Aftab scare for Tigers

Aftab Ahmed is unlikely to play the upcoming tri-series and Asia Cup as the aggressive middle-order batsman suffered a finger injury during practice at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

With just a week left for the start of the tri-series involving India and Pakistan, the Chittagonian was hit on the ring finger of his right hand after he tried to fend at a rising delivery from pacer Mahbubul Alam during a net session at the centre wicket.

The initial report saw a fracture on the finger but the final decision is expected to be taken today after consultation with an orthopedics specialist.

"We hope it would not be serious but the initial report shows a fracture on his finger. We will get the final report from our physio (Darryn Lifson) and then decide on our next course of action," informed chief selector Rafiqul Alam yesterday.

"There is a lot of pain on the finger and it is also swelled. Everything will depend on the physio's report whether there will be a need for any operation," said Aftab adding that initially he could not comprehend the gravity of the injury.

This is Aftab's second injury in the space of three months after a Jacques Kallis bouncer struck his face at his hometown during the second Test against South Africa in March. He was out for nearly three weeks and returned to play in the Ireland one-day series.

But this finger injury has come as a shock because the selectors struggled to find a replacement of Shakib Al Hasan, who decided to keep himself away from cricket to attend HSC examinations, when they announced a 14-member squad for the tri-nation tournament and a 15-member team for the Asia Cup in Pakistan.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are yet to give any official announcement on Aftab's injury but team operations manager Shafiqul Haque said that the right-hander would require at least 5-6 weeks to recover from the injury.

The tri-series will start from June 8 with the match between hosts Bangladesh and Pakistan at Mirpur while Bangladesh's Asia Cup campaign will start on June 24 with the match against United Arab Emirates.

Aftab was not in good form as he scored only 202 runs in his last ten one-day internationals with only two half centuries, and his batting in the recently concluded Premier League was also disappointing but still he is considered a vital player in the Bangladesh middle-order.

"He (Aftab) is a very important player in the team and we want to wait for him. We may get his service if it is a minor fracture. We are hoping for good news," said Rafiq.

Aftab's injury however may give Alok Kapali a chance to make a comeback to the national side.

Stylish right-hander Kapali was not considered as the replacement of Shakib because the Rafiqul Alam-led selection panel emphasised on some international engagement before making the comeback.

But there is now hardly any choice for the selectors to think of any new player other than Kapali, who was included in the reserve bench for both tournaments and also included in the Bangladesh A team for the tours to Ireland and England.

Junaid might be back as well.
I doubt it. Selectors clearly said Junaid's performance was poor and he needs time off. While in Dhiman's case they said he was unlucky. I think these selectors are anti-Kapali so Dhiman is the favourite, I think.

To be honest he doesnt deserve the place in the team, he showed he could play to the standards that the situation requires, but he always throws it away, and doesnt look like he's even working hard to improve his game.

Its good.

Now someone else will get a chance to play.

Nazim Uddin could play in his place. He's also incosistent like AFtab & Ash in OD cricket. Thats the problem.

I hope Aftab recovers from his finger injury quick.

To Nazim or whoever will replace him
This is your chance, you need to score 70+ twice in next four ODI
and have an average over 40+ through out Aftab's absence
This position will be yours.

Please note: I have nothing against Aftab

Sorry ATMR if you are referring to my previous post, I think I meant to say during his recovery period not absence.

After all I have to be really careful what I say in Aftab Ahmed thread.......

Well Robin proves he is useful for something. This should teach Aftab not to go for unnecessary shots. I still think the selectors will avoid Kapali, they might bring in Dhiman or they might even ignore the reserves and call-up Naeem.

The injury is worrisome and I hope he recovers quickly.

Cricket-wise, I'm not so sure how bad this is. Anyway, this may open the door for Nazim and subsequently enable some of his "fan-without-seeing" fans to actually see what he is at the moment. Then again, some fans are happy with a couple of 4s and 6s from a "top order" batsman before the inevitable fall, no matter how that may hurt the team.

I think Nazim needs to work on his appalling footwork, grip and shot selection at the Academy and A Team level before being considered.

Alok, IMHO, is still at least 2 solid A Team tours away from a SUSTAINABLE comeback, no matter how the guys already in the senior side may or may not be performing.

Anyway, best of luck to both and I hope they make me eat my words ... :)

He should have "rested" anyways...
he is becoming worthless every day and hopefully he sits on the bench only to see someone else grabbing the opportunity with both hands.

...and then he rethinks his own gameplan.

let him sit out for next 1 year.

Its good to see the selectors didn't select any rookies to replace Aftab.

"As per the board's medical committee and national team physio (Darrayn Lifson), Aftab will need a surgery within twenty four hours otherwise it could be career threatening for him as there is a vacuum in his finger," informed chief selector Rafiqul Alam yesterday.

There was, however, hardly any possibility to send the Tigers batsman abroad for operation.

"We have yet to take any decision but we will definitely prefer doing it at home if it is possible. And the time is also a factor as he needs immediate surgery," said Ahmed Sajjadul Alam, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)'s media committee chairman.

Very sad!

Hope the surgery gets done within the time.

Ashraful shouldn't bat at no.3.

He will be out playing 3-4 balls.

There is a dilema in deciding Ash's position in the batting order.

You are right on one hand and on the other his batting style suits the powerplay situation. He has the best chance of getting settled through some risky shots over the infield during that time.

Without powerplay, the result is again the same, he is out in 3-4 balls.

How to solve that puzzle? :)

Just drop him from the team. No Ash, no problem to solve

Hope and pray Aftab's fingers gets fixed.

That creates another obvious problem. Captaincy!! :) Unless vice captain takes over. Which brings up other issues. Which side of the bed he (VC) wakes up on game day and what vision did he (VC) see the night before.

It is unfortunate that this has happened to Aftab. IMO, he is still a very exciting batsman, though recently he seems to have lost form and interest.
Let's hope that he bounces back and is fit for the tour of australia.

Aftab to have surgery in Mumbai

http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=39404

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to send Tigers batsman Aftab Ahmed to India for operation on his injured ring finger.

The Chittagonian, who has been ruled out for six weeks due to injury that he had suffered during practice on Saturday, will fly for Mumbai within two days after completion of his visa formalities.

Aftab will need to be surgically repaired immediately but it was not within twenty-four hours, which the BCB official informed on Sunday.

"Actually nowhere it was mentioned in the report that he has to go under surgery within twenty-four hours that's why we have decided to send him abroad for better treatment. He will go to Mumbai within two days," said Ahmed Sajjadul Alam, BCB's media committee chairman yesterday.

The X-ray report confirmed that Aftab, who was replaced by Alok Kapali for the tri-series and Asia Cup, has a comminuted fracture of the right ring finger.

I wanted him to be dropped; but not this way. He should have been dropped for poor performance rather than being injured.
