I am wondering if BCB will allow Dhaka clubs to hire ICL players like Imran Farhat, Taufiq Umar, Abdul Razzaq, Mushtaq Ahmed, Mohammad Sami, etc. Since those guys practically murdered their international and FC careers, they should be available to play in Dhaka premier league. Dhaka premier league is not recognized as a list-A league, BCCI should not have any objection those players playing here.

From Daily Star -
Although the big guns will be without the top stars -- on national duty in the ongoing home series against South Africa -- the youth team's return from Malaysia last night after the Under-19 Cricket World Cup will somewhat help the teams fill in a few gaps.

Victoria have signed Pakistani's Jaffar Qureshi, a tested all-rounder in Dhaka, while Kalabagan have a solid batsman in Shahbaz Butt, also from Pakistan.

Last year's runners-ups Mohammedan, who lost all their matches in the T20 competition despite winning the inaugural trophy last season, have roped in Delhi off-spinner Ajit Chandela. The Indian player is expected to take the field against debutants BKSP at the Fatullah Stadium.

BKSP, who shocked Mohammedan in the T20 opener, will not take any foreign cricketer.

Other foreign cricketers likely to play the first round are Hong Kong national team's Pakistani-born left-arm spinner Monir Ahmed (Old DOHS), Rashed Hanif (Partex) and Fahadullah (Sonargaon).

Old DOHS has brought an SLA from Hong Kong when we have an overflowing supply of SLAs at home !!!

Hong Kong player plays in Bangladesh Premier League

Hong Kong Cricket Association (http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/hongkong/content/story/339841.html)

Moner Ahmed has accepted an offer from OLD D.O.H.S. Sports Club to play in the Bangladesh Premier League 50 over competition. Moner Ahmed impressed Khalid Mahmood, former Bangladesh Test Captain and Coach of the Bangladesh National Academy, who visited HK earlier this year, by smashing 50 runs and taking 3-32 in his 10 overs in the 1st ODI game. He was the stand out performer from the Hong Kong Team.

This was not the first time Moner has impressed against a Bangladesh Team, in the Hong Kong International Sixes Moner bowled a tight over against them and gave only two runs for one wicket.

Moner Ahmed plays for Little Sai Wan Cricket Club in HKCA Sunday League and has now completed his 4 years residency in HK to be considered for Selection for the Hong Kong National Team as a Deemed National.

"It is a great opportunity for me to play professional cricket," said an excited Moner, " I hope I can perform well and get more such chances."

"Moner is a great example for young HK cricketers, " added Sohail Murshed, Chairman of HKCA International Committee, "it shows that a good performance against a professional team will get you noticed. I hope more HK players will perform and get opportunities like this in the future."

Moner will be out of HK for two months and his first game for his club team is on March 1st 2008.

Abahani, Mohammedan get off to a fine start

http://www.bdnews24.com/details.php?id=42602&cid=26

Dhaka, March 1 (bdnews24.com) – Holders Abahani Limited, last year's runners-up Mohammedan Sporting Club and City Club got off to a fine start on the opening day of the Premier Division Cricket League Friday.

An unbeaten 66-run from skipper Tushar Imran powered Abahani to a comfortable six -wicket win over newcomers Surjo Torun at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium while an unbeaten 87 runs by Faisal Hossain Dickens helped Mohammedan beat Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) by 53 runs at Narayanganj Osmani Stadium.

City Club recorded a tense two-run win over Sonargaon Cricketers at the BKSP ground-2.

Abahani vs Surjo Torun

Put in to bat first, Surjo Torun fell in trouble losing opener Uttam Kumar for nought before opener Shakil Haider (60) along with middle orders Nizamuddin (29, Shamsur Rahman (29 and Nayeem Islam (27) repaired the damage.

But, the late order failed to carry on the success to be folded at 178 all out in 49.2 overs after losing the last four wickets for 21 runs in the face of some tight bowling from the Dhanmondi-based Abahani.

Arafat Sunny and Rezaul Karim took two wickets each for 33 and 45 respectively.

Abahahi, who reached the Premier League Twenty20 final, reached 180 for four with 7.4 overs to spare as opener Mahbubul Karim laid a solid foundation of 41.

