The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is likely to appoint former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener as the new bowling coach for the national team while Julien Fountain, a professional English cricket coach, as the fielding coach.

Highly placed sources said the board has almost taken the decision about their appointment and the official announcement may come within a very short time.

The board received seven applications for bowling coach where local Sarwar Imran, former West Indies fast bowler Colin Croft, former English paceman Andrew Caddick, Pakistani Mohsin Kamal, English Colin Siller and South African Ibrahim Mohammed were the other candidates.

Australians David Drew and Mathew Buckley and Sri Lankan Dimuthu Dasun were the other candidates for the position of fielding coach.

The BCB has been desperately looking for the support staff for the national team ahead of the 2011 World Cup where Bangladesh is one of the three co-hosts. The new coaches are expected to join the team next month. The two vital posts have been lying vacant after Sri Lankan bowling coach Champaka Ramanayeke left the job for sickness while the board didn't extend the tenure of Mohammad Salahuddin as a fielding coach.

The preparations for the World Cup under the guidance of Jamie Siddons are likely to kick off from August 20.

Klusener, nicknamed Zulu, played 49 Tests and 171 one-day internationals since he made his debut in January 1996. His baseball-style backlift and explosive hitting symbolised the 1999 World Cup and his heroics nearly took South Africa to the final.

Fountain is a professional English cricket coach and former Great Britain Olympic Baseballer. He has a vast experience in coaching both domestic and international, professional cricket teams including the West Indies, Pakistan and England as a specialist fielding coach.

He was the first baseball player to be used by a Test level cricket team.

So is BCB thinking of abandoning cricket & start playing baseball? I like it!

Not so bad. I would be happy if our new bowling coach is a specialist bowler.

From the list of candidates Klusener seems better candidate than others. SA coaches always do well with subcontinental team e.g. Woolmer, Barlow and Kirsten.
I also liked the idea of Baseball coach. He will help us to improve catching and accurate throwing.

Klusener is a very aggressive player, his batting avrge is a bonus & quite impressive too.
He is a better ODI player & as a bowling coach I expect to see a lot of positives from him.
I think he is a good option.:)
And the fielding coach seems very interesting aswell.:)

But PA reports other name for bowling coach. No mention about Klusener !

Yeah. I say it's quite a bargain. He used to open for sa as pinch hitter and besides bowling he can sure help us out with the pp. I'd be happy if he actually gets the job.

I would like to see Klusener as a coach. Being more of a fast medium pacer himself, he may be able to help our pacers. I also got the feeling that he was also chosen for his batting expertise. Maybe BCB thinking ahead and easing him into the team as a replacement for Jamie Siddons straight after the 2011 WC.

Just based on bowling, Colin Croft should have the obvious candidate. Wasn't he the one that helped out Mashrafee? Anyway, West Indian from that era all have a vast amount of knowledge. Guess Klusener asked for less money.

FIelding coach excites me, He's perfect. All thing he needs to bring is a whip for the boys.

I really hope the first report is not just another basless speculation.

klusener is a far better bowler than his stats suggest, he was a strike bowler before a major injury forced him to become a garden variety medium pacer. he should also teach them some power hitting. ;)

as for fountain he is ATM the most well regarded fielding coach in cricket. both good decisions IMO.

As per Prothom-Alo Graham Diley is the most probable bowling coach. He was very good fast bowler for England after Botham era.I think BCCI consider him for bowling coach.

Not sure who's going to be the fielding coach, but i like Klusener.
He is a fighter with an aggressive attitude (not arrogant or s*b), but a genuine never say die kinda attitude who knows how to work hard. He can inject some tooth in our bowlers.
He is an allrounder, so can also work with our middle, lower order allrounder groups like Riyad, Nayem, Shuvo, Mash et all.

Julien Fontain i think would be an excellent choice for fielding coach.
We should have applied the baseball theory into our fielding a long time ago.

Only thing that is putting me off is his lack of coaching experience. Other than that I think it would be a good choice. As many of you have already mentioned he can also help add some aggression to our late order batting on top of coaching our bowlers.

Julien Fountain would be perfect as fielding coach. He is a no-nonsense type of guy plus has experience of working with Test sides already. So I guess Rhodes was never in the picture?

Now BCB needs to appoint Rafique as spin coach and mentor and Pilot as wicket-keeping coach and mentor. Get rid of Chacha and make Salahuddin the assistant coach and that's our backroom set for the World Cup.

Only thing that is putting me off is his lack of coaching experience. Other than that I think it would be a good choice. As many of you have already mentioned he can also help add some aggression to our late order batting on top of coaching our bowlers.

................

This is not bye one, get one free offer. They are professionals and they will only do what they are paid to do.

Although he has some batting capabilities and I'm sure he would be more useful than JS on the batting side. However, I'm sure he will keep it for future assignments as a head coach/batting coach. He won't risk hurting JS/SG anyone's ego by over stepping. And we don't need a bowling coach to do that, do we?

Why not pick specialist bowlers as the bowling coach? They had the choice of Caddick and Croft, pure bowlers, yet they've chosen an all-rounder as a bowling coach. Not too sure about the move.

Klusener might even be kind enough to teach some of our batsmen, how to take advantage of the powerplays and accelerate the run-rate in the last 10 overs. I still remember his brutal assault on the bowlers in the last 10 overs in the 1999 world cup. I hope JS will invite him to help some of our lower order batsmen or if he doesnt I would want some of our batters to go and seek advice from him of their own will because if they dont, Klusener being the professional he is, is unlikely to overstep the order.

But from all those applicants, I would've preferred and wanted Colin Croft as our bowling coach.

