:lol: HAHAHAHA that last bit cracked me up. All those names ending with "ul" are islamic. Its pretty much got to do with religion. Nothing more. And you're right - those names aren't what they're usually called outside of the cricketing world.

LOL no worries buddy. I guess it's a trait we carry along with a few Pakistani players as well. But our players have nicknames. Habibul's is Sumon, Shakibul is Shakib, Hasibul, one you happened to have missed, is Shanto. Ashraful is apparently called "Matin".

if we cut "UL" out from names, i dunno about others. but few players name would be really funny like
"Ashraful - ul = Ashra"
"Ariful - ul = Ari"
"Manjarul - ul = Manjar"
"Raisul - ul = Rais"
"Bulbul -ul = Bulb">>>Classic One. Hahahahaha, Can't Help But Laugh.

Bro after watching those last names i am kinda surprised that you guys have so many different last for one family. Like Hussain, Rahman, Chowdhury, Khan, Akhter, Ahmed, Haque, Nahar and Yasmin & Tajin are not any title of last name(i mean Bongsho) and i guess, Kabir & Anwar picked up from husband or father's name. There are at least 8 titles and All most all the "bongsho" in bangladesh. ROHOSSOMOY!!!:saint:

My maternal grandfather is a genius. The first three of his five daughters have first names not ending in 'a'. The fact that these names are the same does help a little bit.

What does the suffix "ul" mean ? Ashraful seems to be only one among the players listed who has "ul" in the last name.

What does the suffix "ul" mean ? Ashraful seems to be only one among the players listed who has "ul" in the last name.

not being an arabic whiz by any means, i'll still try to answer the question.

'ul' is not really a suffix, per se. its not supposed to be. ul simply means 'of' in the arabic language - which not being spoken or understood by your average illeterate bengali muslim means we have names with no (or absurd) meanings. or even un-islamic meanings.

however, the preposition (?) ul actually is more aptly referred to as just 'u' + a letter which is acrobatically attached to the next word. for example, one doesn't think of razzak's name fitting this mould, but it does. his name is abdur razzak which is equivalent to abdul razzak, only that instead of 'ul' (as in the pakistani pace all rounder) 'ur' is more correct, from a gramatical context in the arabic language.

both names have the same meaning i.e servant of the Provider.

abd = servant (or slave)
ul = of
ar-Razzak = the Provider (one of Allah's 99 names or attributes)

and thus combining them you get "abd ul ar-Razzak" or more pleasant sounding abd ur razzak.

so the meanings of BD players' names as far as I can understand is this:

ashraful (ashraf = noble, thus 'noble of' which actually makes no sense, hence he is one of the few with ul at the end of his last name).

nazmul hossain (najm or nazm = star, hossain = imam hossain thus 'star of hossain' which literally makes sense but practically not)

habibul bashar (habib = friend, thus 'friend of bashar' don't know what bashar means)

enamul haque (enam = gift, haque or haq as in inzy = truth, thus 'gift of truth')

manjural, sajjadul, raisul i don't know what those mean, and i don't think manjarul is an arabic name to begin with.

since we bengalis don't speak arabic, often our names have no real meaning except to distinuish us a muslims because we have 2 or 3 arabic names which our parents liked strung together in a sequence.

e.g my name is Asaad Wahid or better represented as As'ad Wahid because most people assume Asaad = Asad = lion. it does not.

Asaad = happy (not Asad, which = lion)
al-Wahid = the Unique (another of Allah's attributes)

which acutally makes my name rather blasphemous because one cannot assume the name of God. it must servant of God. so my name, had I been correctly named or born into an arab family, would be As'ad Abdul-Wahid.

hope this helps, Tintin.:D

habibul bashar (habib = friend, thus 'friend of bashar' don't know what bashar means)

bashar = human/people/mankind

habibul bashar = friend of people

He justifies his name, as he is very friendly, always smiling :)

I agree they should remove the 'ut' ... they sound like a little bit tul-tul but not enough 'tul-tul' . They should remove 'ul' and add an 'a' at the end instead.

Like:

'sakibul' - 'ul' + 'a' = sakiba
aminul - 'ul' + 'a' = amina
raisul 'ul' + 'a' = raisa
mahbubul 'ul' + 'a' = mahbuba
ariful 'ul' + 'a' = arifa
