consistent run-getter at domestic, under-19 and A team levels and has also been a prolific scorer for the National Cricket Academy team which is currently touring Pakistan. He started off as an opener but has tasted success in other positions in the top order. Mehrab is not a natural stroke-maker but provides a calming influence in the middle by accumulating runs. His left-arm orthodox spin has proved useful in limited overs cricket.
Apart from including Mehrab the selectors have decided to keep the whole group that had toured Zimbabwe and Kenya recently. The squad will report for duty on August 29 to Tigers’ fitness training coach Paul Chapman at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur.
The BCCB has also named the players to represent Bangladesh in the Asian Super Sixes Challenge 2006 in the Pakistani city of Karachi. The hard hitting sixes side has Mohammad Rafique, Mashrafee Bin Mortaza, Aftab Ahmed, Manzural Islam Rana, Sakib Al Hasan, Forhad Reza and the dashing A team opener Nazmus Sadat who has been in excellent form for the A side and the Academy side in recent months.
The tournament will be held from September 13-18.
Preliminary Squad ICC Champions Trophy:
Habibul Bashar (Captain), Shahriar Nafees Ahmed, Javed Omar, Aftab Ahmed, Mohammad Ashraful, Sakib Al Hasan, Forhad Reza, Khaled Mashud, Mohammad Rafique, Mashrafee Bin Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Syed Rasel, Rajin Saleh, Mushfiqur Rahim, Kazi Shahadat Hossain Rajib, Alok Kapali, Tushar Imran, Mehrab Hossain (Jr.).

The national selectors have chosen an 18-member preliminary squad for the competition which is expected to be officially announced on Sunday. The list might contain one or two fresh faces that have attracted the attention of the selectors by performing at various levels in recent times.
There will be some high intensity fitness training under physical training coach Paul Chapman and assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin during the first 10 days of the camp beginning with a fitness test for all on day one. The Tigers’ coaching staff have incorporated fielding drills with their fitness regime and Salahuddin, who is also the team’s fielding specialist, will be conducting separate ‘fielding fitness’ sessions for the boys with Chapman.
The pace bowlers will undergo a power endurance session in the first week while there will be strength training for the full squad. For certain players there will be high intensity aerobic.
Coach Dav Whatmore, who is out of the country, is expected back in Dhaka on Thursday. The squad will have their first net session on September 5.
Bangladesh play their first match of the Champions Trophy’s qualifying round against Sri Lanka on October 7 at Mohali. They then travel to Jaipur to face the West Indies on October 11 and Zimbabwe on October 13.

Rafiq and Razzak are left arm spinners.
Saqib and Mehrab also bowls left-arm spin.
So we will have 4 left arm spinners in the team.
Jamaluddin Babu could have been considered as an different type of spinning option: Right Hand off Spin

Rubu, unfortunately you are right.
I just want to ask the selectors

since their return from African safari what TI, JO and Kapali have done to get their place back?
what Rana has done wrong that he would get his place back? too many SLA - dont give me that answer. There is already four (Rafiq, raj, Mehrab, Saqib)
why the offie Jamal babu not included. He could provide the variety. Also againest lefties of WI and SL he would have been handy. His performance in NCL is also good.

1) cardinal sin...unforgiveable like suicide or homosexuality
2) good move, well done
3) what the hell does rana have to do to impress the selectors...yes, he isn't good enough to be on the squad, but neither is JO or Alok, but rana has been shafted time and time again.
4) ummm...we don't really need another spinner, but it would be nice to see a non-SLA once in a while

Mehrab Jr. to early inclusion...are they trying to make another Ash,Aftab??
Should not be a better idea to send him in training or playing first division international matches and then try to experiment in openning slot. Doing good against A teams and associates does no impact in performing against test teams.

What we will do with four SLA bowlers, nowadays ODI international batsmen play aggresive but responsible cricket where they study deliveries way before hand. Bowling with four same SLA will make that tast more easier. May be our SLA bowlers can stop them for four overs but rest 35 overs, they would know how to judge the bowler. I wish selectors have brains!!

mehrab jnr may be opening with shahriar nafees. JO will probably be out of luck this time. good on the selectors.

