"With a target to tune up the national cricketers for the forthcoming Twenty20 World Championship in West Indies, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are all set to launch the first-ever National Cricket League T20 competition from April 11 to 20.

BCB has signed a deal with ATN Records to take care of the marketing aspect of the venture.

Six franchises will own the six divisional teams and Rubaba Dowla, consultant of ATN Records, informed at a press conference yesterday that some corporate houses have already shown their interest to own the franchises.

"I hope we can inform about the franchises on March 29. The prize money will be US$100,000 for the champions while the runners-up team will receive US$50,000 and there will also be other lucrative prizes," said Rubaba adding that they will take all steps to make the tournament a grand success.

"There would be no auction for the first tournament but we will try to bring the divisional teams under franchises for the longer-version tournament from next season. Salary would be restricted for this first tournament and the players will be financially benefited," said Mahbubul Anam, BCB's senior vice-president.

"We hope this single-league tournament will help our national players to prepare for the T20 World Cup," he added.

BCB's director Gazi Ashraf Hossain, also chairman of the tournament committee, informed that national selectors will play a big role to make sure that the leading players are distributed equally among the teams.

"If we want to participate in the Champions League T20 then there is no alternative other than introduce this kind of tournaments in the domestic calendar. We suspended the national cricket league one-day competition because of time constraint and we thought that it would be helpful for us if we play T20 cricket ahead of the World Cup," said Ashraf.

One team can register six foreign players but can field two in a match".

NCL 20-20? So it will be held right after PCL in Dubai?

As this is domestic cricket, I am sure that Rok will be able to play. anyhow, great contest to give the players a chance to have some practice. Also, it will be easier for BCB to pick the final 15 squad.

Guess Mash will not be around, he is warming the bench for KKR and having a good holiday.

Good idea, I hope this franchise system is extended to include the 4 day first class competetion. That will hopefully make that league more competitive and solve the low pay issue.

Is ICC the authority for the Champions League?

Nope.

This is administered by boards from India, Australia and South Africa, while WI and Eng also participate. Modi is the chair.

Would be difficult to get accepted into the league with franchises from Bangladesh. Maybe I am being too pessimistic.

Chiitagong Cyclones (I like it)
Khulna Tigers (home of the Bengal tigers)
Barisal Bauls
Dhaka Sepahis

Where's all this money going to come from? That's a lot in prize-money for what is likely to be an unprofessional setup in the first year. Surely, if NCL got this kind of prize-money we'd be discovering Laras and Inzamams by now...our players would have divorced their wives, ran away from their homes and practice 24/7. You would see Aftab dieing of a heart-attack for practicing too long in the nets...

As BCB says, the players should be evenly distributed in the teams, where some teams have weaker players than the rest. This will provide more of a competition, we dont want one team walking over the other one.

I hope they also have a franchise system for the NCL 4 day league. That should take care of the 'picnic league' or formality mentality for the 4 day league. Becaue then these private owners will hold the players responsible for their performances (i.e. if they don't perform, they won't get picked up next season).

This is good. I am impressed that the BCB managed to attract bids from corporations like Beximco and IFIC. I hope they get rid of that joke PCL and also the Dhaka T20. And instead we have an expanded NCL T20. But I would prefer if the teams were based on districts instead of divisions. As pointed out by many Barisal hardly has any cricketers of their own.

And hopefully the corporations will dish out a few bucks on their teams' uniforms, logos etc. because image plays a big part on the success of these tournaments.

Equinox
March 29, 2010, 05:09 AM
And please can BCB not give the broadcasting rights to ATN? Channel I used to do a much better job broadcasting cricket. Or at least pay a foreign company to produce the broadcast feeds and then let ATN televise it.

I think that this will be a much better tournament in BD, unlike the PCL which is a waste of time.
It shows that the BDs have no clue to playing 20/20 cricket because they do not play enough of it, only playing now because of the WC 20/20.

including teams from even more diverse leagues (in cricket's champions league) will only make the tournament even more attractive and revered (just like football's champions league)

6 players can be registered. two can be played.

i think if we get a place into CHAMPIONS LEAGUE t 20.... we can then play 4 like IPL teams. also may be some squad strenthening can be done by adding one two players from other team on loan.