Tushar Imran and Nadif Chowdhury remained unbeaten on 66 and 16 to steer the holds home.

Mohammedan vs BKSP

After being invited to bat first, Mohammedan, who lost all five Twenty20 matches, once again fell in trouble to be reduced to 42 for four in 14th overs.

Middle order batsmen Chandana (20) and Dickens (87 not out) and Suhrawardi Shuvo (35) rescued the Motijheel-based outfit to take their side to 203 for nine in 50 overs.

Moshiur Rahman led the attack with four for 52 while Mahmudul Talukdar and Latiful Khan grabbed two wickets each for 23 and 35 respectively.

In reply, BKSP, who upset Mohammedan in Twenty20 opener, managed 156 for seven in 50 overs despite a top order collapse.

Saimon Ahmed (47), Nazmul (31), Raihan Anas (18) and Mominul Haq (18) were remarkable scorers after Tapash Kumar Bhaisya rattled the top order taking three for 40.

City Club vs Sonargaon

Imran Ahmed struck first ton and Sumon Barua hammered an explosive fifty as City Club posted a fighting total of 244 for four in 50 overs after deciding to bat first.

Imran smashed 128 off 155 balls featuring nine fours and four sixes while Sumon played a 56-ball 67 that included seven fours and two sixes.

In reply, Sonargaon got off to a fine start with openers putting on 72 runs before Mehrab Hossain Opee fell on 32.

Opener Elias Sunny (64), Arman Hossain (37), Fahadullah (35) and Sharifullah (11) took their side to 193 in 42.4 overs before Fahadullah was the fifth batsman out.

Afterwards, Sonargaon needed 51 runs in 46 balls with five wickets in hand, but they finally saw two runs short of the target though Mostafizur Rahman (23 off 22 balls) and Saif Mahmud (13 off 12 balls) took Sonargaon to the close.

[বাংলা]হাবিবুলের ব্যাটে রান, সূর্যতরুণের প্রথম জয়

http://www.bdnews24.com/bangla/details.php?id=21850&cid=26

Well, it was a low scoring match. Let see how those two do when Tarun will have to make a big score.

Anyway, I admit that I have underestimated Bashar and Mashud's survival instincts. Those two now know very well that their income sources other than domestic leagues are drying up, so they should give their best to stay alive at this level.

From Bdnews24:

Imrul, Faisal guide Mohammedan home

Dhaka, Feb 5 (bdnews24.com) -Two fifties from Imrul Kayes and Faisal Hossain Dickens powered Mohammedan Sporting Club to a six-wicket win over Partex Sporting Club in the Premier Division Cricket League Wednesday.

Last year's runners-up raced to 170 for four in 30 overs in reply to Partex's 168 for seven in 33-over-a-side affair at Narayanganj Osmani Stadium.

Put in to bat first, Partex were reduced to 12 for three in 5.3 overs and never recovered the damage though Tariq Ahmed (30) and Pakistan Rashed Hanif (68) put on 83 runs for the fourth wicket before both batsmen were run out.

Ariful Islam played 28-ball 29 as the Partex went beyond 150-mark.

In reply, Mohammedan also fell in trouble losing opener Rashedul Haq (1) and one-down Nadimuddin (10), but Imrul Kayes along with Roqibul Hasan tried to repair the damage contributing 38 runs before the latter was out for 16.

But, Imrul and Faisal remained unbeaten to put on 107 for the fifth wicket to steer Mohammedan home with three overs to spare.

Imrul hammered 66 off 81 balls that included six boundaries while Faisal played run-a-ball 51 with the help of four fours and two sixes.

The second match between Abahani Limited and Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan was abandoned and they shared one point each.

Difference between our bowlers in the league and the intl bowlers is very big.

full report:

Mehrab Hossain guided Old DOHS to a six-wicket win over much-fancied Victoria Sporting Club in the Premier League at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium yesterday.

Chasing 163 for their first win, Old DOHS stumbled early on but skipper Mehrab took up the mantle and his unbeaten 85 fashioned the victory in 33.5 overs. Victoria were earlier bowled out for 162 runs in 42.4 overs.

In the other matches, Bangladesh Biman registered a 14-run victory over Young Pegasus at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium while Kalabagan beat Sonargaon by 23 runs in Savar.

