2.5 months. I am sure some players will be homesick from the Australian camp. Injuries can determine the series. Watson - Flintoff. Two key players for each team.

The Ashes starts in 9 days. Always like a battle between this 2 country even though Aussies have always won in my recent memories. In 2005 they got beaten by good English side, in reply Aussies hit them hard with 5-0 white wash. Who will win this year. I think Australia may do it. Key man for them is Mitchel Johnson, he will tear apart English top order. What do you think.

Gosh this series is long. It will be nearly Eid when they will finish this tour.

Aus:
It is the batting of MJ and Lee that may save Australia. Huges will be tested. I don't think he is still ready. North definitely is not ready although he has played good in English condition previously. Ponting needs to start hitting centuries or else he will lose his captaincy to Clarke.

Eng:
Piaj, pash'er tola can provide enough support to Anderson-Flintoff. Where is Mahmood? I like Swaan. Much better than Rajesh's darling SLA Ponir mia. Strauss should lead by example.

I want England and Ponting (individually) to fail.

Its a shame because was it not for those other countries playing cricket, this could have been a 7 test, 5 T20 and 10 ODI series.

Yeah why not play 20 test and call it the "World Cup Test". Selfish buggers (pom and oz)

I think MJ will lose his MoJo in this series. He will be proven incapable of continuing the great lineage of pacemen that came out from the down under. Cook, Prior and Pietersen will hammer him humbly, gently, cautiously and perfectly.

This Ashes will be the rise of England from the recent woes. Sidebottom and Panesar will rip through the weak(do I dare) Aussie line-up.

Michael Vaughn retired from all sorts of cricket today. He was a good captain, but like many great captains he couldn't make a recovery from the bad patch once entered. Hats off to Vaughn for all that he has achieved.

Even though i'd root for the Aussies, i think the English have a very good chance of reclaiming the Ashes this year.

While the Aussies are still in the rebuilding phase and might struggle, the English have a good compact side.

Go the Aussies.

welcome to the americanized world. where if some americans catch a bunch of bengali brothers playing karam outside with their lungis on then we are labeled as gay though we know we are perfectly straight.

in fact wearing lungi in America i got criticized by a bengali brother of being "backward/gay"

i hate the double standards... in US sometimes...

it is just cultural difference.

Shuru hoise, somehow bring Freddie to limelight.
Did other 12 members hit the pub, go for a brawl or went for gambling - nobody knows.

Same thing with Shane Warne. Some people just cannot stop being attraction seeker.
Once they get it paparazzis are ready for the next.

By-product: more hits on the site, more ads, more question brewing one after another.

Shardul, i dont think thats what Mijan bhai meant.
Usually the terminology ".... so beautiful" is associated with females, not with males.
Males are being described as good looking, cute, handsome.
Eg, Michael Vaughn at 16. He was a good looking man. (male expression)
Michael Vaughn at 16. He was such a cutie (female expression).

Sorry, this is not an english class. Its just that hearing a man describing another man "...so beautiful" is unusual to read. It does not mean you are gay. It just means that we are not programmed to read it like that. Thats all.

Aussies will win all the poll that says "Who will win this year Ashes" for the next 10 years atleast....
but I think the english has it in them to give a good fight.

I used to follow ashes (only by live score-card though) but for some reason not feeling doing it at all this year. too much t20 drama ??

Cheering for England. I want to see Ian Bell in the team at #3. Bopara needs to go back and play county cricket as Shane Warne said. Mat Prior better not drop catches or stumpings. Harmisson bowled really well against the Aussies in the warm up. Could he bowl his way into the final XI? Harmison version 2005 would be nightmarish for Ponting who took a few painful blows to the head.

Contradictary!! He scored three centuries in his last three test innings. 104, 143 and 108. I'd say anyone who wants Bopara to be out of the English team would be an Aussie supporter (Shane Warne is an Aussie). I want him out too. Cause I want Aussies to win. :)

English Media of course
Not comparing, they are saying, there is a similarity in Batting style.

I was listening to radio commentry of WI v ENG on my way back from work. Commentator was ex-english player who mentioned it few times how few of Bopara's shot was copy cat of Tendu.

TE, you missed the fact that I am a big Ian Bell fan (check out my profile picture). I believe England is a better team with Bell at #3 than Bopara and I just don't see how England can fit in both them in the same team. You've mentioned Bopara's recent surge but forgot that Bell also accomplished the same feat against Pakistan (100*, 106 and 119) in 2006. You can say my loyalty is more geared towards Bell than the good fortune of England whose faith according to you resides on playing Bopara rather than Bell.
I totally disagree with it if that's what you are implying.

