It came as a spell of rain falling in the desert when Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful was declared the Sportsperson of the Year during Grameenphone-Prothom Alo sports awards ceremony yesterday.

One may be surprised about the winner's name considering the fact that the right-handed premier batsman has been going through tough times this year as well as being under immense pressure for a long lean patch.

But the country's leading batsman got the award for his last year's achievement as the country's leading cellular phone operator and the leading daily awarded the top sportspersons of the year 2007 at a local hotel.

The function at least reminded everybody that it was not long ago the Tigers skipper had provided something special to cheer about as his blitzkrieg knocks gave Bangladesh their maiden one-day victory against South Africa during the World Cup in the West Indies and international success against West Indies during the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa. His brilliant Test hundred against Sri Lanka at the P Sara Stadium also marked the year.

"It is a very important award and I am honoured. It will encourage me to do better performance," said Ashraful in his instant reaction.

Former cricket captain Minhajul Abedin announced the name of the Emerging Sportsman award and it was none other than Tamim Iqbal who hogged the spotlight in the last World Cup in the Caribbean because of the left-hander's swashbuckling match winning half-century against India.

In absence of Tamim, his elder brother Nafis Iqbal received the award from ex-national cricket captain Aminul Islam.

The jury board, headed by Golam Sarwar Tipu, also featured Nazrul Islam Rumi, Jalal Ahmed Chowdhury, Salma Rafique and Minhajul Abedin.

The winners of Lifetime Achievement and Sportsperson of the Years each received Tk one lakh and the other winners Tk 50,000 each.

Hope this is not the last. He surely desrved it.

Minhazul Abedin was in the jury, must have been painful for him to agree to that.

Hope this makes him a bit more responsible in future.

Are you sure there is no typo?

I mean are you sure the award for "National Sportsperson of the Year" and not "National Bolod of the Year"?

Just praying that he can actually be consistent... :)
Although I am one of his biggest fans, I just didnt get that feeling when I read that he got this award.. but reading the tamim part just put a smile onto my face ... its really good to see him get the award that he very much deserved. If there is anyone else who deserved something extraordinary, it would be Sakib or Mahmudullah. The both of them are great players too.

its idiotic to give the 2007 award anytime after january 2008. one month is enough time to decide which of our test centurions from the previous year should get the award.

but then again, a bolod won the award, given by a bolod agency, representing a bolod nation. so it makes little sense to expect anything more.

The ironic thing about this award is that all it's previous recipients (Khaled Mashud, Habibul Bashar, and Shahriar Nafees) went south after receiving it. Ashraful will probably continue the tradition.

Ah C'mon mate,
you (read we all) should be counting our lucky stars that they managed to give the award in 2008, let alone within the first half of the year.

This is Bangladesh after all.

If this was the National Award ( the one sponsored by the Govt), this ceremony for 2007 would not have happened anytime before 2010.

First I thought that it was a no brainer, but I finally figured it out. Alhamdulillah.

The recipient of the award was decided based on the following universal truth:

"Form is temporary. class is permanent"

Ash deserves this award despite his bad form this year and all the bad criticisms he has received from fans on this forum. Remember, this is based on 2007 performance and i was hoping that he would get some recognition and my prayers came through. I am also happy for Tamim who will one day become the best batsman that Bangladesh has produced.
May Allah bless both of them.

Thanks!!
2004 - KM - 2005 off form - 2006 bidai.
2005 - HB - 2006 off form - 2007 bidai.
2006 - SN - 2007 off form - 2008 ?
2007 - MA - 2008 off form - 2009 ?

Hopefully the age factor will break this trend.

All above had a leadership role in National team. Mash jano ei award kono din grohon na korey.

If the pattern holds true Ash will have a good 2008 and wont get shown the door cause SN didn't get Bidai yet either :D

I just consulted Stuart Board's who batting #8 for England in current series has a test average of 27! This is higer than Ashrafoul's!

...SN had a good 2007
lol, 9 single digit scores out of 14 matches. only notable scores were 104 against Bermuda in the WC and 69 against Zim. I don't think that would be anything close to a good year followed by the drop from the ODI team. The sad part is 2008 shesh hoitey onek baki.

More FC cricket is one of the things that these boys badly need.
