The stage is set for one of the biggest cups in Europe to start. I would root for France but expect Turkey or Swizerland to steal the cup just like Greece did four years ago.

France

France has very tough group one slip up could be costly. Netherland and World Champ Italy in the group wont make it easy for the french , weakest team in the group is Romania (used to surprise lot of team in the ninety's)

My football knowledge is minimal, I am going to say

Portugal or Spain

Best team: Spain

Best defence: Portugal

Best Midfield: Spain by far (Xavi, Fabregas, Iniesta, Senna)

Best Attack: France

Likely winners: Germany (easy run to final match) or France

I'm getting a bit nostalgic here.

Those of us been member here for a long time, can easily recall times duing the World Cup 2006.

To me, that was the most fascinating times i've spent here on BC.

The fights, bickerings, ranting, taking sides and eventual make ups... everything was there. The whole sub-forum we had for WC'06 was worth it.

...And who could forget the great Babu Bangla bhai and his support for France...

This Euro is good, but certainly does not match with the "greatest show on Earth."

I am supporting Les Blues as well in the absence of my pathetic English team in the tourney. France have a lot of players that I always admired. Lets see how they fare.

Watched Portugal over the weeknd. They are a great team. Could have scored four goals against Turkey ( whatever happened to the surprise team of '02 WC..central defense is a shame ). Brazilian Pepe is a force in the middle of defense along with Carvalho.New Chelsea guy Bosingwa is a tremedous full back. Their midfield is vaunted as well with the arrival of a few younger guys.

Germany and Italy should be there till the end as always..

Nice to see Sohel NR bhai and Beams also supporting France. I too think Portugal has the best offensive players in the tournament and will also be a threath to reckon with. In world cups my favourite team has always been Argentina for as long as I've watched soccer but after the success of France in 1998 (along with the influence of my african friends) when I was still in Montreal in sec I, I became a fan of the french team. I must say Zizu was god like to them. I would still be supporting Argentina during the WC.

Tame start by the French to the cup. They always start slow like this. '02-'06 WC case in point when they lost to Senegal and drew with Swiss I believe. They missed the experience of Viera and Henry from what little I saw today. Benzema looks like a good young ball player though. He will star in the future. Ribery runs on jet fuel. He never stops running. Amazing stamina he has.

For me, its always Brazil no.1 from the days of '82, my first WC. That team was the best one post pele that didn't win the cup. They had amazing players like Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Junior, Eder, Careca etc. They were let down by the Defense and the goalie that year, a far cry these days with Brazilan D men dominating in European leauges.

This group is open now. Lets see what Italy does with Dutch. The Dutch have defensive issues and injury to key players like Robben and Van Parsie. Look for a Italy win today.

Two teams I dislike: England 66. France 98. Both choramani koira jitsey nijeder matitey. They can't do Jack anywhere else. The other champions are the true champions. Brazil, West Germany, Argentina, Uruguay, Italy. Ar Zizu, lol, will be known as headbutt king of the world. Platini is still the best french baller, Tigana is the second best.

82 was also my first one that i followed so closely. Woke up late nights and watched almost all games telecasted. 78 one just on newspaper. The night Rossi robbed the world was the worst night for me in football history!! That Brazilian team deserved to be among the champions.

Beamer
June 10, 2008, 12:40 PM
Agree with that '82 Brazil team. They were phenomenal. My fav Brazil team of 'em all.

France won Euro 2000. Not on their soil. Zizzu is more than headbutt player. You know that. Jean Tigana couldn't tie Zizzue shoes as good as he was. Platini is the best French player ever. Zizzu is clearly the second best.

Let me tell you about chora bajji. The biggest con job ever was by '78 Argentina that conspired with Peru to kill Brazil off. Score that game : 6-1 I believe. Argentina was at home. I hated Argentina since that day till now for what they did to Brazil.

West Germany is guilty of second biggest chorabaji of all time. WC '82, they drew with brothers Austria on purpose to get Algeria out of tournament, a team that beat W Germany earlier in the round.

Uruguay, Italy or '30s- The format was way too different. Only 8-10 teams participated. I wouldn't call it a true WC, though they won convincingly and rightly the World Champions of that time.

Engalnd- I agree. Losers though I support them when not playing Brazil.

