These are some good stats. Looks like our batting department has kick-started it's development although we failed to improve significantly as a team.

Tamim Iqbal

<table class="engineTable"><tbody><tr class="data1"><td class="left">filtered</td> <td>6</td> <td>629</td> <td class="padAst">151</td> <td>52.41</td> <td>2</td> <td>0</td> <td nowrap="nowrap">-</td> <td class="padDp2" nowrap="nowrap">-</td> <td>0</td> <td>6</td> <td>0</td> <td>

<table class="engineTable"><tbody><tr class="data1"><td>6</td> <td>443</td> <td class="padAst">115</td> <td>44.30</td> <td>1</td> <td>19</td> <td>5/51</td> <td>28.78</td> <td>1</td> <td>7</td> <td>0</td> <td>

<table class="engineTable"><tbody><tr class="data1"><td>6</td> <td>426</td> <td class="padAst">100</td> <td>38.72</td> <td>1</td> <td>28</td> <td>5/62</td> <td>30.85</td> <td>2</td> <td>2</td> <td>0</td> <td>

<table class="engineTable"><tbody><tr class="data1"><td class="left">filtered</td> <td>6</td> <td>473</td> <td class="padAst">101</td> <td>47.30</td> <td>1</td> <td nowrap="nowrap">-</td> <td nowrap="nowrap">-</td> <td class="padDp2" nowrap="nowrap">-</td> <td nowrap="nowrap">-</td> <td>13</td> <td>3</td> <td>
</td></tr></tbody></table>Four of the seven batsmen averaging above 40 is really good sign for our Test cricket. We now need runs from top order batsmen at positions 2, 3 and 4 of the batting order. Ironically, these places are meant to be occupied by the best batsmen of the team. We had a 4 in Raqibul and Zunaid showed today that he can be a 2 after some adjustments to his technique. In that case finding a proper number 3 is our main concern, but with Raqibul's retire we have to find out batsmen for both 3 and 4 positions of our batting order.

Zunaed has shown that he can play long innings, yes, and although most of our Test matches will likely be at home for a while, he may only be a temporary solution unless he fixes his technique against the short ball. His problem is his consistency - his fifties are too sporadic. I think he'll have to work extremely hard to become a long term stay in this team and up his game tremendously.

It's difficult to come out to bat when you're 5 down for not much most of the time. Guys like Mushy, Nayeem and Riyad deserve to bat higher. We need them to bat higher. It doesn't make sense to bring a middle order batsman into the team and make him bat at #8. I think the management is beginning to realize this and we will probably see a middle order packed with these guys by the end of the year. Nayeem has to prove himself, of course.

The concept of playing long innings is lacking among many of our batsmen and I don't quite understand why. It's OK to not score a boundary for several overs in Test cricket. Heck it's OK not to score at all for periods when the bowling is good. Our batsmen take too much pressure upon themselves thinking they have to score at a decent pace, when in reality that isn't Test cricket. It's more about endurance and wearing out the opposition. It's OK to score only 50 when you've batted for 150 deliveries - you don't HAVE to score a hundred within that period of time.

Some of these guys are already good at this and some of them are beginning to get good at it. But we need to value our players for what they are and quit making tail-enders out of good batsmen.

there are 2 dffrnt exmpls, like TI & Mushy.
Both these 2 are showing good consistency with healthy average but they have dffrnt apprch,Tamim is aggressive whereas Mushy is calm & slow.
Sakib is also a quick scorer.
Which means it's not that important to play that many dot balls but play yr natural game.
But still as far as Test bttng is concerned Mushy has the best temperment.

We need a batting clinic for the top 10 batsmen from the NCL and come up with set of batsmen to fill the underperforming slots ASAP. WE also need a solid and dependable bench support for Number 1 through 7.

We're out of luck with the new FTP. Teams won't bother to host us, but we might get some home games once in a while.

