Maybe we should use Skypecast for the tests maybe. Basically you just log in to your Skype account, and make your own Skypecast where you can invite people to join in to the cast, so during the test match we can have maybe Miraz bhai or someone doing the commentary or just put the mic on the sound of the PC or TV, and we can have all the members join in and listen to the Skypecast, that would be so much better than these match threads, and everyone else can join in to the conversations, plus it's all free!
Visit the website to find out: https://skypecasts.skype.com/skypecasts/home

As expected. More humiliation on the way. As long as we can stick around over a session I would not complain. In SL, Sharif saved us from that humiliation of getting allout in a session. That was a SL pitch.

(Hopefully we would not be the first and only test team in that list)

Has the team been announced yet? The look of the pitch, and reports about it tells me that we will go with three seamers. Sajid is in line for a debut. Batting wise, its pretty clear that Tamim will make his debut with HaBa, Ash, SN, Aftab filling the top six positions. Fight for one remaining spot will be fought over by Junaid, Rajin, Sakib & Reza. If Sajid is not picked, I think Reza is a sure shot to provide some seaming alternatives to go with his batting. That is a safety first approach and after the devastation of the 3rd ODI, won't be surprised at all if that is the case.

Bangladesh usually do well where there is no expectation. I get a feeling Bangladesh may pleasantly surprise many people in this test match. I expect some fight from the tigers. I hope they have the balls to comeback strong after such a shameless performance in the third odi.

If the practice wickets offered any hints the pitch might aid the seam bowlers a little more than Hamilton, Auckland, Napier and Queenstown. The Bangladeshi batsmen concentrated on getting the balance between stroke-playing and leaving the balls and with the Mashrafe Mortaza and Sajedul Islam in particular swinging the ball both ways and the one-day habits popping out of the blue every now and then, the task wasn’t easy.

“Today it was more a case of getting used to the wicket and playing out the deliveries. The ball tends to stop a little and doesn’t come on to the bat at pace. Playing in the V is probably a better option on this wicket,” said Shahriar Nafees Ahmed, one of the three players to have flown in as reinforcement for the Test side.

The tourists would surely be facing a barrage of short-pitched deliveries also and Habibul Bashar, with a reputation to uphold as an accomplished player of the short ball, knows that all too well.

“You can’t help it if they keep bowling short. You smack it if you can or you leave it alone, that’s my philosophy. But I guess the balls pitched up are more difficult to face than the short ones,” said Bashar.

“My New Year’s resolution revolves around seeing the team better its Test record and become more competitive in this form of the game. It’s fair to admit that we haven’t improved as expected in Tests in the last eight years,” said captain Mohammad Ashraful. Four draws and a solitary win in 49 appearances is reason enough for Ashraful’s anxiety to get a move on.

my feelings...though this pitch has more demons than we've ever faced.

good thing is, the law of averages. ash has lost 3 straight tosses, and there is only a 6% chance of losing 4 straight...so hopefully he wins, and we put kiwis into bat.

best chance of prolonging the match and easing pressure from our side.

Dhakablues
January 2, 2008, 02:16 PM
Prolong match = Match >4 days;
Prolong match = Javed Omar;
1st Test - Javed Omar = Match - 1 day
(Match - 1 day )- 11 * ( Batsman form) = Match 2.5 days

Got the equation?

Well the problem is when he goes out to toss in the first test match, there is 50 percent chance of losing that particular toss. :-p

Spitfire_x86
January 2, 2008, 02:58 PM
Prolong match = Match >4 days;
Prolong match = Javed Omar;
1st Test - Javed Omar = Match - 1 day
(Match - 1 day )- 11 * ( Batsman form) = Match 2.5 days

Got the equation?
According to your logic, with JO in the team we bat for nearly 90 more overs. Assuming JO faces 50% of those extra delivers, he surely always faces 270 deliveries more in every test compared to other openers.

Now find out how often he lasted 270 deliveries more than the other openers.

