View Full Version : Really worried about our next captain...

Given Bashar's almost shambolic performance as a captain, fieldsman and batsman (well, pretty much every aspect as a player!) we have all raised the question of who his successor will be. Bashar is on the verge of retirement, so even if he does pick up his batting and fielding (we can safely assume his captaincy will remain the same ;) there will come a time when we will have to bid him farewell (sooner rather than later if I had my way).

However, who will replace him? Shariar is playing quite poorly and it seems that he is slowly becoming a test specialist. We can't have another Bshar-type captain who can only play one form of teh game, and we certainly can't have two captains as Australia managed to do with Ponting and Steve Waugh (although that was more of an interim arrangement until Waugh retired). It seems that the selectors have their minds set on Shariar given that they recalled in place of an inform JO.

If Shariar doesn't fit the bill, who else might be considered? For me, I think Saqib Al Hasan has shown a lot of maturity as a batsman and bowler throughout the WC, and the selectors might want to consider grooming him in tandem with Shariar in case Shariar fails as a batsman. In fact, maybe the selectors could "demote" Shariar for the upcoming India series and give Saqib the job of vice-captain to (a) given Shariar the message he needs to pick up his game, and (b) see how Saqib handles the position.

Please discuss what direction the selectors should take, as the selection of our next captain is absolutely crucial to our success, and the most important selection decision BCB faces in the coming months or (hopefully not) years.

I would have Tushar as the captain for a series or two. If he performs well, he stays. If he doesn't, we will know the status of Shahriar Nafees by then. If he still struggles to make it to the team, we need to think of some other option. I wouldn't give captaincy to Sakib, Ash or Mashrafee who are still developing their game and it can effect their games and put additional burden.

Would Tushar then be an interim captain, whilst one of the youngsters is groomed? I don't think Tushar is a straightforward replacement for SN yet, but I agree that he might be tried in the Indian series as he has been performing well in List A games etc.

I nominate Bugs Bunny. He is so cute that no matter how much he fails, you will not raise one finger against him.

Jabbar bhai...eto chinta koiren na. You're choking mannn!!!

Plans for a new captain will come soon. From what I can see, BCB will act on their immature decision-making protocol.

Appointing a guy who's very inclusion in the team is in doubt as captain is simply bad strategy. Regulars will not play well under him. Next two years is crucial. I am almost certain that Sakib will make a very good captain but he's at least two years away.

Yeah! Give Sakib Captaincy and destroy him like we did to Bashar!

BRILLIANT PLAN!

Make Masharfe Captain. Simple.

In my opinion, there are only two players in the current Bangladesh team who can be groomed to become a captain at this point in time (in the context of not destroying them) and they are Mashrafee and Ashraful. Perhaps they should become the Vice Captain just to see how it goes?

Are we talking about Bashar here? Seems like it. :)
Replacing a deadwood with another suddenly don't seem that bad. :)

How can anyone think about Tushar and captaincy?? The guy has the worst temperament I've ever seen (well, not litteraly)!! Tushar shouldn't be seen anywhere near the national side for at least two more years (full stop).

BCB discusses major issues today
Sports Reporter

The Dav Whatmore issue will get the priority in today's executive committee meeting of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to be held at a local hotel.

The board will set its course of action whether they will renew the contract with coach Whatmore, who is nearing the end of his second two-year contract with Bangladesh, or going for a new one with a new vision.

The contract of the Sri Lankan-born Australian, who has irked the board high-ups by expressing his desire for the Indian job during the World Cup, will expire by the end of this month but the board is likely to retain the burly man at least for next month's home series against India.

The board will also discuss about captain and the vice-captain for the upcoming two-match Test and three-match one-day series against India. Habibul Bashar was named captain and Shahriar Nafees his deputy till the World Cup.

It was learnt that the high-ups are thinking about separate captains for the one-day and Test sides

They will also decide the fate of team physio Paul Close, who got an extension during the World Cup.

Goood Move.. they shud do this as early as they can...

Based on this report, I think BD will opt to have Bashar as the Test captain, and someone else as the ODI captain. Mushfiq has had some experience captaining his age group (a lot of the players are from his age group!). But I would prefer Sakib as the ODI captain, with him eventually being groomed to take over the Test captaincy from Bashar.

Great timing. I only wish BCB not disclose anything of what was discussed before the match of WI.

They also need to start make a backup plans if DW leaves after the Indian series cause we have another series against SL in June. May be get bulbul or a local coach as a temp coach for that series. That would give them some time before devising a long term coach.

o_mogoj,
Nice suggestion but who is he (Tushar) going to replace? Aftab? He is not an opener. That's where we have a huge problem.

Best 11 choose korey tarpor captain choose kora dorkar (Just like Australia). not the otherway around (India or Pakistan).

Shahriar Nafees should be given a chance.. After 7-8 bad matches..he still averages 36+ ..thats a good sign..that if he performs,he does it well.
He should be atleast given the chance for INDIA series.