Meanwhile in Fatullah and Dhanmondi, matches had to be curtailed due to thick fog causing low light for play to begin on time.

VICTORIA -OLD DOHS
Pacemen Rashedur Rahman and Kamrul Islam justified Mehrab's decision to put the opposition into bat, as the two reduced Victoria to 4-38 in the 14th over.

Paceman Kamrul removed Gazi Salahuddin, Mohammad Salim and skipper Ehsanul Haque cheaply to return with figures of three for 22.

Later, it was the Mahbub Alam's off-spin that pegged back Victoria. He took two wickets, including the vital one of Farhad Hossain who was dangerously poised on 49 that included six boundaries. DOHS's foreign recruit Monir Ahmed also grabbed two wickets.

Left-handed Mehrab, batting at four, first rescued his side from a calamitous 2-25 and then played some attractive shots in his 87-ball knock. He smashed eleven fours and a six to score 85.

For Victoria, Jaffar Quaraishi took two wickets for 29.

BIMAN -YOUNG PEGASUS
Put into bat first, Biman ran into big trouble in the 46-overs-a-side match. Three wickets each from pacemen Mukhtar Ali and Jubair Ahmed reduced the strong Biman batting line-up to 66-7 in the nineteenth over.

But stubborn resistance from Ahsanullah Hasan helped the national airliner to respectability. The experienced left-hander struck four boundaries to score 33 off 71 balls. Earlier, national discard Javed Omar hit a 54-ball 36 with seven boundaries.

Tail-enders Alamgir Kabir (16) and Mahbubul Alam Robin (19) aided Hasan to take Biman's total to 148 in 41.3 overs.

In reply, Young Pegasus were never in with a chance as the pace duo of man-of-the-match Robin and Alamgir took three and two wickets respectively.

Later, it was Alok Kapali who snapped three for 32 in 8.2 overs as only Sabbir Rahman of Young Pegasus offered resistance with a 72-ball 53 that had a six and four boundaries.

KALABAGAN - SONARGAON
Kalabagan rode on opener Nazmus Sadat and left-arm spinner Murad Khan to bag their first win in the most attractive domestic competition.

Sadat showed patience in his 97-ball 57 as the rest of the Kalabagan batsmen failed to capitalise on starts Arif Reza (21), Hannan Sarkar (31) and captain Nahidul Haque (34).

Later, Sonargaon pegged back the lower-middle order with some tight bowling to keep Kalabagan to 205 all out in 48.4 overs. Mohammad Azim took three wickets for 37 runs.

Kalabagan held back Sonargaon's chase of 206 as they stopped Elias Sunny from scoring freely. The left-handed all-rounder scored 17 painful runs in 98 minutes.

Sonargaon's Pakistani recruit Fahadullah tried his best to up the scoring rate, but fell for 34 off 50 balls. As Murad Khan got into the act, only Saif Mahmud's 43 acted as the losing team's top-score.

Murad took four for 36 but the man-of-the-match award went to Sadat for his half-century.

I am guessing Sajidul, Rubel, and Riyad did not return from Chittagong in time to play for Victoria in this match. So, Mehrab had a very depleted Victoria attack (w/o any fast medium or a tidy offspinner) to deal with.

Can't be, because Mehrab Sr plays for Sonargaon. It's Junior who plays (and leads) for Old DOHS.

Also, you can see the DS report mentioned the left-handed Mehrab (Opee is a right hander).

Abahani maintain streak

http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=27092

New ball pair Ziaur Rahman and Talha Jubair ripped the heart out of City Club to maintain Abahani's winning spree in the Premier Division Cricket League at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium yesterday.

The defending champions outclassed City by 166 runs.

For Surjo Torun, it was former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar who slammed his second successive half-century to guide his side to a four-wicket victory against Kalabagan Krira Chakra at BKSP.

In the day's other match, Nasir Hossain steered BKSP to register their first win in three matches when they beat Partex Sporting Club by four wickets at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium.

ABAHANI-CITY
An impressive top order batting display helped defending champions Abahani to put up a challenging total of 254 for eight in the stipulated 50 overs after being put into bat first.

