As far as i believe Srilanka won the 1996 world cup under Dav whatmore. Now here is a common scenerio between that team and our

1) SN=Jayasuria (a left hand opener)
2)Aftab=Kalu (a right hand opener)
3)sakib=gurusinha (a left hand no. 3)
4)Ash = Arvinda (the best batsman of the team. i don't think ash is but reading all this forum about him, lets give it to him)
5)bashar= ranatunga (team captain)
6)reza or ___= tilakaratne (a guy who was in and out of the team)
7)pilot = mahanama (a test type batsman who can stay at the wicket all day)
8) rafique = there a right arm spinner i forgot his name, he was out because of chucking after wc
9)mashrafe= vass (team's leading fast bowler)
10)Shadat= pushpo or ___ (teams 2nd fast bowler)
11) Razzaq= Murali (a rising spinner)

Now SN is great form like jaya was right before WC. And aftab is more like the kalu who could never stay in the wicket longer.

May be we won't win the WC but could it be possible do some upsets.

Or what if we win the WC is that going to be a miracle? in that case, it is just mere coincidence of cricket

Without dreams we will not win the WC ever, but please leave the comparison with Sri Lnakan players alone; as a matter of fact any players who has established their reputation as an elite player. No need to disrespect them.
For our players sake leave them alone from comparing everytime they play good. Be patient and let them grow first.

Well, i agree with most of you guys there is no comparison with srilanka's player with us, especially with murali.

Lets get there now,
Before the 1996 WC murali didn't even play 50 matches and his ODI average was 30 compare to his average 23 now.
Vass only has 70 wickets with an average of 27 which is being consistent
Now comes the shocker the hero of the WC jayasuria had an average of 23 until the end of 1996 with only 3 centuries and of those 3, 2 were after the WC.
Same goes for the Kalu who kept his average in twenties.
for mahanama and tilekaratne they new players with same experience of murali and vaas, so very runs have they scored to make big difference.
And before the 1996 WC who though srilanka will dominate the WC.

Now, big differences are
Arvinda
Gurusinha
Ranatunga

We don't have players like them, so there is no way we can win the WC, (better luck 2011).
But the question is can we make some upsets.
Remember if we win two games, we have high chance to qualify for the top eigth. And we have to play a new team bermuda whose quality is below Kenya and a really broken team india who may not recover before the WC.

I am looking for some upsets, unlike Kenya i don't expect them to be semi but why not be in the best eight.