"We believe that he is a very good player for the longer-version game but that doesn't mean he is not good enough for the shorter-version," Faruque continued. "We have lot of hard-hitting batsmen in the squad but we felt that we need a player like Mehrab who has the ability to play the anchor role in the top-order."
Faruque said that getting the right pair in the opening slot would solve many of the side's problems. Though Javed Omar, the out-of-form opener, has been included in the squad, it is likely that that the selectors are looking to replace him with fresher faces. Faruque simply said that they are looking for a proper opening combination before the World Cup.

Mehrab is a level headed guy and is lot more matured than the present Ash and Aftab. May be less talented but he has lot more discipline and good temperament. So no use comparing him with Ash and Aftab. BTW doing well against associate and 'A' teams is the only criteria for selection into the national team and whether he will have an impact can be known if he gets selected to play for the playing XI. He has been doing well for the 'A' team for about a year now, so it's the right time to move into the next level for him. We really need to get rid of Javed from our ODI team and he is the only one capable of doing that presently (may be nazmus too).

personally, i'm pretty comfortable about mehrab being in the eleven (if he is picked at all) - and this is coming from a guy who is always reluctant to introduce youngsters too early. the reason is that from what i've heard/read about mehrab, he seems to be capable of providing the team with much needed flexibility - he can bat anywhere in the top/middle order, and change his game according to the demands of situation. he also seems to be a level headed guy, and i believe that if we are trying these youngsters out before the world cup, they should be tried against relatively weaker teams, and the WI and Zimbabwe fall in that group.

mehrab has done well in various levels in the last two years, and he has proved himself thoroughly unlike ashraful/aftab/many others, all of whom were selected based on merely a century or two in either domestic cricket or a game against a crappy academy/first class side.

finally, who else can the selectors pick for the number one spot? the alternatives are JO and Ash!

Good move BCB. Just as I was wishing. We need to groom a new captain as well. SN's time has come. Surely within a year or two he will make it a permanent job. Just hope and pray that this added responsibility does not affect his performance, God willing.

Good move by selectors to include Mehrab Jr. So we got 4 potential openers now! Considering JO's current luck and form, there would be 3 only. SN is must. Rajin is in good shape in recent tour. M jr may have to wait a bit for the slot.

Dont think selectors have the gut to instill SN as the captain in Bashar's absence. And dont think it would be wise now. Besides, elements like Pilot would be too tough to handle for SN.

Good move BCB. Just as I was wishing. We need to groom a new captain as well.

Which one is the good move as you wished? Selection of Gullu, or selection of Alok? Or is it still keeping Pilot as a viable Captain? Or including mehrab to help Rahim to warm the bench for the regulars? My guess is groom a new captain cannot qualify as the "good move BCB" yet as its still not validated by any newspaper and you comments looks like after thought comments. Please enlight us what you meant by "Good move BCB".

Considering JO's current luck and form

I understand what you meant by his current form, but not sure what you meant by JO's current luck? Did you meant that JO current form has anything to do with his bad luck? As far as I know, JO was in bad form for a while, and only his good luck was hiding the real issue (i.e. his form) for a while.

As for me, I think, there is nothing new or surprising, thats what I exected out of BCB. As ususal, they tried to take some bold steps, but shied away to take the final step. I suspect they will do the same thing with mehrab that they did with Rahim. Which doesn't make sense in the first place. If you don't have the guts to play them in any of the games, then why bother selecting them?

So can we trust on the following:

- Monday's doctor’s report is the final report on this issue.
- Mahbub knows what he is saying and we can trust on what he is saying
- there will be no Tuesday's doctor’s report or Wednesday's doctor’s report contradicting Monday's doctor's report?
- There will be no rehab mishaps in Basha's part like falling in the dance floor while auditioning a dance clip with sweety the tweety.

what i don't understand is why someone would trust the words of an apollo doc who doesn't know what he's talking about over that of a bunch of aussie surgeons. if bashar requires surgery, he might as well go ahead and do it - even if it means that we don't qualify for the ICCCT. we have bigger fish to catch next year, and i'm sure risking him isn't a good idea.
