"welcome to the real world neo we are aboard the nebuchadnezzar..."

now that we have bashed the noobs, and spent some time dreaming about which teams to beat next year, it's time to wake up.

we scored a 270 in the subcontinent (in the home ground for that matter) against scotland with the last minute help of mash! if we struggle so much against scotland, how are we ever going to put up a competitive total against the test-playing nations?? similaly, it took a 30 overs to get to 150 in the first ODI. against test-playing nations it's ok but against scotland it should have been better. only aftab was playing how you are actually supposed to play against a opponent much weaker...

i think you guys will agree...or continue the self-deception :D

We won the match by 146 runs.... How bad do u think the scotland team is.... they performed better with pakistan than with us (but in their condition tho), but it still emphasizes the fact that we are not a bad team. U cannot score 300 if one of ur opener plays with a SR of less than 50 % all the time. So I guess the problem is still with the fact that we still don have a solid reliable opener who can also rotate strike. Yes we scored 270 with the last minute help from mash but in case u havent noticed he is a regular member of the bangladeshi team and not imported. Mike procter did mention that we have the ability to cause upset in the coming WC. In case u think u r more of an expert than go ahead. By the way pls don say BD sucks. We as supporters always supported this team and was behind it (even at times when it actually sucked in 1999) and such a remark is absolutely uncalled for at this time wehn they actually deserve some praise.

No, I wouldn't agree...both about most of your comments, and also to the idea that it's a form of self-deception to think BD did well. Here are the reasons why:

1. 270 against scotland may be a bad total, but the total was put by the whole team...not Mashrafee alone. Yes, he paced it up later on, and that's what should happen in any match. Our middle order failed, just the way it fails against big teams...that doesn't take away the credibility from the whole team work.

2. 30 overs for 150? When we were chasing a total like that? I'm surprised why didn't they take 40/45 overs. That would've been better. Again, we're not there to win only...we're there for some practice too!

3. With BD's current status and cricket history, it's acceptable for BD to be at this level...although some fans argue it should be better. It's good IMO, but only compared to the past 4/5 years. Before that, we've been a struggling team.

4. Wakeup call? Yea sure...you can call it that way. But I would term it as "wake up call to other nations"...coz if the team keeps improving well, England and NZ are next for us to hunt down.

I guess the point the thread opener is making is a valid one but the way he put his ideas in his post seems a bit too exaggerated. I would take 270 against Scotland anyday provided we did not lose so many wickets while trying to make it, at most 3 wickets would have done. Moreover I wanted to see one of the top orders score a century preferably Aftab because he is my favourite batsman in BD currently and he has been scoring an awful lot of dominating half centuries without converting them. Bowling wise I think Bangladesh is set to fight the bigger teams however batting wise there is a lot left to be desired. I have said the same thing in the match thread but since this thread is more relevant just repeating my points I guess.

i agree with shahriyar that BD is much stronger in bowling than in batting.

Come on people, give BD a break. The team is still gelling together. Young players like Saqib, Mehrab and Mushfiq are just getting used to their positions. They have talent but they need to play for atleast 4-5 years to be experienced. Australia wasn't formed in a year...it took time....they now have a team full of seasoned pros...u cannot compare BD to them now.

layperson
December 17, 2006, 10:28 PM
Ohh one more thing, so far from mehrab's batting he does not look right for ODI"s. We need to try out other players for this spot IMO. Mehrab looks like a good player but he has a big technical glitch from the very little I saw of him, He tries to cut or guide balls very close to his body square on the off side and is a big candidate for caught behinds. Moreover he is very slow in his batting. We need someone to open who can rotate the strike or hit boundaries and Mehrab is someone who can stay in the wicket for a long time and accumulate runs, not in either of those categories.

I dont understand what is the benchmark to be called as a good team. From the starter of the thread, it seems like he is seeing BD as at the same level as SA or SL or Aus. I think, its time for him to wake up and assess the reality. BD played very professionally and not for a single moment, in last two matches, BD looked nervous. It was a very prefessional game. It just showed the standard of cricket between BD and rest of the associate memebers. Surely, it would have been entertaining scoring 450 in 50 Overs or 150 in 15 overs ( I guess, this is what u wanted), but, for me, I like the fact that BD played professionally enough to mark the difference. So.. For me, this was perfect Game from BD.

Ejaj had a valid point...the professionalism which is one of the key factors of success of the big teams and Bd showed it. Not sure, preparation wise if this tour is helpful, but you know it's better than nothing!! Any progress on arranging A team matches with big teams?

