View Full Version : Smith: 'Tigers too young'

South African captain Graeme Smith said yesterday that Bangladesh should emphasise on experience if they want to survive in Test cricket.

The left-hander praised the improvement of Bangladesh's bowling department but was surprised at the way the young players got into the Test fold.

“I think your (Bangladesh) bowling has improved. From the last time I came here five years ago, the bowling has developed. They have got more skill in that department. I don't see the batsman around who played with us five years ago,” said the surprised left-hander.

“You keep picking 19-20 year olds all the time. I think it is important that these are the guys who are identified, give them experience now. Let them learn how to play around the world, so that next time we come here, they are developed, gained experience and turn into a better player.

What else can we say,,,,Other than the board, it seems like the entire world knows where the problem is..

Good observation by Smith.

We must keep the existing team for at least 5 years or so! No new players unless proven in NL, Academy then A team.

What he is saying if these guys are the best players identified in the country let them develop and get experienced. That means don't bring in new players just because they are failing. Stick with them and let them learn.

The average age of this team in mind boggling.

He's right.

We need to have some experienced players.

Ehsanul Haque is a great player. He's so consistent in the Domestic cricket. He failed in international cricket but that was long ago.. He's averaging in 40s after playing around 60 FC matches. BUt our selectors keep neglecting him. Don't know why.

Selectors are really confused about Test & ODI. They select the Test team as an ODI and ODI team as a Test. A$$holes koto gula.. Faruq bolo ar BilayMama bolo..shobai same.

They shouldn't pick any players under the age of 25 for the TEst cricket.

They shouldn't pick any players under the age of 25 for the TEst cricket.

Under those conditions then, what would be your team?

I have not seem enough of the test to be sure, but it seems very strange to me - i may be wrong - but, the wicket seems to have suited batting and fast bowling - SA's strengths and the 5-fer for peterson was only after the match was over. Did the wicket give the Bangers alot of spin like it should have?

Surely a struggling home team should have a wicket that suits its opponents weaknesses, rather than its strengths? Just a thought -c ould those who saw the entire test enlighten me?

I don't agree with smith exactly - a team that continues to lose gets a depressed mindset - only fresh players can break this. A bunch of old guys losing alot never offers room for a fresh positive mental approach.

Its easy to critisize the opponents after winning. I think Smith should have just said thanks to a great performance from mackenzie and left Bangers to sort out there own problems. It smacks of rubbing salt in the wound of a child. Since Klusener was kicked out for being the best cricketer south africa has had since ... well since i've been watching the game, the team sank to a depth were it critisizes a new team for being a new team and cannot live up to the glory days of Zulu and Jonty.

Smithy's still a great bat tho, just a pretty average captain. He should bat at 4. I wish Zulu were the captain, but our best player has not played a game in a decade.

To cheer you all up, with the caveat that this happened in SA:

Thanks for that, i do not watch the australia F team as a moral principle, so it was great to see the scorecard.

2 questions

1) Did the wicket suit spin? Judging by the comments on bouncers : NO

2) Did the bangers hold regulation catches??

Thats why i like siddon. he like to concentrate on what we have right now. not many changes in the team is actually a good idea.

1) No the wicket was a flat batting track. Did not spin at all.

2) They did what ever came by. Only Rafique had McKenzie on 131 but dropped. On the other hand SA dropped four/five sure chances in the first innings. Kallis, Smith, Botha and another guy I could not recongnise.

Under those conditions then, what would be your team?

I don't know yet

But there are many batsmen who are over 24/25 and doing quite well.

We fans should try to banish the gloom and doom atmosphere that prevails on this forum.

Please read Pundit's scorecard of the test matches between SA and NZ, and carefully analyse the scorecard. You will come to realize that a quality team like NZ perished against SA with Steyn carrying out the devastation.

IMO, BD did not perform very badly. here .Also, if anyone can access the scorecard for the Test matches between SA and Pakistan, one will also see how Steyn bowled brilliantly. I think Kallis scored lots of runs here, but in BD, he did not succeed, also Amla, but the surprise was Peterson who showed that he is a bowler as well as a batsman.

Well you guys outfielded the south africans? And all you do is blame the batters and bowlers, when you should deport the groundsmen to australia on a one way trip.