As far as ability is concerned there's no doubt at least in my mind who the better player is: it's Bell. As for the edge in the current form criteria, well that too is not as dominantly in favour of Bopara as media is creating it out to be. Bell had couple of centuries in the FC playing for Warwichshire this season. In addition to his 3 consecutive centuries, a year ago he scored a century against NZ and another one of 199 against SA before tragically getting caught and bowled to Paul Harris's non turning spinner. Bell was dropped due to bad form (1 fifty in 12 games, and one not out), not due to lack of ability and not because better players are waiting in the sideline. By the way, Bell was also England's highest ODI run scorer in 2007.

Bopara's inclusion in the test XI had to do a lot with Andy Flower who formerly coached Bopara's county team Essex. The number 3 spot had been heavily contested by 3 players in England for the last year or so. They contestants are Ian Bell, Owais Shah and Ravinder Bopara. Shah had a few opportunities this year but failed to capitalize while Bopara cashed in against a weak WI test squad on some very placid surfaces. Bell due to poor form lost the place though I can argue against these weak teams he could have just as easily scored those runs Bopara made. Bopara's technique is far inferior to Bell's so if the Ball is swinging and the indication is that it will, is Bopara more adept at negotiating them then Bell? Anyway, I still don't think Bell will play in the first two or three tests barring injury, bagging a pair or a few dropped catches.

I hope I made my stance clear. Bell's a class act. He doesn't have too many flaws in his batting. He needs some self belief and has to strengthen his mental game. Barmy Army! Barmy Army!

I can't pick any team to be the winner. Australia is not in a good condition. Looks like this is one of the weakest Aussie side in recent time. But Aussies can bounce back. I've got a faint feeling that they might. Michel Clark's bat would play a great role for them.

Present England team is in a balance. But I think if KP would have been the captain it might would be a different story for them. He is a true match winner. A great leader and a very decent mannered player. A true gentleman in the field. I've seen him in many occasions showing great sporting spirit on field

Why not accomodate both if you are supporting England?

In the past, the best batsman came in 2nd down. With the South African claiming that spot, 3rd down is not that bad. You could have suggested Bopara at 5 instead of asking him to go to the county. Asking an inform player to be out of the team only suggests what I had mentioned before.

Well im Scottish so don't to favor the English however I am predicting a 2-2 draw and banking on definite results in the Cardiff, Headingly and Lords test matches for certain..I am disappointed Old Trafford is not hosting any tests and don't know why Cardiff was given preference..perhaps due to the spinning nature in the 4-5th days to produce results..

Just hope for good weather and a lively enjoyable series that goes down to the wire, the slightest resemblence of 2005 series would do nicely ;)

That is worrying on whom to choose. Most likely my players wouldn't be playing. Grrrr!!!

Just made my 2nd team there.
I've changed my first team a lot today. Lets see how my players perform this time. Hope I will be lucky with the TP atleast once in the series.

All my players playing tomorrow. I didn't select any top superstars in my team. Pietersen and Clarke are the two every team must have but they are over-priced.

And its sad that no Fantasy game for our own tour :(

Australia hasn'tt released there 1st Xi yet... IMO Hauritz should play instead of Hilfenhaus even though the spinner hasn't done well in the trial games.

Superb bowling from the OZ. Disciplined, swinging deliveries to the carefully set field. MJ keeps getting better. That was some well disguised slower ball!

They'll need to get rid of these two, KP and Colly, to put themselves in a commanding position early in the match.

102-3/28

Looks like you will be playing with 9 players. :(

As I said very difficult to get 11 players unless you know what each camp is doing. England selected two spinners??? The grass must have been shaved off. With Onion they would have gotton a workhorse. O well!!

+++
As for BD-WI fantasy series, Since Nasif is too busy and we have to rely on other fantasy sites, I have made a team
http://www.cricketweb.net/fantasycricket/index.php

This is a bit different than Cricinfo fantasy. TP becomes extremely important. If you and others want to join... Please do not hesistate. There is also no limitaton on how many you can choose from one team. Thank you and see you there!!

The OZ fail to get rid of KP and Colly as they build a focused but comfortable 100 run partnership. The longer this partnership is allowed to persist, the better the chances for Prior and Flintoff to stay on and score well when they come in. Valuable, excellent consolidation by Les Anglais. Expect an adequate to big first innings total. MJ can only so much once batsmen are set.

