You know guys Know Ash is my Fav Player but now Ash got no where to Hide theres players coming in from all angles gunning for his spot on the Team,

My Argument for Ash used to be, if you replace him were still 8 other bums on the Team who should be dropped before him and was still the best player perfoming 1 in 10 but now thats not the Case, the Talent Level has improved and Once a player gets a spot they cement there position. Rock, Shakib and Tamim have proved that ...

So As you biggest Fan Ash, please Score in this Series ... Your living Paycheck to Pay Check now, Grow a Pair and Man and score!

Beside Shakib, there is not a single player to replace Ash. When Rokibul matures enough, may be, who knows. But there is no one else.

I have no clue what you are talking about.

When we are having hard time finding players to fill in spots in the national team, why are you worrying about Ash?

This is given that a honest assessment of deserving is taken into consideration when selecting players. But the smell in the air is quite different. I'm afraid that very soon we'll see a quota system to get those ICL rejects in.

Thats what I am hearing at the begining of each series for last 5 years.
Before the series, the fan says these kind of stuff, then they take u-turn before the next series.

And I am here to say Ashrful is going to play for next 3 years (or more) regardless how much he scores. Furthermore this time if he fails at #3/#4 slot, he will be promoted to #1 slot opening with Tamim.

what's the point of opening up official ashraful thread, i thought the point of the official ashraful thread was you can write anything you want about ashraful, so that we don't have numerous thread about him. yet the person who opened that official thread, goes on and opens more ashraful thread.

I hate the Official threads...I dont want to read through 8 pages of comments from 2004 to understand the topic of discussion. Everybody needs to stop always pointing to those "official threads"...no1 looks at them. The reason behind those were because too many young kids in here opening unnecessary threads. But some threads are necessary...like this one! And now for my two cents on this topic...

Absolutely agree! There aren't more sure spots left in the Nat team anymore. With ICL players leaving, we've expanded into a bigger pool of core players. Before, if we dropped someone, we had to look to the Tushar Imrans or the Javed Omars of the world and there were never a chance of them succeeding! Hence, the SN's or the ASH's of the world always clawed back in. Now we have plenty of veteran (ICLers) to look to as well as bunch of young guns (the next generation BD cricketers) looking for opportunities. Guys like Shorwardi Shuvo, Shamsur Rahman, Mithun Ali are not even considered due to lack of space.

Any string of failures in the current roster could bring about fatal lifelong exit from the Nat team. These new guys or the ICLer are definite candidates to perform if given a chance which could be deadly for some present guys.

Immediate Risk in Order of Danger:
1) Rock. Too many possible Middle order alternatives - SN, AFTAB, ALOK, SHAMSUR
2) Naeem. Alternatives for Spin Allrounder - Shorwardi, Alok
3) ASH - Same as Rock's list. But Rock is higher on Hit list.
4) Riyad - Alternative Batting Allrounder - Alok, Shorwardi
5) RBX - Alternative Bowling partner for Mash - Rasel, Shahadat

Long Term Risk:
1) Mushy - WK Alternatives - Mithun, Dhiman, shagir
2) Junaed - Opening alternative - Kayes, SN, Shamsur

NO Risk:
1) Shakib
2) Mash
3) Tamim

^^ i like it.. but i think J should be in immediate list with Aftab being an opening option too (along with the 3 you suggested)..

Totally agree... It bugs me to read those "official" threads. If there is current "hot" news on a player or a topic, I'd rather read and discuss it in a new thread.

I'm sorry but Rock being #1 on the hit list? His average is the 2nd highest on the team so I'm pretty sure he's safe for now..

Why this?

Ash did pretty good in the last outings. He scored reasonably well, including that century.

October 22, 2009, 06:05 PM
ash did have scores of 50+, 60+, and 103* in a span of 4 innings. then took his guard off. the flat pitches in bulawayo, he really should have scored more runs.

he needs to hit one more hundred this series, with hopefully a couple of 50s to boot. otherwise, consistently scoring 30-40 at least 4 times out of 5 will suffice.

as always, fingers crossed. but nowadays we have genuine batters in tamim, sakib, even Rock to keep ash's eye sore's out of view.

If the cat has 9 lives, Ash has 99^99. He won't be done even if he averages 25 in this series.