Javed, the grafter, was known for his gritty defense and occupying the crease, in fact that was his label.. "test cricketer". I am not a fan of Javed and earnestly hoped that we have found the opening pair with another better opener with Nafees. If there was one thing that Javed gave us,, it was the defence, prolonging the match and delaying the invevitable. He did carry the bat through the innings couple of times, first I think was during his Zimbabwe tour. His other job, to take the shine off the new ball, was perfomred not so terribly either. In our fragile top order, he was the one who remained the stable one even during the Lords matches where he won the man of the series award.

Nevertheless, its not like Javed was the savior for this tour. What was intended was the fact that we opted for two debutant openers than slowly blending experience in Test cricket. Thats the equation I am not understanding very well and fear that that strategy may expedite our innings defeats. Dont mind the youth if it is an Ashraful/Nannu.. lets see how the debutant openers handle the NZ attack. I will still be paying full price to watch the games despite all odds against a match beyond the 3rd day..I know I am not the only one

forget win, draw.. or score big.. Thats out of the picture. Just some good fielding... no dropping catches.. some good bowling attack. For the Batting part.. I expect nothing from these 11.. except, Ash, Tamim, and Aftab. If those three can maintain their good form.. I'll be happy.

Forget batting and hope for decent bowling? You're out of your mind. Our bowling is even more pathetic than our batting. I say we look to survive 4 days and restrict the opposition to less than 500 every innings.

valoi technique. NZ er 11 joner birudhdhe amader 12 jon player. hope NZ will not realize that. so aftab will bat twice. first time as a hard hitter, 2nd time as a test batsman like javed's proxy. thanks mahfiz raju for ur future vision.

I just wonder about JO lovers claim that he is a test batsman. At best he is a golli cricketer. It has been statistically proven that he is not a test batsman at all. But reading at the newspapers in BD and the posting of some JO fan here I have the feeling that he was the messiah of our cricket.

Sadly, the Laws of Probability does not work out like that. It is true that winning 4 tosses in a row has a probability of 6.25%. However, that is with uncertainty. Here we already have knowledge [ i.e. we are certain ] of the first 3 events.

Hence, the probability of the fourth or the next is still 50%.

Just use our players average ( apprx 25) and a strike rate of 50%, you can calculate how long the match is going to last.. which is about a day. NZ batting for day and a half and in the 2nd innings we do our best,, there.. you have a 4 day match already. NZ will be doing some batting practice before their England party..The question is,, can the players atleast perform to their average with a less strike rate. The good thing is,, Jamie is going to try and so will the new players to change their fortune,, who knows, we might be surprised to find that we are still playing the 4th day tea, its possible. Who wouldve beleived beforehand that we were in a position to win against Australia/Pakistan? Tigers are their best when they are cornered... I personally feel, we are at that position in the tour.

What? Why would you want that when you can have this?

Tamim should open with shahriar nafees, and both of them need to be their for the 2 test matches. Rajin Saleh should be picked ahead of every batsman in the bangladesh line up, cause he is the only genuine batsman who can stay on the crease for a long period of time. Haba might just be another failure, but he deserves another chance. I really feel bad for Haba. Ashrafool is auto. Sakib should be picked for his allround abilites, even though he doesn't know how to deal with the moving ball, well no body knows in our batting line up. Mushfiq is auto, going through a rough time, I know. Abdur Razzak is still better then enamul, and Mashrafee, sahadat, Sajidul a must have luxury for us.

I agree with Shakir bhai, but would pick enamul ahead of shakib.

Shakib's great with the bat, but I suspect Enamul is even a better test bowler than razzak and they should both be in the starting XI. We keep talking about the batting abilities of guys like mushfiq and Shakib, but batters are only useful if they score runs, shakib isn't right now, so I think we should go with our strengths and pick a 2nd spinner (enamul)...

abu2abu is right, "expansive drives" are the reason why Sub continent batsman fail In New zealand, all they end up doing is edging it to the wicket kepper or slips, it may be fine in the subcontinent, not here.

