The kings beat the Ducks 4-1 in the season opener. The British crowd was really quiet. They got into the game towards the end though. It seemed as most of them came only to see a fight.

A total Wingnut here, have been for a series of strange reasons since watching the "Dead" Wings play the Caps at the CC in 1981 with my buddy Jimmy Fronc and his dad. Ice hockey's my favorite sport BTW, I like NHL more than cricket believe or not. Played quite a bit in and after college in California ... pick-up games mostly, and roller hockey too. Lost direct contact after moving back to Bangladesh for good in from 2002. Weird hour NHL games on the local ESPN and rarer piped-in games at the Canadian Club manage to do a little.

Red Wings ATW !!!

Most important game of the season for the Leafs tonight ? Perhaps... Paul Maurice's bag-skate drills barely went wrong in his Carolina days. Leafs need a statement-making performance tonight at the Swamp.

Those damned enigmas, otherwise known as the Toronto Maple Leafs, managed to find a way to lose against Jersey last night, which wouldn't do any good to the sentiment of the skittish Leafs nation. The way the game was played, Toronto needed to come out of it with atleast a point, if not two. Tough test tomorrow at Bell Centre... will be a dandy!

With all due respect to Mats Sundin, I always felt Peter Forsberg to be the better 2-way Swedish center.

Forsberg may have a slight edge in the defensive game, but Mats is THE better overall player. I doubt anyone even in Sweden would doubt that. And ofcourse, Mats is far more durable than Forsberg, which automatically solidifies Sundin's reputation as the icon of Swedish hockey and the face of the franchise of the TML.

TML should just play the best teams in the league. It seems we can only beat the good teams. The sens, habs and now the best team in the league Detroit. We still have a chance to make the playoffs.

Also Fletcher shouldnt even think about trading Sundin.

Going on now :
Ottawa 5 Habs 0.

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Nik Antropov's goal 1:02 into overtime helped the Toronto Maple Leafs stun the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2, at Air Canada Centre.

The leafs are disturbingly enigmatic. A team like theirs have no time to be complacent about other lesser dogs in the league, but an a$$-whopping at the hands of the likes of Panthers n Coyotes appears rather inevitable, whereas outplaying the likes of the Senators, Habs n Red Wings seem to be in the cards - always getting up for games against the higher-calibred teams of the league!

About Mats... ideally, Cliff The Puppet Fletcher should move him to Detroit/Pittsburgh/Philadelphia/Vancouver for a blue-chip prospect, an above-average roster player and a couple of early-round draft picks, and then re-sign him bak in the summer. But Mats isn't going anywhere by the looks of it. Afterall, you cant criticize loyalty.

Zednik should've been released from the hospital by now. How long till he comes back to playing ?

Also, the Trade Deadline is around the corner. Million-dollar questions : Will Sundin be moved ? Who'll Carolina go after, now that Brind'Amour is gone for the season ? Is Detroit happy enough with their high-flying team ? How many points will it take for the Leafs to win (pun intended) the 30th position overall ?

Pittsburgh has been in the hunt for Sundin, but realiable sources say that Anaheim is the forerunner by a distance. But then again, half the league would want to have Sundin's services. Bottom line : Cliff Fletcher will have be blown away by an offer, and only then he will ask Mats to waive the no-trade clause.

If its the Penguins indeed, I would like to see them give up Jordan Staal and a 1st rounder for Mats, no less.

Thats wishful thinking. Pens are not going to deal Staal and a 1st round pick for a 39 yr old due to be an unrestricted free agent. Too heavy a price to pay for a rent-a-player. Besides, what we need is a winger, not another center. However, Staal can be moved for Hossa. Thats the other rumor. Plus, we will get Sid back soon.

Not that there is a huge difference between 39 and 37, but Sundin is infact two years younger than what you claim him to be. I dont think there's any question around the league that the big Swede is STILL an elite player to play the game, especially down low. The Sundin-for-Staal swap is definitely a wishful rumour, but thats the type of deal Sundin should yield, if he's to waive his no-trade clause (which he's just not going to do). If a half-functioning Forsbergh can be dealt for what he was last season, a fully efficient Sundin should fetch atleast half of that, if not as much, considering all the conservative attitude of the teams in this post-CBA era.

Anyway, I am not expecting Sundin to be moved afterall. Other liabilities of the Leafs team will be, however.

Sorry for the age mishap and he indeed is an elite player. But, from Pens perspective, he is too heavy a price to pay, if it takes a Staal and a 1st rounder, for someone who will be a free agent in the summer. I will take him anyday but not at the expense of Staal. We don't have good face-off man either. He would solve that problem instantly. East is crazy this year. Isn't it? You think Leafs have a chance? I think everybody has a chance this year. All you need is a semi winning streak and you could be in the mix-any team.

Professional athletes dont know how to "tank" a season, once "postseason" isnt a viable option anymore... they dont worry about "what the point"... they do their job, something they love to do and has a passion for, and they get paid for it. Also, a lot of pressure gets taken off in situation like this... and players often perform better without pressure! BINGO! :)

Lidstrom out 3 weeks; Ericsson, Hartigan recalled

DETROIT – The Red Wings learned on Wedneday that they’ll be without their captain and five-time Norris Trophy winning defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom for at least three weeks as a result of the thunderous hit he took Monday in Denver.

With a black metal brace covering his right knee, Lidstrom met with reporters following the Red Wings’ practice Wednesday afternoon at Joe Louis Arena.

“I was hoping for something shorter, but right now they are saying three weeks,” Lidstrom said. “I just did the MRI this morning and we haven't seen the results yet, but hopefully that will come out good.”

The team also announced that they have placed goalie Dominik Hasek and defenseman Brian Rafalski on injured reserve, while calling up forward Mark Hartigan and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson from Grand Rapids ...

This was a bold move by Ray Shero. Hossa is a great addition to our already super line. Finally, we are getting healthy and soon will get back Sid, Fleury and Gary Roberts. Gil is a good physical presence. Exciting times in da Burgh. Mario wants a cup as an owner now!

Pens gave up too much for a rental player. Hossa is good but this move will get them in trouble. They have to sign too many young players. Malkin, Staal, Malone, Orpik, Letang and Fleury. Can't possibly sign Hossa. They gave away a good prospect in Angelo Esposito once ranked #1 by the NA scouts. Plus two roster players in Colby Armstrong who is a good role player could be valuable in the playoffs because of his leadership. He can put the puck in the net and plays hard in both ends of the rink; one of the very few in the penguins who actually backcheck. Christianson was a solid defensive 3rd liner with -3 plus and minus. Considering the fact that penguins play high risk high reward offense so that's a pretty good stat. Furthermore they gave away their 2008 first round draft pick which has greater pool of talent compared to last 3-4 years. Unless Penguins win the cup, it will turn out to be a horrible trade. Hossa with the Sens did absolutely nothing except for one series against the leafs. Back than Yashin was a star but only looked to collect pay check after that. I think Hal Gill is a better pick up because they only gave up (a late round) 5th or 6th round draft pick. Gill is big and strong and in the playoff his stay at home defensive style will be a great asset. Even with all these trades unless the goaltending is there, they won't go far. As of now they would play the habs who are tough on the road and starting to turn it around at home. Yes they upgraded but gave up way too much. Oh yeah they got Pascal Dupuis who stats are worst then Colby Armstrong who in 21 of 25 of his last games has a plus and minus of (+9) and that ranks third on the NHL. Can't believe they gave up Colby as well.

