Even without the main WI national players, the WICB has assembled a very good team with a few well known names. IMO, this group is better than the test team, so I feel that BD will be more than tested here. WI are known for their hard hittng.

Guys, instead of persisting with Ash at #3(where he avg 17), why don't we just drop him down the order? We desperately need a finisher in our ODI team and Ash can do that job at #6 or 7. He won't feel extra responsibility and can play his natural game, thus scoring quick runs for us. I say this should be our batting order-

Tamim
Mehrab/Imrul/Junaed
Rokibul
Mushfiq
Shakib
Ashraful
Riyad
Naeem
Razzak
Nazmul
Rubel

If he fails, Aftab or Alok can replace him in that slot as the finisher. We should stop giving up that dream of having him play at #3 and carrying the innings. Because his untimely and irresponsible outs always puts extra pressure on the team and is often the reason for our defeat. If he is to play in the current team, he should bat at 6 or 7.

yaseer
July 22, 2009, 03:03 AM
We have a practice match. So, ASH and others have some chance to get some runs behind them. Also the pace bowlers need to have some practice.

pichchi
July 22, 2009, 03:10 AM
Hmm.. interestingly, Ash averages 34 at #6! Much higher than his career average.. And isn't that the position where he played at the start of 07 WC? Here are his detailed batting performances in different positions-

Mat Inn. NO Run HS Avg. BF SR 100s 50s
1st position 2003-2004 6 6 0 94 66 15.66 185 50.81 0 1
2nd position 2001-2006 18 18 0 264 56 14.66 480 55.00 0 2
3rd position 2001-2009 28 28 2 443 109 17.03 674 65.72 1 1
4th position 2004-2009 44 44 2 1142 100 27.19 1504 75.93 1 8
5th position 2004-2007 22 22 2 523 87 26.15 628 83.28 0 2
6th position 2003-2007 11 11 4 239 60 34.14 280 85.35 0 2
7th position 2007-2007 3 3 2 56 45* 56.00 91 61.53 0 0

Hmm.. interestingly, Ash averages 34 at #6!

And at 7th an average of 56. Imagine at 12, Bradman would be proud.

[বাংলা]i think we are gonna do well whatever team they send in the middle. but i'm really pleased to see one thing from this test series that these are the players who are gonna be the future team of WI. most the players of crrent WI team gonna retire in next 5 years. most our players gonna play twice that. so our team gonna be more and more solid in future i guess(at least comparing to the next WI nation squad).

anywayz i am happy that WI got back their real team now. i wish they are gonna do really well and show us the same spirit and get the wins in ODI series as well. if we do get the good result then it'll be proven that that test team wasn't the matter of our winnings.

শুভ কামনা রইলো আমাদের প্রিয় ক্রিকেট দলের জন্য। ইনশাল্লাহ এবারও জয় আমাদেরই হবে।[/বাংলা]

Just a fan's reaction:

the Original West Indies would never loose to a weaaak team like Bangladesh. West Indies Originals are World Class Players, some of the best in the world like Gayle, Sarwan, Chanderpaul. I aint payin $60 to watch 2 weak teams play each other. Bangladesh and 4th string West Indies makeshift nonsense is worth to watch for free. No way West Indies top 11 would loose to Bangladesh ever.

Dominica news online

ROSEAU, Dominica, July 16, CMC – Though overshadowed by the bitter ongoing dispute between the West Indies Cricket Board and the West Indies Players Association, cricket authorities here say plans are progressing smoothly for the country’s hosting of its first ever international match.

Dominica are bracing for the two opening One-Day Internationals of the three-match series against Bangladesh series, scheduled for July 26 and 28.

Dominica Cricket Association president, Emmanuel Nanthan said despite the industrial action by the first choice West Indies squad, the country was focused on being ready for the historic moment.

“We are really prepared to move forward and to move forward for the development of cricket and that’s where we are,” Nanthan said.

“With regards to who will be there I cannot say who will be there. I do not know how long these players are going to protest and for how long they will be with holding their services.”

West Indies players last week refused to play just days ahead of the opening Test against Bangladesh, citing pay and contract issues.

It resulted in selectors having to hastily assemble an inexperienced 15-man squad to contest the match at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex in St Vincent.

With the impasse showing no signs of ending especially after talks between WIPA and the WICB broke down last week, it is expected that the second string squad will also contest the ODIs.

Nanthan, also a WICB director, said he believed the Dominican public would throw their support behind the matches, regardless of the team on show.

“The board is still waiting on word from our negotiating team and they will advise on how we go forward and we are dependent on them for that,” said Nanthan.

“I am sure that the Dominican public will get a team that they will like and appreciate and will move forward with full body mind and soul.”