After a solid 60-run opening partnership between Jahurul Islam (26) and Mahbubul Karim (38), the number four Anwar Hafiz, the holder's Pakistani recruit, struck 56 off 92 deliveries with the help of two fours while skipper Tushar Imran chipped in with a 45-ball 39 and Nadif Chowdhury hit four boundaries and a six to add an unbeaten 45 off 40 balls.

Shafaq Al Jabir took two wickets but he was too expensive by giving away 62 runs in his 10-over spell.

In reply, City Club were bundled out for just 88 runs in 26.5 overs.

Zia claimed three wickets for 43 runs while his new ball partner Talha captured three for 16 to demolish the City batting.

SURJO TORUN-KALABAGAN
A patient 66 by Bashar guided Surjo Torun to their second victory in three matches when they scored 167 for 6 in reply to Kalabagan's 162 all out.

The right-hander, who had missed the second Test against the touring South Africa at Chittagong due to his poor form with the bat, played 118 balls and struck seven boundaries to make his second fifty after his 55-run knock against City Club.

Naeem Islam contributed 45 off 67 balls with the help of five fours and two sixes.

Earlier Mohammad Younus took four wickets as Kalabagan were bundled out below two hundred after deciding to bat first.

BKSP-PARTEX
The under-19 player Nasir Hossain showed an all-rounder performance as BKSP registered their first win in three matches.

After a three-wicket haul, Nasir made an unbeaten 64 off 96 deliveries that contained ten boundaries and a six as he associated 55-runs with out-of-favour Mushfiqur Rahim as BKSP recovered from an early hiccup to reach the target of 138 for six in 40.4 overs.

Mushfiqur made 34 off 55 balls that saw five fours.

Earlier Latiful Azam and Nasir Hossain claimed three wickets each as Partex were all out for 137 runs in 46.5 overs.

Biman, MSC, DOHS win

Sports Reporter

There were close wins for Old DOHS and Bangladesh Biman while Mohammedan Sporting Club annihilated Victoria by 10 wickets in the Premier League fourth round matches yesterday.

Mohammedan openers Imtiaz Hossain and Imrul Kayes took 28.5 overs to reach 142 after left-arm spinner Suharwardi Shuvo helped destroy Victoria's strong batting line-up for only 140 in 44.3 overs at the BKSP cricket ground in Savar.

Away at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium, it was Rajin Saleh's 86 that made sure Old DOHS made 202-9 in 50 overs. Surjo Tarun were always in the chase but some tight bowling from the DOHS spinners ensured they fell short by only three runs.

Biman banked on half-centuries from Nafis Iqbal and Alok Kapali to secure a 15-run victory over struggling Sonargaon Cricketers.

MSC - VICTORIA
Mohammedan's fast men took control of the match early, after being put into field first by Victoria captain Ehsanul Haque.

Skipper Monjurul Islam, Taposh Baisya and Tareq Aziz all took two wickets each as the Motijheel giants reduced Victoria to 88-6.

Later, it was Suharwardi Shuvo's spin that ended Victoria's defiance. The under-19 captain took four for 21 in his 9.3 overs to earn the man-of-the-match award.

Imtiaz smashed eight boundaries in his 90-ball 61 but it was Imrul who was the aggressor, scoring 79 off 83 balls including 11 boundaries and two sixes as Mohammedan ran to their fourth successive victory. Aftab Ahmed, who was felled by a Jacques Kallis in the second Test, returned to action albeit mutely as he only had a bowl conceding 16 in three overs.

OLD DOHS - SURJO TARUN
Khaled Mashud put Old DOHS into bat and his decision bore fruit as his Rajshahi teammate Delwar Hossain snared three wickets in the first 11 overs. Opener Rajin saw the damage and build a 71-run fourth wicket stand with captain Mehrab Hossain, who scored 36 off 41 balls.

Man-of-the-match Rajin was on course for a century but was brilliantly caught at long-on by Tarun's Pakistani recruit Saad Nasim. He scored 86 off 132 balls with eight boundaries.

Delwar took four for 34 and leg-spinner Nasim took two.

Naeem Islam (58) and Shamsur Rahman (62) added 89 for the fourth wicket after former national captain Habibul Bashar fell to Monir Hossain for 9 in the 16th over.