You are obviously on top of your game Ishstylish circketer! You do have a lot of legit points. We may have given up too much for a rental player, though he is very good, unless we win the cup or able to resign him for a longer contract. You have to remember that this Pens are not the bankrupt organization that they were a few years ago. New arena is coming. Games are always sold out and have a waiting period for season tkt's much like the Steelers across the river. Primary owner Ron Burkle is a billionaire and wants a winning franchise. Revenue sharing will also kick in. We do have a lot of young great players but most are under contract. In the future, we may have to give up somebody, but that goes with every team. We are not mortgaging the future. We had a ton of high picks in last six years and the cream of that crop will remain here : Sid, Malkin, Staal, Letang etc. Colby is a good team guy, but for a no.1 pick, he never panned out the way we would have liked. Christensen is a center in a team already blessed with Sid, Malkin and Staal! Where do you play him? Fourth line? If we traded Staal or a Ryan Malone, I would be upset, but we didn't, and as much as I liked Colby, he aint no Hossa. We still have a lot of character guys in the team i.e, Talbot, Ruttu, Roberts, Kennedy, Hall etc. Don't forget the best fighter/enforcer in the league also plays for Pens. About 1st round pick: Lets say, we don't need any at the moment or in the immediate future. Esposito may turn to be a good player though his stock fell in the draft. He is still a few years away from being NHL ready. Its a myth that Colby was the only one who backchecked. Almost every player back checks these days under Therrien. Goalie? Heard about Conklin? Check his stats. The way the East is cramped this year, we had to a make a big move to help us go over the top. Only time will tell if it works or not. I am only worried about this year right now. I heard Montreal had jersey made for Hossa! Too bad..

Conklin is kinda old. He's having a good year. He's moved around a lot. Played in Edmonton for awhile. He didn't perform well there so I am not convinced that he can deliver in the crunch though if Fleury's healthy he won't get to play much. Fleury's used to facing lot of shots. If played in the QMJHL, you see goals and saves not a lot of defence. He can do the job provided that the rebounds are taken care of. In playoffs if you don't get the goaltending offense won't matter. Hossa's record like most europpean players are pretty abysmal in playoffs but pens have lot of good canadian guys with character. Colby will be missed in playoffs for sure. Dupuis is a decent 3rd liner played under Jaques Demers and Hitchkoch so should be a good checking player. Gill's pick up great. Pens should have gotten someone like Chad Kilger. Hossa's addition is good but if they don't win and can't sign him and lose assets it's a horrible deal in the long run. Almost as bad as the Alexei Yashin deal: Sens got Spezza and Zideno Chara for him. I wonder who won the trade. Mike Milbury in his time made some stupid trades. As a habs fan I was disappointed that Hossa didn't come to Montreal but I like our team. I was hoping we could get Tanguay but flames wouldn't trade him. But it's good that we didn't lose any of our roster player other than Huet who was struggling in the last 4 games he played. Ryder's starting to find the net, the two K brothers are playing well. Plekanec is doing well as number one centreman, the load is off Koivu a little; things looking up. Habs are missing Ribero though. Should have really tried hard to sign him. This guy was touted as the Habs saviour and we didn't offer him a decent deal. Goaltending is a real issue though. Carey Price is young and still new but if Ken Dryen could do it so can he. Our defence is good and he have the best powerplay, if you can keep it close 5 on 5 we have a shot. Let's just say we are all hoping that the Price is right. Pardon the pun.

He's not Canadian that's why. Canadians are the only people in north america who care about hockey. Figure skating has a bigger fan following in US than hockey. Malkin's lighting it up this year because's he's playing in centre now that Sidney's injured. Would be interesting if what they do with Sidney. Would Therien play him in wing? It's hard to play wing in defensive zone. If you're the centre you just check the opponet centre who would usually look to pass and rely less on speed. Jordan Staal's under performing this year because he's moved to (left) wing from centre.

Well as of now Pens are 4th Habs 5th. There's a possibility though I would really want Habs to be in the top 3 and if possible #1 in east. We're 3 points away from top spot which is currently occupied by the Devils. Devils and Habs both have 18 games left. Pens lost yesterday and Hossa was out of the game. They are calling it sprained MCL. I hope he's ok because it would really suck the life out of lot of Pens fans like yourself. I saw the highlights, they need to adjust with Hossa and Dupuis. Gill was -1 but he's a good PK nontheless. Kovi's good, he's definitely underachieved as a player. To me he was and still is to a lesser extent because he lost his top speed one of most talented hockey player in the league. I remember when he played for the pens, with Jagr and Straka, PP was deadly. Kovi was fast back then but his shot is still hard and on target most times.

Russians were always good and now they are now learning to play the Canadian way. These guys score goals but they also hit nowadays, drop the gloves, can take care of themselves and show leadership. One thing that Ovechkin and Malkin do well that Kovalchuk doesn't do is play well without the puck. Kovalchuck is a far better shooter than both of them though Ovechkin is close to him. Lecavalier fell off a little in the points he's 6 points behind the leader Malkin but vincent's got 2 more games in hand. Even if the Pens's got through, Patric Roy was simply not beatable that year. So many overtime wins that year. People nowadays are copying the Canadian style of hockey. Dump, chase, pass and shoot. I remember when we lost against Switzerland in Olympics Pat Quinn was saying "Swistzerland played a better canadian game then Canada" which was funny but not really because we got eliminated. That building we played in was so unlucky for us. We didn't score a single goal in two games we played there. Just waiting for 2010. This time in our home ice, if it's NHL size rinks we would dominate.

Hossa got hurt. A week maybe. What else is new with us this year. Its amazing that we are even in the playoffs race.

I like all the Canadian teams. Its a shame that some Southern U.S states have a NHL franchise, where no one gives a hoot about hockey, yet no teams in Winnipeg or a replacement for Quebec Nordiques ! The way U.S dollar is leveling off with Canadian, maybe, NHL will go back to those Canadian cities. Pittsburgh is very much a hockey city though. I say it because I live here and seen it first hand. Prior to Lemiuex, Pittsburgh was only a football town, but now you can see youngsters playing it everywhere. People are even building ponds in the suburban areas for their kids.