Both ODIs will be hosted at the newly refurbished Windsor Park Stadium.

Click to read the comments. I'm feeling bad for the Dominicans.

Doctrove urges support for historic international matches

ROSEAU, Dominica, June 30, CMC – ICC Elite Panel umpire Billy Doctrove has urged Dominicans to turn out in large numbers for the two historic One-Day Internationals between West Indies and Bangladesh at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium here next month.

The fixtures, carded for July 26 and 28, represent the first time international cricket will be played in the small Caribbean nation and Doctrove said overwhelming spectator support would augur well for the country’s hosting of other international matches.

“I would like to take this opportunity to make an appeal to the Dominican public to support the Dominica Cricket Association and the West Indies Cricket Board by purchasing tickets to watch the two One-Day Internationals,” said Doctrove, who will be officiating in both matches.

“This is history in the making and we need to support the matches if we want to host other matches future. We have an impressive and outstanding sporting stadium and we need Dominicans to play their part in ensuring that the Windsor Park is filled to capacity and remain in the forefront for hosting these types of matches.”

Doctrove, who has stood in 23 Tests and 83 ODIs, said he was looking forward to officiating in these two matches on home soil.

“I will be the on field umpire in both of these matches and that is something that I have always looked forward to, that is, officiating an international match in front of my home crowd. So come on, let’s enjoy the moment,” he urged.

Windsor Park was built at a cost of EC$33 million (US$17 million) as a gift to the country from the People’s Republic of China. Completed in 2007, the complex boasts a capacity of nearly 12 000 seats.

Dominican Doctrove contended that the entire nation had a role to play in ensuring the development of cricket in the island.

“We need to enjoy the moment and enjoy the spectacle,” he stressed.

“Let us all play our part in the further and continued development of West Indies cricket.”

Confirmation:

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, July 21, CMC – West Indies selectors are expected to stick with the second-string squad already selected for the first two One-Day Internationals against Bangladesh, despite the marquee players making themselves available for selection.

CMC Sports understands that the West Indies Cricket Board will not alter the 14-man squad announced Monday for the double-header in Dominica on July 26 and 28.

Mumbai:
Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons wants other players to share responsibility and ease the burden off the acting captain Shakib Al Hasan.

“Shakib has done a fantastic job and it is great to see that the responsibility has not affected his performance. Though I’d still want other members of the team to contribute equally and share the burden, as captaining our team is very difficult and especially for such young men like Ashraful and Shakib,” Siddon told Cricketnirvana.

“Shakib is a world class player and Bangladesh should be very excited about his performance. He was actually one of my choices as captain when Ashraful was to be replaced.”

However, in the series-winning Test against Windies, Shakib could not complete his century in the second innings. “Shakib contributed but the whole team played very well and should be applauded for their efforts. We are an improving, very young team that will have many ups and downs for a while to come. I feel we must give these talented players time to mature and become more confident at playing international cricket.

“As a coach I was alarmed at the reaction of many people to our result in England recently, as it was not a true reflection of the team’s ability. I am glad we have now shown that we are a good side and an improving one. There are many areas that we need to work on but it all takes time and patience,” said Siddons.

I am good bro, how have you been?

Actually we have given way too many chances to Ashraful even in the ODIs, my worst nightmare is if he clicks in any one of the ODIs, I certainly hope he fails, if he even scores one 40, his die hard fans will be willing to keep him in the squad despite his failures . When I start talking about dropping him some of his die hard fans will protest and say something like "Drop Raqibul before you drop Ashraful" Anyway we all saw who performed better? Rocky or Ash

Rokibul may be score 40 from 80 balls...will it help BD to score a high total or may be it will affect the other batsman and it will increase the asking RR, I have a lot of doubt about Rokibul's ability in ODI or T20. On the other hand Ash may be score 20 from 10 balls...still I believe in Ash.

yes I agree, I can pinpoint 3 guys, Rakibul, Riyad and Mushfiq who were all at sea in T20s. They have a limited range of strokes and are found out and will be in future unless they changes their styles and add more strokes to their game. They can still pass off in ODIs though but I want to see guys like Aftab, Kapali and Nazimuddin.

Billy Doctrove is lovingly known as NOT OUT BILLY. He has to be very sure the batsman is out before he raises his finger. He has frustrated many bowlers, as he tends to give the batsmen the benefit of the doubt.

Actually Mushfique could be put up the order to make use of his limited big hitting abilities. He should be able to hold the middle order together quite well, while rotating strike to keep the momentum going. We just need his partner to fire.