But when both batsmen fell, Old DOHS got back to the match and it was left to Mashud and Nazmul Hossain to take nine off the final over. They were stopped by Hong Kong international Monir Ahmed who gave away just five and took two wickets.

BIMAN V SONARGAON
Nafis Iqbal hit only two boundaries in his sedate 53 as he let Alok Kapali smash the Sonargaon bowlers. But Kapali fell nine runs short of a century, after having struck four sixes and six boundaries in his 82-ball whirlwind knock. Then it was Mahbubul Alam Robin who smashed three sixes in his 17-ball 35.

Mohammad Azim of Sonargaon took three for 53.

Despite Mehrab Hossain's fine run-a-ball 78 and Sharifullah's 74 off 87 balls, Sonargaon failed to earn points for the fourth time in a row as they fell short by 5 runs. Ahsanullah Hasan took three while man-of-the-match Kapali and Nabil Samad took two each.

BRIEF SCORES
VICTORIA: 140 all out in 44.3 overs (Riyad 31; Shuvo 4-21).
MSC: 142-0 in 28.5 overs (Imtiaz 61*, Imrul 79*).
Result: MSC won by 10 wickets.

OLD DOHS: 202-9 in 50 overs (Rajin 86, Mehrab 36; Delwar 4-34).
SURJO TARUN: 199-7 in 50 overs (Shamsur 62, Nayeem 58; Monir 2-35).
Result: Old DOHS won by three runs.

BIMAN: 247-8 in 50 overs (Kapali 91, Iqbal 53*; Azim 3-53).
SONARGAON: 232 all out in 48.1 overs (Mehrab 78, Sharifullah 74; Hasan 3-36).
Result: Biman won by 15 runs.

he is an explosive opener. only problem is, he goes into hibernation all of a sudden. hope he gets rid of this destructive trait this season.

won't be surprised if Mr. Siddons wants to have a look at him before the next season begins.

At Fatullah, Kalabagan (191-4 in 40.5 overs) rode on Nazmus Sadat's 104 and a five-wicket haul from paceman Syed Rasel to win by six wickets against Old DOHS (190-10 in 49.5 overs) while Victoria's (191-10 in 48 overs) woes continued as they went down by 22 runs against Partex (213-7 in 50 overs) in BKSP.

As much as I'd like to see him post more here in BC, I pray he stays focused on his two jobs.

Great to see a South African, something I didn't know before he became ICC's new CEO, so intimately involved with our culture and cricket.

Proud to be a fellow BC member and MSC man.

So many batters are performing...all of a sudden they know how to score big!!! There is something fishy, when they come to bat in intl level they can hardly score 20 runs! All these scores have lot to do with our bowling and wicket standards.

Spot on.

It's also important to remember that DPCL all-stars are the ones who have hopes of making it to the NCL where the overall quality, not necessarily passion, is a bit better from what I've seen.

That said, there is a real realationship between passion and the paycheck, hence the glory of our club cricket.

I hope Nafis Iqbal can keep it up. Shahriar Nafees, Tamim Iqbal and Zunaed Siddique all seem to be hard workers, and an opener scoring away like a machine in the background will help them stay motivated.

That, and it would be nice to watch the Iqbal brothers bat together one day - senior's surely shown a lot of promise over the years.

Biman is at the top of the point table after 9th round-
Biman 17 points (win = 2 points) - 1 tie
Mohammedan 16 - 1 lost
Abahani 13 - 2 lost, 1 washed out

I guess still 2 more rounds and afterward 5 more in the super league = total 7 games left.

from DS Report (http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=29701)
Biman, with 17 points from nine outings, replaced Mohammedan as leaders after the latter's first defeat in the league on the same day while Abahani remained at number three.

Inexperienced ? Not really. Both Aslam and Robiul are Dhaka league regulars. Their NCL appearances are limited because Khulna got so many better bowlers (Mashrafe, Rasel, Dollar, Zia). Both have also spent fair amount of time in BKSP.

Your namesake Murad was the highest wicket taker for Khulna last NCL.

Me too! No one is happier than me. I felt so sad to see him being kicked out of the national team, now he is the highest run scorer in the premier league. he is in the Academy squad, and I hope he will be in the A team squad to tour England in June.