Yeah Pittsburg is a good sports city but the baseball team is not very good. Steelers are good and Pens doing well now. Great to hear that there's interest south of border. Of the 6 Canadian team, 4 will likely make the playoffs, Edmonton and Toronto should have tanked the season or traded to get 1st overall draft pick to get Stamkos who in all likelihood will go number next year's draft pick. Leafs draft 6th and edmonton 27th. Stamkos is a great young gun. At 17 he made the Canadian under 19 team, and scored tons of points in the OHL for Sarnia Sting. He's quick, a good playmaker, and most of all good on the powerplay. If you saw the moves this guys showed on TSN as a preview for what to expect in the NHL all stars game you would have been amazed. This guy's got attributes any team would love to add. The downside of his game is that he's not very tall nor big. Kings will probably draft him. Ducks have the 3rd overall pick this year thanks to Oiler's signing Penner. Rich always get richer.

Leafs win 3-2 over the capitals. Ovechkin scored the first goal for the caps. His 49th of the season.

Sundin scored his 29th and assisted with the other two goals. So Leafs still have a chance to get in the playoffs. 5 points out.Its going to suck if they miss the playoffs by few points again.

Yeah, they may miss the playoffs yet again. Last year, Islanders ruined their hopes in the shoot out if I remember well. Sundin not getting traded was a bummer. If this guy really cared about the team and really was the martyr he would gotten rid of his no trade clause. Leafs could have gotten good draft picks for him at the trade deadline plus roaster player(s). I mean given how much Pens gave up for Hossa surely the market would have demanded something similar. At the very least two draft picks 1st and 2nd round and maybe even a conditional draft pick to go with that. This years draft pick is deep so it could have worked out well for the leafs had Sundin accepted to be traded anywhere. Lost a lot of respect for that guy. NHL is a business and no franchise owes anything to anyone. If Wayne Gretzki can get traded anyone can and should be tradeded if it helps a team. Had he gotten traded, he could have still come back to the leafs and signed with them in the off season but Sundin gave some...though I am not a leafs fan in fact I hate the leafs but Alex Fergusson screwed the franchise pretty badly and now it's upto the aging Cliff Fletcher to fix this mess. He partly did by traded Hal Gill and Chad Kilger but couldn't move McCabe, Kubina nor Raycroft.

I love grapes. He says it like it is. Not too many french canadians like him because he criticizes them too much and thinks french canadians are soft hockey players. He loves Vincent Lecavalier though who is ironically a french canadian (probably the best player in the game right now) but plays like a hard nose saskatchewan boy. The reason Sundin didn't want to go to another team at the trade deadline is because he said he wouldn't feel right if he goes to a team and wins the cup. He said the team's journey and push for cup starts from the training camp. If he goes as a rental player he would feel that he missed the journey and ups and down of that team. His hip is a real problem. There's speculation in the media that he may retire next year. He wanted to retire as a leaf so that's another reason why he didn't want to get traded.

Red Wings 4, Sabres 2

BUFFALO -- Mired in their worst slump in nearly 20 years, the Red Wings were determined to end the misery.

Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula each had a goal and assist, and Dominik Hasek made 22 saves against his former team in Detroit's 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.

It may have been only the second win the past 12 games (2-8-2) for the Red Wings, but it felt like a playoff victory for a struggling team that came in enduring its worst stretch since going 0-9-3 from Oct. 21-Nov. 16, 1989.

"We were waiting for a game like this," Hasek said. "We weren't playing bad, we just couldn't score the goals. Today, we finally scored a few goals and played well defensively. Overall, I think Buffalo didn't have too many chances."

That they didn't, especially early on when the Red Wings took 18 shots on net while playing nearly most of the first period in the Sabres' zone.

"We talked a lot about just getting to the net and shooting the puck," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We got off to a good start, and had the puck a lot."

Dallas Drake and Kirk Maltby also scored for the Red Wings, who snapped a four-game losing streak and pulled five points ahead of the Dallas Stars for the top spot in the Western Conference.

What made the win even that much sweeter for the Red Wings was the absence of Henrik Zetterberg from the scoresheet. It didn't matter that Detroit's leading scorer didn't figure in on any of the scoring, with the grinding line of Drake, Maltby and Kris Draper picking up with two goals and an assist.

"We need to contribute more to help out," said Maltby, who scored for the first time since Oct. 26. "We've been finding ways to lose games, and we weren't getting the job done. Tonight, we got the lead and finished strong."

Hasek, making his second straight start after being sidelined for nearly three weeks with a hip injury, improved to 5-1-2 in nine career games against the Sabres, the team he developed into a star for from 1992-2001.

The Red Wings once again played without three key injured defensemen: Nicklas Lidstrom (knee), Brian Rafalski (groin) and Chris Chelios (knee).

Rookie Patrick Kaleta and Jason Pominville scored for the slumping Sabres, who lost for the fourth time in five games (1-3-1). Buffalo continues to be in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, three points behind eighth-place Philadelphia.

Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller finished with 35 saves.

"We have to get better," he said. "There's no excuses. Every last guy has to be smarter and better."

Kaleta opened the scoring just under three minutes in when he snuck a wrist shot from the slot that got past Hasek.

But the Red Wings gained control with three unanswered goals that bridged the first and second periods, with Drake's third of the year at 11:56 of the first sparking the spurt.

Filppula made it 2-1 with a power-play goal five minutes into the second, converting a nifty tic-tac-toe passing play with Jiri Hudler and Franzen. It was Filppula's 18th of the season, and second in three games.

Franzen then pushed Detroit's lead to 3-1 just over nine minutes later with his 13th.

Pominville's power-play goal - his 20th overall - 3:12 into the third made it 3-2. Maltby capped the scoring with his fourth with 4:08 remaining in regulation.

"We didn't play the way we wanted to," Pominville said. "As the game went on we got better, but against a team like Detroit, the best team in the league, it was too late."

GAME NOTES: Buffalo C Jochen Hecht missed his fifth game because of a pulled leg muscle/groin injury. ... Detroit starts a season-high five-game homestand on Wednesday against St. Louis. ... Pominville was named Buffalo's captain for the month of March. ... Miller, a Michigan native, made his 19th consecutive start. ... It was the first time Detroit played in Buffalo since Dec. 10, 2003.

It's also good to have Brad Stuart joining us from LA at this critical time.

The Wings hope that Stuart can help make an immediate impact to a defensive corps decimated by injuries lately. Stuart will likely be partnered with Niklas Kronwall when the Wings host the San Jose Sharks on Friday.

Friday’s game will be Kronwall’s first since suffering a clavicle injury against Phoenix on Jan. 30.

“I haven’t seen a lot of him, but we’ve played him a couple of times,” said Kronwall of his new defensive partner. “He’s very solid, strong D. He’s a good hitter, a great hitter. It will definitely be real exciting to be out there with him. I think he’ll be a huge player for us.”