Very excellent work to the Bangers! You did far better than average whilst playing against two tough teams at the same time!

1 dropped catch is just tough luck.

Still, if he held it, the rest of the SA innings all went in favour of the Bangers?

No problems with your team at all.

Why not talk about how much better you were at fielding than the best fielding side for .. well since i've been watching - basically since the end of the nazi govt.

Smith has been our worst capt since then - but a spledid batsman - he should be at the no 4 spot.

2 things.

1. Steyn is on dope. Seriously, he should be tested right away.

2. Give us the ODI series 2-1. Gloom & doom will take care of themselves.

SA is no Zimbabwe that we expected an easy win but we saw what went out there. We saw how the batsman threw away wickets. No doubt that in the 2nd innings there were bouncers but before that all the wickets fell on the first test was due to batsman lack of patience and maturity than SA's credit. In fact, I think had it been Zimbabwe, they wouldve won the match being in that position. I bet we will even have a hard time against Brandon Taylor, Price, Utseya and Masakadza even because these players may not be as flashy and stroke makers like Ashraful/Aftab but they dont throw their wickets at all... you will have to earn their wickets. What Smith said was nothing we didnt know already but a testament that we are consistently thinking of young talents, who is the next sensation and easily get bored with Rajin/Razzaque/Mehrab/Riad/Nazim like players. That can certainly continue if we expect innings defeat like stories all the time...

1st Test our Batsmen gave a gift to SA

2nd Test SA bowlers didn't even gave our batsmen to do that...

Bottom line i have been saying this for long time now and smith just agreed with me. We needed to get all the 26-32 aged players in the team and let siddon try to fix them...

This is now like another U19 team who know what they will do in 3 years? so what guarantee is there that all these player will play continue play with 110%? may be they will lose interest like MASH. and we will be in the same loop. instead we should have worked with half skilled regeneration and let the supper skill generation grow...

To cheer you all up, with the caveat that this happened in SA:

Common sense tell the NZ massacre happened in SA, any team can be bludgeoned like that there. Its very convenient to run away from reality, afterall we have been doing this for several years. Lets not have any comfort feel factor now and repeat the same mistake over n over again. Rather make the team work like a mad dog & slog their A** out for the future. If possible, help them to do that.

but then again are The players aged from 25-30 gonna be any good? i mean the "youngs" nearly had them in the first test ........:-|

I doubt it will make any difference.

March 4, 2008, 02:49 AM

that's one of Bangladesh's problems atm, the younger guys are just as good as the older guys now (if not better) bar a couple. so the national team really does need to be mainly made up of younger players (otherwise it will be even worse) though i do believe there are a couple of older players who should be there, especially in the test format.

Of couse he is RIGHT ! The peak performance range from a cricketer, if they improve consistently, is between 27 to their mid 30s. Expecting world-class consistency from them, especially with regards to our own parhar kiriket menatlity and teenie-bopper attention span, just shows more idiotic disregard for the basic facts of life at the highest level.

Here's a pretty decent line-up, take a look at their ages: -

1. M. Hayden (late bloomer, successful in his 30s), 36 years 127 days

2. G. Smith (RARE sustained success from early age, just hitting his peak years), 27 years 32 days

3. R. Ponting (RARE sustained success from early age, phenomenal over the last 5 years), 33 years 76 days

4. K. Sangakkara (in his peak years), 30 years 129 days

5. M. Jayawardene (in his peak years), 30 years 282 days

6. S. Tendulkar (RARE sustained success from early age, still going strong), 34 years 315 days

7. M. Clarke (RARE sustained success from early age, just hitting his peak years), 26 years 337 days ... almost 27 !

8. J. Kallis (in his peak years), 32 years 140 days

9. B. Lee (in his peak years), 31 years 117 days

10. D. Steyn (RARE sustained success from early age, his best is yet to come despite his last 55 wickets coming just 6 test matches), 24 years 251 days

11. M. Muralidharan (RARE sustained success from early age, still going strong), 35 years 322 days

Except for Steyn, none of these world-beaters are even close to our average age. Despite all the delusions in the world, we DON'T have anyone in terms of CONSISTENT APPLICATION who is qualified to shine the shoes of any one of the aforementioned players when they were 'our' age, and our net result and averages show that quite clearly !

