View Full Version : Rewind back 10 years to 1999: BD defeats PAK in ICC World Cup

1999
Eyebrows were raised as Pakistan lost to Bangladesh in an amazing World Cup match at Northampton. In Wisden Cricket Monthly, Kamran Abbasi wrote that "Pakistan lost their heads in a flurry of poor strokes and worse running," but it wasn't long before the accusations started flying, most notably from Salim Malik, who played in the match and said it was rigged. Suspicions remain. LINK (http://content.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/current/story/150015.html).
Bangladesh's first major slaughter of a Titan.
*dead* @ "Suspicions remain."
Anyhoo:
Mehrab Snr. was given a chance. Akram "I love philly beefsteak" Khan had a good knock. Sujon got 3 wickets.
We won by 62 runs.

the match was inconsequential though, pak already won the group winning all the matches and may be a bit complacent, but i am sure it wasnt fixed. pak had a very good team, 90s was the time when they enjoyed their best time in cricket. But Bd had a good opening partnership and then bowled and fielded well, won the match deservedly.
Personally I rank that kenya victory in 1997 ICC WC qualifier final as the best ever victory for Bangladesh, that was really something!

What a day and what a match it was for all the Bangladeshi fans, we will cherish this moment throughout our life. This is the match from where I started following our cricket so eagerly and will keep following till my last breath.

It was back in the days when I was doing Cricinfo. Line by lines I used to make it disappear. I only saw half of the game...and then my mind blanked and all I remember somehow getting the news that we won.

i would have to go with the 80s
...but as you said Pakistan were undefeated with wins over AUS, NZ, Scotland and WI so i was expecting a clinical performance(something like a 200 runs win) but some how we ended up getting hammered.I remember Khaled Mahmud did some serious damage in that game and then 4 years later he ALMOST won a test match for BAN at Multan.

He was a good decent pace bowler. Last time I heard about him that somehow in a Murder case his name was involved and after then no news from him.

really? i remember biddut was all guns blazing, opee was probably just holding his end up. Though opee managed several good innings in that WC. Some of the shots of biddut against waqar and shoaib(both were 90+ mph) were breathe taking.

After the game, I found out that I wouldn't have to write my grade 8 Physics exams the day after (national holiday). Lucky me, I had given up studying after the fall of the first three Pakistani wickets. That's what I mean when I say I don't understand fans these days - they think their jobs/school work > Bangladesh cricket. I pity their ignorance, really.

And my class five final exams were canceled for the day.. I remember amra shirt khule shobai pura school dorae beraisi!... Unforgettable- I truly believed we could win it when Azhar Mahmood sacrificed his wicket for Wasim Akram.. And the ecstasy after the last run-out by Opee- Nannu bhai was making announcements in Bangla and asking the crowd to leave the field but tokhon ar ke kotha shune!! And I will never forget Shujon bhai and Bulbul bhai's speeches at the presentation ceremony.. Kids these days don't get to feel these excitements..

I did not even follow BD cricket back those days, but came to know this wonderful event by an e-mail next morning, from an old school friend, with whom had no connection since SSC exam! Of course we met several time in Dhaka from there on ... and now again totally disconnected. Perhaps we need another shocking event to get back together.;)

Asif bhai, you were a Scholastican at that time, right? I remember I was in class 1 and when I went to school the guard told me that the school is closed, we were all jumping hearing that and later had an fabulous day talking about the match, really it was an unforgettable day for almost all the Bangladeshis.

Bro, had my parents not been so strict in the cases of studies and had I been the only person to have complete control over the money in my bank account, nothing else in this world, under normal circumstances, would've been able to stop me from attending every single match of BD cricket team, anywhere in the world .... But, unfortunately, that's not the case. :(