Even with Kronwall’s return and the addition of Stuart, the Wings are without the veteran services of captain Nicklas Lidstrom (knee), Brian Rafalski (groin) and Chris Chelios (leg).

Mate, you forgot Straka and Lang. Lalime was a compartively recent addition to the time when Jagr, Kovaled, Straka, etc were playing. Pittsburg signed Lalime a year or two after he lost the series against the leafs when he allowed 4 goals in quick time. With Jagr, Kovi and Straka, Lang and co they wouldn't have finished among the last teams in nhl and wouldn't have had Crosby. Although, the lottery after the lockout, even gave teams like Montreal Canadians a shot at Crosby. That would have been crazy he wound up playing for the Canadians since they were his favourite team growing up. Kasparatis played for bunch of teams after he left Pittsburg. He was with the Rangers but got waived by them, played in American hockey league for awhile but currently he's playing for a Russian league team called St. Petersburg.

Too little too late. They won't make it. They are behind by 8 points with 12 games to go. They need to win 10 out 12 and the other teams (including teams below flyers) to lose at least 7 games out of 12. Not very likely.

Leafs have to play habs twice in their remaining games. They need to win 11 out of 12 games and flyers need to lose 7 times. Very slim chance. Sabres lost yesterday which was good for the leafs. Sundin left early last game. If he's gone, so are leaf's slight chance of making the playoffs. Habs leafs would be good but one canadian team would be out but as a habs fan nothing would be sweeter than beating the leafs in the playoffs. I like the way western conference is shaping up as well. As of today Dallas would face Anaheim. Of all the good teams in western conference, I think Dallas is best equipped to take out Anaheim Ducks. With the addition of Richards they have two solid offensive lines and plus Richards is a good faceoff man. In playoffs he will be extremely valauable in the defensive end killing penalties, defending leads, trying to tie games in close games. Really wish Habs still have Yanick Perrault, really would have been handy for the playoffs. The concern over the goal tending is all but over with Price shutting out the devils in a game that was meaningful for both teams. Allez les tricouleurs!

Toronto got 10 games left, not 12. Wishful thinking says they need to get 18 out of 20 possible points to get it done. 16 could still get them in, but that would need losing streaks of other teams in the fight. And it might as well come down to the last game of the regular season, against the Habs. This could be one classic spring!

Sundin left early last game. If he's gone, so are leaf's slight chance of making the playoffs.

Sundin has a minor groin muscle strain, and he's not expected to miss any game time. Well, this all-so-suddenly gutty, gritty Toronto team pulled it out without their leader last night. Any longer stretch of absence of Sundin surely would have decimated the flickering hopes of the faithful Leafs nation.

I like the way western conference is shaping up as well. As of today Dallas would face Anaheim. Of all the good teams in western conference, I think Dallas is best equipped to take out Anaheim Ducks.

The Western Conf always produces jaffas like the Pacific Division standing! Three Stanley Cup contenders in one division, and one of them will surely be gone from the race after first round of playoffs. Too bad... watch out for the Sharks to take down both the Ducks and Stars... their 10-0 run gotta count for something!

How bout the Northwest Div with 2 points separating Calgary, Colorado, Minnesota and Vancouver! And all 4 seem to have made their place in the playoffs. But Nashville will have a say.

You guys are so lucky to have live hockey in your lives, while returnees like myself are lost in a culture without it.

Anyway, here's a trip down the memory lane. I was at the Joe for this one with my ex-wife, a Colorado native and a die-hard Avs fan. They were the Cup champions at the time and we were still looking for our first cup in years, despite stringing together a number of increasingly promising regular seasons since the arrival of the GREAT Scotty Bowman.

Chris Draper came back from his injury during the middle of the season and his best friend Darren McCarty wanted a make a point with Claude Lemieux, possibly one of the dirtiest players in NHL history.

Then things began to happen quickly until they exploded into the stuff of NHL legend. It was especially SWEET to have Darren score the winning goal in overtime !

Enjoy this fellas ... :)

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5yXCjBO-2A4&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5yXCjBO-2A4&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Previous incident

In Game 6 of the 1996 Western Conference Finals, Avalanche right wing Lemieux checked Draper from behind while he was off balance; Draper was in a vulnerable position, yet Lemieux not only applied the hit but followed through, driving Draper's face into the boards.

The hit sent Draper out of the game and into the hospital with a broken jaw, shattered cheek and orbital bone, which required reconstructive surgery involving his jaw being wired shut and numerous stitches. Draper did not return to play until the middle of the following season. The Avalanche would go on to defeat the Red Wings in 6 games, eventually winning the Stanley Cup. After the traditional handshakes that take place after a playoff series, former Red Wing winger Dino Ciccarelli said of Lemieux, "I can't believe I shook the guy's frigging hand."

The brawl

In the next regular season, although the two teams had played each other three times without incident, this fourth meeting on the night of March 26 was different. As tensions mounted early in the first period with incidents involving Kirk Maltby, Rene Corbet, Brent Severyn, and Jamie Pushor, a melee ensued at the 18:22 mark. Shortly after a collision between Red Wings center Igor Larionov and Avalanche forward Peter Forsberg, Wings enforcer Darren McCarty seized the chance to avenge his Grind Line teammate by escaping a referee's grasp and hitting Lemieux with a right hook from the side. McCarty laid many blows on Lemieux, who fell to the ice and covered his head (labeled "turtling" by the hockey media); McCarty managed to land a few more punches, drag Lemieux to the boards, and knee him in the head before the two were separated by officials.

Other players became engaged in the hostilities when Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy skated out of his net to defend his teammate; he was intercepted by Red Wings forward Brendan Shanahan, who was skating at full speed, with an open ice body check, sending him sprawling momentarily. While Shanahan and Colorado defenseman Adam Foote fought, Wings goalie Mike Vernon went out to center ice to meet Roy. Vernon, despite being almost half a foot shorter and fifteen pounds lighter than Roy, sent him to the bench with a cut on his right eyebrow, which bled noticeably after the fight. The fight between Larionov and Forsberg ended with the oft-injured Forsberg aggravating an injury. Forsberg did not return to the ice, sitting out the remainder of the game. Patches of blood on the ice were visible before the ice was resurfaced by the zamboni.

After several more fights with according penalties, including a fight between Shanahan and Foote four seconds into the second period, the game was able to continue. When the third period ended, the score was tied 5-5. Ironically, it was McCarty who scored the winner against Roy in overtime, on an assist from Shanahan and Larionov.