The OZ have MJ and a bunch of other guys who as decent as they are, lack the predatory instinct, aggression and striking ability to compete with a slightly better English strike force in this match. They'll have to bat their way out of trouble and on to victory until Lee gets back into the lineup. Lee will help a lot but the batters must do well. Because even with Lee, they're one wicket-taking spinner short in a format where you need 20 wickets to win. NO ifs ands or buts.

I'm predicting 3-2 OZ after they go down 0-2.

Poor umpiring it was out at any money.lucky KP will take his chance now.

The OZ got robbed for sure but wasn't an easy decision BiDo. The way Haddin held up his right arm, ball in hand, it had seemed like an appeal for caught behind. Maybe that confused things enough to overlook the clear LBW. We're talking split second decisions here without the benefit of TV replays.

Anyway, Dr. Haus finally found an edge on Colly's angled bat and :out:

Now he should start to script surprises for KP and bowl the odd straight and full when least expected. He'll get eventually him that way, much in the way he did.

Good catch from Haddin ... 228-4

At least you would want the aussies bat for one innings before concluding. 12 more sessions to go. England's middle order clicked today. Plenty of time for the Aussies to stamp their authority.

If England manages to cross 400, they will have a huge advantage. Its a slow pitch and England have two spinners. Wont be easy for the Aussies.

BTW KP looked like an idiot when he got out.

Prettyboy Broad can bat. England have a great chance to reach 400 and put the OZ under the sword. Anderson is having the best run of his career so far, and both Broad and Flintoff will hunt for wickets. Then you have the Panesar factor. Maybe not as lethal as he will be if the match reaches day 5, his aggression won't be easy to bat through.

That 100+ partnership Colly and the SAan and 50+ partnership between Freddy and Matt rescued England. Relatively new ball if Johnson manages to pick up a wicket or two tomorrow morning early Australia will be in good position. Paneasar and Swann should not be a batting threat.

I have no clue why Monty Panesar was selected? He hardly spins the ball and doesn't have any variations, he is the most overrated spinner since Harbajhan Singh, I would have preferred Simon Jones (seamer), is he injured by any chance?

Anyway Australia is going to win this one for sure? Go Hughes and Hilfy you guys rock

Cant argue about Monty Panesar, but check out the 2001 series b/w India & Aus. You'll know what Harbajan Singh is as a bowler.

352-2

Perfect execution continues from Pontu and the OZ. They know that England's biggest strength will be Panesar's ripping spin hitting the roughs and cracks on day 5, so they'll bat as long as possible, breaking the English resolve one run at a time. With PLENTY of batting still to come, they're set to take a HUGE lead and put England to the sword, hoping for early breakthroughs.

Flintoff did well yesterday and not doing badly now with the new ball, but Anderson and Broad need to do better. Won't happen with Pontu and company. SiKa and others can have lapses every now and then but Pontu, with things to prove, won't before reaching 150 and then 200 and more. Mike Hussey will try to outshine the departed SiKa.

England need a break. I don't see that happening soon ... :D

Amazingly professional engineering from the wizards of OZ underway here ... :applause:

Love the drama unfolding right at this moment. The English, after two quick wickets, "have the bit between the teeth". The OZ must withstand this blitzkrieg, no matter how long it lasts. Pontu and Clarke are the right guys to do it.

England know that they need a wicket over the next 6-7 overs to wrest the momentum, perhaps decisively, in their favor. Broad's turn to get that wicket. North is not all comfortable with some of his deliveries.

Australia have a earned themselves a great option at the moment. They can continue to bat, put up a lead of 300+ after breaking the English spirit completely, and give themselves enough time to bowl them out. Not having Lee and a quality spinner won't make that easy, but if Hauritz and to a lesser extent Clarke, can hit the cracks and roughs during today's last session and all of day 5, they can get wickets. Maybe not as many as Monty is capable of on day 5, but valuable scalps nonetheless.

Great first test so far ... :)

Drawski is still the most likely scenario given the possibility of rain interruptions. I would really love for us to win this though, with Horroritz bagging some and cleaning them up to rub it in even more. That would really put us in good shape and avoid any Pom headlines about "heroic rearguards saving the draw and winning a moral victory" etc.

If you think about it this is the best possible scenario for Horroritz to shine - turning wicket, 239 run lead, unloseable match, nobody expects him to take wickets, and the Poms are physically and psychologically shot. If Horroritz is unable to take wickets tomorrow on a fifth day turning wicket like this I seriously doubt whether he will figure in the rest of the series, with Twatson, Clark and Lee all set to be available (Lee later in the series). This is his moment - he needs to seize it if he can. If he chokes with all this in his favour, I would ship him back to Australia ASAP, economy class.

