Bangladesh drop Zunaed and Shahadat for the second ODI
11 March 2008

This is absolutely unfair. It was Ashraful's stupidity to waste Shahadat and now he is dropping him!!!

Dropping Zuaned is also very harsh.

this change was needed that is why i always wanted to pich Mash instead of Shadat(ck my old post).....He is too expenssive in ODI.....And now it happened and i doubt it might effect on his current form......

I agree with Miraz bhai regarding Shahadat, he is a victim of Ashrafool's stupidity.

I am not happy dropping Zunaid,Rajib. I feel Zunaid shouldve played one more game so shouldve Rajib. Giving mash break for one day isn't enough if he really needed a break.

March 11, 2008, 07:34 AM
Now, this is getting too ridiculous. This short break would not work for Masri. Shahadat deserved to be played. Zunaid could have been the opener we were looking for ODI, although he was shaky and lacking confidence in first ODI, I think we should have given him another chance. Selectors have gone nuts after Rafique incident.

Yes it depends on who is in the board/selection committee and what part of Bangladesh they are from. They will add/drop depends on whom they like. Certain players will always get more chances over others while some players will never get a chance. You just need to find out the background of the past and present board/selection committee- you have the answers. Ashraful may be a prodigy (or not?), but you cannot expect a thoughtful captaincy from a 23 years old, as you have seen many times under his captaincy- he ain't GC Smith.

Welcome The_Yorker to BanglaCricket. Enjoy your stay!!

Ashraful is now in his 8th year in international cricket, he should have learnt the art of captaincy by now.

Anyway, it's a poor selection decision.

mone hoe russel notun ball a bowling bhalo kore bole ai ta korsilo. they didn't want the ball to damage the ball before russel ends his overs. also, shahadat bowled pretty well with the old ball in test.. lol.. they have a logic behind it i guess.

But as someone said up there, I can tell you guys one thing

Zunaid --> is a test player not for ODI
Shahadat --> test player, not for ODI

Sakib --> ODI player, not for test
Tamim --> ODI player not for test
Razzak --> ODI plater, not for test

Dropping Zunaed and Rajib is harsh but totally understandable in light of our so called cricket culture and its lust for short-term 'solutions', no matter how counter-productive such inconsistencies may be for our overall development.

Bringing Rajib into the attack during the 20th over despite early signs of 'the plan' backfiring was not his decision. Yet, he gets scapegoated for it while MaMu is yet to complete his dose of active rest IMO.

Zunaed, like ALL other batsmen in the team except Tamim, has done poorly trying to play the sort of cricket he never has before in the shorter version or long for that matter. Especially tough for one of the best OD/T20 strokemakers we've ever seen, period.

Poor kid didn't get to play even 5 matches in a row before being also scapegoated, while a couple of more experienced batters in the team still cannot average in the double figures over their last 10 plus matches in terms of consistency measured by dropping their highest and lowest scores during that recent period !!!

Here's a few numbers edited and pasted from another post: -

"When the finger points at the Moon, the fool looks at the finger." - Confucius (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confucius)

ShaNa (last 10 ODI innings): :duck: - 2 - :duck: - 12 - 1 - 9 - 7 - 33 - 6 - 12. That is an ODI average of 8.2. If we are to measure his recent consistency/dispersion, lets drop the lowest score of :duck: and the highest of 33, and we'll end up with an average of 6.13 ... Where's the consistency ? Especially from a "top order" batsman ! BACK IN FORM my foot ! The only thing he has been consistent about is the manner in which he throws his wicket away after looking pretty good initially. Having a poke outside off with no movement of the feet is a compulsion he needs to overcome. Even if that means not facing the new-ish ball by batting further down the order. Let's talk about that BACK IN FORM crap after at least 10 more, NON-MINNOW matches, shall we?

He is undoubtedly our favorite minnow-basher and as a Josephite, he speaks English well enough, but those don't mitigate the facts any. He failed to perform in the full-strength NCL and his Captaincy there was total crap also BTW.

Having said all that, his defense is more compact than ever and his footwork has also improved alongside his fielding quite a bit. I pray he continues to improve and becomes a steady contributor in our middle order or at # 3, and not by default or comparison to other, more pitiful performances.

Moyna (last 10 ODI innings): :duck: - 50 - 5 - :duck: - 15 - 2 - 6 - 15 - 10 - 6. That is an ODI average of 10.9. If we are to measure his recent consistency/dispersion, lets drop the lowest score of :duck: and the highest of 50, and we'll end up with an average of 7.38 ... GREAT consistency, eh ?