Aftermath

Mike Vernon, who won his 300th career game, believed the brawl-filled game "brought the Red Wings together" in time for the playoffs. Colorado head coach Marc Crawford (now head coach of the Los Angeles Kings), meanwhile, wondered why McCarty did not receive a game misconduct for his largely one-sided instigation and subsequent fight with Lemieux (McCarty received a double-roughing minor for that incident, and also received a fighting major later in the game). Subsequently, Avs right winger Mike Keane criticized Draper for having McCarty fight on his behalf.

The Red Wings went on to win the first of two consecutive Stanley Cups ...

This could be one classic spring!

I fear not. Habs pushing for the top spot this year. They have a bit more to gain than the leafs in those 2 games who to me might be better off trying to win the Stamkos derby rather than getting into the playoffs. This year's draft is the deepest in last 3 years so losing games to end up somewhere in the top five in the entry draft selection wouldn't be bad. Drew Doughty is a good defenceman. But unless leafs are in top 3 he will probably be gone. Another Defenceman they can get is Luke Schenn. A shutdown d, who is mobile and can shoot the puck. With Hal Gill gone, Kubina possibly not returning leafs may look to draft a big strong d with attitude to boast with size. Alex Pietrangelo is another defenceman who game has been compared to Nick Lidstrom but GM's think he's half as good as Nick he'll be gone in top 3. Amongst the top forwards, besides Stamkos, there's also Zach Boychuk who's good but kinda short, Nikita Filatov good puck skills guy but again Russian so it will take him a few years to learn the NA game, Joe Colborne is big tall centreman whose good in faceoff teams always look for those, many more. Although there is greater depth compared to last 2-3 years in this draft, there are more dependable defenceman available then great scorers. I think leafs will most likely select Nikita Filatov because they need an offensive player or two to replace Mats if he retires next year or the year after that.

Sundin has a minor groin muscle strain, and he's not expected to miss any game time.

He didn't play last game and they lost.

Yea but Sharks always choke during playoffs. Marleau, is picking up lately but still is not the threat he once was. So most of offense falls on Thorton. You don't get too many powerplays during playoffs. Can they score 5 on 5 against elite western conference teams? Addition of Campbell helps tremendously in their back end and for the powerplay but he's not a physcial defenceman. Ducks (the whole team), Dallas (Morrow), and even Calgary if they make in the second round will punish him and their whole d with their forechecks. [/quote]

How bout the Northwest Div with 2 points separating Calgary, Colorado, Minnesota and Vancouver! And all 4 seem to have made their place in the playoffs. But Nashville will have a say.

Nashville with Mason won't get anywhere. Colorado brought in good players at the trade deadline but those players are not available due to injury or are in rehabiliation. Calgary's starting to ride on their goalie like they did in past. If Mika gets hot they may win a series or two but Flames don't have anyone other than Iggy who you can count on offensively. Their AGF is less then 3 while they allow bit less than 3 goals. All it means unless Mika and Iggy together get hot they won't win a single playoffs series. Vancouver will lose in the first round if at all they make it this year. Minnesota in past used to be able to win 1-0 but now with most of their shutdown guys gone to Canucks they can't hold onto small leads anymore.

Usually US dominates but the joke is that they don't count our hockey medals. Both our men and women's hockey team won gold in hockey 2002. If you count individually it equals to 46 medals. For international hockey I think you're allowed to dress 20 players (13 forwards and 7 ds). For the tournament usually 3 goalies get picked. So it's 23 medals each in team equalling 46 but unfortunately they only count for 2 in the medal standing. Another classic from Don Cherry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ppcb31KGuHE&feature=related

IC- Why are the Habs not playing Price? He was impossible to score on when we faced them. Is there a goalie controversy? Huet was also shipped to the Caps in the dead line.

No controversy. It's just that Halak hadn't lost at home in Bell centre and plus he was coming off a shutout. Price will be in net next game. Habs lost a golden opportunity to grab first place yesterday. Of the 8 playoffs team as of yesterday Habs were tied with flyers for overtime losses. Luckily there's no shoot out in playoffs. I absolutely hate shoot out. Not because habs lose but just because it takes away the team component out of the game. Habs need favours from Rangers tonight. Rangers are losing 1-0 to devils in the first. Hopefully Jagr, Straka and co can score some goals. They better. Of the 8 playoffs teams flyers really don't scare any teams. In fact Washington might sneak in for 8th. As long as Habs don't finish 4th or 5th they will be ok. Even though, the sens have losing for while, the fact no one is counting them to do anything may just propel them to do well in the playoffs. Wouldn't want to face Pittsburgh. They've had the offense for awhile now but with some new addition to blue lines and with Fleury back between pipes, their chances look brighter than ever. Need Crosby playing at his best if they are to win the cup. NJ with Brodeur in net, anything is possible. Yet another 40 win season for monsieur Brodeur but I think Nabakov might win the vegina this year. Nabakov's got more wins and shutout and slightly better GAA than Brodeur but Brodeur's got a better save%. By the way, did anyone see the Chris Pronger kicking Ryan Kessler in his calf, few days ago. That's dangerous because don't have protection there. Shin pads protect the front (shin) but calf remains unprotected. Players tape the socks so it's stays in one place. He only got 8 games for that whereas Chris Simone who committed a similar deliberate act got 30 games last year. Double standards? One sets of rules for star players and another sets for border line NHLers? Pronger will lose $609756 from his salary. The money will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. Still annoyed with that decision.

Just wanted to feel part of the BC's hockey fans... the game's been up there behind cricket for me ever since I came to Canada 8 years ago. You won't find many Bangali guys here live the passion of the fastest game on earth. Nor would you see tears rolling down the cheek of very many folks when a superstar face of a franchise keeps a playoff series alive by scoring the game-tying goal with 21.8 seconds to go in Game 6 regulation! Talk of acknowledging the heart, dedication and resilience. It was unbelieveable.

Btw, Nocturnal used to sneak into hockey talks here regularly, no noise now somehow!

Rangers beat Devils.

I hate shootout as well. Specially, so close to playoffs. Lot of teams, for example the Devils ( all of their games end in shoot outs for some reason ) play for the overtime. Even if they lose they make sure of 1 point. When you are ahead in the table like they are, getting at least a point makes sure that they keep on maintaining their position. For teams chasing playoffs like Sabres, Caps etc..it is a bit unfair. For them every game is a three point game. I think when you lose, you should not get any points. Period.

I am not afraid of Flyers either. We should be able to beat them. Not so sure about the other six teams. Carolina has our number. Ottawa beat us so bad last year and they are tough in playoffs. Don't want any part of Habs in the first round. Rangers scare me. I would rather play the Devils, but that is not gonna happen. Pens have chased Brodeaur before and usually play him good. Boston will be my favorite.

I think Caps will sneak in. If they do, watch out !

How could possibly miss you in my shout-out ? ! Sorry bro, please accept my apologies.

BTW, do any of you play Ice or in-line hockey? If so, what position? I played both, usually RW. I was pretty good at avoiding contact and had a pretty decent wrist shot too, but not good enough play for the IHL Spiders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Spiders).