6-0. Brazil had +3 goal advantage before that game (Arg vs Peru) over Argentina. They say it was framed.

That was blatant, I agree.
But for France, Ronaldo was taken care of the night before of the 98 finals. Everyone knows that. That is my biggest gripe!! Win it in the field if you can. Why do shady stuff to get unfair advantage? Brazil played okay but Ronaldo couldn't muster anything and missed loads of chances. Just as England's choramani will haunt every world cup they play, France will face the same consequences.

Typically great start from Spain, I expect them to fade or choke when the time comes.

Portugal and Holland look good, as does Germany who look to have quite a bit of flair thanks to players of Polish, Hispanic, Hungarian and other non-German origins.

France needs Viera to organize the midfield. He was missed. Henry should be there next game as well.

Spain has great attacking flair with brilliant short passing to free up their strikers who are good at beating the offside line. However, their central defense looks shaky at times. Offense could be their best defense. Score more to hide some defensive shortcomings.

Holland indeed looked amazing. I have been watching the replays at night and boy was I impressed with their counter attacks. Not bad without Robben, Babel and Van parsie ( though he played a little bit ) in the attack. Sneijder is a great young attacking midfielder and had a stellar first season with Real.

Greece are a joke. 2004 was the biggest fluke in the history of sports. I want them out early.

Zlatan goal must be the best of the tournament so far. What a strike! It just changed the complexion of the game suddenly which was heading towards a tame 0-0 tie.

Expect Portugal to beat Czec. Swiss-Turkey is an interesting match up considering what happened in Istanbul a few years ago. This Turkey team is no way near their '02 cousins.

France don't need Viera but Viagra to energies. Henri along with Ibramovic is the most over rated strikers. These two are the greatest chockers after Cronje led SA.
As usual Holland and Spain played almost perfect game. As a dutch fan I am worried about their performance in defense. In other day, Italy might have won the game. Remember how many saves Van der ser made. Same goes for Spain. Might have been two down before they score if Russian Strikers are half decent.
For me Sniders one is the goal of the tournament till. Ibrahomivic was good. But I would consider it is typical goal for any international striker. He have all the space in front of D box to hit the ball.
I do agree Greece is worst team in the tournament and this turk team is much worse than the class of 02. I feel Czech would beat Portugal; But Diverdo & co is much better than the Czech team.
After First round of match, my pick of Q/f are
Gr A: Czech, Portugal

Zlatan is a bit overrated. I agree. He seems to give up a lot at times, at least for Sweden, but, his goal last night was a great strike, not typical for any intl striker as you are implying. He can really strike the ball. Also, his height makes him a big target in the box. He plays well with his back to the goal.

Don't let the score line fool you though. I saw a glimpse here and there. Looked like Czec had chances ( aerial ) galore. Portugese defense is suspect, very much like the Spanish, and offense is their best defense- score more than your opponent. Great shot by C'Ron to score the second goal. Peter Cech helpless in the third goal. He had a few great saves to keep his team alive. Czec played hard, played them tough..

Portugal's defense is pretty appalling. Whoever said they have the best defense need to think twice. Czechs made the mistake of not pressing their advantage in the first half. They did well to disrupt Portugal's movement and keep them at bay but in the end Portugal only needed the finishing touches to their chances, but their defense will be tested against stronger attacks.

Brilliant Oranje indeed. I have changed my mind. Rooting for Holland all the way. They are scary good and a treat to watch. So many talented players playing as a team for the first time. All of their goals have been brilliant. France is aging and it showed. Holland's young midfield, their counter attacking ability and finish is breathtaking. They are better than Portugal because of their ability to finish.

Wesley Sneijder can become the best player in the world. He rarely makes a bad decision. Has a brilliant shot with both foot. Passing is marvelous.

Russell2k7
June 15, 2008, 07:25 PM
Buffon is prbably the best goalie. The Turkish team of 2002 was much stronger than this one, where they lost to Brazil only 1-0 in the semi. That Turkish goalkeeper in 2002 was way better than Volkan. Turkey played poorly against Portugal and also first half against Czechs. But talk about being patriotic and determination for one's nation. They came back and actually won the game. Unbelievable. This is what our cricketers lack.

The Czechs haven't recovered from Nedved's retirement, and without the creativity and pace of Rosicky, they're a pretty ordinary side to watch.

