</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>WELLINGTON: The New Zealand capital is the last destination for the Bangladesh team before they wind up their 5-week tour and this is also the place where they will have the final chance of salvaging something concrete. Down 0-1 in the two-match series the Tigers arrived here today (Wednesday) afternoon for the final Test at Basin Reserve starting Saturday.

Usually Wellington’s name is associated with its reputation as New Zealand’s ‘Windy City’ and for about four months a year the westerly ‘roaring forties’ winds whip through the Cook Straight between the bottom of the North Island and the top of the South Island and produces blistery weathers that can turn into gale force winds. The Bangladesh team however found Wellington to be a sunny and generous 16 degrees and the wind never threatened to go beyond pleasant.

Wellington is also the most southern capital in the world holding an urban population of 379,000 and as the team bus zigzagged across the edges of the Wellington Harbour into the sprawling city centre towards the Tigers’ hotel the scenes were more akin to a Riviera with posh apartments and villas jutting out of the mountains and overlooking the blue waters of the Pacific. There’s one thing to remember here, the Harbour lies along an active geological fault which is prominent in its straight western coast. The land to the west of this abruptly rises and that’s why many of Wellington's suburbs sit high above the centre of the city which is dominated by a mixture of modern high-rises and century old structures. This probably explains why Wellington is also the country’s capital of contemporary and historic art.

The Bangladesh team had a stopover in Christchurch on their way to Wellington from Dunedin and a very special guest was present at the airport just to meet them. Former New Zealand captain Graham Dowling came with his wife to say hello and spent some time with the players and officials and it signified the genuine affection the 70-year old carries for Bangladesh cricket. When Mohammad Ashraful was introduced to him Dowling said “I’ve heard about you. You smack the ball all around the park.” His wife meanwhile was surprised by the appearance of the Bangladesh skipper and exclaimed “you are far too young!”

In 2000 under the Chairmanship of Sir Clyde Walcott the ICC Cricket Committee appointed a sub-committee of Australia’s Bob Simpson, Zimbabwe’s Andy PyCroft of Zimbabwe and Nasim-Ul Ghani of Pakistan to visit Bangladesh and inspect the country’s cricketing infrastructure and then report if Bangladesh were ready for Test and international cricket. Simpson had to decline as he had other commitments at the time and Dowling took his place. It was only after Dowling and the others reported favourably that the ICC Executive Board decided to give Bangladesh Test status.

The Tigers spent the afternoon doing some recovery and fitness activities at the nearby beach before attending a homely reception arranged by the small but sprightly Bangladeshi community here. The children, most of whom are born here, may find Bangla alien compared to English but the passion for the country remains intact. Some brought scrapbooks with the players' photos and took autographs, others ran around with miniature bats and had them signed by their heroes. The ladies had spent hours preparing Bangladeshi delicacies for the team and every effort was made to make them literally feel at home.

Preparation for the second Test continues tomorrow with fitness sessions in the morning and then extended nets and fielding in two groups at the Basin well into the afternoon.

Wellington has a bigger field, so our batsmen won't be able to get away with edging short pitched deliveries like they did in the last match. That means they will be facing lot more short deliveries this time. The wind here will also make batting difficult.

That should be alarming for Habibul Bashar (if he got selected). If he doesnt change that impulsive tendency to pull short balls, he will fail miserably here. Aftab and Tamim also need to avoid those lofty shots. :waiting:

Here's an article on Prothom-Alo in which Siddons figured out some problems with our batsmen and bowlers.

He's saying around 5/6 batsmen have technique problem which induldes back lifts.

Read it here (http://www.prothom-alo.com/mcat.news.details.php?nid=Nzc0NDY=&mid=OA==), you will see the list.

However, Siddons is right. He will be the golden boy of bd cricket with lot of golden ducks.

I reckon JS knows a bit more cricket than you and me Murad. And I'm not ready to dismiss Mushfique just yet. He's still finding himself - the building blocks are there. His keeping _was_ better in Dunedin. Even after factoring in the fact he was getting consistent bounce unlike what he'd get off BD pitches.

sandpiper
January 9, 2008, 05:16 PM
Ok I am trying to translate it. :)
According to this report the problems of the batsmen are

1. Inability in their shot selection (which one to play and which one to leave)
2. Lack of comfort in short balls.
3. 5/6 guy have technical limitations. (some basic errors like "backlift" is also included)
4. Inability to hold the composure when the opposition bowlers continue to bowl in the right area.

The positive outcomes of Dunedin test are

1. Batting of the two openers. They left the ball wisely. I used to tell them from the beginning. They got bogged down in one-dayers. But it worked in test.

2. Bowling of Mashrafe Mortoza. He is somewhat prone to injury. But a good bowler.

3. Wicketkeeping of Mushfiqur Rahim.

Im illiterate so can someone post a small summary on the technique problems.

His keeping _was_ better in Dunedin. Even after factoring in the fact he was getting consistent bounce unlike what he'd get off BD pitches.

His keeping was okay in the 1st Test but was worse in the ODI matches.

But now his main problem is his batting. Do you remember when was the last time he made a good score? I'm not asking for 50 here. He played a lot of innings after that match against India in the WC. He's the worse player against fast bowling. He's okay against spin though.

He should play better in the upcoming series else he will get the axe and play for A-team or Academy team. He was given enough matches to get his forms back. Look at other players, who was discarded in the past. How many chances they got to prove their worth?

How do we expect him to come in at #7 when the score is 50 odd for 5 and smack a century, being the 18 or 19 year old that he is? That's not his job - it's the responsibility of some of the more experienced guys in the team to bring us out of trouble so that the younger ones can play what they love to call their "natural game".

