View Full Version : Ashraful listed as 1 of the worst test batsmen

Very upsetting to see our talented Ashraful in this list but his average really is so low that even some no name players has higher averages then him...it is a shame Ashraful averages so low..he really needs to get his average in tests and in ODIs up so he does not stay on this list...wat is even more dissapointing is there are 6 other bangladeshi players on this list..but Ashraful is the only player on the current team on this list

that is definitely telling of the status of both ashraful and our cricket - JO, aftab, alok, hannan, are all also in teh list.
but ash can easily be off the list by averaging 25+, which is of course something he did as recently as early 2008. but seriously it speaks of the quality of our cricket...
interstingly, even tendulkar has single digit scores in 23.8% of his innings, which is nearly a quarter. meaning 1 in 4 times, even a great batsman will get out for less than 10 runs. this does not include 2 unbeaten knocks where he scored single figures but was not out.
basically ash needs bigger scores, in addition to getting past 10 more frequently.

Tendulkar had some off years too in the 20 smth range...nothing to be ashamed off...as long as he improves and wins a few games from here on out...all these statistical games will be sidelined immediatly

I encourage all of you to put some things in perspective before commenting:
Ashraful became the youngest test centurian on debut Vs. Srilanka at age 16.
Ashraful made captain of the national side at age 22.
He is currently at 24 years of age with massive experience and his best cricketing years still ahead of him.
Think about what you accomplished by YOUR 24th birthday before any unwarranted anamosity towards Ashraful. What have YOU done??!
P.S. he is about 5'4 and 125 lbs 'giant killer'...keep that also in perspective

I reckon ash along with Jamie how are going to go down as wasted talents, Jamie how scored 170 against new south wales then failed in the test series, he scored 190 against england 'A" 3-4 days ago.
Edit: Add Xavier Marshall to that, an extreme talent and fails even domestically

For the n-th time, only a very naive person will believe in the official age of a Bangladeshi sportsman.
Many tailenders who can bat would be better choice for a specialist batsman's slot than Ashraful.

your acting like he's 30 ...
Many Tailenders would do better than our Top order not just Ash
He's just not properly utilized, Just Like Aftab and Alok, Bashar was the only one who had the reigns to play the way Aggressive in Tests and he turned out to be fine.
*Shrugs Shoulders, Steps out of Thread*
Give him X amount if Games to play a Dilshan or Sehwag role, Unfortunately he'll never get that chance.

March 7, 2009, 11:55 AM
Ashraful should not be a #3 or a #4 batsman in my opinion...we are wasting Mushfiq playin him at #8 so we should move him up the order above Ashraful and also have Shakib up there..they have proven they can bat responsibly at the test level and have scored consistently..I have always believed that Ashraful is more of a middle order batsman..if he bats at the #5 or 6 positions, he could play his style..2 bad this probably will not happen but Siddons should really consider this move...

He's definitely closer to 30 than 20. It doesn't matter either way as he's not playing age level cricket anymore. I couldn't care less about his age, if he actually did what he's supposed to do.

He already got that chance many times and failed at that too. We gave him a good run at ODI opening more than once in various stages of his career, but he didn't get runs and he's also unwilling to do the job. His records are poor regardless of batting position or form of the game. Only one conclusion can be reached from all these stats, as the sample size is large enough in all cases.

Ashraful is still 24 and definitely has time to improve even though hes already had a lot of time 2 improve..he should just play his natural game..he just hasnt been able to be aggressive but sensible and that is what is keeping Ashraful having such a low average

His role wasn't to blast the new ball it was to see out the new ball look at the SR in those innings all Sub 60.
He gets 3 games to play in the Air and than were back to Team Rules and Only play ground strokes BS.