I still feel that he should not be in a hurry to get back into the national side He is still young and being pushed too quickly into the national team is not the best way to go for these young players e.g. Ashraful for instance.

The intensity and competitiveness is defnitely better in Premier League.

A longer version format of Premier league would have been nice, but I am afraid the clubs won't agree with such proposal.

It will involve additional money. The clubs are not that solvent, even in current 50 over format they (except big four) almost struggle to maintain the squad throughout the season.

A majority of DPL matches are being played on small grounds of BKSP and Dhanmondi, which are generally not being used in NCL. NCL OD 2006-07, where those grounds were used, was also turned out be a high scoring tournament. Also, pitches by now should have dried up and should offer very little assistance to pacers.

I am not that impressed with Zia or Milon beating the crap out of bowlers on BKSP grounds. However, Mushfiq (and Tamim last year) made his century on Fatullah, so that innings still required lots of hard hitting.

Dhiman, Ashraful, Aftab, Sakib, Forhad Reza cannot be found in the Tigers_eye's batting list. Zunaid, Shahriar has only one innings of note. This is disaster sign for the upcoming Pak tour.

Mushfiqur Rahim, Imran Ahmed, Jahirul deserves a call up. Nafis Iqbal, Habibul Bashar deserves attention. Next few matches will be crucial as we will see some fierce competition between the national team hopefuls.

Battle royal today (http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=30186)
Mohammedan Sporting Club go into the final game of the first leg of the Premier Cricket League today with an aim to finish atop. But the hurdle they have to overcome is none other than their arch rivals and reigning champions Abahani at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Another defeat for third-placed Abahani, who are three points shy of their old foes with 15 points from 10 matches, however, will simply make their position vulnerable in the title race.

Mohammedan signed five national players but they hardly got any return from them except young batter Rokibul Hasan who has played two match-winning knocks.

The performance of Ashraful, Aftab Ahmed and Zunaed Siddiqui, who lost composure after making a half-century in his first game against City Club, have been really frustrating so far.

And chief selector Rafiqul Alam was no exception.

"The performance of the national team players is really disappointing. They should show something extraordinary when they play any domestic competition but their performance hardly showed it," said Rafiqul.

"The top batsmen totally failed to take the opportunity ahead of the Pakistan tour. Only Mashrafe (Bin Mortaza) made the difference apart from young Rokibul (Hasan). Our national team bowlers' performance was not too bad but everyone knows that our main problem lies in batting," the former national cricketer added.

Abahani captain Tushar Imran, who is also out of form, sees the issue as an advantage for them in the crucial match.

"I think it's a big advantage for us that except Rokibul none of the Mohammedan national players are in form. It's a very crucial match for us to keep our team in the title race," said Tushar adding that their opener Jahurul Islam and paceman Nazmul Hossain are unlikely to play the game.

Moha is such a bolod team they sat down their best scorer the opener guy and his replacement score 5. On the other hand Abahani sat SN in FINAL of 20/20:floor:.. Even tusher said this before the game that Mogaa will play NTL off form players instead of the in form ones and we have to bank on that...

I don't understand why most of the National team batsmen failing to score?

I thought SN, JS, SH, TI will score tons of runs. But none of them are performing. They have got one or two 50s thats all.

Ash & Aftab always score like this in domestic cricket. Nothing new. They will never understand.

April 1, 2008, 01:31 PM
The most disappointed man after the match was none other than Mohammedan coach Minhajul Abedin, one of the finest batsmen the country has ever produced, who is also highly praised for his true professional attitude during a prolific career.

"The reality is that they (national players) have hardly any commitment. You have to be hungry for runs and you have to play for yourself first. A national player should show his class in domestic circuit but unfortunately, none could do it. It's funny that out of four, not a single batsman scored a fifty," said Minhajul.

"And it seems that they have appeared at the ground for the roll-call. If one national player can't make more than five fifties in ten matches, then how we would differentiate him from an average cricketer?" questioned the frustrated former national skipper.

Another ex-Bangladesh captain turned coach Aminul Islam, in charge of defending champions Abahani for the second year, was not so harsh but he was also critical of the approaches of the national stars.

"It was really frustrating the way our national players played in this match and I have doubt about their seriousness," said Aminul.

