View Full Version : England vs West Indies 3rd Test

cleazer
June 7, 2007, 09:07 AM
England leads the series 1-0. The odds were extremely heavy in England's favor all week long, as it seems everyone expects yet another shambolic diplay from an undermanned West Indies side.

No Flintoff as usual for England. Sammy makes his test debut for West Indies. Fidel Edwards comes in for Powell, and Chanderpaul is back. Apparently Gayle is far from fully fit, and he'll only bat in this test. No bowling from him.

England
Strauss, Cook, Vaughan, Piertersen, Collingwood, Bell, Prior, Plunkett, Sidebottom, Harmison, Panesar

West Indies
CH Gayle, D Ganga, Devon Smith, S Chanderpaul, RS Morton, DJ Bravo, DJG Sammy, D Ramdin, CD Collymore, JE Taylor, FH Edwards

England 150-4 after 47 overs.

Collymore has looked very good thus far, taking 2-21 from his 13 overs. Alastair Cook has been the batting star for England so far, scoring 60, but Darren Sammy eventually got him for his first test wicket.

In fact, Sammy has been fantastic so far. 12 overs, 1 wicket and 21 runs, but a full 6 of those overs have been maidens!

The return of collymore and the introduction of sammy spinned away the wheel from english favor. lets see how quickly bell gets off and how sidebottom gets DENIED (not smashed -- our captain please note) by chanderpaul

296/7 still not a very bad day for England. Hope WI take three quick wkts this morning. But their biggest problem is with their batting. Lets see how they bat under the new captain.

Well England finally finished their innings on 370. The tail wagged with Bell. Bell fell short of his century.

In response, Gayle and Ganga couldn't stick around. It is Morton who is playing a 20/20 game I think. 97/2 not bad. The only thing glares at me is England already gave 29 extra. one third of the total almost. sloppy bowling and fielding must be.

cleazer
June 8, 2007, 10:43 AM
The follow on has been avoided!!!

West Indies are 197-4 after 39 overs. They're scoring at more than 5 per over! Chanderpaul is West Indies' high scorer, up to 43 so far, and is in there with Bravo right now.

Yeah that's quite funny but I think some other user already posted the :duck: for a duck.

btw I never saw him bowling so I ask: does Edwards deliver like Malinga?

Not quite the same, I have an almost identical bowling action to Edwards, it generates pace, but doesnt have such a high risk of going wide. Its a sling but not as extreme as malinga's, because malinga puts his arm very far back.

this bowling style is so exciting to both play and watch, but hard to master, get it wrong its gone miles wide. Get it perfect on a full length, the batsman is in big trouble.

Another shabby performance with the bat. Except Chanderpaul! And now 2 days left and getting 400+ is never on the board. The birlliance of Sammy with the ball is the only invention WI could achieve from here. It seems the West Indians are still in the bad patch of Lara regime. They need a good heads up and come out from defeatist attitude.

West Indies require another 154 runs with 5 wickets remaining

And a whole day, this is indeed turning out to be a great test.

Bearman
June 10, 2007, 12:22 PM
154 needed at stumps with 5 wickets in hand. Backbone and courage at last from the Windies middle order. The encouraging thing is that England were not actually bowling that badly for much of the day.

Shafin, their last 3 batsman are pretty hopeless, so two more wickets and its probably game over.

sandpiper

Day-4 stumps:

West Indies 301/5 chasing 455.

Brilliant resistance for the windies but can they do it? I'm sorry I don't think so... Chanderpaul and Ramdin are the last recognised batsmen: Test debutant Sammy has 25 first class average but only scored 1 in the first innings... Taylor could score some runs but his best is 23*... Edwards and Collymore averages are below 10... as Bearman wrote, two more wickets and it's over... so Chanderpaul and Ramdin should reach 400/420 before being (both) dismissed to have West Indies with some chance. I saw Ramdin batting against India in the last match of the Test series past july and he can bat, so he could be one to rely on... btw the highest successful run chase in Test cricket is 418 by West Indies themselves on Australia in 2003:
http://www.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2002-03/AUS_IN_WI/SCORECARDS/AUS_WI_T4_09-13MAY2003.html
can they do it again? (and better!)

Shafin
June 10, 2007, 03:15 PM
I just hope so.The record before that Aussie one was also held By WI.

It's only 155 runs, they have 90 overs, and England dont have any wizard like Warne,Murali,or a madman like Shoaib..
They should do it,now that they have come so close..

Sohel

One World
June 10, 2007, 04:25 PM
Well, what a day. West Indies have done so well to give themselves a real chance of winning tomorrow - Chanderpaul, their rock, will shoulder the burden again. He's unbeaten on 81, with Ramdin on 26. England need to take five more wickets, though, to wrap up the series and they have every chance of so doing.

Man thats the Shivnarine we like to see, c'mon one more day, bring the new sun over the horizon the genes of real cricketers

lets all out here hope that west indies pulls this win off. its surprising that in over 136 years of test cricket, no team has ever pulled off a 450+ run chase. even the highest succesful chase in odis(438) is more than the highest succesful chase in tests(418). if windies does it off, it will be one of the best things to happen in cricket and in future, teams, esp windies will be confident of chasing down 500+ scores in 4th innings in future.

GO WINDIES!!!

WI played superbly yesterday. But I dont see any real chance for them. IMO, the chance of WI winning this test is 10% at the most. If any of Shiv or Ramdin is out, the floodgate will open.

seriously, that is the reason why chanderpaul is never called a graet batsman, if it'd be lara, i don't think this would be the case

i have to agree. shiv rotated the strike over to taylor one too many times.

there's something wickedly HaBa-esque about vaughan that will never meet the eye.

Collymore was quite unlucky as Bell made an amazing catch... praise to West Indies for showing a great fight... if they keep on playing like this better results will come!

(let us not forget Sarwan was missing!)

they need lawson, powell, taylor and fidel to bowl together ... a genuine spinner, not another nagamootoo, who can also bat well won't hurt either.

Dave Mohammed is a spinner that can bat... (he averages 32 in Test cricket!) but he's never given too many chances.
Sammy has had a great debut so he's one to rely on for the future. Gayle, Sarwan, Chanderpaul and Ramdin are good batsmen... now they have many promising young pacers... it's time that 2/3 of them finally confirm their talent!

I wouldn't count my chickens just yet. They've shown this kind of fight in the past only to fold cheaply in the next matches.
