Defiant Mortaza rescues Bangladesh in Chittagong
21 May 2007
Bulletin by Khondaker Mirazur Rahman

A brilliant all-round performance by Mashrafe Mortaza saved the blushes of Bangladesh as they averted the follow-on on the fourth day of the first Test at Chittagong Divisional Stadium on Monday.

After taking 4 wickets with ball which is his premium duty, Mashrafe struck a brilliant 79 off 91 balls to lift Bangladesh from a tottering 122/7.

I just I wish we have 10 more Mashrafees. Kudos to such a great cricketer who dedicates everything to save our team. He has so much responsibilities on his shoulder, sometimes I wonder how he manages it.

BSS Murtaza remains our flagship... and continues to damage the enemy the second he's underestimated because of the overall size of our fleet. i dig the underlying pride in the report miraz bhai... it's all good... rajin shouldn't get out like that after taking so damned long to settle, and ash's little poke, what was that and why at that particular point in time? SN blew it after such a promising start, again wanting too much too soon... but there's always the ever defiant mash... may God continue to bless us with his presence and keep him out of injury. :)

Great match report. Didn't watch after lunch. Reading the report was almost as close to watching the match live. Yes, in this forum it should be all about BD.

if we bat in the last two sessions, how many overs will we get to bat?i am not sure if chasing ~300 is possible in two sessions.

Really a brilliant performance by our beloved PAGLA !!! I can see reminiscences of Kapil
Dev and Wasim Akram in Mashrafee --------- our future CAPTAIN !!!!
Bravo Mashrafee keep it up.

Mashrafee is the only consistant player in team. I wonder how many more ODI/test will we have to observe painfull performance of Habibul Bashar. He needs to dissapear. If not in easy way, selector needs to find a hard way. BTW, Tamim and MUshfiqur Rahim need to come back to test team. I am tired of putting my hope on these array of inconsistant batsmen playing reckless shots.

Not sure how you expect Tamim to help matters, but I agree, Mushfiq should definitely be in the team, if not as the wicket-keeper then as a specialist batsman.

Very nicely written ..

Again and again Mortaza shows our top(less) order batsmen how to bat. Unfortunately his colleagues do not see/learn from that - its just us - the fans see and appreciate!

Kallis, Thy name is Mortaza!!!

I really hope that Masrafe is more like Flintoff than Kallis.

Even the Board and the former cricketers don't agree. As a fan, I would really like to see Mashrafee be the captain, but instead, they had to choose Ashraful.

I am honestly starting to think that Mash is the best young all rounder in the game right now, what with both freddy and kallis both concentrating more on batting now.

So much pressure on these two pacers...and spinners doing nothing! I am not sure what we have on our luck tommorrow, but our batsmen have to prove that they can bat!!! All the media releases I read (locally or outside), clearly stated that most of our batsmen gave away their wickets!!! I hope last day Mash and Shahadat are not over used as we need them to be fit for the next test..batsmen should perform, otherwise they should see the consequences.

After todays show Mashrafee deserves a batting promotion. At least he should come before Mashud. Habibul and Dave must think about this.

Yep..you are right, no doubt. But Mortaza is in the praise because he has been saving us pretty much routinely.. Yesterday Rajib played a superb co-anchor role.

May Allah continue to help Mashrafee to play well in each and every match he plays and produce fear in his opponents whenever he plays, ameen. I also pray, May Allah bless and help Shahadat perform good as well, ameen. One thing Shahdat needs to give up, is fortune locket, that is not going to help him. He needs to turn to Allah direct. May Allah guide us all, ameen. This is a lesson to be learnt by our batsmen.

I think back pain is troubling Mashrafee. Today he looked very anxious and I could see it in his face. He should be given proper rest after this series.

Mashrafee should not be overused and should not be captain ( he does not need the extra pressure). He is a national treasure and he needs to be preserved.

Agree, it's the selectors gave so much pressure to these two young pacers...they are overusing Mashrafee, despite his pain he is bowlilng+batting. I wish we had one more pacer. We don't wana hamper his existing pain.

he is better than half of our top order batsmen, the amount of times he scores more than our top order batsmen is just unbelievable.

Yes Shame Shame and SHAME on our batsman for overusing Mash in this manner. Cant Mash do some kind of trick and make himself into 11 Mash?

It just goes to show that a little bit of bravery and baravado can take you a long way even in test cricket. He is a brave spirited cricketer. My obseravtion of the fourth day from what I have seen from highlights : Good news that SN seems to be finding his feet. He is one of the very few we have who has the ability to score a big one once he spends some time. Encouraging. HB- not gonna say anything any more. Ash played a one day shot. Sakib must learn to defend with a straight bat that is pitched on line in test cricket. He, however, won't make that mistake again. He does have a bit of a problem with the bouncy ones on or around off stmup. Rajin- did the good work and was a soft dismissal. KM was unlucky. Still, I don't expect big scores from him any more.

Well done Mash! You are a true champion! The world is watching....

As for captaincy, I think that it would be asking a lot of Mash at this stage, and teh pressure might break him (although given yesterday's performance, Mash looks indestructible). Also, given his fragile body he might not be a regular ficture in the team and therefore would be difficult to appoint as captain.

this is kinda bad, cos what if we start depending on mashrafe? like the indians used to depend on sachin, u know how if he played good india would play good as well, if mashrafe gets injured, then it would be bad
