India team
V Sehwag, W Jaffer, R Dravid, SC Ganguly, VVS Laxman, MS Dhoni, IK Pathan, A Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, RP Singh, S Sreesanth

South Africa team

Jamie Alter, who's found himself at Motera, makes his first observations: "There's but a trickle of supporters into the Motera Stadium this morning. Loud cheers as the toss happened. There's a brass band forming along the deep midwicket boundary, being given instructions to start piping up. Adds to an otherwise quiet scene. A couple of the Indian players just winding down their practice drills."

Toss: Anil Kumble has won the toss and India will bat first. It could be a bit of gamble, facing Steyn and Gang on this first-day pitch which is likely to give maximum assistance to the seamers now.

Teams: India have opted for five bowlers, with Irfan Pathan coming in for the injured Sachin Tendulkar. South Africa are unchanged from the previous game.

No place, unfortunately, for Mohammad Kaif who's worked so hard over the season to fight his way back into the team. Yuvraj Singh's form isn't very convincing at the moment, but no such doubts over Irfan Pathan. He will be an asset at No.7. Playing five bowlers has always been perceived as a match-winning strategy by India, but they haven't always been lucky in pulling it off. The batting looks is great shape though. Let's see how things unfold.

Ishant isn't fit but fortunately for India, Kumble is. He had a groin niggle in Chennai and was off the field for a while on the 5th day. RP Singh will feel the heat but this particular surface is expected to give him much more assistance.

India: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Wasim Jaffer, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 VVS Laxman, 5 Sourav Ganguly, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Anil Kumble (capt), 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 RP Singh, 11 Sreesanth.

South Africa: 1 Neil McKenzie, 2 Graeme Smith (capt), 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 Ashwell Prince, 6 AB de Villiers, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

8.55

Pitch: Alright, the experts have given their verdict. The pitch does have a sprinkling of grass, but overall, the surface appears really hard and looks fairly good for batting. The grass is a good sign and the pitch certainly looks more sporting than the one in Chennai.

I feel sorry for the Indian fans. The moment they thought they were something the roof caved in. Like bowling pins saw one by one come and go. Pathan showed he is a class above than the more recognized batsmen. Few shots up in the air but perfectly put so that no one had any type of chance. Doesn't matter how many times Morkel put his arm up.

I fear for steyn in Nov 08.

No team has won in last 100 years after scoring less than 100 in the first innings. that is out of the equation. A lead of 200/250 can allow the players first ever 3 day paid vacation (both sides ofcourse) during a test match. :)

The thing about being a long-term follower of Indian cricket is that, because of the extremely inconsistent nature of the team, you develop a stoic attitude towards cricket and life in general - no success makes you too happy because you know there is a defeat just around the corner, and no defeat makes you bitter because you know a win is just a day away :big_hug:

Well put as always!!

Steyn said that the Indians had no game plan. Once they lost two quick wickets they didn't know if to go forward or not. After every bouncer there was a good length delivery that was begging to be left alone. Indecisive in their shots saw three inside edges. Let us see how the Indians fight back.

the pakpassion eendians are full of dung...the ICF indians - whilst generally hostile to BD (no more hostile than this thread has been tho) - are bit more cricket-smart.

anyone who discounts steyn should have his head checked, and thats what most indian fans did. murali can be called a minnow basher (and he has 600 wickets against top sides!) but steyn i dont think has even played a test against zim, and just 2 against us. just shows how uppity the indians can get...puts the aussies in a whole different light; at least they dominated for years before talking smack, not just one win at the WACA.

Hey Murad, the last time I checked Steyn does not hold a BD passport.

but shahadat hossain does...and his 12 wickets came at 17 apiece whereas steyn took his at 12 apiece.

17/12 = 1.4

unless the BD batting lineup is 12/17 the strength of South Africa's, i'd think shahadat made a better reckoning thus far than steyn himself (not to mention sreesanth, RP, and pathan).

having said that, steyn is a beast, the best FB in the world right now by quite a distance, it was pure genius the way some indian fans thought steyn took advantage of bangladeshi batting lineup.

Indians were scared: Dale
Pti, Ahmedabad

Young South African speedster Dale Steyn yesterday added insult to injury for the Indian team claiming the home team's batsmen panicked after losing a couple of early wickets and lacked a proper game plan.

"The Indians were scared after losing a couple of wickets. This is what happens when you don't come with a clear game plan," the 24-year-old fast bowler said after the first day's play at the Sardar Patel Stadium here.

The young pacer, who first got rid off Virender Sehwag in his opening spell and also scalped Rahul Dravid with a beauty, said the key was bowling short of a length and then pitching the ball up to the Indians.

"The short balls followed up by fuller length ones got the wickets. Nobody could come on to the front foot," he said.

After the pasting at the hands of Sehwag in Chennai, Steyn said the visitors knew what they had to do against the Delhi dasher.

"We had a game plan for Sehwag. The wicket of Dravid was special," Steyn, who later added three tail-enders to complete his five-wicket haul, said.

Miraz, Ideally that should be our feelings for subcontinental teams.
But unfortunately, while we need support for development, we receive the least from them. We are receiving much more support from SA/Aus. We even couldn't have a tour to Ind. Pak has no option, with inexperienced side now.

Let them come down to earth, let india be smashed and shambled, they will be forced to start rebuilding with young side. And everyone knows, the magic of development is practice.

Good for our cricket, as it will open the opportunity for more matches for us. being a little mean, but if good will doesn't work, what can one do?

The worst part of this series is that India never seemed to be on the top, even when Shewag was going bonkers, India were playing catching up.

The less said about the second test the better.

India needs to take some decisions in here via the combination.

Jaffer's head will roll (for good, cant see a place for him).Since the Kanpur will be a turner I guess India will go with 3 spinners with Pathan being the makeshift opener.India might get Kaif in place of R.P and Ishanth (if fit) in place of Sreeshanth.

They need to juggle their batting order with Laxman coming at No.3.I would leave Ganguli at 5, as he seems to be the better one equipped to play with the tail than Dravid, who is a shadow of himself.Wish Zaheer and Sachin were back:-|

But again, whaterver chopping or changes will only mean something if the guys in the middle perform.

there is a vast difference between aussie quicks and steyn-morkel-ntini.

brett lee has a career average of 30, compare to shahadat who has a average of 36-37. with better captaincy, and batsmen shahadat could have brett lee averages.

a bowler like sreesanth has a brett lee type average. lee is over-rated. he ain't no steny, just a very good bowler.

then there is mitchell johnson, shaun tait, and bracken who is prolly the best of that trio.

SA pacers are a cut above anyone else.
