Zimbabwe won the high scoring encounter against UWI VC XI by 5 runs. Taibu hit a ton while the WI U19 player Brathwiate made 80 but could not seal the win.

One very happy Zimbabwean today :smug:

Good win to start of the tour now hopefully we can win a couple of ODI's and look forward to a test series in Bangladesh next year.

Cremer was fantastic a real star developing there, but the batting needs a lot of work!!

Just seen the highlights. Commentator thought they would get a free-hit off a wide lol. I have to say Zimbabwe dropped some right sitters in the match. But I'm very surprised by the response from the windies. They still had 3 wickets left so you would've thought that they would've at least taken a few more risks. I bet they can't wait for Gayle and Sarwan to come back.

This looks like a resurgent Zimbabwe side. They've got a few former players coming back and helping with the coaching and they've got some decent spinners. Hopefully they can get back to the force they once were.

I think they got 5 ODIs because no test matches are being played.

Hope that Zim shows the world that they are coming back very strongly and they are no walk over for any team. I feel that they have the grit and motivation.

Wish them all the luck to win a few matches.

Not at all surprising that Zimbabwe did great in the T20I. They've revamped their domestic T20 league and that's bearing fruit. I expect them to do well in the ODIs also. Windies, toothless without Edwards/Taylor/Powell/Lawson, cannot depend on their batting alone especially when everyone other than Chandu and Sarwan has issues with slow bowling. Not sure how much Roach, Sammy and Benn can do against Masakadza, Sibanda and Chigumbura in full flow.

ZIM 22-0/8

Tigers_eye
March 4, 2010, 09:35 AM
missing the off stump and given lbw to remove masakadza the danger man. Poor umpiring by the local.

Simon also missed one in favor of WI. so I guess it evens out.

Naimul_Hd
March 4, 2010, 09:47 AM
whats happening with Umpire these days ? arent they paid enough to concentrate more and give good judgement ? If this kind of poor decision continues then its not too far when UDRS will be used to give every LBW decision.

What fielding WI is putting up. over throws, caught on a no ball above the waiste high and throwing it back while batsmen taking 3 runs.

Zim 128/1 31 overs. Sibanda approaching 50. 49* (111) Looks like Imrul was faster.

Around 3 years back asked to give Taibu a citizenship.

he would have been the perfect #3. approaching 50 with better than run a ball.

Zim should take powerplay right after he makes 50. Both players at 50+ perfect opportunity. 35th over going on.

Tiger Manc
March 4, 2010, 12:07 PM
He faced an incredible amount of deliveries. I62 it's ranked as the joint 23rd number of balls faced in a ODI. One guy at the top of the list is Sunil Gavaskar 36* from 174 balls! What was that all about? That's pretty poor even for a Test match!

it was and amazing yorker. went under the bat and sibanda was bowled. sibanda tried to dig out and in doing so his bat hit the ground and bat was broken.

my first impression was the bat was broken when it was hit by the ball. but later i realized it was not. actually the bat broke when the bat hit the ground

chigumbura is not part time, he is a full time pacer. and they also have the junior maskadza a medium pacer. but they also have full time and 4 part time spinners. so these spinners will do the bulk of bowling

Agree wholeheartedly, this team is a joke as I said before. My personal understanding is, Gayle single-handedly refused any high performance senior players to be included just to show his own capacity. Now Shiva is not part of the argument as he is more of a test mode grafter guy.

here is a small comparision of the two squads. no of ODI's and batting average

http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/623/26343867.png

BOLD PLAYERS are known for their batting and expected good average, except Mpofu. non-bold are pure bowlers and are not expected good averages.

only 2 WI players have played 100 matches, zimbabwe have 4 played over 100 matches

only 4 WI players have played 50 matches, zimbabwe have 8 played over 50 matches

only 7 WI players have played 25 matches, zimbabwe have 10 played over 25 matches

only 3 WI players have batting average of 39+, zimbabwe have none

only 3 WI players have batting average of 30+, zimbabwe have 1

only 5 WI players have batting average of 20+, zimbabwe have 7

statistically ZIMBABWE have the edge over WI......

West Indies have bowled 49.5 overs in two hours and 52 minutes, that's 38 minutes sooner than the allotted time. Hence they will come back to bat in 10 minutes - they'll have about 25 minutes of batting before the lunch break. And they will consider themselves favourites going into the chase, after a professional bowling and fielding show.

Zim cricketers believe tide has turned

http://www.timeslive.co.za/sport/cricket/article341536.ece

As much as they may have spoken about the honour of representing their country, the prospect of playing ODIs against Bangladesh and Kenya for the rest of their lives was hardly mouth-watering.

Three years ago they were lucky to get a game against anybody. The domestic game had all but disappeared and cricket had crashed as surely as the country's economy. There was little hope, even among many of the optimists.

But the past 12 months have witnessed a revolution of the most constructive sort and the structure of the game has been rebuilt with astonishing speed and determination.

Now there are five professional domestic franchises, including the previously disregarded regions in the eastern highlands, mid-west and deep south, based on the blueprint from Cricket South Africa.

Each board is independent and financial regulations are stringent, with a "no exceptions" policy from Zimbabwe Cricket regarding requests for funding above the US$750000 provided upfront.

Zimbabwe sceptics will, understandably, raise eyebrows at the brutal frugality of the initiative given the allegations of financial impropriety aimed at ZC managing director Ozias Bvute and chairman Peter Chingoka during the early and mid 2000s. But in the absence of anything concrete, locals have moved on from hearsay and whispers.

"It's time to draw a line in the sand and move forward," says former captain and current cricket committee chairman Alistair Campbell. "How long do people want to carry on about what happened in the past?"

Heath Streak remains the highest profile of those who walked away from the game, having led the "rebel players" back in 2002. He is now the national team bowling coach and as fanatical about Zimbabwe cricket as he ever was.

"For me it's very simple. It's a lot better to be constructive than destructive and positive rather than negative."

Zimbabwe staged its inaugural T20 tournament in the nine days before the national squad departed for a six-match tour of the Caribbean two weeks ago and the final - between the Mountaineers of Hamilton Masakadza and Elton Chigumbura's Mashonaland Eagles - was attended by a crowd of 7000, more than Harare Sports Club has hosted in well over a decade.

Bvute took it as a irrefutable evidence that his passionate campaign to "indigenise" the game was working.

If collective determination swings it, the domestic system will survive and flourish and ZC's stated goal of returning to Test cricket within 12 to 18 months could be attained.

Windies finish on 245/9. They scored 92 runs in the last 10 overs and I feel Zimbabwe have let this one slip through their hands. I always expected a final flourish from windies as they had wickets in hand, but with Chanderpaul gone I felt Zimbabwe could've restricted them to around 230. It's still a gettable total, but I think Windies are favourites.

WI is better than BD and Zim. But their are getting worse where BD and zimbabwe are improving though slowly. It is not BD who will catch up WI but WI itself will catch us by getting worse day by day.

Zimbabwe have decent bowlers. It's a shame their batsman let them down. I felt Zimbabwe could've genuinely won the series here. Chigumbura's got a contract at Northants, I'm not sure if it's for one dayers only or the entire season including first-class cricket. I think a few of our boys deserves contracts as well.
