The Oud (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oud) is incredible. It is in fact the predecessor to the modern European guitar, known to have come from the Lute or L'Oud. Muslims took this, modern system of musical chords and notations, and a plethora of other civilizing things to Europe centuries before the renaissance.

Also try Rabih Abou Khalil, if you like the sound.

I can assure you that his use of the word 'whisky' is akin to Imam Ghazzali and Maolana Rumi's allegorical use of the word 'wine'. Hamza Al Deen is very much a traditional Islamic poet and mystic ... :)

lol...was only joking about 'whisky'...it sounded like it in the text. I'm sure there was no whisky in the song:) The oud is one of my favourite instruments along with Kora (try- toumani diabate)!

Here is the contemporary Oud Master- the best musician of this age, in my reckoning:

Thanks for the link BCF.

I also dig Zinthir in Moroccan Gnawa music. I've embedded one such video.

Hamza Al Deen does use contemporary themes in his lyrics as do Ali Farka Toure and Sidi Yassir, all deeply rooted in traditional Islamic music of East and West Africa.

Haha... how can you be spiritual without getting high? Impossible.

Being 'naturally' high is more than possible without any other stuff...:)

Agreed but I also think it should be done on your own and not be a concerted effort. Some of you here are thinking you are a messiah or something...

not you ofcourse BanCricfan... some of you.. lol

i don't think anyone here would share my interest in bach. personally, i am yet to find anything that lifted me spiritually higher than most of bach's compositions.

here is a taste -