This will be more like mental game...Stoping Gyle or Sarwan...and batting sensibly...regardless whoever bat sensibly will go for 300 runs...We need to have a batsman in the middle who will stabilize the batting collapse and will also rotate strikes.

All the islands are beautiful, especially Dominica, Grenada and St. Kitts, people are exceptionally friendly and hospitable and very laid back, no one is in a hurry, even though most of the population is on low income or no income, they are happy, go lucky people who are mostly of mixed races.

Hope that a few thousand people attend these 2 matches. Not much population in these small islands. It should be a cracker of a match if no rain interruptions. ICC was warned by the WICB that July and august is the rainy season.

The Big Picture
The current strife in West Indies cricket could yet again benefit Bangladesh. They've tasted more success in ODIs, with upset wins against Test-playing nations in major tournaments, and start clear favourites as they take on a makeshift West Indies team over three games. The 2-0 win in Tests - their greatest achievement to date - should give them the confidence to try and press their superiority. As for the hosts, the feud between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) has shown few signs of abating despite the strike being called off. And with many members of the current ODI squad also featuring in the provisional squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, the incentive to make a mark in the ODI circuit has never been greater.

Bangladesh have had a mixed 2009, winning three ODIs - including one against Sri Lanka - and losing as many. Their two failures against Zimbabwe will be a cause for worry though some of their players seem to have recovered form in the Test series - witness Tamim Iqbal's century in St Vincent, Mahmudullah's sensational debut and Mushfiqur Rahim's consistency in the lower order. The biggest plus is the performance of stand-in captain Shakib Al Hasan, who's been outstanding in both forms of the game, but Mohammad Ashraful's appalling run will be under serious scrutiny.

West Indies will field an outfit more experienced in ODIs than Tests and should anyway be inspired to avenge their recent defeats. There were quite a few positives for the second-string team - it managed a significant first-innings lead in St Vincent and could have levelled the series in Kingstown after Bangladesh were reeling at 67 for 4 in chase of 215. Dave Bernard shone with three half-centuries, while fast bowlers Darren Sammy and Kemar Roach showed they were deserving of a place even in a full-strength squad. While spinners won Bangladesh the rubber, West Indies relied heavily on their pace-attack, and with the pitch in Dominica expected to be conducive to seam bowling, the hosts should be able to compete better.

Form Guide
(last five matches, most recent first)

Watch out for...
Shakib Al Hasan: Currently ranked as the No.1 allrounder in world cricket, Shakib has had an excellent year in ODI cricket. He is Bangladesh's highest run-getter in 2009, averaging 55.75 and is their second-highest wicket-taker with 11 at a staggering average of 10.81. Standing in for an injured Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib led by example in the Tests, capturing 13 wickets in all and scoring an unbeaten 96 in the four-wicket win in Kingstown.

Darren Sammy: The West Indies vice-captain is among the most experienced in the current team in the shorter version of the game, but hasn't done justice to his talent. With 12 wickets at 56.41 and a batting average of 15.91, Sammy was a completely different player in the Test series with two five-fors. However, he threw his wicket away at a crucial time in the second Test and needs to do more to prove his worth as a batsman.

Team news

West Indies have included six new faces for the first two ODIs from the Test squad: Openers Devon Smith and Kieran Powell, legspinner Rawl Lewis, wicketkeepers Andre Fletcher and Devon Thomas and fast bowler Gavin Tonge. Smith could open the batting with Powell or Dale Richards, while fast bowler Pascal, who averages 18.50 with the ball in List A games, could take partner Roach in the pace attack in place of the left out Tino Best.
West Indies (possible): 1 Devon Smith, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Dale Richards, Travis Dowlin, 5 Floyd Reifer (capt), 6 Dave Bernard, 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Andre Fletcher (wk), 9 Nikita Miller/ Rawl Lewis, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Nelon Pascal

Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Mehrab Hossain jnr, 3 Raqibul Hasan, 4 Mohammad Ashraful, 5 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 6 Junaid Siddique, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim, 8 Mahmudullah, 9 Mahbubul Alam, 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Syed Rasel

Pitch and conditions

Richard LeTang, the head curator at Windsor Park, the venue for the first two ODIs, has said the pitch will provide "serious pace and bounce" though a score of around 300 would be chaseable.

Stats and Trivia

The Windsor Park stadium has played host to just two first-class games and will become the 173rd venue to host an ODI

Bangladesh have averaged 20.44 per wicket in their six ODIs this year. In the 198 ODIs they've played, they average 21.56 per wicket with 44 wins and 152 losses.

The West Indies squad - with six players yet to make their debuts in ODIs - together has played 106 ODIs, while Mohammad Ashraful has played 139.

