View Full Version : An interview with Mohammad Rafique, the legend of Bangladesh Cricket

I have just finished an interview with Mohammad Rafique in which he discussed about his retirement, fond memories with Bangladesh team, his thoughts about Bangladesh cricket, future plan and some untold stories which should be made public.

It was an excellent discussion and I am very much impressed to see the depth of his cricket knowledge and simplicity in explaining different things.

I will publish the interview only after his official retirement from Test cricket (after the second Test against South Africa).

This will be a simple token of respect to the greatest cricketer Bangladesh have produced till date.

A salute to the legend.

Great going, Miraz ... :)

Looking forward to the interview. That said, I hope you don't get to publish it before at least 12 more months from now. I think he has more test cricket left in him.

Rafiq had a plan to be a curator once i heard, is that right? (at least unfold this )

miraz bhai how did you get hold of him? i'm confused.
do the bc staff have the authority to communicate with the players or something?????:confused::confused:
HOW i just dont get it.

Miraz

I contacted him over telephone.

It's not the question of authority as a BC staff, it's more of a kind of personal connection/realtion than anything else.

Unless BCB takes some unprecedented steps, which is highly unlikely, Rafique is retiring from international cricket after the second Test.

Apologies to BC members.

First, Thank you Miraz bhai for your relentless effort.
Second, by any chance did you record that conversation? Only if you did:

after publishing the English version, if you could may be 1) type it up in Bangla or 2) send a copy of the transcript to any BC bangla specialists. Nasif, Arnab, Shafin, BD-Shardul all can type word for word the questions and answers. I am sure they wouldn't mind and would be honored. That would great to have in the archives (10 years from now). Bhasha Andolen'er month tai... Otherwise, no problem at all, English will be fine.

Thanks Tigers_eye bhai, I really feel honored. Being a student where vernacular was the medium of instruction till higher-secondary level as well as my love for Bangla has helped me to achieve that.

Anyway, if I were the interviewer, I would have interviewed him after the SA series and asked him to explain the current selection policy of BCB, if he don’t mind (like Atapattu of SL). Mohammad Rafique the whistle blower? We certainly need one; else I don’t see any other way to get rid of this current panel of selectors. ;)

Ah this explains why Miraz bhai posted a comment recently about rafique "always giving 100%", no doubt he'd just been chatting to him on the phone!

Rafique's a legend definitely, that's quite clear. But his mind has obviously not been on the game recently, if he had been he wouldn't have been left out of the NZ tour. In fact it seems onyl thoughts of retirement (and going out on a high) focused his mind enough...

Looking forward to the interview...

There is a time to complain and there is a time to ignore petty stuff and rise above those things.

I hope he doesn't say too much controversial stuff. He have done a lot for BD cricket, I want him to retire with his head high. This is the last image he is going to creaate to the fans. I would like him to see him as a person who can rise up high and ingore petty personal conflict / politics and make this moment more memorable for him as well as his fans. Even if he may be telling the truth, this is not the time to bring up dirty laundry to the public or even give an appearance as if he is a 'sore looser' and retiring with broken heart.

As a fan I want to acknowledge his contribution , salute and give him proper respect. I have a feeling there may be some controversial stuff in that interview. And that worries me.

Rafique is not going to play the ODIs? If he does, then I think it will be better to publish the article after the ODI series is over. Else I think he will be fined if they find out the article.

It will be better for him if you publish the article after he retires from both version of cricket. :)

Rafiq has already started to talk. Making my job easier. :)

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Bangladesh's most successful spinner Mohammad Rafique will quit international cricket after the second and final test against South Africa starting in Chittagong on Friday.
Rafique announced earlier this month he would retire from test cricket after the series against South Africa, which also includes three one-dayers.
"I have decided to quit the cricket as mark of protest against a group people in the Bangladesh Cricket Board, who do not like to see me in squads," Rafique told a news conference on Thursday.
"These officials who did not allow me to play test cricket for nearly three years, are now back in the board. So I have decided to quit," added the 37-year-old, who has played in 32 tests and 125 one-day internationals.
Bangladesh Cricket Board officials were not immediately available for comment.

For the sake of the team the last thing we needed before the start of the 2nd TEST is this kind of drama.... looks like my nightmare is comming to reality. Rafiq may be talking the truth, but then again he proved he is different and he is not deplomatic enough and that may explain his few fights/communication problems with management, coach and players in previous years.... this time looks like he is making more enenmy i.e. Siddon as an example.