Hahahhah.....of course you can. But we have to set a deal before that :)

And can you please make me the religious adviser of the team? :-D:-p:saint:

so everybody got their answer regarding foreign players.

6 players can be registered. two can be played.

i think if we get a place into CHAMPIONS LEAGUE t 20.... we can then play 4 like IPL teams. also may be some squad strenthening can be done by adding one two players from other team on loan.

Hope we can get some decent foreign players, although most players from other nations are busy in IPL.It would be nice to have Afridi, Gul & Asif kinda players, rather than the Paki rejects playing mostly in PCL.

BCB's poor marketing

http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/news-details.php?nid=132199

BCB, as per usual practice, had floated tender for the title sponsor of the National Cricket League where T20 was the new addition for this year. But only one company came forward with a poor offer which forced BCB to go for a negotiation with ATN Records who got the marketing and broadcasting right as an event partner for one season, reportedly with a guarantee clause of Tk 50 lakh for the three different formats----four-day, one-day and T20.

The details of the deal were however never disclosed to the media. Without any doubt it's a poor amount of money considering the fact that the board has to pay around Tk 5 crore to arrange this tournament. The question has been however raised after it was disclosed that the T20 competition would adopt the franchise model and ATN Records was given the job to work on it.

It's hard to believe that an organisation, which loves to claim itself as a corporate house, like BCB does, has failed to understand the value of T20 tournament at the current time, especially when they have a very fresh memory of T20 Premier League Cricket that saw huge success in terms of spectators turn out and sponsorship interest.

"Actually we have very little time to work on it. True we may not be fully benefited but everything will be okay from next season," said Gazi Ashraf Hossain, BCB's director and chairman of the tournament committee.

The former national skipper also admitted that lack of professionals in the board was one of the main reasons behind its failure due to the absence of a strong professional marketing set-up headed by a CEO in true sense.

"You know there is no shortage of manpower in the marketing committee and yes, if we have a strong CEO (chief executive officer) then he can look after all the things to maximise benefit from this kind of tournament," confessed Ashraf.

Though he expressed his optimism for the future but no one can be assured when BCB can appoint a permanent CEO, a post which has been vacant for almost three years. Recently two professionals employed in the marketing committee have resigned, only to fuel the notion that professionals are not feeling comfortable to work in a place once regarded as a very lucrative place for them.

With this kind of professionalism, BCB have no right to criticize PCL authority!

What a smug!! Lipu. He is the Director AND Chairman of the tournament committee. He just wants to push the blame to someone else. But wait there is no one to take the blame. So he is making up imaginary CEO of BCB to blame. You are the director and chairman. You should be able to move mountain with that kind of power.

Naming of the teams -

Dhaka Damal
Cyclones of Chittagong
Knights of Khulna
Sultans of Sylhet
Rajshahi Rangers
Barisal Blazers

Beximco bought Dhaka team, IFIC Chittagong, NM Group Rajshahi, STS Group Khulna. A UK-Sylheti businessman is in negotiation with BCB to buy Sylhet team. Some sports organizers may jointly buy Barisal team.

Players auction is deferred to 5th April.

Wrong! A single IPL team can spend only $5 million per season. What you posted of the valution of multiple IPL teams. A way to improve the situation in Bangladesh would be to merge the NCL20 with PCL and the other T20.

Hoping that this will be a better run 20/20 tournament than the mickey mouse PLC in Sharjah, and all the players in the initial 20/20 squad of 30 can take part. Players should be evenly distributed among the 6 teams, should not have more than 2 foreign players, give their own players a chance.

Afterwards, I hope that Siddons have a training camp before the boys leave for the WI.

I think its time for a change. No more Mohameddans, Abahonis, Brothers and sisters. And its T20 we are talking about. lets have some exciting and attacking names.

Heres my pick:

Dhaka Dragons
Chittagong Cyclones/Cobras
Sylhet Sharks/Sea eagles/ Storms
Barisal Bulldogs/Buffalos (I would personally like Barisal Bangers, Bulldozers or Barbarians lol)
Rajshahi Roosters/Rangers/Raiders/Rovers
Khulna Knights/...

