View Full Version : Asoka de Silva and friends fail umpiring exam

Why am I not surprised ? :D

Sri Lanka’s international umpires bowled out
World Cup umpire Asoka de Silva among shocking failures at exam
By Namal Pathirage
In a shocking development of Sri Lanka’s quality of cricket umpiring, most of the country’s top umpires have failed to get through a written examination conducted for umpires to pick Sri Lanka’s representative at the International Cricket Council’s elite panel of international umpires, sources said.

Sri Lanka’s most prominent umpires Asoka de Silva and Gamini Silva, the two officials who are in the ICC’s international panel, and three other international level umpires Ranmore Martinesz, Gartien Liyanage and Jagath Nandakumara are among the most notable candidates who have failed the exam.

Interestingly 26 of the country’s 28 First Class umpires had sat the exam but only five candidates have been successful in a damning indictment of the country’s standard of umpiring.http://www.dailymirror.lk/2007/05/28/sports/10.asp

This is absolutely frightening. I think the same is true for other countries!!! The cricket board should allocate enough resources to develop proper umpires.

If that happens, I am ready to supply Mishti to everyone. :)

Umpires are not robots. They would make mistakes. But consistantly making mistakes should subject to be ejected from the Elite Panel or from the international panel.

Ashoka is most consistant umpire of making mistakes ;)

If for this failure SL board doesn't permit Asoka to do umpiring job, then It's a very pleasant news for our cricket. I always tag him as a hell for BD cricket

May 31, 2007, 08:52 AM
I think he just didn't fail the exam he also came late to the examination hall, went to the wrong room and fell while trying to seat. I think its not his brain only he needs an eye checkup and black patches on his both eyes!

I don't see why they are complaining over language of the test. If you are an umpire, your role is not restricted to strictly making decisions. You are required to be an authority, of which communication skills is an integral part. If you feel your lack of English proficiency is barring you from passing a written umpire's test, chances are you that very trait makes you an incompetent authority figure on the ground (specially for someone in the Elite panel).

Good riddance.

News of the day for me :)

June 1, 2007, 09:58 AM
The Moderators are acting weired here. Why was this moved? Please understand the value of this even versus retirement of Steve Buckner or Darryl Harper. They are not the same. For other umpires I wouldve had any issues but when it comes with Ashoka,, its very relevant and very much related to Bangladesh Cricket than International Cricket, its an emotional event of revenge and joy that finally the umpire who deprived us from many eventful moments has faced his own fate by nature... its definitely an occassion to salivate about, to feel joyous about.

Asoka is a really poor umpire. He should be anywhere near a cricket pitch. A lot of teams have suffered at his hands. Did anyone watch the Netherlands vs. Scotland WC game? Scots were desperately unlucky with a couple of his LBW (not given) decisions, though full credit to ten deschate (sp.?) for taking the Dutch home so comfortably.

Asoka D Silva = Asoka Dumb Silva no wonder he failed the exams.