People talk about our team being ordinary, but it's all relative. Compared to our Galacticos-type squad from the last decade or so this team is obviously a long way away from that, but we're not playing our Galacticos squad from the last decade - we are playing other national teams TODAY. And there are quite a few ordinary sides out there - WI are a shambles, SA lost to our ordinary side at home and Pakistan conspired to lose what should have been an unloseable match against SL.

Compared to the McGrath-Warne-Gilly-etc team we used to have, what we've missed is the ability to take the weather/umpiring decisions/external factors out of the equation as we don't have the firepower to win Tests in 3 or 4 days anymore. Before it didn't matter if we lost a couple of sessions to rain because we could still take the 20 wickets we needed in 3 or 4 days. These days we need the full five, and that may not be enough even if we win more sessions than the other team.

The biggest gap right now is the lack of a spinner as Horroritz is truly pedestrian. He's the primary reason why I'm hesitant to say that if we get a full days' play in we should win tomorrow. Our quicks will really have to step up. It took a truly brainless shot from Kevinder Pietersingh who gifted him his wicket, it was ridiculous. Then he somehow managed to take 2 bunnies in Anderson and Half Monty. Unfortunately we've got from having two world class leggies to a nub like Horroritz who can't spin a bottle let alone the ball. Plus he looks too much like a wuss, like a bloke you would beat up behind the toilets after school. How can you be scared of a bloke who looks like Doogie Howser??

This team, and the new faces, will just have to earn respect the hard way, like the 1989 Ashes team did which started the legend. They're a long way away from that side at the moment - but they're doing all that we've expected of them so far.

This was a fantastic match! I believe Aus missed out on the win due to a critical decision Ponting was late to take. He shouldve declared when North and Haddin were asking what they're supposed to do: keep going or declare? Ponting decided to trudge on for a while more.....

This is the beauty of Test cricket.... the critical decisions, the uncertainties, the swings. Its so subtle and so remarkable!

A great match, top performance from Collingwood and the English lower order yesterday. The Cardiff crowd cheered every block, sang to every single! Amazing and fantastic!

May you live on forever, 5-day Test cricket!

Woot, gratz mate!!! :D

Anyway, back to our "lost" Test. :P

We all know that the first Test ended in a draw. Who would have taken more out of the result? Let's look at the pros and cons::

AUSTRALIA

Pros
Dictated terms and were in charge virtually throughout the match
Four centurions in an Ashes Test for the first time
Never looked like losing after Day 3
Horroritz took 6 for the match
Hilfy swung it all match
took 19 wickets to England's 6 even though England spend more time bowling

Cons

Couldn't finish off the Poms despite having 90+ overs to take 8 wickets
2 bunnies survived for 69 balls
MJ is having trouble swinging the ball
Horroritz took 6 for the match
Couldn't take 20 English wickets
Hughes looked dodgy against the short ball

England

Pros
SURVIVED! Moral victory and all that
SURVIVED! Moral victory and all that
SURVIVED! Moral victory and all that
Go into 2nd Test still at 0-0
Collywobble looks to be in obstinate form
All batsmen got starts in the 1st innings
Kevinder looked in good touch before throwing his wicket away

Cons
Outplayed over the 5 days
Couldn't swing the ball
Couldn't spin the ball despite having 2 spinners
Took 6 wickets to Australia's 19
Flingtoff looked ineffective bar a spell to Hughes on Day 2
No batsman got to 100

Discuss.

I usually support the pommies, but no way in hell would I support them over the Aussies. Yeah OZGOD, MJ's loss of swing is indeed quite puzzling. What happened to those deadly inswingers we saw at South Africa? Was it a fluke? I do hope Bret lee recovers quickly. I would have him over Hauritz any day.

MJ's bowling with a scrambled seam which is a big problem. Hopefully Troy Cooley sorts it out with him as he's not going to take many wickets with a scrambled seam.

Lord's home of Australian dominance since 1800's.

27 tests with only 1 loss and 13 wins. That one loss came in 1934 for the aussies.

Ponting played here twice. His scores are 14, 4, 9 and 42. He is ready to make his mark. With his fresh 150 he wants his name put on the board.

13 wickets fell in 2005 first day. Australia won by 235 runs.

Strauss passed 5000 Test runs. Congrats. If he had started his career in say 2001 or 2, I would say he would be well on for 10k.

Many fell already. Strauss going strong. 143*. Haruitz need to pick up some wickets.

Noc and Tehsin Bhai doing pretty well. Noc cashed in with Johnson TP and Straussy. Spitty is the new leader as the last leader heading south.