My thoughts about T20 in BD:
BCB should take control of T20 cricket immediately before we see another 3 low quality tournament. There should be one big tournament/league instead of three. Keep the number of teams between 8-12. Play double round. Allow 3-4 foreign players in each team, give the players some cool looking gears, build a nice website, get a reputed broadcaster to broadcast- make it a hell of a show. Money?- we have it. I know its all just my dream. Its Bangladesh (cricket board) we are talking about. Can someone give me Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu's phone number?

I find Modi as an Autocrat. We have a very slim chance of making it to the Champions League T20 unless we can do something big like that.

National Cricket League Twenty20
Four franchises sold so far

Four franchises have so far been sold for the National Cricket League (NCL) Twenty20 tournament.

ATN Records, who are taking care of the marketing aspects of the tournament, have sold Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Sylhet -- all for the base price of Tk 65 lakh each.

Beximco have bought the Dhaka franchise, IFIC acquired Chittagong, NM Group had Rajshahi and Riz Biz Events purchased the Sylhet franchise.

STS Group is set to get their hands on Khulna but the Barisal franchise remains unsought. As bidding for the teams ends this afternoon, it is believed that there will be a taker for the Barisal franchise.

The national selectors have singled out mega icon players to make sure that the leading players are distributed equally among the teams.

The mega icon players under the A+ Grade, will be sold for Tk 4 lakh each while A Grade players will go at Tk 3 lakh each, B Grade players will be sold at Tk 2 lakh each, C Grade at Tk 1.5 lakh each and D Grade players at Tk 1 lakh each to the teams, who have all received a list of 125 cricketers from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). They will form 15-member squads from this list. The teams can also register six foreign players but field a maximum of two in a match.

The BCB and ATN Records decided that there wouldn't be any auction for the players for this year's competition because of time constraints, unlike the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) where the players' auction takes place and the cricketers turn into instant millionaires.

As for the title sponsorship, the marketing unit have received three applications, two of which are top mobile phone operators.

The NCL T20s are slated to begin on April 11 at two venues while the launch programme will now take place on April 7 after the Saturday event was deferred.

BCB delayed the introduction of franchises and the players' selection programme to ensure the players can return from the Port City League and rest before they play another tournament.

The players' fitness report will also be monitored in the meantime.

The importance of the tournament is not just for the players' earnings but also for preparing for the upcoming World Twenty20 Championship in West Indies which begins on April 30.

The tournament final will be played on April 20 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, which will host 15 matches while the Khan Saheb Osmani Ali Stadium in Fatullah will host three games.

But, I think that because these matches are being held in BD, it will be better run, remember that it was the first time a 20/20 was held in Sharjah and ATN crew had to fly there at the last moment, and the set up was not properly done.

Maybe, this will happen eventually, but you still have to have teams like the IPL, but I dont think that BCB have the resources and skill like the BCCI, you need someone like Lalit Modi.

NCL t20 will get bigger if ICC allows the champion team to participate in champions league. The champion team will get big amount of money by participating in CL. So the owner of teams will spend more money to get a place in CL.

is it? Now it makes sense why three IPL teams are playing where no team from Pak and BD(in this case blame is on BCB for not arranging a recognized t20 tournament domestically).

Good idea. BCB should go all out to publicise the tournament and make it a success this year (or at least make it appear to be) so that they can attract bigger bids for the teams next year.

Also as someone said above a confirmation from BCCI that the champion will play in the Champions League at some point in the future would go a long way.

Assigning Icons is a bad idea. Look at the IPL. Only one icon has survived.

Raynman
April 6, 2010, 02:23 PM
The Icon idea would be horrible for BD to implement.

They should have salary caps on players and teams so that it is not possible for a team to bid for more than 2 'MAX' contracts.

A 3 foreign players per XI would be good for competition and experience. If the future goal is to compete in Champions league, these players will be crucial to be able to avoid embarassment.

A MUST has to be to allow multi-year contracts so that the players are tied to and loyal to the team and have the incentive to perform well to get playing time.

\\\"The launching ceremony of the National Cricket League\\\'s Twenty20 tournament will be held today.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will sign the agreement between them and the six franchises although the Barisal team hasn\\\'t yet been sold.

Yesterday, ATN Bangla chairman Mahfuzur Rahman bought the Khulna franchise to make the other southern division the only team left out.

