Bangladesh expected in Bulawayo on Thursday

Sports Reporter

THE Bangladesh national cricket team is expected in Bulawayo at midday tomorrow for a five one-day series against Zimbabwe.
Yesterday Queens Sports Club, the traditional cricket venue in Bulawayo was abuzz with activity with workmen putting final touches to the infrastructure while at the nets and pitch, players went about their business as usual.
The magnificent grandstands on the southern and northern ends got a facelift with a new paint coating leaving the place looking sparklingly clean. There was the smell of wet paint all around the facility with scores of men in overalls doing several different chores as they went about giving the facility a facelift it so badly needed.
Coach Walter Chawaguta for a long spell let the boys work in the nets perfecting their bowling and batting and most of them looked ready for the challenge that lies ahead in the next fortnight when Bulawayo will be under the spotlight.
It will be a series of pride at stake for the two lowly ranked teams in the ICC rankings. Either will be eager to clinch the series to improve on international standings.
Zimbabwe will be eager to show to the world that development efforts following the withdrawal of 15 top players four years ago, have been on course and promising to bear fruit soon.
Zimbabwe has a sprinkling of good young players with different good attributes that should make for a good team for the future.
Rarely does a tour come Bulawayo’s way and all the matches played here from day one to the last without Harare being considered.
The atmosphere at Queens Sports Club was workmanlike with administrators squeezed for time in their day’s schedule.
Administration staff from Zimbabwe Cricket in Harare has descended on the city as have selectors led by Alistair Campbell who later held a meeting attended by coach Chawaguta, captain Prosper Utseya and other selection committee members.
They were all there including provincial and franchise managers Stan Staddon, Joshua Paul and Victor Mhlanga.
All that was written on their faces was eagerness to have the games started and running smoothly. But all this hinges on good preparatory work.
Shingai Rhuhwaya, a senior communications manager with ZC, was yesterday optimistic that all would be ready come weekend. She said no stone would be left unturned in their quest to have a good series and expressed hope that all the good work would be translated into a win by the home side.
“We expect Bangladesh in the country on Thursday (tomorrow). They should be touching down at Joshua Mqabuko International Airport at 12.30pm.
“The Zimbabwe team is already here and they have been working out at Queens Sports Club. The umpires should be arriving on Friday. Guys down here have put a lot of time and effort in ensuring that Queens Sports Club will be in tip-top condition when the games start,” said Rhuhwaya.
There is so much excitement in the city about the series which will curtain-raise for the launch of franchise cricket.

Seems that the boys will have no net session before the first warm up game. I cant believe that they will be arriving in Bulawayo Thursday midday, playing a warmup game on Friday and then the first ODI on Saturday. This is ridiculous and I am amazed that BCB did not take this long travel from the West Indies to Bulawayo into consideration and to delay the 1st ODI until Sunday instead of Saturday. These boys will be so fatigued that they will not have time to recover. The same thing happened when they travelled to Pakistan. In that first ODI, I noticed that they were rubbing their eyes and yawning. Did'nt Siddons even think about this? After all, he is the coach and should know what is best for his boys.

Huge disadvantage for BD, whereas the Zim team is at home and practising at the nets.

The third ODI was the first time I have seen Ash doing off-sin. I thought he was a legspinner though.

BUt if he can do both why doesnt he mix up the bowling in an over among arm-balls, off-break, and leg-break, like how Mendis does it

Hi Zimfan:

I have been waiting for you. In 2005, when our team went to Zimbabwe, they got lost, they did not have any contacts even with BCB because of political turmoils, upheavals and sanctions.
Even Cricinfo could not get their crew to Zimbabwe to stream the game because of logistical problems.
How is everything now?

Hey FagunerAhun

Things in Zimbabwe are getting better now but there are still a fair few issues.

But in terms of coverage of this series it will defintly be better than in 2005 as Cricinfo have confiremed to me that there will be live coverage and Ten Sports and Supersport will be braodcasting all 5 ODI's

However in terms of communication from inside Zimbabwe in terms of the Zimbabwe camp there has been little given out. For example sources tell us that leading star Brendan Taylor has met up with the Sqaud in Bulawayo but there has been no confirmation that he has been added to the sqaud, nor has the 15 man sqaud been revelved for the series

There was supposed to be a big event last night where the sqaud for the series was supposed to be announced as well as the new franchise domestic league being launched along with the player of the year awards and there has been no press release about what happend.

In regards to tomorrow's match i dont expect to be able to get updates apart from your own Tigercricket.

