02-18-2009 16:45

The 11th South Asian Games (SAG) is to be held from Jan. 29 to Feb. 8 in 2010 in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

The 39th executive meeting of South Asian Olympic Council (SAOC) held in Nepali capital Kathmandu on Monday night decided the date. Before that, host Bangladesh once decided to organize South Asian Mega sports event on November, 2009. But due to the general elections in Bangladesh, the games were postponed.

The meeting also decided to include eight more games in the 11th edition of SAG. They are badminton, basketball, cricket, judo, volleyball, wrestling, golf and cycling.

Wrestling and golf were selected by host nation Bangladesh. Cricket, basketball and golf were introduced for the first time in SAG.

However, there will be only female events on badminton and cycling for the eight added games.

Cricket will play on 20-20-over format by players aged under 21.

Except Afghanistan, all seven South Asian countries members were present on the meeting.

President of Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan is happy over including more games in SAG . He said to Xinhua on Tuesday, "Judo, wrestling and badminton help Nepal to grab more medals."

Besides the eight added games, another 15 games were decided earlier at the meeting. They are athletics, archery, boxing, football, hockey, handball, kabaddi, karate, swimming, shooting, squash Taekwondo, table tennis, weightlifting and Wushu.

The training already started on January 2 this year and it would continue till the start of the games.

The games will be held in the following probable venues in the city:

Doel is the mascot

Doel (Robin Magpie), the national bird of Bangladesh, has been chosen as the figure of the mascot.

Mahmud Islam, a former student of Dhaka University Art Institute, designed the mascot.

You need aggression to get gold medals. Doel don't have aggression. Bd participants don't get golds. 2 and 2 makes 5.

I would have thought something in the line of Tigers.

What do you want? a gokhra shap or something for mascot. Who told you Doel don't have aggression? They chase after much bigger kauua's .

Amazing how BCCI is treating Olympic Association of their own country!

BCCI may not send team for South Asian Games (http://www.hindustantimes.com/News-Feed/cricketnews/BCCI-may-not-send-team-for-South-Asian-Games/Article1-478578.aspx)

The Indian Olympic Association's ambition to send a cricket team to take part in a Twenty20 tournament that is part of the South Asian Games is set to go unfulfilled as the Board of Control for Cricket in India has no interest in pursuing the matter.

The South Asian Games will be held in Dhaka from January 29 to February 9, 2010.

“There is no proposal to send a team to the South Asian Games,” N Srinivasan, secretary of the BCCI told the Hindustan Times.

The BCCI, incidentally, had not replied to a proposal to send a team even to the Asian Games in Guangzhou next year.

In 1998, a second-string team was sent to the Commonwealth Games and performed well below expectations, even as several key players took part in a series against Pakistan in Toronto.

Randhir Singh, secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association, first wrote to Srinivasan on September 23 this year and received no response.

Following this, PM Narayanan of the IOA has sent several reminders, via email and fax, none of which have been replied to.

“Once we were notified that cricket was included, we had written to the BCCI,” Randhir Singh told Hindustan Times. “We are still awaiting a response.”

As per regulations, the team for the South Asian Games would have to comprise players who were under the age of 21 as on January 28, 2010.

However, India’s best young cricketers will be busy at the time, defending their under-19 title at the World Cup in New Zealand in January 2010.

U/19 teams won't make it back from NZ by the time SAG starts. That means no U/19 players from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sr Lanka, India, or Afghanistan.

Sorry for being the *matbor* :P, but Sharmin actually scored 398/400, and then the rest in shoot off. In order to win olympic gold medal, one must score 400/400 and then do well in the shoot off. But 398 is a very very impressive score, meaning she hit the bulls eye of a 4inch radius target, from 10m, 38/40 times. Incredible.

Yeah, saw a bit of that hockey match during my lunch break.
It was funny to watch though.
There was a goal in every other minute. At one point, the Nepalese players were just kicking the ball out of the ground rather than passing it on to their own players.

I have seen great goal scored by a Bangladeshi player Zahid Parvez. He drible past 2 to 3 players to score that goal. If you managed to watch it in any other channel you will remember it for a long time.

surprised by the afgans !

the Indian hockey team seems to be the same one that won the junior asia cup in 2008, the senior team is busy preparing for the hockey world cup to be held in India next month.

not a bad performance from the BD team to hold these guys to a draw.

The '93 SAG was the first I had watched/followed live and ever since then our performance took a nose dive. So much so that in the last few occasions we had struggled to compete with Nepal, often finding ourselves alarmingly close to the bottom of the table. We suck in the medal-heavy competitions: athletics and swimming. In athletics, we have 2 silvers and 2 bronze...that's pathetic. In swimming, we have 2 silvers. This is terrible. Look at Sri Lanka...a nation with one tenth the population, and punching well above its weight. They also have the second highest overall medals tally after India! Sorry to rain on our parade, but the showing in the important sports has been pathetic.

Athletics, swimming and to some extent shooting was a bit disappointing. But football just erased every trace of sorrow from my mind.
The way BD played was unbelievable, anyone who saw the game would agree with me. specially after the disastrous SAFF games, the turnaround was breath taking. BD team played for 90 minutes, the urgency showed by the players were spectacular, the hunger for success was evident. Never have I seen BD team run around with so much purpose. So congrats BD team, I hope our success will finally cross the South Asian border and we will make some major inroads in the Asian scene.
PS: I have been watching football since 1998, so I haven't seen the golden generation play.

We expected atleast 5 more golds from these events before tournament and now we ended up 0. It is more painfull when Pakistan gets ahead of us with winning only one more golds.