The marketing powers behind the event, ATN Records, and BCB were still looking for a last-minute bidder for the sixth division last night. The organisers will wait till this afternoon to find a taker.

Beximco bought the Dhaka franchise, IFIC acquired Chittagong, NM Group had Rajshahi and Riz Biz Events purchased the Sylhet franchise earlier.

Players were divided into five groups; Grade A+ players will get Tk 4 lakh each and the lowest-ranked, Grade D, getting Tk 1 lakh.

Alok Kapali (Sylhet), Naeem Islam (Rajshahi), Shakib Al Hasan (Khulna), Mohammad Ashraful (Dhaka), Tamim Iqbal (Chittagong) and Shahriar Nafees (Barisal) were named the Icon Players for their respective divisions while Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, also a Grade A+ pick, will be up for grabs.

Nafees, Rokibul Hasan, Nazimuddin and Ziaur Rahman were given to Barisal, Tamim, Aftab Ahmed, Rubel Hossain and Faisal Hossain to Chittagong, Ashraful, Mahmudullah Riyad, Jahurul Islam and Mahbubul Alam to Dhaka while Shakib, Abdur Razzak, Imrul Kayes and Dollar Mahmud were given to the Khulna franchise.

Rajshahi will get Naeem, Junaed Siddiqui, Shafiul Islam and Sohrawardi Shuvo as their Icon Players while Kapali, Forhad Reza, Nazmul Hossain and Musharraf Rubel will go to Sylhet.

While the four icon players will play for each division, the rest of the squad will be chosen by the franchises through a lottery that will fully shape the team formation.

The sequence of the teams to choose their respective players will be decided by lottery. The first team decided by drawing lots will make the first pick and the rest will follow in order and the second pick will be done in the reverse fashion.

Thereafter, there will be a lottery again to decide the second round of picking and in the way necessary rounds of drawing lots will complete the affair.

Each team has to pick minimum 14 local players (including the Icon Players) from the players\\\' pool. They can also register the free players (the unpicked players of the players\\\' pool) later on by written application, but after formation of the teams, no player (including Icon Players) will be allowed to changed teams.

The champions will receive Tk 70 lakh while the runners-up team will get Tk 35 lakh while individual performances will also be heavily gifted.

The franchises have also been instructed to keep a five-member team management committee that includes the coach, assistant coach, manager, assistant manager and physiotherapist. BCB have also given a list of 22 coaches for the franchises to choose from.

Shamsur Rahman, Tushar Imran, Nadif Chowdhury, Marshall Ayub, Elias Sunny, Syed Rasel, Nasir Hossain, Mohammad Rafique, Enamul Haque and Arafat Sunny are the Grade A players while another 38 cricketers, including former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud were placed in Grade B.

Thirty-five players are in Grade C and another 35 were included in Grade D.

The six-team competition will begin on April 11 and the final will be held on April 20.

Titoo doesn't know it!

http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/news-details.php?nid=133348

Marketing committee chairman Aziz Al Kaiser Titoo on Tuesday put the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on a spot of bother by saying that he was not fully informed about the National Cricket League's sponsorship deal between the board and ATN Records.

ATN Records won the marketing and broadcasting rights as an event partner of the National Cricket League for one season but surprisingly Titoo, a BCB director who heads the marketing committee, made it clear that he was not involved in the deal although he holds the responsibility to look after this matter.

"I have little knowledge about the deal. It's better you ask Mahbub bhai (BCB's senior vice-president Mahbubul Anam) or someone else if you want to know about the details of the deal," said an apparently frustrated Titoo when asked about the deal over telephone last evening.

The board is yet to disclose the details of the deal that was signed four months ago, giving birth to a lot of unanswered questions. And the man who was supposed to be the official spokesman broke his silence in a most frustrating manner.

"I don't know…. maybe it's my failure. I don't want to blame anybody. May be it's better to say that I failed to deliver," proclaimed Titoo.

It was also hard for the long-serving BCB official to hold his emotions with the recent activities of the board where professionalism seems to be vanishing from all activities.

"I think something is wrong there. Board should find out someone capable for my post", said the businessman clearly expressing his desire to quit.

"But you have to have professionals to do the work properly because it's quite impossible for me to work fulltime at the board. We can act as policymakers and give the guidelines only. And the job is for the professionals to execute the plans," he added.

