View Full Version : Bangladesh Coming to Toronto in August! T20 Tri-series With West Indies and Pakistan

June 11, 2008, 08:20 PM
6/12/2008 KARACHI: A triangular twenty20 tournament in Canada this summer involving Pakistan and West Indies is on in spite of minor hiccups relating to the event’s sponsors, a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official said on Wednesday.

Shafqat Naghmi, the Board’s Chief Operating Officer, told ‘The News’ that Pakistan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a new sponsor after a local firm which had promise to finance the contest backed out recently.

“The proposed tournament in Canada may have run into major problems after the previous sponsor backed out of their commitment,” said Naghmi. “But we’ve got new sponsors and hopefully the tournament will go ahead according to schedule.”

Naghmi said that the Twenty20 event will be a triangular affair with minnows Bangladesh joining Pakistan and West Indies in Toronto. The four-day tournament will be played from August 13-16.

Pakistan had lined up the Twenty20 assignment in Canada early this year in a mad rush to fill in the gaps in their future tour programme following the ‘postponement’ of Australia’s tour of Pakistan this spring. Australia, who were scheduled to play three Tests, five One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 International in March-April backed out of the commitment citing security concerns.

Their move came as a major setback for activity-starved Pakistan and the PCB was forced to look for alternate solutions. Confirming Pakistan’s participation in the Toronto T20 show was a part of the Board’s plans to have maximum possible games at home and abroad in 2008.

But the Board suffered a setback when a local firm had committed to finance the contest decide to back out.

However, the PCB did not have to wait long for a new sponsor apparently because of the growing popularity of Twenty format in Pakistan.

Naghmi did not disclose any details about the new sponsors but said that it is a Pakistan-based business house. He said that the Board has also received guarantee fee for their team’s participation in the Toronto tournament from the new sponsors.

I'm sure Tickets will be a hot commodity, probably need to set up a paypal/online way for BC members stateside to get tickets. So Someone could buy the tickets for us and than give them too us via Mail or hand them to us if we go to Toronto.

I'm very excited about this, but I need to get the fixtures and dates ... planning would be the #1 priority.

Awesome news. I will be there to watch the games given my schedule. I hope its at Toronto Cricket and Curling club as that is the best facility available in the city and where Sharjah cup used to be held.
I hope Bangladesh comes up with a plan to beat Pakistan because I am getting tired of seeing us lose to them.

Bangladesh go to Australia in late August, and this tri-series is being held from Aug 13 - 16. Surely it can fit into the schedule. We've learnt not to trust the reports of our newspapers at times anyways!

It's either a whole lot of jealousy on part of those who are going to miss out from joining the party, or PCB along with Cricket Canada and Cricinfo joining to mess around with "minnows" like Bangladesh, and to a lesser extent - the West Indies. Spare us Torontonians for our innocent excitements at the prospect of seeing Bangladesh play in our local ground.

NO idea about the tickets and venues. Chances are that it will happen in King city, the only international cricket standard ground IMO. King city's just north of Toronto, about 30/40 mins from my place.

If you are planning to come, just make hte arrangements. For hotels, get it from priceline, and bid for cheaper than 50 dollars a day. You're guaranteed a room somewhere in a good 3 star hotel. Tourism is in a downward slope...so less hotel costs :)

Nazim's selection was no fluke, he came in the national team after some remarkable performances for the A-team. He is also a consistent performer in domestic leagues for last few years. According to Lipu, he is a much more disciplined batsman in nets, but loses his head in match situation (Tushar syndrome ?).

T20 Canada tourney on cards for Tigers

http://www.newagebd.com/2008/jul/09/spt.html

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has tentatively agreed to send the national team to Canada next month for a four-nation Twenty20 tournament that also features Pakistan, West Indies and the hosts, officials said on Tuesday.

Sports International Marketing, a Pakistan-based event management company, which also has an office in UAE will organise the competition from August 14-17 in Toronto, the cricketing hub of Canada.

‘Primarily we agreed to participate in the competition. Now we are working on some financial aspects,’ Gazi Ashraf Hossain, the chairman of the cricket operations committee, told New Age after returning from Pakistan.

‘Hopefully, we will sign a memorandum of understanding with SIM within a day or two,’ said the BCB official, who was in Pakistan to attend the annual general meeting of the Asian Cricket Council during the Asia Cup.

Ashraf informed Board president Major General Sina Ibn Jamali last evening about the outcome of his discussion. The BCB official said the organisers have already taken the approval of the ICC for the tournament and signed an agreement with the Canadian authorities for using the ground facilities.

It was learnt that the Pakistan Cricket Board is actively supporting SIM to organise the event to cover their losses and fill the calendar following the postponement of their home series against Australia in April-May.

Bangladesh has been offered a lucrative financial package for the Canada tournament which officials have said was very difficult to refuse. But officials were still hesitating as it coincided with the Tigers’ tour of Australia in August-September. The Bangladesh team is scheduled to play a four-day match, three one-day matches as warm-up before meeting Australia in three one-day matches on August 31, September 3 and 6 at Darwin.

For the Twenty20 tournament, the BCB has decided to abridge the Australia tour and possibly the four-day will now be dropped from the schedule, officials hinted. The BCB is also pondering the idea of making flying arrangements of the Tigers from Canada to Australia.

‘We think this tournament will be good exposure for our team. The team also can be benefited from facing the Pakistan and West Indian bowlers in unknown conditions before the Australia tour,’ said Ashraf. It will be the first time Bangladesh will tour Canada. Pakistan will be playing in Canada also for first time in nine years since they defeated West Indies 3-0 in September 1999.