Why would you like to put two spinners in a gewwn kiwi pitch?? specially our spinners failed to spin the ball in ODI, why not go for Farhad reza instead......!!!

i thnk we shud give enamul a chance here.......kiwis must be invented techniques to play Razzaq....so we shud try something new here......and enamul is waiting a long time for comeback.....

my team

S Nafees
T Iqbal
H Basher
M Ash
Aftab A
Mush R
F Reza

so we hav 7 batsman, 3 genuine seamers, 1 spinners, 1 supporting medium fast bowlers..ash can try his leg spin.

Hmm, you make a good point. perhaps reza should play as the allrounder and enamul should replace razzak. But I think its unlikely that the management will drop razzak. I too think enamul would be a better pick than razzak and I do like your XI ...

rajin can bowl his offspin!

Has any1 else noticed how ash is now bowling medium pace in NZ? This may be good coaching by Siddons. Ash seems to always want to bowl (as in the T20 WC where he bowled his own dubious leg breaks ahead of alok kapali) and maybe the coach has taught him that in NZ conditions medium pace would be a better bet...

Quite an exciting playing eleven I must say. It has the best Bangladesh has to offer at this moment I believe. But at the same time, it can be quite risky since we have so many strokemakers in the team. Other than Nafees, I don't see any other grafters in the team which can be a concern. But I love the team. Most of the batsmen in this team has the technique to play in the New Zealand condition.

Mahmood

If we had Pilot and Rafiq, then this would be the the best Bangladesh has to offer. But given the retard team selection from the new selectors, this is the best playing combination, agreed.

selecting aftab is really a good decision...but is it a wise decision to select 3 attacking batsmen in da playing XI?
e.g tamim,bashar,aftab......maybe rajin could have come into da team in place of aftab to offer more stabilty...on the other hand rajin is not so good against swing bowling like aftab...lets see what happens

January 3, 2008, 09:17 AM
Well I was talking about batting actually. Bowlingwise, we need Rasel to be out there to have the best eleven. Actually I love the selection of Shahriar Nafees in the middle order at number 5. I always felt like he is a better fit there since he plays spin quite well and has the temperament and smart to play with the tailenders.

Tamim is said to have curved his shots these days and Siddons might have noticed that too. Perhaps he could become a test level batsman provided he proves that now. Shakib despite being a run maching in NCL could not show the same form on NZ pitches. Siddon's might have considered this before opting him out of the team for now. The fifth bowler might be Ashraful as a leggie or Aftab as a filler medium pacer.

I also agree that Sakib is a better player, but he is not in form in NZ or not comfortable with pace there. Look at his scores in ODIs. There were no choice to let him sit and rethink his strategy!

Wish the team the best. I would be looking forward to see how Aftab, Mushi utilize their lifelines. Come on do a justice to your talents.

I don't expect something big from the three debudants, HB (off form), SN (inconsistant). Anything big from them would be positive for the team.

Fielding must be sharp. No matter how bad we bat or bowl, this is an area that we can beat the NZs if we want to. Mushi can't give any bye 4's over his head. Stand a bit behind if necessary. The bowlers must bowl in correct line and length. No other alternatives. That is how one can create chances of getting a wicket. We are yet to trouble 'How'. He should be Target #1 for BD.

WE NEED TO BOWL FIRST ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. Convince Vittori that his batsmen will not get proper batting practice if he choses to bowl first. And challenge him to show some balls like pointing did in cardiff(in case u don't remember that day every one said to bowl first in that pitch but pointing took batting thinking his team needs more batting practice) since he wants to follow him so much.

As long as we survive the first session I am okay. It takes very little to please me in the condition BD team is. The batting line up is more accustomed for a shorter version of the game.

Except for the first test for each country, very few teams introduced two opening debudant. (And ofcourse SA starting to play and after the WWars). My fingers are crossed. My fear is ekbar morok lagley thekabey kay?

All the best to the BD young team for the first Test.
May Allah smile upon you, give you fortitude to perform well and make your country proud of you.
May each batsman score well and hope that even if you fail, your fans do not criticize you too much. Critics will say that this was a young inexperienced group of lads playing against matured, experienced men.