"I'm looking forward to the one-dayers. What I'd like to see is a hard, pacy, bouncy wicket."
John Dyson, the West Indies coach, doesn't want the spinners to dominate again.

"(Dyson) is going to get exactly what he asked for, it's going to give you some serious pace and bounce. The spinners will have a hard time."
Richard LeTang, the head curator at Windsor Park, answers Dyson's call.

"They (WICB) are the boss playing hardball."
Chris Gayle on not being picked in the ODI squad despite calling off the strike.

1. First Country to organise ICC champion trophy.
2. 1st country to whitewash WI in WI.
3. 1st international team to play at Windsor Park, the venue for the first two ODIs
4. 1st team to play daynight test match.

i think it wont be bad idea, to play him in lower order. His hard hitting ability can be useful there. Junaed's ODI record is not favoring him that much to be in the squad. I think mehrab jr should open with tamim. nayeem should play instead of junaed. or nayeem can replace razzaq.

i think BCB will play 4 spinner: sakib-nayeem-mahmudullah-razzaq
2 pacer-- rubel, rasel/najmul
most probably junaed will be missing out from main squad

if ashraful fails in the first match, junaed or imrul should replace him. no more free ride for ashraful

move up naeem to first down because we haven't exposed to any of naeem's batting abilities yet

I'll risk looking like a fool and make the prediction of a great and CONSISTENT series from Mohammed Ashraful. I hope the team management and Siddons is doing their bests to support him in these difficult times. I really felt bad for him after I read his "Lojja lage" comment on Prothom-Alo when Utpal Shuvro asked him why he was sitting alone and not with the rest of the team.

It will be the easy thing to do to bash him like most fans and the media at this point. Like it was easy to worship him when he made those huge scores relying solely on luck. Truth is, this guy has tremendous talent; but his downfall has been his lack of emotional intelligence. Hopefully these adversities he's facing now will help him overcome that barrier and make him th eplayer we all know he has the capabiluty of becoming.
Meanwhile, I hope the fans, media and coaches don't abandon him. In the end. it's in our own interest not to do to Ashraful what we did to Habibul Bashar ;)

our spinners are actually slow left/right arm bowlers, with the exception of maybe Shakib. So it really doent matter which pitch they play on, the spinners will give the Windies a hard time.

point #2, they wont be bowling on a 3rd/4th day pitch.
and apart from the 2nd test, how often have u seen Riad turn the ball enough to trouble the batsmen?
I am not saying they are bad bowlers, they bowl fantasticly fantastic :P. but are not affected much by conditions. Look at rafiq, he hardly had any turn, but was ruling the cricket world with his armers, and accuracy

It is hurricane season in the islands, poor BD to have rain interrupted matches, I guess that there were no other window in the FTP to slot them in. If it is a curtailed match, then it becomes dicey for the team batting first.

Btw, anyone read the ashraful article on Prothom Alo today?? I have a feeling Ash will come back like a tiger in the ODI series, at least i hope so :(

I think that Ashraful is suffering from severe depression after losing the Irish match in the T20/20, and then the way the fans blasted him, then the captaincy was taken away from him in a very embarrassing manner. This whole episode has had a terrible effect on his well being and as such, he even seem to forget how to hold a bat. There are also people who self destruct and I am beginning to believe that Ash is one of them.

I think that BCB should help him to sort out his issues, let him have some time out from National duty, and try to reinvent himself. Also, I feel that he should continue batting in his own natural style, I feel that Siddons is tinkering with his batting too much. BCB shold not allow a young and talented player like Ash to fall by the wayside, he still has many more years of cricket to give to BD.

Has anyone ever thought that Ash may be having an eye problem and cannot see the ball properly?

depression may be the case, the main belief in BD cricket is " if we are to win games against the G8 ash MUST score big"
I know its not always the case, but people believe that. And thats why every failure adds up to Ash's pressure. He takes way too much pressure on himself, and the failures hit him way too hard.[this goes for fans like meself] I think if he doesnt kick arse in the ODI series/Zim, he should take a voluntary break from cricket, let him sort things out, and then come back.
We all know, he is the best batsman in BD, probably one of the best in the world on his days, so we need him back, BCB should do something for this lad.
Cause when Ash fires, it is the single most pleasing thing to my eye[in cricket, excluding Wins :P]:flag:

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the 1st ODI between Bangladesh and West Indies.
The ground was hit by early morning showers but nothing to worry, the cloud cover has cleared since then and play will start on time.
The strike has ended, is what we hear but the West Indies board has decided to continue with a second string squad and that gives Bangladesh the upper hand more
Richard LeTang, the head curator at Windsor Park has promised pace and bounce, lets wait and see...