.... I respect him as a player... I recognize his contribution.... but I am saddened by what is happening now. I still believe this is not the time to go as a sore looser....and this is not the way to fight injustice done to him (if he really feels that way) .... he should go with his head high.

btw personally I don't blame the slectors for not choosing Rafiq for NZ tour. I would have done the same for reasons that were discussed here at that time. In this kind of Natok, there will be no winner, every body will be the looser.

The report says that while meeting the press, the Captain and coach were accompanied by Rafiq. After the coach's speech, Ash introduced Rafiq with great praises. That made him wipe his eyes before taking the microphone. Emotion ends here.

Fireball after fireball, one spins left the next one to the right and then the change up. right down the middle. BCB admin and Selectors kind a forced him to take the retirement decision. Funny where these reporter learn how to report. There is no direct quote but he (reporter) himself says things as if Rafique is saying. They need to go through a rigorous APA or MLA course.

Who will listen to him later? then you would say he should have said this when it mattered...

so whts the big deal? when did our selector chose the best crickets from NCL anywayz? once in a while, when they needs to replace some senior players. Other than that have we ever see em picking up random ppl just because they performed well in tht? At the end of the day they still picks up the one tht is known as "The Pool Player".. like mashrafee, ashraful, or nafis. As far as I remember, Nafis had a hard time in our last NCL. He is in the squad because of his past experience.. NOW, based on tht logic.. how dare they omit rafiq from the group, who has been one of the most experienced, furthermore, THE MOST REASONABLE AND CONSISTENT Bangladeshi blower through out past 4 years!

The big deal has nothing to do with performance. No one doubts the fact that he's one of the better cricketers that we've produced.

Constantly staying away from NCL games as if they weren't important especially when the board has been trying to improve its quality calls for some sort of disciplinary action, IMO. If that's the case, then I have no problem with anyone being left out for a series.

i know shamokal often exaggerate things, but this is really sad. i feel like there's been great injustice done here to a legendary player:sick:. what is wrong with those bcb guys. i have a lot more to say about this issue but i wont go too far as it may not be true to that extent. Although i dont think rafique will lie or shamokal will make up this much rubbish:-|

Did Rafiq mention specific names he was targetting in your interview? Or did he said the same thing that was published on the media today?

If names are spelled out that would be really really hot. BC could think about selling the interview to the media at high price!! Anyway, I want to hear some names. :-D:D

If you're planning on publishing the interview after his retirement and not a day ahead of that no matter what, why give away tiny bits and pieces now? lol.

Rafique to dubaitese.. amake bollo retirement er aage na publish korte aar ekhon nije sob kotha bole dichche ... :(

But those were part of the story... :)

Let's tell the untold story, all the culprits should get caught who destroyed BD cricket in eight years they destroyed our development. I feel rebelious myself, I feel like I should reveal all office craps going now...Rafique giving me new hope...hehe
but Rafique will join IPL ...and if I do that I will join unemployment

The big deal has nothing to do with performance. No one doubts the fact that he's one of the better cricketers that we've produced.

Constantly staying away from NCL games as if they weren't important especially when the board has been trying to improve its quality calls for some sort of disciplinary action, IMO. If that's the case, then I have no problem with anyone being left out for a series.

According to Rafiq, board told him right before the NZ tour tht he is not expected to be in the cricket team. This year NCL took place right before tht tour. Therefore, Rafiq didn't join them. R past years it wasn't mandatory, and national team might have had their tour going on. How can you blame Rafiq for this?

AsifTheManRahman
February 28, 2008, 06:22 PM
That's exactly my point. You're supposed to play in the NCL irrespective of whether you make it to the team or not. You can't choose to do as you please. It doesn't reflect well on your professionalism.

I'm not accusing him of anything yet. I said that "if" that was the case, I wouldn't have a problem with him getting dropped. I'll wait for reports from more authentic sources to come out before judging anyone.

I understand that some members are not happy to wait, but I have to wait till tomorrow to publish the interview.

Cricinfo is also going to publish the interview and they have to wait till tomorrow for same reason.

We are amateurs here, but I have to do some stuffs maintaining professional norms, otherwise it will be difficult for me to do similar things (like interview of national players) in future.

I do apologise for your inconvenience, but I had no options left.

Thanks for your understanding.

Nothing! trust me, simply nothing!!

Giving Bangladesh cricket , and also BanglaCricket, a better coverage is much more important to me than money.

I haven't asked for any money, I am happy that they have published the interview which was important for Bangladesh cricket and at the end of the interview BanglaCricket is mentioned. That's enough inspiration for me. :)

They have just edited few questions, omitted the intro and kept the main part of the interview intact.