Anyway, it's great to have Nicklas back in action again with an assist against the BJs, and it's always good to see Zettterberg do what he does best.

Calgary will make the playoffs. I am assuming based on your comment that you're an Oilers fan. Edmenton's still got slim chance. 5 points behind final spot. 3 teams (Flames, Canucks, avalanche) are tied with 84 for that final spot. Nashville has 80 points, Oilers 79. Flames and Canucks have one game in hand over Oilers. Oilers play at home to Vancouver. Massive game. Oilers score enough goals in fact of the 8 playoffs team only the wings and stars have more goals for than Edmenton. Goals against is the real problem. Except for flames who have allowed 204 goals, none of the other playoffs team in the western conference have allowed 200 goals. Oilers have allowed 226. Rollie the goalie has been struggling a lot. Garon has player better than Rollie and that's why they still have a glimmer of hope but if they can't play defense no shot at making the playoffs. Oilers have good young players though. Gagner, Penner (not that young but young enough), Cogliano, etc. Of the remaining 8 games 6 games are extremely important. Oilers play 2 times against avalanche, flames and canucks; teams they are trying to catch up. 2 other games are against Wilds. If wilds lose both of those games against Oilers, Flames, and Canucks will also benefit. Northwest is far from decided. The mantra for Oilers should be to play a tight defensive game. Can't take it to shoot out because opposition will gain a point in the process harming their chances, even though they are really good at it. Hope this cheers you up nocturnal.

Good to see Sohel NR and Beamer's list of sports they play and enjoy. Here's mine.
Hockey: Centre (played till age of 14) injury and parents forced me out.
Soccer: LM (after cricket, probably played it the most) though not @ organized level.
Football: played Linebacker in juniors, and cornerback in high school.
Rugby: never played mostly because I don't know how it's played.
Baseball: Shortstop (I love fielding, no great power) never played @ organized level.
Cricket: early order batsman, field anywhere just not in "silly" positions.
Basketball: not that good. Shooting half decent.
Tennis: Like to hit the ball hard. Need to improve my serve and backhand.

Bad days for Leafs fans... ki aar kora! :( But really, no apologies for someone akin to your nephew :) ...thoughts in heart don't always transfer through the strokes of keys on a keyboard. It's a great feeling to have someone like you as part of this BC-hockey contingent.

I fancy playing road-hockey or ball-hockey, whichever you call it.. tried being the goalie on my first game ever in high school, and gave up only 12 on a dozen shots or so! Since then, I prefer the position that Mats play :) The wrist-shot has beaten goalies more often than not... :smug: And oh, I have ZERO experience and NO IDEA how to skate! :-D

As far as other sports/game that I've actually played in reality, (lol @ you guys' fantasies), and my positions are concerned...

Cricket : Top-order bat; like to field at Point/Slips/Silly positions, some keeping abilities
Badminton : Front,Back and Sideways :-p
Chess : Black
Football & Handball : Goalie (a liiiittle better than the one played with all kinds of gears)
Baseball : Played for fun, and did OK with the bat
Basketball & American Football : Played, but had NO fun = can't play!

Leafs win again.

They played decent enough last year to stay out of the playoffs by one point. They are playing pretty outstanding for the last 2 and half months. Last year i thought they will definitely make the playoffs this year.
Now i am wondering the same thing. Can they play this good next year?
What do you think IC?

Ishtylish cricketer
March 22, 2008, 08:34 PM
If all the regulars stayed healthy this year they would have made the playoffs. Um, in the off season I think leafs will make some changes. McCabe probably won't play in Toronto anymore. He wants to go to the Islanders (wife's from there). I think Andrew Raycroft (the backup) will be gone (not sure about his contract situation but I think it expires at July first, maybe put in waivers). Kubina has a no trade but maybe traded. They will probably bring in Justin Pogge from the Marlies. These are the major moves that I think will occur. Leafs for a long time haven't built from within meaning they've always traded drafts and prospect to be good for the immediate future but I don't see them going down that path again. Secondly, they have to get a GM. Cliff Flectcher is an intrim GM and has a 18 months contract (probably less). Here are the list of GMs leafs would like to get: Brian Burke (under contract and repeatedly said he doesn't want to leave Anaheim), Carolina GM Jim Rutherford (most likely bet), perhaps even Scotty Bowman, Gilmour's name thrown up once in awhile (but unlikely given that inexperienced Fergusson jr. failed miserably), Kevin Lowe is not available but leafs would have hired him in a heart beat. Given the changes leafs management need to make, it's unlikely that the team will be good in the near future. Management repeatedly said that they are building for the future however, with good drafting and marlies players developing quickly, in 3 to 4 years leafs will be dominating once again. Also, in a playoff team there are two good centreicemen. Leafs have only one at this instance. How will they get another? Free agency? Right now there's no clear #2 centreman. Signings like Kubina's and Blake's cost a lot of money though right now Kubina is living up to the bargain. Blake's signing though has been eating up too much salary for someone with less than 20 goals. But he deserves some symphathy because he's dealing with lot more than hockey. For those who don't follow leafs he's been treated with chronic myelogenous leukemia. If Sundin retires there's no #1 or #2 centreman. Poni and Antropov need to play even better. But defence will suffer with McCabe and Kubi gone so White and Carlo need to play exceedingly well 5 on 5. Stajan and Steen need to develop quickly and right are they are playing like 3rd liners. Even with increased ice time they have less than 50 points. Leafs just need to draft well and not worry about results for a year or two.

Yeah leafs unintentionally did the habs a favour by beating the Sens. Habs are 5 points up now in northeast and climbed to #1 again in the east. Need someone to beat the Pens so that the lead over them stays. Pens have a game in hand and won the regular season series against Habs if I am not mistaking. Really wish habs face bruins in the playoffs. Another possible opponent for the habs could be the Flyers. They are #8 and have good checkers so even if habs face them in the first round and win the playoffs series the impact of their hits will be felt in the series and key players maybe out. With Komisarek gone for 2-3 weeks, habs will miss his toughness and leadership in the back. Price looked good yet again last night.

Nocturnal bhai, both teams from Alberta did well this weekend. Both flames and oilers won. Oils are 3 points back. I hope they get in. More canadian teams the better. We need the cup where hockey matters the most and where the cup belongs: Canada. Last few years the cup went to places where hockey is less popular than beach volleyball and places where they never experience snow. Tampa Bay, Carolina (I am not sure if it snows there) and Anaheim.

Can't wait till playoffs start. Best series will be Dallas vs Anaheim. I think and hope Dallas will beat Anaheim. Almost always, there's a surprise team in the conference final. I think from west it may be Vancouver if Luango gets hot and in the east Rangers could surprise teams. They need to finish 6th to get a favourable match up against the hurricanes. Brind'amour's injured and their defence is fragile.