The Portuguese rested 8 of thier regular players and Big Phil decided to try out his reserve bench.

Even though the result didnot favour their way, the 2nd choices played pretty good to be honest. Its just the luck went the other way.

Nothing much to take out of that match except the host could finish it off in high note.

I still think Portugal should have won. I was a bit disappointed to be honest. Croatia changed 9 members, I think, of the team that beat Germany, and they still beat Poland tonight.

I am rather fond of the Dutch team (and not only because my wife is half-Dutch; I think it stems partly from a fondness for the Total Football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Football) of the 1974 Dutch team -- perhaps the best team not to have won a World Cup). They, Portugal and Turkey tend to be the European teams I root for. And Marco Van Basten's 4-3-2-1 formation has been pretty effective and enjoyable so far.

That said, keep in mind, that in both the matches against Italy and France, Netherlands were able to take an initial lead. This forced both Italy and France to come forward and probe for the equalizers, making their defence more open and vulnerable to the dazzlingly fast and creative Dutch counterattacks. I wonder though, what will happen if some team scores first against the Dutch. Such a team could then settle into a catenaccio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catenaccio) defensive style to protect their lead, and I wonder how effective the Dutch would be against it.

100% correct Shaad. That remains to be seen how they handle things if they concede the first goal. I don't think their central defensive pair are out of the world. They are good but average good. The two fullbacks have impressed though ( Van Bronchorst and Boularouz ). Wesley Sneijder impresses me beyond anything. Van the Man is also playing well off the ball. But, you are right on the point. I hope that doesn't happen because I would like to see them win the Euro. Turkey probably doesn't have what it takes to win the Cup, though I see them beating Croatia.

74 and also 78 teams should have at least won one cup.

T_E : I think you are confusing Boniek ( right spell? darn those Polish names ) with Lato. He was the takku who ran everywhere. He was a great player.

Germans win and the Croats continue to be surprisingly scary.

I won't be surprised to see them in the finals against the Dutch.

Beamer is right. Zbigniew had flowing blonde hair when he played alongside Platini for Juventus. Lato was the taklu who just couldn't miss. Awful to see soccer teams who can't finish.

Even the Klose and the Germans, traditionally exceptional finishers, blew quite a few chances last night. That Gomez guy is a useless Schmo ! Where did they find this hondol kutkut, and why isn't Kuranyi playing ?

Beamer Bhai, Shaad Bhai
don't worry. Our team would always score first. We have the best G/K in the world. People talk about Baffon the best w/k in the world. But how many save he made. Van der sar single handedly protect the lead against Italy and France. In any match within thirty minutes we would take the lead and kill the opponent counter attacking. People are talking about Snider but my flying dutchman is Van der sar.

Yes. Van Der Sar has been great. Not many people talk about him as one of the best goalies of the World, which he certainly is. His positioning skill is exceptional.

I think very soon Artur Boruc of Poland will become the best goalie in the World. Celtics will have to sell him soon.

Sohel : Gomez has been useless. He was the second top scorer in Bundesliga after Toni and German player of the year. That miss was horrible. I heard the French team is rife with faction and internal squabble. Once they get ousted from the Euro, you will see a sea of change in that squad. All the old timers either will retire or be forced out. Their time has gone and its time to build with the newer generation for the WC. Look at the Dutch. They have left out many old guards and re built the team quickly.

I want both Italy and France out tonight, even though im planning to watch the game which starts 12.25 deep into the night.

For sake of 'blues' out of the tournament, i dont mind Romanians upsetting the Dutch for one match.

I hope Italy wins against France. But my support will be with Turkey, the underdog. Wouldn't mind if Spain gets something for a change. Van basten's team looks like a formidable champion.

What a moron this French coach! He sticks Abidal, a left back who had a horrible cup and was dropped last game vs Holland, only to be put in against Italy in a central position, against the likes of a giant named Luca Toni! Right penalty called. He was beat earlier as well when Toni hurried his shot to the right of Coupet. Except France to lose big. Ribery is out as well with injury!

Who gave Govu the no 10 jersey for France? What a shame. How bad is he? Awful player. And why does he continue to start?

Beamer

Great save by Coupet. That free kick was going in. Pirlo picks up his second yellow and will miss the next match if Italy goes through. Benzema is beating his man every time he gets the ball. He needs more support.