Great knock from Strauss, given his team the advantage on day 1. I thought we fought back well and stopped them from completely running away with it, but they've got a great chance to post 500 if the tailenders can stick around tomorrow. They batted fast as well which should help in getting a result.

We need to clean up the tail quickly and then try and overhaul this total. Someone needs to tell MJ that nobody's position is secure in this OZ side, not when you have two bowlers on the sidelines ready to step in. I don't know if this is complacency, but he needs to rediscover his yarpie form ASAP. Apparently he bowled well in the last session and started reversing the ball so he needs to keep at it. His first session was extremely ordinary.

Siddle has bowled hard but geez he's an unlucky bloke. Hilf has been good.

As for Horroritz, what a wuss he is. Crying like a little girl because he got hit on the hand, why can't he grow a pair and harden up? And why couldn't he catch that ball that dislocated his finger? If you're going to dislocate your finger you may as well get a wicket!!

Spot on OZGOD, agree with everything you say after having watched the highlights. Lee is being missed but I expect Aussie batters to compensate that when the time comes, unless his absence allows England to score really big in the first.

It is notoriously difficult to replace an all time great like Warne, but I for one never rated Hauritz. His wussiness doesn't surprise me at all. I think even a part-timer like Michael Clarke with his gumption is likely to be more effective.

I'm sure that after the Poms dismiss us tomorrow morning UK time we'll be sent out to field for another session or two so they can post a lead of 500-odd. Not sure how much rain is forecast (hopefully heaps) but they have a shitload of time. If we had been bowled out tonight, I'd have sent us back in for more punishment and hopefully take another few wickets in the conditions. If tomorrow is sunny though I would definitely bat again if I were England. Add some quickfire runs, force the OZ to chase leather, then declare with a lead of 500+. That would still give England 2 1/2 days to bowl OZ out.

I just watched the highlights and geez some of those shots we played to get out were very ordinary. If I had played those pulls back when I used to play grade cricket in OZ my coach would've sent me home for being an idiot. Flingtoff's ball that took Hussey's wicket was fantastic and North was a bit unlucky but the other wickets were mainly poor shot selection - pulling the ball when you have fielders there waiting for the shot isn't good judgment. I know Hussey says it's an instinct shot and God knows I've been out hooking and pulling many many times in grade and schoolboy cricket but these guys are supposed to be our country's best batsmen. Poor shot selection!!

I'm also worried about these guys' weaknesses against the moving ball - in Cardiff they made hay, but once it got overcast and the ball started to move Clarke, North and Haddin all looked very ordinary. Ponting got thiefed out but was out anyway but basically it's just him, Krapich and Hussey who have looked solid from a technique point of view.

As for the bowling, MJ needs to go back to basics. He's trying too hard and is spraying it all over the shop. Forget about trying to swing the ball, forget about using the Lords slope -- just try and control the ball. Keep it tight, play a supporting role to the Hilf and get his rhythm back. He looks desperately short of confidence. Just needs to keep it simple. If he can't learn how to do this by the end of the Test he needs to be dropped for either Lee or Clark as he has been the worst of our three quicks.

That said, all is not lost. We didn't become a shlt team overnight, though it looks that way. We're just a lot more inconsistent than we have been in the past. It was just a week ago that the roles were reversed and England were in our position, getting totally outplayed. This Test is a lost cause in terms of winning, but if we can fight hard and not roll over like spineless chumps, even if we lose this one we can take some confidence going into the next Test. LOL now I really sound like a Pom. Rain dance anyone? :D

Is it a season of collapses? Of course it looks like a great innings after watching Pakistan's three-in-a-row collapses, but it is a collapse alright. There was a time when the Australian batsmen failed and it looked like a collapse, someone would step up and save the day. Not anymore. They are mortals. They collapse against good bowling.

Aussie morale is half broke by Panesar. This collapse will inch them towards complete insanity.

OzGod,

There's a smell about the Windies in the 90s about this Australian team - a great side, then the great players retired, it kept winning for a couple of years as thats all they knew how to do, then the wheels fell off.

Koerzten and Doctrove have made a lot of bad decisions in this match that have proven crucial in determining the general outcome of it in which case England has got the upper hand out of it..

Wow, I was reading the bulletin and it was like one incorrect decision after another, with England benefiting.

I hate it when that happens.

If England can thwart four days of pounding by one day's dubious batting, we can thwart 3 days of pounding with 2 days of awesome batting!

522? Bah, that's nothing! :)

I was reading the following article, as for the readers for me it was also not so pleasant to find Waugh and Ponting left out.

Is England missing Panesar or not?
