Fans burn Dhoni effigy in his hometown
15 Jun 2009, 2314 hrs IST, Jaideep Deogharia, TNN

RANCHI: They have waited hours at the airport or at his residence to accord raucous welcomes. They have stayed up all night glued to the television,
following his every move on some faraway land. They have composed songs in his praise, and even built temples to worship him...

The adulation that Mahendra Singh Dhoni has enjoyed in his hometown ever since he stepped out to the international stage has been a most extraordinary phenomenon even in a country so familiar with the fanatical following of its cricketers. Suddenly, all that is gone.

On Monday, in the wake of Team India's exit from the World T20 in England, irate fans took out a funeral procession on the streets of Ranchi with Dhoni's effigy before finally setting it on fire. The fans, most of them students from local schools and colleges, had first gathered at a busy crossing with an effigy of the Indian skipper and proceeded to shower kicks and then garland it with shoes. The funeral procession followed.

"We are not going to continue revering these players if they fail to perform," an angry fan said, not forgetting to point out that the entire country respects them because they play and bring laurels for the country. Ironically, Dhoni was singled out with fans reminding that India were the defending champions and this time he couldn't guide to even the semifinals.

However, the protests didn't go down well in many quarters with senior members of the sports fraternity and family members of Dhoni coming out strongly against them.

During the 2007 World Cup of ODIs which saw the early exit of India under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid, Dhoni had to face the ire of fans here. His under construction house was ransacked by a handful of fans and a funeral procession was taken out. It prompted Dhoni's father Paan Singh from communicating with media. "These old eyes are not ready to see the funeral procession of my dear son. I would never ask the media to highlight his achievements if they are to show the funeral alongside," he had said them.

Chanchal Bhattacharya, who coached Dhoni in his early years, criticized the fanaticism. "When people start burning effigies of players because they failed in one match, it needs to be condemned. It is this pressure on the criketers that keeps them from playing their natural game," he said.

Bhattacharya also asked fans to watch matches more closely before drawing conclusions.

The Indian cricket fans are the most crazier ones in the world of sports. Only the English Football fans (or rather hooligans) can beat them in this craziness. But then, its this craziness that is helping the cricket in India. Imagine if there are no fans for cricket in India?

LOL, matter of minutes indeed. Burn down the guy that has led you to more glory than you've ever had in the past twenty years. Way to go.

At least they didn't throw Stones at his House like they did in 07

Those who did burn the effigys really don't represent the Indian Fans anyway IMO

Haven't seen the video (blocked at work), but there were reports that the effigy burning was sponsored by two media channels, which I find perfectly believable considering the nature of journalism here.

Poor Indians. Why did you make them GOD when they won last WC. You were supposed to remember about this day. I feel sorry for Indian Cricketers. Win/Lose is part of game. You should accept it.

Surprised ... why???

The same yuppie-driven media that weaves the customary grand blanket of delusions and contributes to overconfidence, crucifies them in the end. Classic.

AM sure when the next T20 WC will be held in just 10 months from now, the Indians fans will already have forgotten this WC fiasco and will be hyping or cheering their team. Same with other country fans.

Indian Cricketr's threat assesment:

1) Losing to Minows and getting out in First Round: Threat of being beaten/stoned
2) Losing in S8 stage: Threat of effigy burning, Processions in protest
3) Losng in Semis: Protest with plackards at the airport
4) Winning the WC: Threat of stampede; (an expression of love) & then make them gods

Intensity of media criticism is depending on the degree of loss.

What should they do? :)

I guess fans reactions are more or less similar in Every Asian country except SL.

Looking at the video, it seems very artificial. I visited an indian forum right after the loss and most of the people were in sense.

these Indian cricket fanatics are crazy..

thank god for SL..we didnt have higher expectations in T20..so it was quite a happy incident when they qualified for the semis....even if they lost the semis..its no big deal for us....

r cricketers dont know how lucky they are.. even I have met Sanga, Mahela, Lasith & Sana face to face...just smiled at them & they smiled at us & thats about it....they dont get pampered or anything in public in SL..just a polite smile or a hi..& thats about it..

if we win the finals it'll be a bonus...but even if they didnt we are happy for what they have achieved caused we didnt have high expectations from this team...

Ashraful would struggle to make it into Ranji sides because his "talent" is completely and utterly nullified by his inconsistentcy. Forget the Indian side.