Maybe Moyna will become a good Captain someday, but that day is certainly not now by any stretch of the imagination. Batting-wise, he needs to clean up his technique considerably. Maybe a better-fitting helmet and tips from a cleaner-hitting and constantly improving Farhad Reza - 11.0 over the last 10 ODIs, 9.5 in terms of consistency/dispersion - will help.

Farhad Reza, one of the cleanest hitters of the ball irrespective of the type of excitable temperament EVERYONE in the team suffers from, continues to get the shaft as our team gets deprived of his valuable heavy hitting and the subsequent runs on the board. The poor kid hasn't had the chance yet to play even 10 matches against a non-minnow side yet.

MH Rubel who cannot bat for $hite but those possibilities with the ball gets our selectors to persist with him. I frankly don't see Farhad with his improved bowling to do any worse. Another story.

When will we give our newly selected players get a good run of play, say at least 10 matches on the trot against good sides?

Isn't that contradictory mate!

Dropping Zuaned is completely unacceptable, but we shouldn't judge MH Rubel on the basis of a single performance. He was a debutant and came to bat at an awkward situation with lot of pressure. He is primarily a bowler but we didn't have enough run on the board for our bowlers.

Terming player a ODI player or a test player too early in his career is our habit. We like to term player this or that. That doesn't help at all. Junaed should've played all three games. If we can't go through the pain of letting a player get through the pain of learning international cricket, why do we give them a chance so early? Total non-sense. Four debutants in two games. Are you kidding me? I don't like Junaed getting dropped and I don't like Nazim getting picked. If anyone, Forhad should've come in.

Our selectors and team management is so weak, it is not even funny. They couldn't drop Ashruful for long and now the same thing is happening with Mash. If dropping these players to teach them a lesson is the point, then let them go through the pain. Don't make it too easy for them. Now, Mash knows well they can drop me for a game but they have to pick me again soon. It wasn't worth it.

Thats a Trap created by Ashraful and our selector. he want Sahadat to get bash by using a old ball . Ash let sahadat to bowled at 20th over. thats why Sahadat cant do much at that point. the match was already gone. by this they got a excuse to bring back MaMu. shame on selector

It certainly is bro. I personally was never impressed by his batting at all, and as Billah also pointed out, he could've been out 23 times from the 24 balls he faced during the match, such are the comical lackings of his batting fundamentals.

But I do think his bowling potential requires a longer look now that hew has been selected already. I'd rather have newer players debut against sides like Ireland first, but once they're already in the team, I think they deserve a decent run. I just wish Zunaed got a decent-enough run himself.

The selectors should take responsibilty for their selections by according them that decent run. MH Rubel didn't select himself. Therein lies the tough call of a perhaps mis-timed selection.

This is a big mess filled with unnecessary contradictions and double standards from all those responsible for such awful moves.

Let's see how persisting with 3 SLAs largely on account of the WC works out for us.

My guess? Teams like SA learn from their mistakes and address their inadequecies. Especially with 2 pretty good SLAs of their own nowadays. The 3 SLA strategy didn't work for us during the first ODI, did it now?

I'd have liked to have seen my original selection before all this started play the entire series. That selection had Dhiman in place of GoBoy, Nirala in place of Aftab and Rajib in place of MaMu. Maybe try MH Rubel in place of Moyna against Ireland.

1. Tamim
2. Zunaed
3. Abir
4. Ash
5. Nirala
6. Moyna
7. Farhad
8. Dhiman
9. Razzak
10. Rajib
11. Rasel

I guess it's all rather academic now.

Anyway, best of luck to our boys, they'll need it as always ... :)

bad decisions!!

Rubel's time in the crease can be explained in one word, "clueless". Pacers bowled repeatedly outside the offstump with a slip and he tried to fish everyball without moving his feat. Lucky that Smith didn't bring in his pacers a little early. Otherwise that 24 ball innings would be way less. In one match I have seen more than I need to.

In bowling too I have seen few overs of his. That is enough. I would prefer Enam Jr. I can't take Rafique's comment that seriously in judging talent. (By the way, I did follow NCL very closely and he wasn't a stand out, even though his final tally was just above others)

A mixture of both. He is a tall guy and gets some bounce as well.

I have seen him bat and it was quite ugly and embarrassing at times. But I feel like we are being a little too harsh on him. First of all, it was his first game and secondly, he was mainly picked as a bowling allrounder if allrounder at all. So, we should concentrate more on how he did with the ball. If he does well with the ball, he can be the worst batsmen in the world for all I care.

