The Tigers will find their
feet in toilet!
Azad Majumder . Bloemfontein
The English speaking skill of Mohammad Ashraful may not be as good as it should have been, but he can at least read the newspapers of this language. But one cannot expect him to read the newspapers, which were written in African language.
The Bangladesh skipper must thank himself for not being able to do that, otherwise, he would have been heavily shocked after coming to Bloemfontein on Monday to play the first Test against South Africa.
Ahead of the Test, every cricket lover in Bloemfontein has been rejoicing over a comment of Allan Donald, a former cricket hero of the city, which was behind the reason of all the shocks.
The comments were published in Volksblad, the highest selling African language daily, which came to the notice of a group of Bangladeshi journalists, the moment they checked in at a lodge of Bloemfontein.
‘Just read what Donald said about your team,’ a staff at the reception desk at the Queens Park Lodge asked the reporters with Volkblad in her hand. But soon she realised it was not possible for her visitors to read it, because the language is totally unknown to them.
By the time they became curious about the article and took the help of an administrative officer named Margie Herbs, who translated it for them. The shock came immediately once she translated the headline which read ‘The Tigers have their feet in toilet - Donald’.
It was an article based on the comments of Donald who tried to say that Bangladesh will be easily undone by the pace attack of South Africa in the first Test, starting here on November 19.
‘The Proteas scared Bangladesh with their bouncers earlier this year and it was in their own backyard with the ball which does not move as fast as it does in South Africa. And it’s presumed that they will be waiting for their ball on the back foot here,’ Volksblad quoted Donald as saying.
In South Africa, someone waiting on the back foot usually means he is actually waiting in the toilet, which is why Volksblad made the headline, explained translator Margie.
Donald was referring to a home series of Bangladesh, when in the face repeated bouncers from Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini, Jacques Kallis and Morne Morkel, Bangladeshis looked very vulnerable in Chittagong.
One of the Bangladeshi batsmen Aftab Ahmed was hospitalised facing a bouncer of Kallis and Donald suggested his former team-mates to take the same strategy in the two-Test series in South Africa.
‘The South Africa should plan to intimidate them with bouncers,’ said Doland while cautioning them to remain alert on their line and length. ‘They cannot do it against Mathew Heyden, but they can do it against Bangladesh. But they have to be careful about their line and length, otherwise Bangladesh will make them repay,’ said Donald, one of the greatest fast bowlers South Africa have ever produced.

this is good...mash should now be fired up. thank you, donny! you may very well have handed us a very good performance in the first test (just ask kumble).

on the other hand, ashraful should tell rajib that our strategy is this: ash wins toss, 50-50 chance, BD bowls first, rajib bowls bouncers to "chip and dale", "morke and mindy", "click, clack, polly wack", and jaques itch. hit them in the face, balls, jaw, and forehead.

lets see how a 7 man Saffer team bowls with duminy, smith, and de villiers against us...donny can really worry about his line and length then.

no its not, it might be dumb, but remember a year back when, after thrashing india by 300 runs in the melbourne test, punters claimed "if the indians had trouble on this subcontinent like pitch, they are in for a long tour".

what happened?

india won at PERTH, and if it hadn't been for bucknor would have taken the series 2-1.

donny is setting himself up like kumble did in the WC and punters did last year. donny might very well taste some "kumble pie" after the first test is over.

Sbash, let me tell you a story - a fact of life, if you will.

My maternal grandparents live in the metropolitan (if I may call it that) city of Chittagong. Every once in a while, they have relatives that come over from villages in the outskirts and surrounding areas of the city. On one such occasion, a certain gentleman, on his first time traveling beyond 5 km from the center of his village of origin, found himself in a rather bewildering situation on his first visit to a rest room in a city.

"Where the hell is the bloody water?", he asked himself. "Open your eyes, think outside the box", said the devil within.

When confronted with concerned family members (concerned because they were familiar with his lack of familiarity with city rest rooms) later in the day, he revealed the source of the water that he had used to not only clean his face but also rinse his mouth - none other than the same water responsible for disposing of fecal matter into the city dump.

When the going gets tough, it may sometimes be worth being mean to people and slapping them silly. Donald is really doing us a favor here - someone's got to tell Ashraful and co. how to access running water when they are in the toilet, right?

Donald is really doing us a favor here - someone's got to tell Ashraful and co. how to access running water when they are in the toilet, right?

is it a real story or you're just making it up.

1. Players dont read newspapers when they are on the tour. So Donalds comments are non-impacting...
2. The (HSC failed) captain has no inclination to read any newspaper to satisfy his intellectual curiosity or keep track on who said what. He is busy with his own team and planning..
3. Bangladeshi players are thick skinned.. they are used to gala-gali and nothing phases them,, including their own coach's rebukes.
4. To think Bangladeshi bowlers would be down by the bouncers wont work. We have played even faster and dangerous bowlers in Pakistan/Australia/England. Players are never afraid of bouncers,, they rather think its a "loppa" ball. Besides, players like Javed/Rajin/Aftab like shorter players are replaced with taller players like Zunaid/Tamim/Imrul/Sakib... so players can play bouncers a bit better these days.
5. It wont be the bouncers which peggs us,,, it might be the medium pace/spin that can do the damage... Bangladesh presumably plays better against pace than spin.

Bhai, these are pretty much the best fast bowlers going around. Our batsmen are obviously afraid of them...it's clear they're uncomfortable when they face the short stuff. Pakistani and England pace bowlers really aren't much compared to the South African pacers. You mention Zunaid...he is TERRIBLE against the short ball if you haven't noticed. His height makes no difference in his mentality. Let's face it - our batsmen are afraid of these bowlers, and the main reason being the level of competition.