He praised Nafees for a brilliant innings that turned the match in their favour but was not fully satisfied about the left-hander's efforts.

"I must say Nafees played sensibly to win the match for us but the question is why he and Nadif failed to finish the job. It could have been a different story after they threw away their wickets in the last moment," he added.

I like these comments a lot. They have said it right. Our national players lacking commitments.

Stars by name only (http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=30510)

Mohammad Isam

When Minhazul Abedin and Aminul Islam say that something is wrong, it must be serious.

Tuesday's Abahani-Mohammedan clash attracted little crowd and produced few runs, but it drew two of the country's biggest names to criticise the overall attitude of the national players towards domestic cricket. Not that the two former batsmen are speaking from afar.

Minhazul is the head coach of his beloved Mohammedan while Aminul is looking to clinch a second consecutive Premier League title with the Dhanmondi-based giants and both are seeing these national players from close quarters. They must be appalled by the lack of responsibility; something that seems to follow the Tigers at all levels.

Barring Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and to some extent Tamim Iqbal, none of the current national players inspired anyone with their performance.

Fact that Mohammad Ashraful's only contribution of note for Mohammedan has been a two-wicket haul against Kalabagan must be a shock given that he was paid Tk 8 lakh to score runs. In five innings, Ashraful had scores of 24, 20, 7, 22 and 19.

Mohammedan's left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, bound for the Bangalore franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), bowled ten pricey wides in a crucial situation against Old DOHS, costing his club the match. Razzak's teammate Zunaed Siddiqui rose to prominence with his domestic runs, but now he seem to have forgotten what took him to the national team in the first place.

Minhazul, a former national captain and pioneer of professionalism in domestic cricket, questioned the commitment of players like Ashraful. He pointed out that the hunger among them is missing and their poor performance directly places them along the also-rans in the domestic scene.

He said, "A national player should show his class in domestic circuit but unfortunately, none of them could do that."

Old-timers who were devoted to club cricket in the 80s and 90s, scoff at the word 'pressure' of Dhaka leagues these days. Back in those heady days, players were hounded and lifted on shoulders depending on their show and any lack of commitment towards the club was nothing short of a sin.

One senior player would have made the difference back then but nowadays, a national player in the side usually means they would play their 'natural' game. They would do that no matter what situation the team is in.

But once the national player is discarded, we see a completely different picture. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim is a prime example. The plucky customer scored two fifties and a century in consecutive innings and his side BKSP are thriving under his leadership. It would have been interesting to see the same player if he was in the Pakistan-bound tour party.

It reminds this reporter of days when the national footballers were said to have 'saved their legs' for the clubs whenever they appeared for Bangladesh. The trend is similar in cricket, only difference being the players have most of their efforts for lucrative international cricket.

Even four months ago, there was no guarantee of club cricket taking place. Clubs had little money and when the board came forward with enhanced financial help, there was the Brothers Union court case that held up the league.

Now that everything seems rosier, better cricket could have been hoped for. A 'star-less' Premier League is usually ridiculed as boring and unappealing but what of a league with non-performing stars?

Well Mushfiq should ideally be batting up the order; why he bats at #7 in the national team baffles me.

Advantage Sonargaon

Sonargaon Cricketers brightened their chances to avoid demotion from Premier Cricket League when they handed a massive 80-run defeat on Kalabagan Krira Chakra in a relegation play-off at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

Kalabagan's prolific opening pair Nazmus Sadat and captain Shahbaz Butt failed to give the side a good start as they were bundled out for 127 in reply to Sonargaon's 207 all out.

Having been reduced to 73-6, Kalabagan managed to cross the three-digit mark with Golam Maola making 32 and Briag Chandra and Jupiter Ghosh each scoring 27.

Mohammed Azim was the pick of the Sonargaon attack with 3-14 from six overs while Elias Sunny and Sharifullah took two wickets each.

Earlier, the inserted Sonargaon survived early scares as Sharifullah (37) and Ezaz Ahmed (47) helped recover them from a precarious 86-4.

Sonargaon increased their collection to eight points after all three teams including bottom-table (by virtue of run-rate) Young Pegasus started the relegation play-offs level on six points.

Ramanayake needs to look at Azim, Suvashis, Zia, and Sumon Saha besides academy pacers.