Check this out guys. This is a fight that took place between quebec Ramperts (fall of fame goaltender Patrick Roy's son) Jonathan Roy and the Chicoutimi goalie Bobby Nadeau (in the second period of a 7-1 hockey game at the time...don't know the final score was nor do I care) in a best of seven playoffs series. J. Roy despite the official's best attempt to contain him managed to escape, took off Nadeau's mask and punched the defenseless goalie 15 times ie gave him the beating of a life time. After doing that he pointed the middle finger to the Chicoutimi crowd; needless to say they didn't appreciate the gesture and threw stuff on ice. Seconds later he took on another player from Chicoutimi who jumped in the ice to take revenge of his tender but Jonathan took him out as well. It was all over the media in Canada. Playoffs series is now 1-0 in favour of Chicoutimi with next 2 games in Quebec. Reminiscent of Habs and Nordics rivalry. Here's a small clip from global news. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C9zp8f2AS8

Tame loss by the Pens to the Islanders. They seem not to want the no. 1 seed. Everytime the opportunity presents itself, they somehow manage to find a way to lose. Great game between Habs and Sens. I think Habs will end up with the no.1 seed. We have a lot of tough games ahead this week and next.

Yeah. You can bet he won't be back with the leafs next year so they need to sell his ability and basically pray that he plays well for remainder of the season which 5-6 games that way leafs will get some good young players or possibly a shut down d for him. Is he a rfa or ufa? Leafs won't get too much for Raycroft anyway. The way I see it, McCabe and Kubina in most likelihood won't be back so they will need couple of stay at home defencemen.

Take that, les blues-blancs-et-rouges! An early exit from the Playoffs at the hands of the much disliked Flyers would be just as sweet, or even the Bruins for that matter!

Winning against a backup goalie is never an exuse! :-p Nobody said Price cant get back-to-back starts. If Carbonneau can take an out-of-playoffs Leafs team lightly, I guess it was the result the Canadiens deserved.

You're right. Pens lost in OT so they still managed to pick up a point. #1 in east is still up for grabs. If Habs take #2 it would mean that they would face Boston whom they swept in the regular season series. Main concern for the Habs is the loss of captain Saku Koivu for the remainder of the regular season. He has a small fracture on his right foot. Big loss to say the least. His speed, passing and faceoff presence will be missed. We don't have too many good faceoff man and in the playoffs defensive and offensive zone faceoffs are keys to success. Kovi needs to carry it a bit more. I seriously think Kovi should get some votes for the Hart Memorial Trophy and Ovechkin should win it.

Beamer

Still managed a point and stay two clear of Montreal. You never know who gonna play who. Parity is something to behold this year in the East. I guess we have to wait until Sunday to find out the final standings. We will take #2 as well. Less pressure.

Pens have face-off issues as well. We don't have a good face-off man. Crosby is probably the best in the team, but, not as good as some premier face-off men. Staal is improving in that aspect.

I was always a huge fan of Kovi. He was once my favorite Pens. After last seasons debacle, he has really shown this year what type of player he is. He might get a vote or two, so will Malkin, but it is going to be Ovechkin hands down if Caps make it. Failure to make it to the playoffs might turn off a few. My vote is with Malkin.

I pray we play the Flyers. The goonery won't take them far. As long as Biron is the next opponent, I will happily take them. They thought they could out physical us and play the bully style. Not gonna work with these Pens any more. Ruttu, Larqaque, Orpik, Roberts, Malone can play that style and by way of superior skills and better goalie, I like my chances against them.

Whats happening with Ottawa?

Is Capital is going to make it or not?

The fight for 8th spot is getting pretty interesting.

Caps' Playoff Scenarios:

Here is the simplest breakdown of the scenarios .

If they win both of their remaining games, they get in if:

1) The Senators lose one of their final two games (Leafs, Bruins) in regulation or lose both in OT., or

2) The Bruins lose one of their final two games (Senators, Sabres) in regulation or lose both in OT. or

3) The Flyers lose one of their final games (Devils, Pens) in regulation or OT. or

4) The 'Canes lose to the Panthers in regulation or OT. or

5) If tomorrow's Bruins-Sens game ends in regulation, the most one of those teams can get is 94 points. The Caps hold the tiebreaker against both.

Now if they loose one of the games, the scenerio is much much complex and highly unlikely

Ugly closeout to the home schedule for the Leafs... should've dumped the Sens into more miseries with a chance of missing the playoffs on their minds, but it wasn't to happen on this night. :( Good for Mark Bell on knocking Alfredsson out cold... poor Bell has the jail doors awaiting soon after the season's over.

Vancouver lost to Edmonton yesterday. Somebody's going to get fired there. Edmonton's future looks good. They need to draft one or possibly two good defenceman and give Garon a long term contract or draft a goalie. The best available defenceman who is closest to being NHL ready is Drew Doughty but he will probably be gone in top 3. Edmonton should do trade up or something to get him.

How dare you bud? Les habitants vont remporter la coupe Stanley cette année. Just need Dallas Stars to beat the Ducks. We can take on the Sharks and Wings with injured players. Especially the Sharks, they haven't got too many effective enforcers to rattle up our speedy forwards. All habs would need to do is score goals and clough up neutral zone. Sharks have have solid goaltending though.

It sure looked that way the way we played from the drop off the puck. I don't think they did that on purpose though. Both teams looked uninterested in the game. Pens were playing a lot of guys who haven't played in a long time due to injuries- Roberts, Beech, Hall. Sid was also not available. Even Cote and Laraque were playing each other like they are best friends! About Murray, he can say whatever he wants, no body cares..

Nice opening victory for us. 4-0 is nice though we didn't play too well. That Gary Roberts is something. After all he went through this year, comes out and scores two goals in front of goal, and laid out some punishing hits all night long.

Rangers beat Devils. I think this Rangers team is very good. They have the potential to go all the way.

We can take on the Sharks and Wings with injured players. Especially the Sharks, they haven't got too many effective enforcers to rattle up our speedy forwards. All habs would need to do is score goals and clough up neutral zone. Sharks have have solid goaltending though.

I would favour Montreal against other teams from the West except San Jose and Detroit. Montreal is surely talented with skilled young guns and good team speed, but those two giants from the West are more complete teams and better equipped to go through 4 series of playoffs hockey. Detroit knows how to turn unfavorable conditions into wins and San Jose has apparently brought in their last missing puzzle in one of the superior puck-moving d-man in the league in Brian Campbell. And lastly, Carey Price does look like the real deal, but playoff hockey is something else. Championship teams start from prime goaltending, and Price has much to prove.

Pens survive? If it wasn't for Gerber, we would have been up by at least six goals, such was the ferocious pace we played with. Credit to Ottawa for clawing back and tie the score at 3-3 against the run of the play. There was only going to be one winner last night, and thats the Pens after rattling 54 shots. Had Ottawa won, based on the game, it could have been said that Ottawa survived.