This test may well be significant in our cricketing history. If we can perform well here, it will give our players confidence that they can perform well consistently in tests.

I have listed the probable match in the squad as the first 11 on the list (prediction). We have lost Razzak for this test due to suspect bowling action, while Rasel has picked up a back injury. The practice match has shown shown how destructive Shahadat can be, and we can always rely on Mashrafee at one end. Batting's always a worry with both Rakib and Junaed out of form. I am tipping Imrul to take place of Junaed due to his better form, while Rakib may be retained but should bat lower down the order. Mehrab may be picked as an all-rounder. Good news is that few of the other batsmen scored in the practice match.

Rain may spoil the last two days of the match.

Yes they can get bounce, but they just keep avoiding the pull shot against bouncers and instead duck most of the time that's not a problem. I don't think anyone other than Steyn has the genuine pace to really worry our batsman...they'll get out due to their own faults. Steyn might however get 5 wicket hauls in every innings. If I was the batsman , I'd try to stay in and just score off the bad balls (sometimes with the pull shot), and make Donald drink the toilet water.

Donald's comment can only inspire our cricketer and push them to perform well or do nothing. There is not negative impact on the team.

Steyn and Morkell are the real danger man. More dangerous when they will ball in tandem. Morkell can bounce our batsmen from one end and push them on the back-foot, from the other end Steyn can grab our batsmen caught on slips by his devastating out-swingers. With all these...just don't forget Ntini.

I will be happy to see if some of our batsmen hit some solid fifties (actually hundred). What will be really pleasing to see if we can see some batting with good technique shown and spending time on the crease with determination to stay against this devastating attack. 30/40 with some slogs is that i do not want to see really......as these innings can't serve the purpose of the individual's improvement as well as improvement of the team.

Loking forward to Tamim, Ashraful, Sakib, Rakibul (I hope think tank don't make any blunder by keeping him on the bench.)

We definately need to bat first if we win Toss.I have faith on Imrul and Kayes. They need to see off 15 overs with
minimum run on the board. However, if we loose wicket early, we shouldn't send Zunaed(if he plays). I really hope
Rakib plays in this test. Zunaed will be useless in this SA pitches. Anyway, If openers fall early, who should we send?
If Rakib plays, then gotta be rakib. Otherwise, Sakib i think.

From CI
Team news

Mashrafe Mortaza was rested in the practice game to allow more time to recover from a sore back. However, he bowled off a short run in the nets on Sunday and is receiving treatment from the physio to give Bangladesh hope. Sajedul Islam comes in to replace Syed Rasel who flies home today with injury while Abdur Razzaq, the left-arm spinner, won't make it back from Australia where his action has been tested.
Bangladesh (probable) 1 Imrul Kayes, 2 Tamim Iqbal, 3 Junaid Siddique, 4 Mohammad Ashraful (capt), 5 Mehrab Hossain junior, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 7 Shakib Al Hasan, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Raqibul Hasan, 10 Shahadat Hossain, 11 Mahbubul Alam.
South Africa have fewer concerns and, barring a late injury, ought to go into the Test with a full-strength side. Paul Harris is expected to retain his place, but is coming under increasing pressure from Johan Botha.
South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Neil McKenzie, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 Ashwell Prince, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Paul Harris, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

Some of the fans think that BD batsman are afraid of bouncers... ask the players if they are and you will find out that Tamim/Ashraful/Saqib dont mind bouncers. They wont take it to their chest and shoulders like Rajin but they will pounce it right at boundary ( or jump with it with the handle to give a caught behind- a la Junaid) There is a difference between being afraid and not able to play bouncers. They are not used to playing short pitch/bouncers because its uncommon in BD pitch to produce that kind of height. However, knowing how we played them before,, our players got the reputation of "happy hooker" and "Ash-da-Pool" or "Boom Boom Aftab".. They are not masters of playing shots with balls at that height but pace? From Shoib Akhter to Brett Lee,, non rattled the BD batsman ever than Murli, Kumble, Kallis.. Yes, Steyn is a threat but he is not "Terror" like toe crushing double Ws..Donald can find out from the stats who took most of BD test wickets.. and it wont be a South African or a Pace bowler to that matter.... its been the spinners and the medium pacers.

AsifTheManRahman
November 18, 2008, 05:39 PM
Yeah, pace and bounce are non-issues. It's the propensity to hook into the palms of the eager fine leg or edge it to the slips and the lack of temperament that results in holing out to in-fielders when the runs dry up that cost us more. Movement, on the other hand, offers a different story.

Test cricket is a five-day affair - bat, bat, bat and bat some more.

Sakibul, keep up the good work.

Rahim, time to step up as well.

Remember fellas, you're playing for pride. Bowl in your zones, leave the balls that are there to be left, hit the balls that are there to be hit, and field like Tigers. Yeah, they are goanna bounce you. Deal with it, either by hooking or ducking - but if you're goanna go, go hard.

Guys - this is a Jamie decision. He mentioned that "we get blown out in the first hour of the series and want to prevent that". Well not batting first will get you that. He figures there's better odds of our bowling being steady and keeping runs down then of us being 120/1 @ lunch. I don't agree but I reckon that must have been the reason we sent Saffers in.

0.5 Mashrafe Mortaza to Smith, FOUR, shortish and wide, Smith gets an edge and the ball runs past the slips.

1.6 Mahbubul Alam to McKenzie, 1 run, defended off the frontfoot, gets a thickish outside edge out and past point. Gets an easy single and that takes him off the mark as well.

Only a matter of time, lads.
