Sheikh Sau'd Ibraheem Shuraim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saud_Al-Shuraim), and Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdul_Rahman_Al-Sudais)are two of the imams of the Grand Mosque, Masjdul Haraam.

People around the world love their recitation. In this thread, I have first introduced the recitation of Sheikh Shuraim, and then the recitation of Sheikh Al-Sudais. After you listen to their recitation, choose your favorite of these two great recitor of the Holy Quran:

Recitations of Sheikh Shuraim

Some comments about the recitation of Sheikh Sau’ud Shuraim from YouTube:

“Sheikh Saud Shuraim is the best of the best of the best. The calmness, tranquility and serenity in his voice is matchless. The way he increases the tone in verse # 22, brings goose bumps and tears. Allah U Akbar !!!”

“Believe me! Whenever I listen to the recitation of Sheikh Shuraim, my eys fill with tears automatically.” Same happens to me when I listen to Sheikh Sou’ud Shuraim’s recitation, even though I don’t understand the meaning. His recitation is very deep and profound, which sub-consciously creates some sort of throbbing in the heart of careful listener.

“Quran has got its power. It drove tears down the cheeks of King Najjashi and his crew when they were non-Muslim. The question is Why it is not happening to us (Muslims) today? We need to think, don’t we?
May Allah show the right path and shower the guidance for those who are watching videos like this and reward the ones who provide this material.”

“Very moving recitation.”

“This is such a beautiful video. I am not a muslim but to see this man be so emotional over reciting these words shows what Islam means to him. Obviously its not a religion of hatred if it can bring a man to tears so easily”

Recitations of Sheikh Al-Sudais

My Vote

Actually it is a very tough choice. Both of their recitation is very beautiful and moving. However, my vote goes for Sheikh Shuraim, whom I regard the best recitor of all time.

Shardul Bhai thanks for sharing, comparing these two is tough as they both have very different style. But I have heard better actually. Its if I hear someone when in action rather in a media gives a real picture. Definitely seating and reading is one thing, while leading a big group as an imam another.

This is an interview with Sau’d Shuraim published in a Qatari newspaper "Al Watan”. So today our guest is Sheikh Saud bin Ibrahim al Shuraim. He is imam and khateeb of masjid al haram,a very prominent personality of the Islamic world, a dignified researcher in fiqh, a judge and a poet. He has many trips in many countries, and he is a good writer, has written many books on aqeedah and stuff. well the recitation of Quran Kareem in his melodious voice is very famous and there may not be any Muslim home where he is not listen to...so lets start ...1st

Q:what were your feelings when you were made the imam of the Haram al Makky?

SS: My acceptance as an imam of Haram was not something that was surprise and happened at once rather it was a long process. It took much time...and before being appointed as an imam, I used to dream of being so and indeed it is a great blessing of Allah (SWT) to be an imam of Haram .I ask Him to guide me on the path of gratefulness.

Q: You give khutbah in Haram,so how do you compose it and how do you deliever?

SS: There is no particular way for it, moreover the khutbahs are often delievered according to the circumstances/current affairs...and for me, it is just once in a month. When I have to give khutbah, it doesn’t mean that I have such a long time to compose it because I don’t know the topic unless the imam before me has given his khutbah as the khutbah is related to the previous one. Moreover it is necessary to avoid such a situation that I may repeat the previous topics. I remember what Abdul Malik bin Marwan said, "the manabir (probably giving khotab) has made me old. Imagine that about a person who was a caliph and had excellent oratory skills! So what about a person who is much more less efficient? The matter needs assistance from Allah (swt).

Q: it is seen that Dr. Saud does not deliver much public lectures. What’s the reason? Would you please explain?

SS : Yes you are right and this is because I am too busy and I don’t leave Makkah due to imamah and I consider my Friday khutbah as a public lecture. As far as my lectures out of the K.S.A are concerned, they are much more in number than the lectures in the KSA. And I give religious sermons at masjid al haram three days in a week after fajr salah from the books(mentioned in the arabic text)

Q: Were you influenced by some particular qari (reciter) or khateeb? What do you think when you listen to the reciters who copy you?

SS: No, I am not influenced by some particular khateeb, but sometimes I like some of the khutab by some khateebs. And as for reciters, I am not influenced by some particular reciter, but I have no objection on the ones who copy me. However, think one should not follow/copy some reciter, instead one should make ones own way of reciting.

Q: Memorization of Quran and its recitation have a great impact on the khotab. So when did you complete your hifz and to whom you are indebted to in this regard?