IMO, it's not only Ash, every1 is in trouble unless ur names are Shakib, Mash or Tamim. Too many possible guys in every position waiting for opportunities. Frankly speaking, Ash is doing decent lately but he needs to do more @ higher consistency to get into the small club of "NO Risk".

Yes, ASH should score all the runs, only becoming the player with most runs is insufficient for him.

Come on bro, BD team without ASH? its like india team without tendulkar. No matter how badly ash performs, we all know that one of his magic inning is right around the corner, and that might be the one which will win us WC11 ;) so, do you want to replace our magic man with any other human being?

Not necessarily. The reason these comments are always made before a series, then withdrawn, is because Ash somehow always manages to score in that ONE innings - out of however many - ensuring his fans' love, and his place in the team is intact. I can safely assume he will score that one big score this series, and perhaps some more, seeing as he'll play in home conditions.

Guys,Ash is a serious talent i saw his debut game against Sri Lanka in 2001,When Murali was on the form of his life,Even Indian batsmen struggled to cope with his variations,But this man came and played him with ease.I watched his entire shots, Still i can't erase that innings out of my mind.I have seen Sachin struggling against Murali,But never saw Ash struggling against the highest wicket taker till now.Let's give him some encouragement,I hope he will play to his potential.

When Nafees and Alok start to make their way to the national squad after December, then i think Ash, Junaid and Rock will start to face some competition.

Guys...he's scored pretty well by any comparisons over the past two series. I don't think he'll go even if he gets 10 runs in 5 matches.

On the other hand tho, I hope he takes his freebies when he gets it against the Zimbabwe bowlers...their batsmen are good, but bowlers got no chance if he gets going. So stop predicting doomsday, and start thinking if he's actually going to get 2 centuries this series...I predict he'll score over 300 in the series.

The real would be when we resume playing against more famed opponents..then Ash will shine where others will struggle. He's the 2nd most important batsman behind tamim (yes, in front of Sakib).

Remind me of my post if anyone other than Tamim or Sakib wins more matches for us against stronger teams than M. Ashraful in the coming year.

I also saw that game in person, for a kid, he did marvellous against the two best bowlers in the world. many times I hope that we see this precocious kid batting so fearlessly again.

You are right, he did mention once that he loves to bowl, but he is in the team as a batsman, he started out as a bowler, but demonstrated fine skills with the bat.
No one can doubt that it is his batting that made BD win against Australia and South Africa, the two top teams in the world, but against SA it was also a joint team effort in the bowling and fielding. The win against India in the World cup was a joint effort by the BD team, moreso Mash and at that time the 3 U/19 players who all made their half centuries.

Let's not lose focus due to the title calling out "ASH'. My comement were not exclusive to him. Every1 must perform. We've finally turned the corner in BD cricket. You continually have to perform in every series otherwise you'll be head-hunted. 1 or 2 performance no longer cements your postion in team.

ROCK is Number one in hit list. Let's go back to the stats of Murad. Filtered by regular batsmen.

To the untrained eye, he did have a nice average of 45.75. But the facts are:

1) It was a batting paradise where everyone and their mother scored 300+ totals, and many great individual performances and centuries - not to mention the highest in an ODI.
2) He had the worst strike rate 76.56 in this batting paradise. He had trouble connecting properly and finding gaps.

I could care less if he has the worst strike rate..wouldn't you rather have a guy scoring a 50 with a strike rate of 65 rather then a guy scoring 20 with a strikerate of 100? He has the 2nd best average on the team..can't deny that fact..i mean without the rock there would be a lot less stability in the team then they have now..

this also just proves how people just love to get after ash..he's done well the last 2 series..obviously he has 2 perform..he's 1 of our key players..we've known that fact for a while..he should be able to perform again..

In a professional competitive market indispensability is the key to sustain.
Ash has not reached the point to be dispensed, actually he is in a better position after the last series.

Agreed with all of you! But! Ashraful is our STAR and the world knows BD by Ashraful. He is no leader, no brain surgeon, but one of the most talented batsman the world has ever produced. Let him play the STAR role and give us those magic moment once in a while. That's good enough until a new Ashraful comes along. Its like Beckham in Soccer, its his STAR power that steals the show and bring him the big bucks!

Each series appears to be the series which will be Ash's last. But that never happened.