A new window opens for Bangladesh
Staff Correspondent The Twnety20 international tournament which Bangladesh are going to play in Canada next month will be an annual event and Bangladesh have a fair chance to get an invitation every year, said a top organiser of the event.

‘We are committed to organise the event annually and take as many Test-playing nations as possible there,’ Haroon Rashid, the chief executive officer of the event management company Sports International Marketing, told New Age.

Rashid is now in Dhaka to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Bangladesh Cricket Board for participation in the four-nation Twenty20 event in Toronto from August 14 to 17.

‘We understand that Bangladesh cricket team has millions of followers at home and abroad. So we will try to accommodate them in the fixture. Next year we will also try to involve India,’ he said.

Rashid, a citizen of Pakistan, is also negotiating with the Bangladesh Television to sell the local terrestrial rights of the event, which will be participated by Pakistan, West Indies and Canada besides Bangladesh.
Ten Sports has already bought the global television rights of the event, he said.

The Pakistani national said the prize money of the tournament will not be much high, but every team will get a handsome amount as participation money. For Bangladesh it is nearly double than what had been budgeted initially, said Rashid without disclosing the amount.

When I first went to apply for a Social Insurance Number (the US equivalent being a Social Security Number ) in this country, standing in line and being bored out of my mind as I was, I decided to eavesdrop on a conversation going on right behind me. The dialog went as follows:

Bangali 1: Er laigai tomare shobar aage eikhane niya ashlam...karon ei card chara chakri bakri kisui hoibo na...ei deshe to abar 2 numberi koron jaay na

Bangali 2: (With an expression full of despair, confusion and hopelessness at the lack of chances of performing 2 numberi) "taile ki khamu?"

Moral of the story: Ei deshe Bangali jokhon 2 numberi korte pare na, tokhon ei shob businessman kisui na. Apni tension loyen na.

Preparation for the Tournament has started yesterday.

After a long time, Siddons has finally stopped taking vacations. This preparation camp will run for one whole month. They will practice for 4 days weekly.

Siddons said that " Any team can win this shorter version of cricket tournament. I'm very hopeful. Our boys do well in this version of cricket. Who knows, we might even win the tournament"

True, the TCS&C ground has a permanently built pavillion, which makes it the better of all the international grounds in Toronto. But Canada's intercontinental matches are usuallly held in King City, which doesnt have any proper building to be used as pavillions. The TCS&C ground can easily accomodate 12000+ with all the temporary stands n all.

no hills here, bro. the ground itself and the surrounding area is as flat as you'll ever see. there are houses with their backyards on the opposite side of the pavillion. its fenced. thankfully i wont have to drive up 40 mins to King City! the TCS&C ground is just north of downtown Toronto, not far from my place.

I just hope the series doesn't get cancelled. I would love to see some live 20/20 in TCC&SC. I remember watching a Sahara Cup between India and WI in that ground. I can recall R. Powell smashing the Indian bowlers to all parts. The balls landed in the houses. I remember seeing Gavaskar but I couldn't his autograph because of the crowd surrounding him. I was hungry for food so I elected to stand in line to buy foods. I did get an autograph that day though. It was that of Marv Dillion's, after he picked up a wicket. He was quick back then.

I read from other Paki Forums that the intersection is near Dufferin and Bloomington, at King City. This also happens to be near Seneca College's Kings campus , so there should be a GO bus stop around the area. I goggled and found an address at :

13811 Dufferin St, King City, ON, Canada.

I found in google maps that is is right next to Seneca College. The satellite view does show an outline of a few cricket pitches .

Thanks for the source.

King City is the only international standard ground in TO. Either you couldn't locate the area that well, or perhaps the pitch was covered.

If it's Dufferin and Bloomington, you may get a service on York Region Transit.

Thanks for this update. I heard that the games will be played at the Toronto Cricket club grounds.

I sincerely hope that Siddons is arranging some 20/20 matches, so that the boys get into that hitting mode.
I dont think that it will be easy for them to defeat the WI again, they will have to struggle harder, it is almost 1 year now, and IMO, West Indies is a better and stronger team now, they missed beating Australia by 1 run in the 4 th ODI.

Here's my understanding on tickets, the selection of the venue for this tournament and King City ground itself...

King City grounds have been staging most of Canada's intercontinental matches for the past couple of seasons. The authorities are trying to give this ground more exposure to international cricket. A possible reason for that would be the fact that King City is managed by Maple Leaf Cricket Club, which probably has direct links to Cricket Canada.

On the other hand, a more of stadium-like ground at the famously named Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club is under the management of Toronto Cricket Club, and has its own set of operations policy. So the TCSCC ground only gets international games when King City grounds arent available.

To be honest, I personally would love to attend an international game at the TCSCC ground in the heart of Toronto, but the stand-less King City grounds, with 5 cricket fields in the park, gives more of a picnic-type environment, and will definitely make the 4-day event seem rather festive with all the crowd gathering and all. But when the players are in the middle, its all business, mind you. 4 national teams are competing in the tourny afterall, not club teams. Also, You guys might just be able to interact with the players better at the King City ground instead of the TCSCC ground. I am definitely looking forward to this. I am not sure if the regular season league games at the King City for that weekend will be moved to other grounds throughout GTA, but if they are not, it will truly be a wholesome cricket weekend at King City. Our Toronto-based Bangla Cricket Club just happen to have a 3rd div game scheduled on Saturday, August 16th :)

Nafis, you always worry about how to reach a ground! Relax... if we get to go to the ground, you will be able to as well. We wont just strand you back at your place... and now that I have a car, you should worry even less :)

About the tickets... they have not been released yet. And I dont think they will be made available before August rolls along. So as Asif bhai said... if anyone has any info on them, we'll find out right away.