I think, it wasnt that bad as it will surely rise the confidance to go for more. ALthouhg, I wont support playing more against them, Playing occasionally is not bad for the team. The winning attitude is very vital for the team and the confidance it gave, will push BD to play harder against more established teams.

another FAAAO thread. there have been so much discussion on this topic in past few days, that i found no reason for opening up such an USELESS thread with stupid heading.

we'll see... let us not forget we'd been so used to loosing match after match, and now that u're saying BD suck... lets not find bad in good.

read the article by US in prothom alo today, hope you may get some peace for your poor soul.

We r gonna suck at WC.
Not because we Cant, but because, we dont give 100%, and BCB can sometime careless on many issues.

100% means - intense training, determination to beat the top (go hill tracks and work out)
it means studing each player of the opponents, thier batting weakness
it means figuring out new variation in bowling for the upcoming WC
it means playing with top teams, which we didnt for while with the bless of idiotic BCB.

We r already thinking we r damn great....

People with the slightest knowledge about cricket will dare to think great about us. I guess, people with short vision are thinking what u said. There is still a gulf of difference between us and rest of the 8 teams.. but, nonetheless, this gap is decreasing everyday. I dont get why are frustated for? Its better playing Scots/Zimbos than playing nothing. There is still a gap in quality among our players and other leading testplayers. And, this gap wont go away by looking at the video or finding faults of the opponents. Cricket is a different game then rest of the sports. Officase, it would have been better if BCB could manage to play against more established opponents.. But. u also need to realize that, just like u r thinking playing scots are waste of time.. rest 8 teams also think similar while playing us. So.. what goes by. also comes back. Its rather important that we look more into the future and try to arrange some matches against emerging players in BD in a fast bouncy pitch ( perhaps,, the instead of 22 yards, batman should bat in 18 yards pitch.. on a cement wicket).

Well Mav my freind,
except the part of going to hill tracks and doing intense training...
how do you think BCB or our players are already not studying other teams and henceforth others "technological" strategies you are mentioning...
i think you are underestimating the resource our players are able to access these days...

Unless you can prove me that they dont have any access to modern day technologies, i believe i have right to believe they do.

And whats with people jumping to conclude these days that without any hilly intense training session, its not a training session at all??

The Aussies also have bbq, steaks and beer ( and i mean loads n loads of beer) for their meal, do you now also want our players to follow the same food menu as them?

The gap btw Aussies and us is not only an intense training session, but that is of day and night, atleast to this point of time...

And all these talks about we playing only Zims, kenya et all all round this year could actually be a blessing in disguise...

After all at the end of the day, the records speaks for themselves and this is the year we won 17 of our 27 ODI's.

This probably was the year where our players now realise their abilities and what it means to be the winning team, to be on the top, be confident and most importantly having the self belief that they can do it...

whether it stands to be true or not, we all can wait a little longer to find it out...

during these political unrests, atleast these wins boost our morale. As bangladeshi, every win is sweet for us, coz in every department we are forced to lose.

Hey two questions.
Could you say the same thing like 3 years ago? remember we lost to canada. so yes we have improved and there is a distance now between bd and ***. but yes there is also distance between bd and other 8. but the gap is reducing. we can fight now which was the dream three years ago. SO do the math.

Q 2: Can u tell me how many times the big 8 scored above 300 against BD?

Scots bowling is not that bad.

BD's 278/6 is the highest ever total against Scots and they have played Aussies, Pakistan, New Zealand, WI and Bangladesh.

Anyway, Bangladesh is improving, performance was poor in the pre-Bashar/Dav era and definitely not now.

Bangladesh played a weaker team, and they beat them.

This is what good teams are supposed to do.

I realise this tour is a World Cup warmup, but the only thing that I am unhappy about is the lack of a four-day first class game against Scotland in the schedule, not because it would be good for Bangladesh but because it would be good for Scotland to play more good teams in four-day cricket.

The reason they dont tour Zim, kenya or scotland is cause we are doing man..
take it easy...

If we are beating those teams so comprehensively, whitewashing them; it is very hard for me to see the benefit they gonna rip from playing even far more stronger team whose gonna whip their back pretty damn hard...

We are in an unique situation here and should make the most of it..
we are the bridge between the elite and the associate..and there should be this balance..

yes i would love to see us playing more against the bigger boys.. but havent we been given a good enough chance over the years to play with them??
i guess yes we have.
Apart from India, every single country toured us and we toured them, hec we even completed a whole home and away series against the invincible Aussies...

What more could you want within a 5 year period?
The whole world doesnot revolve around the need of Bangladesh Cricket, mind you.

Based on our past performance (2000-2005), i think we have played enough test and ODI among the big teams and this is the gap year where we needed to find our own feat and get into some sort of winning habit..and thats exactly what we did the whole year around beating the crap out of Zim, Kenya and Scotland.

So, for those who are whinging too much about playing against Zims and et all, just remember Team 1-8 in test arena has been doing the same thing with us over the past 5 years...

So, just take it easy....