Henrik looks kingly against an offensively challenged Devils.

Its a long way to go still. No point predicting the outcome of any series after two games. We will get a more clear picture after the third game.

Beams it's true. I saw bits of the game. GWG was a flukey one. Wrap around that most times would have been stopped. It was 3-3 with a minute to go. Empty netters made the score look bad. Sens are missing Alfie, Fisher and defensive centreman Kelly and do they ever need those guys.

Beamer

You saw bits of the game. I saw the entire one standing on my toes on the upper rafts. Believe me, there was going to be only one winner. It was not a flukey goal. Gerber went too far ahead. Malone saw it and wrapped it around. Had Gerber stayed in the crease a bit more, he saves it probably. But, he didn't and that is the bottom line. About Sens missing their guns! Well, A Pens fan has no part of that conversation considering what we went through all season. Just imagine playing without Price and Kovalev for two-three months and many other players.

Pens were missing Crosby and Fleury. Still had Malkin, Sykora, Malone, Staal, ie. secondary scoring and with the offense these guys provide playing goal is pretty easy knowing that you just have to make some saves and Conklin did that for most part. Sens lost their most valuable player and that too when the team's struggling. Considering the circumstances the Sens are in, that's a bigger loss then the Pens losing Crosby and Fleury because there are other guys who can do the job for the Pens while the Sens seem lost without their best player. They forgot to show up in game 1 though in game 2 played bit better. Gerber stood on his head and I felt sens could have walked out with a victory but stopped skating in the last 5 of the game. Depth issue. There's no question Sens were outplayed for majority of the game. Would have made for a better series for a neutral like myself had the Sens squeezed out a victory on game 2. I would've liked to watch the full game but I was studying for exams that are coming up shortly. Unfortunately I probably won't be able to watch the habs game tonight either. Gotta study.

Good luck with the exams IC.

Well, with players that are hurting for the Sens now and missing in action were there during last month or so during which time they also managed to almost miss the playoffs! They haven't been playing well with their full arsenal. So, that excuse is not valid. We, on the other hand, when Fleury when down were an average team. After Crosby went down on Jan 18, we just buckled up, won the division and almost the conf. Missing in action for long period of times: Talbot, Roberts, Hall-high ankle sprain- who are valuable character guys. Also, lost for season Mark Eaton- one of the top defensive guy. We just kept on borrowing guys from Scranton to plug holes, and off course, Malkin played like an MVP, but, we overcame it all and not prepared to hear other teams excuse for injury. For a neutral observers point of view, will appreciate if the Bruins win tonight. That will just be great!

Uh you americans! Bring up things that not worth talking about because it makes you guys look very foolish. There are only 6 Canadian teams in the league whereas US has 24. Obviously the probabality is against us but in the last few years a canadian team has made it to the cup final. Canadians are playing for the US cities that makes the difference. If canadians played for candian cities only, you guys would r. Name one team where the best player is American and has carried the team? Arguably the best American born player is Mike Modano but you can't find him in the point lists of first 30 players. From his team two canadians Riberio and Morrow both made that list. The ducks who won last year had 14 candians out of the 19 dressed. Carolina, TB all won with Canadian and few Russian and Sweedish players contributing not Americans. The standard of US hockey is so low that you guys get our rejects and are happy to receive them too. Take Jason Pommonville's example. He's canadian who's applying for US citizenship just so he can actually play in the olympics. Brian Burke a harvard grad (degree in law) even said he wants Canadians in his team because well we're better than the rest at hockey. You may have forgotten that Pens' best player in history (Mario Lemieux, a proud french Canadian hailing from la belle province of Quebec from the city of Laval), Crosby (the pride of Pearl harbour Nova Scotia), Marc Andre Fleury (from Quebec), Christopher Letang (quebecois). Second best player is definitely Malkin, after that Hossa, Sykora, Staal. Malone is the only American guy who's got any points. Where are the rest of your americans? I can't really see them because we have like 24 stanley cups covering the eyes. I hope you don't mind the friendly banter.

Oh boy IC..what a touchy response. I was just taking a dig at Bancan for his comment about the disallowed goal, and since he resides in Canada, I am sure he had rooting interest for Sens. NHL would be nothing without Canadian players or Canada, that much is given, but right now, my team is on a roll and the team that I am scared of the most is the Canadiens. It natural for me to root against them. Also, I assume, every Canadiens ( habs ) fan look at the Pens as their biggest threat. In that context, rooting for the Habs to lose is a very natural thing for me, and since they are from Canada, hence the response. Funny you guys. My brother-in-law is exactly this way. They live in Calgary and big Flames fan. Every time I mention anything remotely unfavorable towards a Canadian team, I get the same lecture, which has me thinking and exploring the nature of complexes that can develop living near an object that casts a big shadow! The Pens have always been blessed with the Hall of Famer Canadiens and few in the making..

I don't mind the friendly banter. You shouldn't either. I will continue to take a dig at Habs until they are eliminated!

Beams don't feel bad about us being proud of our hockey players. The only sport we
re good in. We have individual achievements like Nash winning MVP twice, Moreau winning MVP in MLB, but hockey is what we're known for and what we really care about. So, you shouldn't take my words personally. It's like aussies reminding each and everyone that will listen to them that they are the best.

Beams, Preds can't beat the wings in Detroit. They have yet to win a single playoffs series game there. They still have a capable back up even if Hasek leaks in a few softies. Rangers with the tight defensive game can shut down good offensive teams and that Avery guy gets on everyone's nerves. I seriously want someone to sucker punch that guy in the back of the head, Bertuzzi style. Their goalie is amazing and good depth in offense. I am not worried about Pens. Whatever happens happens. If the habs are to win it, I want the habs to beat any team strong or weak that may stand in the way. I want Anaheim out of the Stanley cups finals though. They've got too many tough western canadians. Haha. Detroit won't make it to final, just my gut feeling. I hope Calgary makes it against the Wilds.

Beamer
April 17, 2008, 09:11 PM
Point well taken. I won't take it personally. Believe me. I also am convinced that you need a lot of gritty Canadian players to win the Cup. We had our share of Czech dominated team in mid to late nineties after Mario retired and we went no where.

What the heck was Price doing tonight? Looked very shaky. Habs should have closed the deal. Good come back by Bruins. I thought they are all dead and buried. Habs in game six.

I meant Detroit in later rounds. They will get by against Preds. I agree about everything you said about Rangers. They have a lot experience and good young players mixed with the bunch. Goalie is a stud and their defense is good and mobile. Avery is a joke. Ryan Malone beat him up real good a few months ago. It was a good fight.

I want no parts of Anaheim. They are the best team. I have the same feeling about Detroit. They look slow to me.