Believe in him or not, Ash is the ONE. He will continue to dazzle us once a year. Perhaps, his sparkling once a year affairs are worth the hassle after all, to the selectors at least.

But right now he's in a good enough position that calls for his exclusion, seems to be purely out of reflex.

You cant remove Ash from the squad, because we still need to see his Magic in bowling.

ashraful isn't doing so bad atm in ODIs, however i do think his position in the team has somewhat changed. in the past the team was built around him and for good reason, but nowadays we also have tamim, shakib, mash and raqibul and the team should be built around these players rather than ashraful.

ashraful is further in his development than most of the team because he's older, been there many more years and has played alot more matches. basically ashraful should be starting to get to his best unless he is a late bloomer. the standard has now improved, the best guys are now as or more consistent than ashraful has been over the last 3 years (averaging 29), those guys will be expected to do much better than what ash currently is when they get to his age and they get that experience.

He had trouble connecting properly and finding gaps.

rock plays the anchor role in the team due to his limitations. a SR of 76 is not terrible, even on a flat pitch. sure its not good, but that is his role, and we need a batsman of his calibre to play that role (unlike a javed omar or habibul bashar).

one of the big critique's of his game is that he is not a stroke maker and cannot find the gaps. however, according to my data, he is one of the top 5 batsmen we've ever had in terms of rotating strike and picking up ones, twos, and threes.

in the last zim series, rock scored just 37% of runs from boundaries, compared to 46% for ashraful and 54% for shakib (our best accumulator of runs).

rock had a singles strike rate (SSR) - which is runs scored exclusively from running between the wicket per 100 balls faced - of 51.57 for the numbers you've provided.

in contrast, sachin tendulkar, the quintessential batsmen of our time, has a SSR of about 49 when batting in the middle order (his opening SSR is in the low 40s, and for obvious reasons openers tend to have lower SSRs). by contrast, shakib and ash's number's for the series are 70.27 and 47.06, respectively.

so we see that rock actually found gaps better than ash did for the series as a whole, and sakib's numbers were just out of this world (his overall SR was 130).

The debate on the topic of this thread should just be ended after Murad's excellent analysis.

Nayeem Islam is the one whose performance should be watched very closely. Yes, he has not got too many chances, also he has not shown enough evidence when he got his chances so that he can be relied upon as a batsman who can contribute. Let's not hide a batsman in #7 or #8. Give him more chance to show what he is made off. It has been more than one year of Nayeem in the team with an ODI S/R of 58, without a single half-century.

He will be promoted to #2 slot

Ash fans now realized that may be #2 is the real slot for Ashraful and that's why he failed at #3.

Cricman where are you? we want to know is he in or out for SL-Ind Tri-series? OR just as Fazal mentions, one more series never ends with Ash. To hell with the team. We need Ash and that is even in the most important position in the batting line up.

He got 5 chances in #3 position. Averaged 18. Total scored 91, with 63 being highest score. SR of maa go maa 62.

There were six BD players who had a better average than him.

He got 2 wickets. Econ 4.88 in 9 overs of bowling in the entire series. SR of 27 to those who can't play spin.

So what is the verdict? At home, against a weak Zim attack he performed as above.

I'm done with him long ago.. the thing is either you perform or drop out.. he is becoming burden for the team.. not to mention in few occasion he left the team in bad situation when we really needed him to score.. at the end we had to wait for Shkib, Rock, Riyad, Mushy and Naeem to pull it off.. is that what you expect from your specialist batsman? He has done the job occasionally that doesn’t mean we keep him forever.. there are far better players out there can do the job wih ease..

he's no longer the only "matchwinner". shakib and tamim are clearly match winners now, rock is very solid though i wouldn't call him a match winner, mushy is also quite solid now even in one-dayers, naeem i think has the potential to become a match winner with the bat.

i don't think ash should be considered as a core player anymore because players are starting to surpass him and looking at the talent and improved consistency of the players entering the national team i would expect more and more players to pass ash in the next 5 years.

I think Ash has an eye problem, he is not seeing the ball as well as he did, but he will survive. People around the world knows the BD team by the name Ashraful, even in Guyana, if you ask cricket fans to name one player in the BD cricket team, it is Ashraful. Even though Sakib is the tops, I think it will sink in when he plays in Trinidad and Guyana and make a good score, then his name will be on everyone's lips, for now it is Tamim, Mushy and Ashraful.