We need to revamp the NCL. Make it longer and get rid of the retarded points system. Also, pay the players more. A lot more.

not really sure what to think of junaid now that he's hit a solid 68*. the problem is not so much consistency...he's far more consistent than ash, but his bipolar manner of scoring. single digit scores followed by solid (at least statistically speaking) fifties. if he could just turn the single digits into 20-30 scores like ash can, he would average about 30 as well.

our test lineup is starting to shape up, half of the lineup at least. the Big 5 look to average 30-40 all of them (four of them already average 30+, only naeem is a newbie still). if Junaid can support the Big 5, we really only need to find a keeper-batsman, or just a keeper-slogger and that will be 7 solid batters.

we just need to focus on equalizing with NZ and full strength WI within the next 4-5 years - becoming a top test nation will take decades, and instead of focusing on that, we should focus on how to get there in the short term.

as i see it, to be a legitimate test side, you need at least a few batsman who can score massively (150+ runs) on any given day and be consistent at the same time. then you need the rest to be merely capable (i.e consistent guys who can all score tons, but maybe not double tons). after all kallis never scored 200 but he's one of the finest bats ever. you also need a solid keeper, preferably one who can bat, and you need one quality spinner, and two wicket taking pacers, preferably one with some pace.

so what do we have, and what are we still looking for?

Batsmen Capable of Scoring Massively:

Tamim - already done it, 151 vs India, CONSISTENT batter
Mushfiq - has a 101 vs India, but bats so low he doesn't have the chance to score big, CONSISTENT

Ashraful - already did it, 158* vs India, perhaps no longer has the ability, INCONSISTENT

Solid Batsmen Capable of Scoring Tons:

Shakib - already done it, 100 vs NZ, CONSISTENT
Riyad - already done it, 115 vs NZ, CONSISTENT

Naeem - very early days, but i believe he can join shakib/riyad if promoted up the order

Imrul - definitely a rubbish batsmen so far, but his ODI record indicates he can play a long enough innings to put up a 100 in tests.
Raqibul - rubbish so far, but his early ODI career was impressive, i'm not so sure about him as Naeem, but his performance of Bangladesh A indicate he can score at will.
Mehrab Jr - limited batsmen, but might be useful in home conditions, has a 80+ score against NZ
Aftab - a rubbish career so far, but did hit 82 in England, he has the potential to be great

Batsman That Should be Thrown Away:

Shahriar - 138 vs AUS was promising, but his attitude and form indicate his career is over for now.

Quality Spinners:

Shakib - his record and opponent list speaks for itself, he can only get better as spinners usually do with age

Saqlain Sajib - hope is on this guy since Enamul has disappointed
Enamul Jr - hope is always there since he's young and spinners need time, perhaps he needs an extended run in place of Razzak

Pacers with Pace:

Rubel - the only 90 mph man we have, needs to work on his economy rate, the potential is there
Shafiul - at times quicker than Rubel, needs to work on his consistency

What we still need:

2 pacers who can take wickets
A specialist wicket keeper or keeper-batsman
2-3 consistent top order batsmen

to be honest, all of them are proving difficult to find, but i think most difficult will be finding the two pacers. hopefully rubel and shafiul can develop into those two pacers, with shahadat filling in as the third man in.

now a comparison of our team from even 3 years ago, at the start of 2007.

Massive scorers:

Ash - INCONSISTENT

Ton scorers:

Bashar - CONSISTENT
SN - CONSISTENT

Batsmen who should be thrown away (by today's standards):

Rajin
JO

WK:

Mashud

Pacers with Pace:

Shahadat

Pacers capable of taking wickets:

Mashrafee
Shahadat

Quality Spinners:

Rafique

overall, we're much better off nowadays in batting department, but lagging i bowling due to loss of two wicket taking pacers even if they weren't that quick. so we've seen a net gain, but we've had some sporadic losses as well (mostly in WK and possession of a strike pacer).

The sample size of 6 matches, against the relatively weaker bowling (and fielding) attacks is probably not sufficient to indicate anything. Junaed plays a long innings once in a bluemoon (e.g., the T20 innings against Pak). For this test, I want to see what he does today.

Agree. A sample size of 10 is probably better to gauge an initial trend. Still good to see though ... :)

He was too damned young when they threw him to the wolves.

He was too damned young when they threw him to the wolves.

i think after the end of this series he needs to go an extensive WK training camp for 3 weeks plus light batting.

He was too damned young when they threw him to the wolves.
He was only 17 in the Lords test!
That 19 in the debut test had the glimpse of his class.

Mushy and tamim should the capability to learn and improve their game. Both were inconsistent after being thrown in to the deep end and since 2008 they have upped their game. Wish a certain batsmen upped his game after success of 2005. I guess we have moved in to a new era where we are getting few consistent performers. Now all we need are some wins under our belt to encourage this growth.