Bring him up. Let him bat at #3. See how he puts Ashraful/Bashar/Aftab to shame.

Who knows,, Nafis Iqbal can come back. He was such a hype when he came onboard calling the English bowling ordinary after scoring the century against them at BKSP. If only he didnt get injured and exposed some serious flaws in his techniques, Tamim couldve opened with him. Couldve been the Waugh/Boon/Otieno brothers. Nafis always supported Tamim,, the former got too much tangled with family, injury, form that he couldnt get back to a squad that was moving too fast...all the best to him.

1855: The End of the Basin Lake

A canal running from the waterfront to the Basin Lake at the end of Kent Terrace was intended for barges to deliver goods to Newtown warehouses. Wellington's miniature Venice vanished, however, when the 1855 earthquake struck.
The earthquake had raised the lake and prisoners were sent to work to turn the land into a public park. The Basin Reserve soon became the home of Wellington cricket.

Interesting history about Basin Reserve (Wellington). It used to be a lake.

I just finished watching ball by ball 1st test of day 3 on TV. Lots of members here said in other threads the Bashar played horribly and cudn't even block. Well except for 2/3 balls I didnt see any problem w/ his blocking or playing shots until he got out. But definitely he is not his fluent self like he used to. I dont think he will be dropped for the 2nd test. Dont think JS gives a crap abt his 3000 milestone. He will be picked because no one can is better at the moment.

BTW, the team posted on the first page isn't the finalized team for this match, is it?

No, it's merely a probable team based on the team from the 1st test.

And I pray your wish comes true!

I don't think there'll be more than one change to the team (if any).

Can you imagine the ephoria if BD were to win a test against NZ (a decent test side) in NZ? It would really signal that the team have made progress.

fatullah was the best test performance put up by bangladesh to date!(after our debut test) no comments on the zimbabwe win as Australlia is much stronger than zimbabwe.

perhaps australlia underperformed because they were fatigued out and bangladesh's surprise attack from nafees, bashar, rafique... and home field, i doubt bangladesh will repeat fatullah or better in australlia when australlia is fully energized.

From Cricinfo
The pitch is likely to count against spinner Jeetan Patel bowling in tandem with Vettori, who at first glance said it looked a little more dead than usual. It's a flat surface, which, Bangladesh's coach Jamie Siddons said, his team was looking forward to playing on. "We'd love to have a bat on it. It's certainly not the threatened green seamer we expected to get all tour," Siddons said.
Siddons is expected to change his batting lineup after a miserable showing in Dunedin. Habibul Bashar was out to injudicious shots and Aftab Ahmed bagged a pair, so Rajin Saleh and allrounder Farhad Reza could replace them. The two openers, Tamim Iqbal and Junaid Siddique, are unlikely to be touched; they added a record opening stand in the second innings before the ten wickets fell for just 93 runs. Enamul Haque jnr, the slow left-arm spinner called up for the two-Test series, failed to impress in Dunedin and may make way for Abdur Razzak.

Possible changes for 2nd test. Aftab, Bashar and Enamul may be replaced by Rajin, Farhad and Razzak

it is a dead flat batting strip. Bangladesh wins toss bangladesh should bat(from cricinfo).

Gillespie ruled out of second Test

Mark Gillespie, the New Zealand fast bowler, has been ruled out of the second Test against Bangladesh after he aggravated the shoulder injury which forced him to miss the first Test while playing for Wellington against Auckland.

"He [Gillespie] is definitely out of the Test line-up," Durning told stuff.co.nz. "He bowled a complete spell the other day but yesterday he was three or four overs into a spell and all of sudden something happened again. We'll wait and see the results of the Tests before making another other decisions."

Gillespie did not take part in New Zealand's practice session at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Thursday. Fast bowlers Iain O'Brien and Michael Mason were the contenders to replace Gillespie though offspinner Jeetan Patel also had a chance depending on the nature of the pitch.

when someone gives you a link, go to that page and then you should see the sopcast player loaded in the webpage, if not, check the top with a yellow header and it should say something like "internet explorer has currently blocked the active x, click here to enable it" then just click the yellow header and it should be enable.

For those who are having problem with Sopcast, do the following. It might work.

If you have the Sopcast player up, but just a black screen with the player buffering, try this. Download the VLC player from the downloads (http://www.freefootballradio.com/download.html) page. Click on the "File" tab. Select "Open File". In the "Open" box type in or paste "http://localhost:8902/tv.asf". Click on "OK". The VLC media player should then start playing the game. You must also keep the Sopcast player running, just minimize it to get it off your screen. Or To use VLC, download VLC at http://www.videolan.org and install it , then start the Sopcast stream and let it buffer. Then open VLC, go to Open Network Stream, select HTTP option, and type in 127.0.0.1:8902 (if not working, try port 8912). You MUST leave Sopcast running; closing Sopcast closes the stream. If the stream gives sound in both VLC and Sopcast, mute the sound on Sopcast, or hit the refresh button so the Sopcast screen goes blank, but the VLC screen stays intact.

Thanks to Tonoy and Murad :)
Lets see whether I can fix it. I have just installed Avant Browser.

when someone gives you a link, go to that page and then you should see the sopcast player loaded in the webpage, if not, check the top with a yellow header and it should say something like "internet explorer has currently blocked the active x, click here to enable it" then just click the yellow header and it should be enable.

Obayed bhai and Sandipper, try it by enabling active-x.

or use Avant Browser instead Internet Explorer which will not ask you to enable anything...

Yeah, at first I didn't feel like updating from version 6. However, I like it now bc of better designs such as tabs, and so forth. It' not really slow, it just loads everything in a page altogether instead of bit by bit like Firefox, which may seem slow but really isnt.