<INS>MARK Vermeulen is set to make a return to the international fold after being named in Zimbabwe's one-day squad for the five-match series against Bangladesh at home next month. His selection comes just months after being acquitted of an arson attack which destroyed Zimbabwe's cricket academy in 2006.</INS>
<INS></INS><INS><o:p></o:p></INS>
<INS>The arson attack could have cost Vermeulen up to 25 years in prison.

He admitted to starting the fire but was acquitted on the grounds that he had been suffering psychiatric problems, including partial complex epilepsy, ever since he suffered a head injury during an ODI against India in 2004.

He made his first steps towards an international comeback when he was named in the A squad for the tour of Namibia in February. He last played an international match in 2004.<o:p></o:p></INS>
<INS>Another player making a return to the 19-man squad is the wicketkeeper-batsman Charles Coventry, who last played for Zimbabwe in 2006.

There was no place, however, for the former captain Tatenda Taibu, who has been suspended for ten games by the board, despite being acquitted of assaulting Esther Lupepe, Zimbabwe Cricket's general finance manager.

Another player dropped from the squad which faced Kenya earlier this year is Malcolm Waller.<o:p></o:p></INS>
<INS>"An internal disciplinary team made up of three retired magistrates however found him [Taibu] guilty," Zimbabwe Cricket spokesman Shingai Rhuhwaya told Associated Press.

"He has therefore been suspended for 10 matches. He will however be eligible to play for his province."<o:p></o:p></INS>
<INS>The two new faces in the squad are the Mashonaland right-arm seamers Trevor Garwe and Admire Manyumwa. There are also recalls for batsman Chamu Chibhabha and offspinner Timycen Maruma.<o:p></o:p></INS>

my advice to BD boys-------- dont make him mad, dont sledge, give him some free 4, dont appeal too much(specially mushfiq should stop chirping), when u meet vermulein say salam, offer him some bengali food and in a polite way, at the end of the game, invite him to come to BD to fight with hasina and khaleda(in a friendly way)

I'm thinking the opposite wiseshah bro..remember Zimbabwe is our rivals and they are the team closest to us in terms of ranks..let's make Vermuelen as mad as possible when he's on the crease..Mushfiq should be chirping like anything on this tour..remember Ray Price sledging Mushfiq at the end of the 3rd ODI? I want Mushfiq to be chirping him out too..Heck all the players should be chirping!!! It'll make the game a lot spicier!!

Hi Zimfan:

Thanks for the feedback in a timely manner.
How is you people's response to and curosity about this upcoming series?
How is the media coverage of this series? I believe you do not have a free press yet.
I am looking forward to hearing more from you soon.

Till then, you take care.

Taylor and Waller in the national squad, warm up match cancelled

Posted by brmtaylor.com admin on August 07, 2009
Thank you to our friend Enock Muchinjo from the Zimbabwe Independent for this information.
The warm-up match at Bulawayo Athletic Club has been cancelled. The reason for the cancellation is believed to be because the Bangladesh kit is yet to arrive - whther this will affect the ODI series remains to be seen, there are still 2 days before the 1st ODI.
Meanwhile, Brendan Taylor and Malcolm Waller have been brought into the 15 man squad. The most notable omissions are Chris Mpofu and Keith Dabengwa. As expected, Charles Coventry and Mark Vermeulen both made the squad also.
Zimbabwe national squad: Prosper Utseya (captain), Hamilton Masakadza, Mark Vermeulen, Brendan Taylor, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Sean Williams, Elton Chigumbura, Charles Coventry, Vusi Sibanda, Chamu Chibhabha, Malcolm Waller, Ray Price, Tawanda Mupariwa, Graeme Cremer, Ed Rainsford.
The Zimbabwe A team that was due to play the Bangladeshi's, as expected, would have also featured Brendan Taylor. Tatenda Taibu, out of the national squad due to disciplinary reasons, would have captained Zimbabwe A.
Zimbabwe A vs Bangladeshi's: Tatenda Taibu (captain), Brendan Taylor, Chamu Chibhabha, Friday Kasteni, Bothwell Chapungu, Forster Mutizwa, Timycen Maruma, Chris Mpofu, Shingi Masakadza, Admire Manyumwa, Natsai Mushangwe, Tafadzwa Kamungozi (12th man), Trevor Garwe (13th man).

Oh God...How come a international team left their kits in airport. What the team manager doing?

When you have multiple transit in multiple airports, there is always a potential risk of leaving your luggage’s behind. Why don’t you make your schedule having this in your mind? Typical casual attitude and very disappointing.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

Yeah, blame very much goes to BCB. They should have kept in mind time it takes to travel from Caribbean to Zimbabwe and should have asked for few more days break in between two series.