SS: I completed my hifz in the last years of secondary school and it was due to my struggle after the grace of Allah. After hifz I even did the revision myself...didn’t acquire assistance from the shuyookh except in the normal classes at university. So I thank to Allah (swt).

Q: Whats the role of Dr.Saud's wife in his academic and dawawi success?

SS: Before I say something about my wife, I can’t forget my mothers love and mercy for me in my childhood and youth as well, since she raised me in orphanage in childhood. Her love is a tonic for me. May Allah shower His mercy upon her as she did with me when I was a child. And as for my wife, she has proven herself to be a best companion for me in happiness and sorrow. She is there when I need her, cheers me up and tries her best to lighten my sorrows. May Allah include this in her good deeds.

It is Ramadan.....so why not listen to the recitations of the two of the best qaaris of the world. Here are my some of my pick:

Part of Surah Al Ahzab-recited by Sheikh Shuraim

Khatme Quran Dua (with English Translation) by Sheikh Sudais. I specially recommend all bhais and apas to watch dua...we don't understand how beautiful these dua's are because we don't know Arabic. Now follow the dua with the English translation, it will touch your heart for sure.

AF bhai:

I am also familiar with this type of Qaari recitation of Quran. This type of recitation will win you prizes in Quran recitation competition. I made Umrah when I was a 7 years old and since then I became such a big fan of Sheikh Sudais and Shuraim that despite trying his best, my hujur failed to teach me recite Quran like that of the hujur of your video!

I followed Sheikh Shuraim since my first umrah and after practicing for years, have developed a voice which resembles Sheikh Suraim to certain extent.

Here is a video of recitation:

Everyone have their preferences. Both are great. Can bring tears any time on the listeners. In the early 80's we had a the blessings of a Qari in our BACHS, Shamoli mosque. People would run to the mosque just to hear his voice. I don't think people left Tarawhi without soaked eyes. And these folks didn't understand Arabic. The next year he was snatched by some saudi sheikh. May Allah have mercy on him. I am sure he is better of there. Voice, rythm, speed till today I could not find on any Hafiz.

Between the two Shaikh, I have some suras that I like to hear from Shaikh Shuraim and then some suras from Shaikh AbdulRahman. AbdulRahman's dua after finishing the Quran is amazing 40+ minutes long. Almost the entire time, the crowd is heard crying in the back ground.

This is pure cheating TE bhai. I detected it without listening the whole Surah!

I have been following the recitation of Dr. Saud Shuraim since 1995. I have all his Taraweeh videos (10 years), Tahajjud prayers (7 years), and lot of Fazr salat videos in my hard drive. Also has the audios of Saud Shuraim.

In this youtube video, a early 90's recording of Sheikh Shuraim has been used as the background audio while the lad just synchronized his lip. In the early 90s, Sheikh Shuraim was a young imam and at that time his voice reflected his youth too. He used to recite fast, and pitch of his voice used to be high. Bit with age, the his voice became increasingly calm and collected, the pitch decreased and his recitations now emantes a greater air of tranquility, serenity and seriousness. You can download videos of Sheikh Shuraim's early 90's taraweeh videos and early 2000 taraweeh videos from aswat-alislam,net and you will be able to tell the difference. Also listen Sheikh Shuraim's audio cassetts that are sold commercially you will understand that this fella just cheated. That recording simply resembles full-fledged commercial recording.

To me, Sheikh Suad Shuraim and Sheikh Abdur Rahman As Sudais make the best duet in this world when it comes to reciting the words of Allah. It is the emotional recitation of Saud Shuraim that instilled my heart with the thought "Oh Allah! Ami kothay achi" and subsequently truly brought me in the path of Allah. Allah has gifted them with voices that are evergreen, they never become old. This world is incomplete without them. I consider myself truly lucky that I was born at a time when I have been blessed to listen to such beautiful voices. May Allah bless this two great imam.

Some of the most thought-provoking verses of Sura Naziat are:

[79:39] And who chooses the life of this world,
[79:40] The Fire of Hell shall surely be his home.
[79:41] But as for him who fears to stand before his Lord, and restrains his soul from evil desires,
[79:42] The Garden shall surely be his home.

Allah has made it clear who will be the inhabitants of garden and who will be the inhabitants of fire. It is a choice that we have to make-Dunya or Akhirah. And`heard many recitations of Sheikh Shuraim when his eyes filled with tears when he came across this four verses of the Sura An-Naziat.

just my personal preference, that one seemed to plain to me a bit devoid of emotion. not at all suggesting the sheikh is not reciting with emotion, but just that it sounds like he's just reading the mushaf.

i guess i'm just more a fan of flamboyance when it comes to things, be it ashraful's batting or quranic tilawaah. :D
