View Full Version : Bowling Strategy

I am sure Shakib will have his own bowling strategy, but if I were to manage Bangladesh ODI team in some fantasy league, this would be my strategy:

Five bowlers - Mashrafe, Shakib, Razzak, Naeem, Shafiul.

I would open with my best L&L bowler - Mashrafe, and best spinner - Shakib (since he enjoys bowling with pronounced seam). I would divide Shafiul's overs between middle overs and death overs. Naeem would be my main bowler for middle overs.

I would ask Mashrafe to bowl 8 overs in trot - from 1 to 15 overs, and let him bowl another 2 overs in the middle (but not during death overs). I would let Shakib bowl 5 overs in the beginning, then may be another 2 in middle, but would save at least 3 overs from him for death. Razzak should bowl 2-3 overs during 2nd PP, may be another 5-6 overs in middle, but would save at least 2 overs from him for death. Again, I would save at least 5 overs from Shafi for death, and let Naeem bowl his whole spell during middle overs.

Anyone has any fantasy to share in this regard?

I suggest use your 6th/7th bowler in the middle, so that you have enough option left at the end of the game.

I they plan to use mainly 5 bolwers, still I suggest to use 6th bolers for few overs to have more flexibility at the end.

I will give Shafiul new ball. His outswinger will trouble Cook.

i think BD should go with 3 pacers and two sla that is shuvo and shakib with naeem and riad available if anyone goes wrong.

mash and shafi to open. rubel one change. then shakib shuvo naeem in middle overs. mashrafe finishing his quota before 40. then shafi, rubel in death over with shuvo and shakib

It may be worth to bench one from Aftab and Zunaed, ie to go with only 7 batsmen to make place for one extra bowler. So, there is place for Rubel. But I am reluctant to see Razzak being benched to make place for Shuvo.

now that shuvo is included in the squad, i hope he plays in the first ODI along with razzaq. so there will be three SLA's and two seamers. riyad and naeem can be our 6th and 7th bowler.

Mash share the new ball with Shafiul. Bowl mash for 7-8 overs and shafiul for 5 overs.
bring razzaq in after 10 overs in the pp, share this with mash.
when pp over, continue with razaq with couple overs and share with shakib, who bowls 5 overs on the trott. after razzaq has his spell, bring on the mannn himself SHUVOOO. i want him to bowl a longgg spell, and have a couple of shafiul overs inbetween. bowl naeem if needed, or use mash for couple of overs. let shuvo bowl out completly. last few overs, if calculation is right, we have shakib bowling at death as well as razzaq and two overs from shafiul. PERFECT
but this is only a preset plan. i dont want it to be set in stone, we need flexibility. if one bowler is performing bad, change him. we have handy offspiners in riyad and naeem.

if shuvo dont play, then we will have to use alot of naeem, and riyad for a few overs

More I think of it, more I am inclined to take Rubel as the third pacer. It may back fire big time if we have no option but spinners to accompany Shaif in death overs.

3 pacers + 2 Spinners

Pacers: Mash, Shaf, Rubx
Spin: Sakib, Razzak/Shuvro

Open w/ Mash + Shaf

If things go per plan - bowl Mash for 6 and Shaf for 5

...the remaining : cricket is a complicated game for me to understand enough. That's why we have a captain.

mash, shafi, rubel, shak and shuvo would be my bowlers. possibly bowl mash as the first change to give rubel and shafi a good crack with the new ball (otherwise mash and shafi open). play 7 batsmen, shuvo can bat at #8.

Change of mind - let Shafi-Shak pair to open, and let Shafi-Shak-Rubel trio to handle death overs, with Razzak-Naeem-Shuvo for middle overs.

No Mash till he gains his full fitness back.