I wrote the same. Poor planning by BCB, I wonder if they have brains. After looking at the map of the world, and with three stopovers and distance involved, An ordinary Joe Blow would have figured out that it will take about 4 days to reach your destination with so many stopovers.
They had to fly from St Kitts to maybe Barbados, then to London, hours of time spent here, then to Dubai, time spent to catch another plane, then about another 8 hours of flying to Zim, then to Bulawayo, also in the change over, luggage gets left behind. Taken all this into consideration, the series should not have started until the 10th, the boys should have been given 2 full days of just light exercise and net practice, I hope BCB has learnt a bit from this and dont put the boys through this hassle of long travel, and then give them no time to recover.

Convincing win from ZIM, total one-sided match really.

Hope it will bring our players back to the reality and realize what tough fight is ahead. This loss can work in our favor in that way.

I am so tempted to say 'So it begins' :) but we had better warm up than they did. All of us faced a ball

Even if we do get a wake-up call after this match, it won't matter unless our fast-bowlers fail to improve their performance. Mash really left a gaping void which has yet to be filled. Losing Razzak was also a big blow because Sakib usually bowls better in tests compared to ODIs. Sakib-Razzak is best effective when they bowl in tandem in the ODIs, Sakib ties them down while Razzak takes the wicket but now we have Enamul-Sakib who are both better at taking wickets in the tests compared to ODI's. On top of all these Zimbawe pitches are not gonna support our spinners that much so our bowling line-up really isn't looking too good atm.

I really want Zimbabwe to come back to their glory days (not expense of BD, btw). Howevre, this win is making me happy for them that they get something to smile about without us being harassed in our pants as it's just a practice match. I want wins in the series all the way, but want real competitiveness from Zim as a sign of their return to their golden era. And with what happened today, I don't wanna see my wish of winning series (which refers to Zim as underdogs) come back at me as a boomerang. So watch out Baghroshaboks, preys are not that easy this time round.....are dhur, inspiration-er kheta puri....oi halain in Zim, oikhane bhalo na kheile deshe ashle Ostrich-er posa Dim dia kolla fadaya dimu.

Its still a practice match,, probably the players are not over the jet lag yet. But Zimbabwe did and will play with vengence and won as they should.

Lets not think of Bangladesh team as something we are really not. I mean as much as some of you may think we have a world-class team,, we really dont. And especially without our main bowlers ( Mashrafee/Razzaque) we have to work extra-extra hard to come top of any quality side. There is no way players like Zunaid, Nazmul, Imrul will make any other teams in the world. Players like Ashraful/Raqibul are hit or miss,,, mostly miss actually. Despite that, I still think we can beat or equal Zimbabwe due to our "talent" base...

So, lets be realistic, without our main strike bowlers, with an exedous and retirement of 8 national team players and a younger team of inexperienced players,,,,how do we rank against a side that has been playing together for 4 years, coming back from a long domestic cricket,, been under a new passionate coach and knows Bangladesh team the bes and has only one solid chance to ge back to international cricket by beating Bangladesht?

Jet lag? C'mom..stop giving excuse for bad performance by the BD. This is what we are. Accept this.
It does not matter if we had couple of our good players not played in this match, that does not speak much for the rest of the team either.

Get over it, we suck.
It really does not matter if it's a warm up match. we need to win all the matched.

wow..just wow..after losing a PRACTICE MATCH your saying we'll lose 0-5? Gee..didn't you say that this game does not matter and you don't care what the result is..and now this? These players just landed after an 8 hr trip yesterday and on top of that lost their kits..let these players settle down and then we'll expect better from this team..Like I said it will most probably be 3-2 us or 2-3 them

0-5 - hahaha

No just kidding.. As I said earlier this is just a warm up match. If I were the coach I would tell them just take it easy and get yourself warmed up from the long journey you had, no over stretch of your arms, legs, not looking for a half century, let alone century from anyone, no 5 wickets haul - save these for the real matches. I bet Siddons did exactly the same and everyone faced a ball.. who knows prob everyone bowled one or two overs!

ya we suck..even though we won a recent series against West Indies but omg ya i forgot that was a 2nd string team so damn that doesn't mean much right? Quit whining man and if we lose 2-3 or more against Zim then I can understand but after a practice match? Come on

Call me crazy, but I suspect the entire team read Zeeshan's strategies before they went to bed! This is nothing but deception before the war starts on Sunday. As Sun Tzu also said, " Pretend inferiority, to encourage his arrogance ". Go get Munshi !