I hope THIS group of players have the chance of staying together while we cure ourselves of the jodi laigga jay infection of desparate band-aid solutions and substituting XYZs for ABCs. We often goad U19 players into the spotlight without proper technical and psychological grooming in the NCL, Academy and A-Team level, and therefore by NOT giving them the opportunity to sustain success in International cricket. Minnow-bashing grandeur just adds more color to our delusions while diluting the real facts needed to do well at the highest level.

If we don't keep these guys together, we'll see exactly the same results 5 years from now !

That's the point we had been making for long time.

But the older players (5) years ago were not good in basics. This lot is much better and can be persued with.

With the sole exception of Alok who worked on improving his footwork and batting grip, improvements we are yet witness at the highest level, most other players from that time continue to play streaky cricket with appalling footwork.

We look at the domestic numbers and tend to disregard just HOW those numbers came to be . There's not a lot of visual verification leading to the hapless glorification of guys like Tushar, Shezan and now, Mohammad Nazimuddin.

The idea is to focus on those 'basics' at the NCL and Academy levels before extensive exposure to A-team cricket. Instead, Coach Siddons has to deal with those 'fundamentals' at this highest level.

March 4, 2008, 05:41 AM

Good observation by Smith.

We must keep the existing team for at least 5 years or so! No new players unless proven in NL, Academy then A team.

Exactly, Isnt it Wat Siddons want to do with our current team...??????

But i have seen lots of negetive comments agaist Siddons speach from our BD journalists and few fellow BC members......If we really want to achieve success we must control our Bengali patience....

Here's 2 of the top ODI specialists YET to make just as good a mark in test cricket: -

1. Yuvraj Singh, 26 years 83 days

2. Andrew Symonds, 32 years 269 days

Given the difference between their cricket infrastructure and ours, we really shouldn't expect our guys to perform well enough to compete before they're in their late 20s to early 30s with a lot of 'ifs' in between. Persistent patience and unity is the only way to go for us if we expect to see the type of application we're looking for, EVEN when it comes to genuinely talented batsmen like Ash, BiZu, Tamim, Aftab, Alok, Nafees Iqbal, the new and much improved Abir, Imrul, Nazmus Sadat, Rokibul and YES GoBoy!

So, tighten your belts and wait another 5 years before we start competing better, and at least 8 years before we start winning regularly. If not, come back 8 years later.

Amen to that, and if they do, they should be kept in the NCL and A-team loop and given a chance perform there before getting more solid chances.

yes thts right! we shud have few back up team and instead of throwing them in darkness we can still monitor and nursery them in those back up team and then pull them out whn they perform well...so far few players are doing really good...Nafees, Ashraful, Aftab, Sakib, Tamim, Junayed, Razzak, mash, Sahadat, rasel, rajin....these are our future key players.they are not consistent but doing well after few game.. So we shud keep them in the team. say tamim failed to score runs in this series, but he did good in NZ series so we shud keep him... Also junayed has two big score last two series...ashraful making runs around 30's except the last match.....Aftab determoned to play long innings, Nafees is improving day by day...saqib is trying to contribute .....Mash is our most experienced pace bowler...he is out of form but can spark anytime.....sahadat is unbelieveable......razzak is very good for ODI....rasel is the best for ODI as well.......So if we dont give these player chances, if we throw them from the team if hey dont perform, how come they will learn...after all they are talented, give them some time... but some case like bashar and mushy give hem a break. bcoz they got lots of chance but they have failed to use those chance.....i think if we do it we will be a very good side not in 5 years but in 2 years....

I really hope that Coach Siddons keep about 20 core players together and train them properly. he also has to subject them to real fast bowling, so they can play comfortably. the SA Tests showed that they are unable to play against fast bowling.

I think that they can manage NTini and Nel, because they did this in Guyana. Steyn is the one who can wreck them.

After 2 tests, they should be able to manoever a bit better against him.

It does not matter that the average age is a bit higher. They are still boys playing cricket, and I dont think that BD will see real improvement until one year into Siddons coaching, he will really have to push them. If they succeed, they will not reach their peak until they are past 25 yrs of age. Hope this bunch can stay and play together.