My bowling plan

Open
Mash - 5 Overs
Shafi - 3 Overs
First change - Razzak - 5 Overs
Second Change - Shakib - 3 Overs
Third Change (after powerplay) - Naeem - 6 Overs
Riyad - 2/3 overs
Shakib - 4 Overs
Shafi - 4 Overs
Mashrafe - 4/5 Overs (between 35 to 45)
Razzak - 5 Overs (Between 35 to 45)
Shafi - 2/3 Overs (powerplay overs)
Shakib - 3 Overs (powerplay overs)

You can replace Razzak with Shuvo if he gets the nod ahead of Razzak. If all 3 SLA play, I would open with one SLA

Mashrafe - 5 Overs
Razzak - 5 Overs
First change - Shafiul - 6 overs
Second change Shakib - 4 Overs
Shuvo - 8 Overs
Naeem - 4/5 Overs
Riyad - 2/3 overs
Mashrafe - 5 overs
Razzak - 5 overs
Shakib + Shafi - batting powerplay overs.

My 5 bowlers: Mash, Shafiul, Rubel, Shakib and Shuvo

Mash and Shafi opens. I will put two ends just to make it simple:

Odd overs:
Mash (first 6)
Shakib (3 overs)
Shuvo (8 overs)
Mash (2 overs)
Shafiul (3 overs)
Shakib (3 overs)

Even overs:
Shafiul (5 overs)
Rubel (6 overs)
Naeem (3 overs)
Shakib (4 overs)
Riyad (3 overs)
Rubel (2 overs)
Shafiul (2 overs)

Total: Mash 8 overs, Shafiul 10 overs, Rubel 8 overs, Shakib 10 overs, Shuvo 8 overs, Riyad 3 overs, Naeem 3 overs.

My team: Tamim, Imrul, Aftab, Riyad, Shakib, Mushfiq, Naeem, Shuvo, Mashrafee, Shafiul, Rubel.

i just hope sakib uses all his bowling option.
previously we have seen some captain dont utilize all his option, even if they got hammered.

now we have 7 bowler--hope we can use them according to situation.

How will be the pitch? i hope we make it spin friendly, like the way india made for kumble, harbhazan

we have great spin attack--- sakib-razzaq-shuvo-naeem-mahmudullah
plus 2 pacer-- mashrafe, shafiul

if mash fails to comeback properly--i hope rasel replace him in 3rd ODI

I am skeptical with the inclusion of Mash. It would be better for him if he makes his comeback in a Twenty20 or ODI's against the ZImz. He will get thrashed by the English players in the first ODI.

I want two pacers in Shafiul & Rubel in 1st ODI with Shuvo, Shakib, and Razzak SLA attack. If spin doesn't work out well, one of the spinners should make way for Mash.

So, obviously MASH will struggle in the 1st game. But when do you get him started - Zims game is way out there. Can we afford to wait that long.

If I were a selector, I would definitely want to know that he is 110 % fit, and did not give 100% during the warm-up.

I would also get him to bowl against Tamim, Shakib, Mahmud and possibly Mushfiq in the nets and get a "feel" from the 4 batsmen.

But I am not a selector. They will most certainly know more than me.

we have a lot of bowling options in the ODI's. A lot of it depends on Sakib and how he shifts the bowlers.

Hope they bowl smartly like the Indians. I have been watching the India v. SA ODI's and the Indian fast-bowlers were consistently bowling 70-82 mph. They rarely went over the 83 mark. They also bowled a lot of slower deliveries. and thats how they got wickets.

Rubel leakes too many runs in ODI.I want Mash.

I do not know about everyone else, but Mash should bowl his 10 overs before the 35th over mark. He bowls the worst death overs.
Shakib and Razzak/Shuvo should take care of proceedings from 12-35 overs. With help of MashNayeem/Riyad somewhere in between. Then Shafiul should bowl in the death overs with Razzak and Shak.

Dont even think giving ball to Mashrafee. He is not match fit. Its a mistake to bring him so soon.
I dont want to see another KKR incident.

if Shakib's performance is better than Swann with the ball , we have 90% chance to win

I say seal a win in the first match. Then bring in Mash for the second to decide whether he can continue for the third. Rubel is expensive in ODI's. I would have liked a swing bowler like Rasel or whatever in Milon but that is beyond expectation now.

shafiul (6.62) is more expensive than rubel( 6.01) in odi's though shafiul played less.

With Mashrafe ruled out of the 1st ODI and the pitch being spinner friendly, our bowling lineup looks like this. Rubel-Shafiul-Shakib-Razzak-Shuvo + Naeem-Riyad. Looks good! If the English really struggle against spin, then their screwed.