Butt kick koto procsar of ki ki they showed us all.

We don't know about the pitch condition. However in general term in ODI matches, 180 is not a good score to create any pressure to the opponent. Also if Enamul can score 37 runs with a SR of 77 (the highest amoung all BD batsman) without scoring a single 4 or 6, that tells me, the wicket cannot be that bad for batsman.

I don't worry that much about our bowling in general in this match. When you score 180 to defend, basically there is not much to defend. As ususal, I am more worried about our batting. If we want to win the series, we need to target a score of 270+ to create some pressure to the opponents. We cannot always expect that our bowlers will do miracle and win us games after games by booking opponents below 200. That is not going to happen and that is not fair to our bowlers.

I think there's some mistakes in the scorecard. No 4s from batsmen 5-11. I don't believe it.

its a bad idea to havev back to back tour with not a lot of rest. This is streching our players to the max. We needed at least a week to climatise!

The only positive from this match is this was a practice match. However I am not surprised at the result. True we have comprehensively won against a second string WI side, but in the yardstick of cricketing ability, metal fortitude, temperament, talent, unit cohesion and team spirit, the current Zimbabwe is way above the current WI side or any other previous ZIM side that we have faced after 2005. However, the factor that makes a ZIM series always a challenging hurdle for us is the doggedness of the Zimbabweans to prove that they are a better team than BD. This doggedness was born after the strike of the white player which on paper put Zimbabwe below BD in ranking, and since then this fierce feeling of doggedness has been present in the heart of every Zimbabwean player. Therefore whenever they play against BD, they attack like a hungry lion and we never win against them unless we bring our A game.

We still have a day to ponder over our mistakes, sort out our batting and team strategy and reorganize before the real show begins. Go Tigers!

I guess it is acceptable to some of us as long the boys showed up for the match. Who cares what the outcome of the match was. Who cares if we only lost by 7 wkts. Hey, we fan needs to consider that they traveled for four days. Coming to the match, we knew we were going to lose.
I guess, a competitive game was too much to ask for.

Strangely enough, top three performers from the practice match have been left out of Zim ODI squad - Taibu, Mutizwa, and Manyumwa.

Grameenphone Cup
Bangladesh Vs Zimbabwe
Weary Tigers fall to Zimbabwe A

Sports Reporter- A jaded Bangladesh team suffered a seven-wicket defeat to the Zimbabwe A team in the lone warm-up game on Friday before the five-match ODI series which kicks off tomorrow at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
Middle-order batsman Rokibul Hasan slammed a half-century (55) while vice-captain Mushfiqur Rahim added 33 after the visitors decided to bat first but their efforts were not good enough to put up a descent total on the board as the Tigers were bundled out for 180 in 49.3 overs at the Bulawayo Athletic Club.
After an early hiccup, Forster Mutizwa and captain Tatenda Taibu fashioned the home side's easy victory as Zimbabwe A coasted to the victory target of 181 in 38.1 overs for the loss of only three wickets.
Mutizwa smashed unbeaten 78 while former Zimbabwe skipper and wicketkeeper Taibu, who has been banned for ten matches after an internal Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) hearing found him guilty of an offence, contributed with an unbeaten 66.
Pacer Nazmul Hossain caused the early damage by taking two wickets while Syed Rasel picked up one wicket.
Pacers Rubel Hossain and Mahbubul Alam and left-handed batsman Mehrab Hossain were left out of the lone practice game.
Buoyed by their historic success in West Indies, Shakib Al Hasan's men reached Bulawayo on Thursday after a gruelling 40 hours journey via London, Dubai, Johannesburg and Harare with a mission to carry on their good form despite their five-wicket loss to West Indies in the T20 match in the last match in the Caribbean.
It was however a tough task for the Tigers to come out in the field a day after such an exhausting journey. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) however had somehow settled on such a hectic schedule.
"Yes, it was really a tough task for the boys to come out in the field after such a gruelling travel and that might have affected in their batting. The people concerned should have looked at the schedule. It's inhuman to play cricket the very next day after journeying over 40 hours," said BCB's media committee chairman Jalal Yunus when asked about the schedule.
It was learnt that the players had also faced problem with their kits as the luggage was displaced in the Johannesburg airport and that's why it did not reach on time in Zimbabwe. They received their luggage just before the start of the practice match.
When asked, Jalal Yunus admitted the incident. "Yes, we have informed that the kits did not arrive on time," he said.

I guess we should cut the players some slack... but, Zimbabwe is not a West Indies A team... they are going to capitalize on our mistakes!