I saw him bowl more on the flat side in the NCL, but he does generate the odd bounce from time to time, not easy to do at the SBNS ! His bowling always seemed decent meat-and-potatoes stuff but nothing extrordinary to me, and I never saw the type of variation Rafiq talked about.

That said, I'd take Rafiq's assessment over my own any day ... :)

I never understood his selection into an already SLA-heavy team, but would've understood his debut against a side like Ireland. Now that he's already in the team, I think he needs enough chances to show us what he can do at this level.

I also agree with Mijan BTW from what I've seen of him, Riyad - not one of my favorites either and a young man who didn't get a fair run of play himself - would've been the better choice as a slow bowling 'all-rounder'. The overly liberal use of that A word notwithstanding, he could've added a bit of variety possibly.

As far as SLAs are concerned, I don't see the wisdom of bringing in another one when we already have Enam for tests, and Razzak and Moyna for the limited versions.

Don't be so upset about Junaid. I am sure he will be back for 3rd ODI. Either Nazim or Rakibul (whoever score less) have to pave the way. :)
But for Shahadat, I am not so sure. In first ODI, he was in absolute impossible situation (for AshFool). And sticking with a game plan with 3 spinners, I don't see his slot in the team :(

akabir77
March 11, 2008, 10:00 AM
so they think Zunaid can't make score against SA when he has a better track than who ever is replacing. My question is what makes them think the replacement will do better?

This is the bad cycle we are in. we will try some one 3/4 games and then throw him out and pick another. We do not believe in future. all we think about is this quarter.
Ok Zunaid is not getting run but he is getting more experience and that will help in next series against IR. Now we will have two players (hope the replacement doesn't make zeros) who will have no confidence in them

About shahadat. Yeah Ash tried some thing foolish. He thought Shahadat will get reverse swing from his 1st over. but it didn't work out. Ash fault no doubt. But shahadat didn't ball very well either. he was balling way short. And with new ball mash is much better than him. So i can except his replacement. + mash gives us 10/15 runs (dancing or not) so thats also added value.

i saw the zunaed axe coming. his one day form has been horrendous. now mashrafe in place of shahabbat is a bit unfair. first off they gave him the ball late in the game and you can expect him to do anything there. i agree that none of this leads to consistency. and why wont BCB let farhad reza play? he could be a good all-rounder. replace raqib with him.

This is going too far...Junaid gets only 4 matches before being dropped, so much for giving youngsters a fair chance, we know what Junaid can do when he has settled in the pitch. In fact if he can somehow cross 15 runs he goes on to post a big score with some great batting. And as for Shahadat..he only played bad coz of Ash's stupid decisions. Shahadat was brought in when the batsmen were comfortably settled in. I am really disappointed with Siddons and the selectors for dropping Junaid...I am sure he wouldve played well in Mirpur.

It's getting too much for sure. It really seems that the selection committee or at least one member of them is anti-Farhad.

Leaving out Farhad Reza is a huge mistake. As an alrounder he is ideal for ODI, sort of like Shahid Afridi for us. Leaving out Riyad is also a mistake. These 2 played a heck of an innings in the practice match.

For some reason these selectors always seem to mess up for actual match. They learn as we go---after the match that is. Chor palale buddhi bare....So whats the point having selectors?

I dont know what Siddons doing also, either he is letting all this happen, he might be little confused as well? Or just following the order?

Can we have some sane and impartial smart people as our selectors? I guess there is no angel in earth.

I agree here. BD will never win a match against SA, because this team is 100 times stronger in the mental and physical aspects of the game of cricket. BD is now learning.
they panic and crack up under pressure like what I saw happened to England recently against NZ.
SA will never allow them to reconstruct another win, they can dream all they can, but it will never happen.
Not one BD player can be compared to a SA player, so how can they win?

Have you realized why Rafique kept promoting Rubel as his replecement for tests? specially when we have a proven talent and permormer in Enam Jr. in hand? Remember what he said about Jr? He said for NZ "another" spinner was sent, by not mentioning Enam's name!
Yes I realise that but I thought the selectors have a beef with Rafique. If not before then now (after his outburst). Now why would they consider Rubel (debut) and dish Enam Jr?