Some people just never fullfil their potential. Cricketing history is littered with that. Batting is a mindset. I would argue that it is 60% skill and 40% mental toughness. In our case, mentally tough batsmen are almost non-existent, and those who had some degree of mental toughness, unluckily were not technically sufficient. Ash-Alok-Aftab etc had enough skill set to be good intl. players, yut mentally impotent, on the other end of the spectrum, we had likes of JO- Rajin, who had the will to fight, but technically not solvent! So, what do we do? We do what we have to do. That is identify and persist with players that have the technical skill and 'hoping' that by playing in different situations, they will eventually muster mental strength. Along the way, some one like Sakib will pop up who combines both aspects of the game more efficiently.
In case of Ashraful, it is hard to plead for his case. Stats do not lie. His pitiful avg is not reflective of his skills. But, be mindful, that we are Bangladesh, not Australia or India, and we certainly don't have the luxury of dropping him. Players like Yuvraj Singh had to wait to get a crack in the test line-up because they could afford to so. Unfortunately, as of yet, there is nobody waiting in the ranks to supplant him. Detractors would say, how do we know? how would we know until and unless he is dropped? If we go that route, the probabilities are, we have to keep bringing in younger players. Then, we would cry that they have been brought in too early, if they fail in the transition. It is a delicate situation. Our domestic long version is so poor that replacement player from that pool will always have a question mark. Our pipeline will continue to be from the U-19 level as they come from good structure, coaching and selected from young 'talent' pool. It will be an ongoing process for next five-six years, until youngsters become matured, and Ash will hit thirty something, then he will start to fade away eventually.
So, the tragedy continues. He will retire one day with about eight test hundreds with below 30 avg. It is mostly his fault and he will go unpunished because of the generational period he is in. He can't be dropped. He is probably the only batsman in our ranks that the opposition seriously game-plans ( Bashar previously ). Mentally he is so weak that he can't overcome it by playing honest cricket. Playing for Bangladesh is not easy either. It is much easier to avg 40. when you are sorrounded by avg 50 players all around. Trust me on that. Setting the obvious aside, on talent alone, he should avg on mid -thirties, if not 40's. That will not only boost his image, by averaging higher, he will also increase partnerships runs, which will boost others individual avg. Prayers maybe?

ash is actually a year older than his cricinfo "official" age...meaning he was 18 when he hit that ton against SL, and so he wasn't really the youngest ever centurion.
but he isn't 2-3 years older than his purported age. i suspect guys like nafees iqbal, SN, rajib, and possibly tamim too are 2-3 years older than their official ages.

Yes sir I am not naive. If it pleases u, u can add 3-4 years to his age, it still doesnt change how much he has accomplished in his short career.
So u are willing to put ur money where your mouth is about tailenders replacing Ashraful or were you just trying to be oversmart?

It is a BS article, while he left out many Indian players like Mongia & others quoting they are specialist WK/All rounder. How the hell one of our pure bowler is in that list? More over the cut off line & the parameters are suitable to prove that Indians aren't crap. Pure BS.

When Ananth Narayanan says, it becomes a big issue.
What Ananth says should be no surprise to anyone who follows Bangladesh cricket, unless you are madly love with Ash and blinded by his dazzling look (whatever it is).
And trying compare Ash with Dilshan and Shewag ? How many times I have to tell you, he is at best the fake version of Afridi.
So to survive in the national team, he need to refine his bolwing and play at #8 slot. Thats the best role he can play for bangladesh right now.

Ironic that a very mediocre player like Ash will occupy this much attention of Bangladeshi cricket fans. The day we can Ignore him and pay more attention to his cricket will be a turning point. For that to happen, we need some better performers than Ash in the team and bid him sionara for a long time.

Hahaha well the more matches he plays the more the average goes down. The team should just rest him or he should just retire...will save him some remaining dignity, since we all know, that average isnt going up and ashraful isnt improving ****!
It's not a bad patch in ashraful's career anymore like most of you are hoping, its something permanent in his game... his cricket fundamentals have all got messed up.
It's very sad and dissapointing but the only way i see for him is to start training basic cricket again, like how to hold a bat and basic stance, just like beginners do in cricket.

I have been very proud of Ashraful's accomplishments but unfortunately he has not been able 2 do it on a consistent basis...the good thing is that b4 we used 2 always depend on Ashraful 2 win games 4 us which we all kno he cant do regularly and now we have a more consistent match winner in the making w/ Shakib and another very consistent player in Rokibul who is a potential match winner 4 us as well..this will put less pressure on Ashraful and we should take advantage of having Rokibul and Shakib being responsible batsmen and drop Ashraful down and play his natural aggressive style..

Do we need another thread to point out that Ashrafoul stinks? In my opinion as well as many cricket experts that he is not a batsman or alteast not a top order one. If had my way I would sack him but keep him in the team. If he continues to fail he then should be assigned to A-team where he would have to prove himself to get back to the senior team. Otherwise, we should just thank for the memory and wave good bye or good riddance.