"The board president is very positive and working very hard to get certain things done. But it is also the responsibility of the directors to rally around him, especially with the most important event -- the World Cup -- knocking at the door," he said.

There was every reason for Titoo to be frustrated as the BCB is yet to appoint a permanent CEO, a post which has been vacant for almost three years and recently two professionals employed in the marketing committee have resigned, only to fuel the notion that professionals are not feeling comfortable to work in a place once regarded as very lucrative for them.

The question of BCB's lack of professionalism was exposed crudely after the country's richest board failed to take the full financial advantage from the National Cricket League (NCL)'s sponsorship deal, especially with the introduction of NCL T20 under franchises exposed the BCB's poor marketing.

It was a good idea to arrange the T20 under franchises but frustratingly BCB could not understand the value of their commodity.

It's often told that the sponsors showed hardly any interest in the domestic events but ATN Records, as a professional group not only won a good financial bargain but also exposed the board's inability to understand the value of professionals.

Both Abul Hasan and Mukter Ali bowled well enough during PCL to be included in grade B. Alauddin Babu should have been up there also. Milon, Shuvagoto, Rony, Mithun are close to grade A, better than likes of Nadif and Tushar.

but he is a handy allrounder, he can bat also and good for T20 format.

It does lot more than that, the grade determines how much you will be paid for the tournament. Icons get 4 lakhs, A grade 3 lakhs, B grade 2 lakhs, C grade 1.5 lakhs, and D grade 1 lakh. Selectors here decided who will get how much since there won't be any auction.

Besides 24 players who are already picked for different teams, players will be assigned to different teams based on lottery, but their pay won't vary regardless of which team they play for.

:notworthy: Some of the best sports logos I've ever seen. This could pass off as art!

Btw, I thought Dhakas team name was Dhaka Damal? I guess Dynamite works (a little) better, but I kinda liked the bangla name...

The camera work in PCL was decent, but the constant interruptions made the games almost unwatchable. Hopefully, whoever is showing the tournament this time around sorts it out and we get a very enjoyable tournament
PS: The logos are really awesome, way beyond my expectations.

Are you kidding me? The cameraman zoomed to the ATN president after every over.
BTW, even though he was wearing a tie, he looked like khet. Really, money talks.

Barishal have god bowling side.

Chittagong looks to have a balance squad in both batting and bowling department.

Dhaka's bowling department isn't good enough to win the comp.

Khulna have dredful batting squad(excluding shakib)

Rajshahi looks a good team in every department. might win the comp

Sylhet, better than dhaka in bowling.

As I feared, Chittagong ended up with no keeper in the lottery. I guess Uttam Sarkar will have to take up the gloves (unless they hire a foreign player who can keep). Rajshahi on other hand have no option but to select Pilot in the playing XI.

Dhaka's bowling department isn't good enough to win the comp.

With Robin, Abul, Emon, Rafique, Nabil, Riyad, Ashraful, and Mehrab, Dhaka's bowling does not look bad to me. Their batting looks rather weak. But again, couple of foreigners can make a huge effect on the team balance.

Players that should not have been in consideration for this tournament -

Javed Omar
Imran Ahmed
Sanawar Hossain
Rajin Saleh
Khaled Mashud
Hasanuzzaman
Shahin Hossain

Besides Pilot and Rajin, players in this list are excluded from the tourny. Not that I am complaining about their exclusion, but it does feel like the lottery was tweaked.

Logos look good. But I'm not too convinced about the names. Shouldn't the owners choose their logos/ names? I would've given Khulna the Tigers logo, because of the Sundarbans. Yet they are given the mascot of Kings??? Also Dhaka Dynamite, terrible idea in my opinion. It signifies violence. Oh well maybe the owners will change the logos and mascots by the next version of the tournament.

There are 36 spots for foreigners in the tournament. I hope the teams don't only go for Pakistani players. There are plenty of potent Sri Lankans, Zimbabweans and West Indians who would be good signings and make the league more diverse. A two week tour of Bangladesh may also tempt some New Zealanders and South Africans to come and play.

I'd like to see Chigumbura, Taibu, Taylor, Malinga Bandara, Tharanga in the league