There is a difference. Atleast Mehrab Jr. bowl, Rokibul cannot even do that. I don't understand their fasination with Rokibul in ODI team.
And he is not the hard hitter of the ball, get a single after playing 3 ball,
no point..
Our Reza brother is better,;)

Looks like the Bangladesh cricket board is giving up even before the match starts. I'm all for developing good players who are able to step in when the regulars can't go, but I don't understand dropping Shahadat and Zunaed now. Plus with new guys like Rokibul and Dhiman Ghosh we have too many new players who have to compete against a far superior team. The odds are stacked up against us even more now.

what if we win with this team? where would the negative comments go, then?

1st thing first....whats the point counting the chicken (and the money we will get selling them) before it hatched?

Let them win first.... then we will thing about that.

Exactly ... why moan and whine about this team before we see their performance? :D

Until we start winning regularly, these kind of wins will be considered [বাংলা]ঝড়ে বক[/বাংলা], and all of the sensible negative comments will remain valid.

moan and whine started based on after the team's lack performance not before the team's performance. We have already seen their performance... thats the problem. We still see the same un balanced team like 1st ODI. Front Loaded non performing too many batsman... back loaded too many non performing bowler... the all rounder slots ate vanished.

Thats why you see all those moan and whine.

They are just making sure everyone fails and the team keep losing. Eventually the selectors can say: look tigerfans we tried 'em all, including Mosharraf Rubel, endorsed by Rafique (also the highest wicket taker in NCL). Since they all failed, we will field the following group in WC 2011:

1. Atahar Ali Khan (allrounder)
2. Gazi Ashraf Hossein Lipu (allrounder)
3. Jamie Siddons (wicketkeeper)
4. CEO from Warid Telecom (Vice Captain)
5. CEO from Grameen (Captain)
6. Rafiqul Islam (bastman)
7. Akram Khan (batsman)
8. Naimur Rahman Durjoy (allrounder)
9. Shameem Choudhury (bowler cum commentator)
10. Enamul Haque Moni (bowler cum umpire)
11. Arun Lal (foreign recruit, allrounder)

12. Golden Boy: Waterboy
13. Ashraful Matin: Media Manager
14. Ashraful Matin: Batting Coach
15. Niaz Morshed: Brain Coach

Did you forget his 74 in the 1st test?

Nonsense. Junaed is one of the best OD/T20 players in the country. You don't remember his T20 debut either (where he score 71)

This is becoming too much, shuffling players like play cards and gambling with our entire nation is no more than lacking of commonsense and joker act of our selectors. I now really think that these bunch of lacking proper cricket knowledge comedians are trying to destroy entire cricket of us. Haven't they really listened what Smith already said, I'm getting so frustrate years after years watching selectors are doing same mistakes again and again and destroying the potential of cricket of BD cricket and the potential cricketers by switching on and off. These kind of acts never ever will bring bright prospects for our cricket. We are totally doomed...

Dropping Shahdat might be justified. He is a better test bowler and the best we have.

Zunaeed needs to settle into team. We need an anchor to stick around with Tamim.

can't say i disagree with rajib's ouster...though ideally he should have been given another go.

nazim in place of junaid was quite dumb. perhaps Z is outta form, but this constant chopping of squad needs to stop. we need to stick with a bunch of guys for a while and let them gel.

Really unfair decision on Shahadat, and even more unfair on Junaid.

i think the current squad is close to what they should keep together for awhile, the only changes should be drop nazim when aftab is ready to comeback and maybe swap rubel for riyad. other than that i wouldn't make any changes. there are other guys i'd like to see in the squad but for one there's no one else to kick out other than players like ashraful and SN and we don't want to kick them out, and secondly with so many new players recently it would be pretty stupid to a) not give them a chance (otherwise what was the point in trying them?) and b) giving them some experience. i mean at some point they need to give the same group of players a long run in the team so that they can get international experience and so that the group of next in players can play a bit more domestic cricket and get more ready before being selected.

i'm surprised junaid was dropped, i mean i know he hasn't really performed but he has only had 4 matches and they should be backing him. shahadat i'm not that surprised about but he kind of got a raw deal because i think a big reason he performed poorly in the 1st match was due to ashraful bowling him when he did.

All Bangladeshi cricketers need to memorize the ABC of cricket. Averages will then go high and we will win 1 out of every 3 matches.

what is this business of "resting", what a load of bull, it is a cop-out. If Zunaed is not good enough simply state this... Bd does not get enough matches as it is, resting does not come into play

Since Siddons has become the coach it seems that BD cricket is going downhill, something is wrong here, IMO, he is clueless as a coach, no one except Tamim seem to have his heart in cricket and that includes Ash.
