To be honest, I know very little about the "other" players. I am aware that Barisal has the dubious distinction of being the weakest team.

What the heck.. it is my ancestral home and I am backing Barisal all the way.

C'mon Hannan Sarkar. Who are the others ?

Aha my late step-dad's country, a beautiful place I know rather well.

Shahriar Nafees, Talha Jubair, Raquibul "Triple Hundred" Hasan and Shaheen Hossain, a damn good keeper from what I hear, loads of dismissals so far ... :)

Here's the team: -

BARISAL: Shahriar Nafees (captain), Hannan Sarkar, Imran Ahmed, Raquibul Hasan, Nasiruddin Faruque, Shaheen Hossain (wicketkeeper), Abul Bashar, Arafat Salauddin, Ali Arman Rajan, Talha Jubair, Sajjadul Islam, Debobroto Paul, Lablur Rahman, Tarikul Islam, Humayun Kabir, Ahsanullah Hasan, Raisul Islam, Proshenjit Bose, Monowar Hossain, Ariful Haque.

Thanks. So any possible rehabilitation of Sarkar could possibly come at the expense of Nafees. More likely, the other opening position with Omar off the scene. I can hear the cheers already.

Apart from Talha, I don't think I have heard of anyone else. This 300 you refer to, was this in a first class match ?

Yup!! The weakest team beat Chittagong which included "Terror" Tamim, his elder brother "the rock" Iqbal, "Boom boom" Aftab, "Mr. Consistant" Nazimuddin, "Super talented" Dhiman Ghosh, "Captain" Ehsan.

Yup! losing to the weakest team makes stronger teams like Chittagong what?

The Rajshahi, Dhaka and Khulna fans should demand two seperate leagues i.e. the "Super three NCL" and "Bottom three NCL".

Chitagong, Slyhet and Rajshahi is no match to the Super Three.

The Rajshahi, Dhaka and Khulna fans should demand two seperate leagues i.e. the "Super three NCL" and "Bottom three NCL".
Don't think those fans will do that knowing strengths of teams will vary a lot in the midway of NCL, when national cricketers will be pulled out of the league.

Barisal will probably lose SN only and Sylhet Rahim. Other than that those two teams will keep the same set of players they have now. Khulna and Dhaka will lose half of their 1st XI players to the national team. Rajshahi probably won't lose that many but will still lose their key players i.e. Reza, Mashud, and Zunaed. Chittagong ? Not sure yet how many players they will lose to the national team.

Fazal
October 30, 2007, 01:51 PM
Nothing to worry for top three teams. The impact of national Players in NCl is a Myth than reality. The strength of top three teams will still be good enough, in some cases they will produce even better result.

For example, Dhaka without Ashraful beat Slyhet by an innings.

Barisal has good variety in their bowling attack, while the batting, led by the incomparable Hannan Sarkar, lives and dies with young Raquibul Hassan's bat as Shahriar Nafees continues to falter.

With tall, aggressive, and pacy Suman Saha looking to be the most dangerous of the lot, and Talha Jubair's clever manipulation of line, length and repertore of swing and movement off the seam showing the way for the pacier and more balanced Sajidul Islam, they have a pace attack that can trouble any NCL side. Both Suman and Sajid look to be genuine test cricket prospects alongside a resurgent Talha before long.

Abul Bashar AbBa is a tenacious, no-frills spinner in the scrappy tradition of the late Manjarul Islam Rana, and with his partner Tariqul Islam capable of useful spells of his own, opposition batsmen are likely to give their wickets away lured into both forced and unforced errors. Arafat Saluddin the so called all-rounder, is still the overweight liability he has always been.

Sadly, Barisal's pathetic fielding and clueless, HaBa-esque captaincy don't help the cause of their good bowlers any. They need more Raquibuls and less Shahriar Nafeeses trying to catch and stop balls.

At the half way point, written off Barisal are just a point adrift of mightly Dhaka. Recognised now as having the best opening bowlers [ yes, ahead of Rasel and Murtaza ]. Only the batting has lacked teeth, particularly, Nafees and my old favourite, Hannan Sarkar.

SN needs to justify his stardom with some immediate performances. As the captain and the team's opening batsman, he has a ton of responsibility to shoulder. I personally always considered him the future captain of the national team, and sadly, he hasnt given me a lot to cheer so far in this NCL.

In the War of the Underdogs, Barisal is giving Sylhet a real pasting:

http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/bangladesh/engine/current/match/314077.html

Barisal have declared after taking a lead of 200. Sylhet managed to score only 183 despite the Barisal attack lacking both Talha and Sajid. Barisal's 383 for the loss of only 5 wickets included the incomparable Hannan Sarkar scoring 70 but also encouragingly Abul Bashar , "the Jonty Rhodes of Bangladesh", scoring 82 not out. Raqibul Hasan , for once, failed scoring only 36.
Sylhet have already lost 2 wickets for 4 runs. Barisal now have only Kapali between them and victory. Arafat Salahuddin being the bowling hero so far.

I must confess, i aint a true Barishailla. I cant even speak in Barishailla language. My friends, from other districts, are good mimickers than me.

He actually made this comment 3 years back in 2007 when Hannan Sharkar was at his peak and he was the only star player in Barishal team. (i am afraid, he is still now in this current team :()

Anyway, i agree that technically Hannan Sharkar is not perfect but you cant deny the fact that he performs well in Domestic circuit quite often. Just like Tushar Imran/ Faisal (Dickens).

Talking about other good players, as Isam bhai mentioned, Barisal have some good young players like opening batsman Asif Ahmed, off-spinner Sohag Gazi, batsmen Fazle Rabbi and Reazur Rahman and paceman Kamrul Islam Rabbi.

Do you not worry brother. Barisal is called "Venice of East" ! They are famous for Exporting goods like, Rice Fish, Betel leafs, bidi (local tobacco) and handicrafts...hopefully from now on, we will start Exporting Cricket players as well....no more importing ! :)

Having said that, Barisal cricket team is still in their initial stages like early days of Bangladesh cricket team. No doubt about their talent, only things missing are proper guidelines and financial help. Hopefully that will also be solved with the passage of time. :)

I hope recent performances of Barisal will encourage Local admins to develop cricket structure in Barisal. BCB also needs to take some initiatives here. They cant just afford to hold back !!