Very big fan of this guy. Shaun Pollock would have been one of the better option but Klusener was an intelligent bowler and he would be able to teach oue lower order how to bat. Met him in 2008 in Ireland, he was Playing for Northamptonshire against Ireland.

Get rid of Chacha and make Salahuddin the assistant coach and that's our backroom set for the World Cup.

well, chacha was an inspiration for a couple of young talents in the team like imrul and shafiul so i am not quite so sure about having chacha out of the coaching staff though he'll be of no real use if we have a bowling and a fielding coach.btw, jonty rhodeser ki hoilo?lotus kamaler shopner moddhei amader fielding coach hoye chilo?

Why do you think he should be kind enough? Is he being kind accepting the job? Is that a part of his job as a bowling coach? I really hate such expectations from a professional. He even should not do it, if he tries to do that, he will disturb other coaches.

Bangali age chinta kore fao khaoar. That way you lose both. Please expect what he is being contracted for.

I really like CK's suggestions, why an all rounder? A pure bowler should be bowling coach. An all rounder can be head coach, so that he understands others perspectives. We have allready made a mistake with JS and now we should be very careful.

Klusener isn't a great choice and certainly doesn't get me excited but given the options avaiable he seems ok. He could groom Shafiul but forget teaching Mashrafee how to bowl in the death . Even a combind team of bowling coaches comprising of Wasim-Waqar-Malinga-UmarGul-Bond would not be able to coach him that. He is that bad in the death.

I think you havent properly read my entire post because if you did, you would've seen how I mentioned Klusener being unlikely to overreach his authority? That's why I said the word "kind" because giving advice to some players without asking for money is even done by professionals. Like for example Salahuddin was our fielding coach and yet Shaqib talks about how he helped his bowling by giving advice. Salahuddin (not saying he was truly professional, but still) also helped Tamim by telling him to improve his sweep-shot in order to play the spinners better, even helped him improve by throwing balls at Tamim to sweep for hours, Tamim himself mentioned this. It doesnt matter if you are a fielding coach, or a bowling caoch, if you feel like you like a certain kid and want to mentor him or if the player goes to seek advice on his batting on how to hit better and farther, and think it wont undermine the head coaches authority, even a professional can do that.

I would have taken him as a batting coach than as a bowling man. He is a cool customer with a very strong nerve. But if I read him correctly, he is quite introvert and not a coaching material.

Our SOS problem at the moment is with the HEAD coach. He is the one that makes the 'team'. Batting, bowling, fielding coaches can look more into the techniques of the players. As long as Siddons is there as the head coach, no batting-bowling-fielding coach can make us win matches.

Any ex-player/murubbi can dish out tips to younger boys on or off the field. That's not something we expect when we employe someone professionally. I read your post completely and the later part couldn't hide your expectation of batting tips. A few poster before you expressed similar expectations from him. Fao was becoming more important than what he was being hired for. No worries, I wanted to prevent the fao issue getting so much importance, unfortunately i picked up your post, but you were not the only one/first one to expect that.

He can unofficially do anything off the field/off training, but no professional will do others job in office/on field, neither he likes others to interfere in his job. If that doesn't undermine our coaches authority, it could be because, JS is not a competent professional.

If he can cope up with the boys well and shows some improvement it would be great. He was always a fighter.

But I can't find a space for Shujon. What would he do? Instead of him Salauddin can be taken as a spin bowling coach. He is a very good spin bowling coach and players like him very much.

I hope we would have a professional manager. Not the quality of Hira-fira.

i will not be surprised if lance klusener becomes the head coach of bangladesh team after the world cup. lance klusener was an all rounder, which means he may be able to take care of both batting and bowling.

i believe klusener can be a better head coach than jaimie siddons because of the fact klusener was an all rounder.

I can't believe BCB have hired a bowling coach who had a test average of 37!! I wanted a South African bowling coach. Either Allan Donald or Shaun Pollock, instead I get Klusener!! Is he confirmed yet or what? And when does he start working with the players?

Just because we want someone doesn't mean we get them. Players like Allan Donald or Shaun Pollock have class. They choose what they want to do very wisely. They didn't even bother applying for the bowling coach position, what makes you think they would want it. For all you and I know BCB might have approached them and got rejected.

All you guys who are going all gaga over Alan Donald and Pollock and thinking why they don't wanna apply makes me just sit back in my chair, smh and smirk because having stayed in their country for three years I know one or two thing about their stance on coming down to the "land of coolies."

Sure they got great calibre and skills. But a coach has to be much more than record holder. He has to have the right sort of mind, heart, compassion and care who sees others as fellow human beings and not some sub-inferior race of apes who need to be taught skills.

As I said don't wanna stir anything controversial here. I am not generalizing and I haven't met these guys but one thing I can vouch for is to be a great coach you need to be a great human first.

Allan Donald doesn't want to be an assistant coach. he wants to be a full time head coach.

He is taking over some Zimbabwean domestic team as head coach.

"I have always wanted to move away from being a bowling specialist and become more of a head coach, and this is exactly the sort of opportunity I've been looking for," Donald told Cricinfo.

"Quite a few jobs I've applied for have asked for 'at least two or three years experience' as a head coach. It's the old chicken and egg story, how do you get the job without the experience, and how do you get the experience without a job! But now that's behind me and I can't wait to get started," Donald said.

Nice post Zeeshan bhai. Just because someone was a great player doesnt necesarily mean they will be the best coach ever. We need someone with a proven background. I think Klusner is a bit of a gamble but its only short term. I wouldnt want him for the long run unless offcourse he does something remarkable with our bowlers before the world cup.

[B]Murad: Allan Donald doesn't want to be an assistant coach. he wants to be a full time head coach.

He is taking over some Zimbabwean domestic team as head coach.

That's the reason. For most of the professionals, it doesn't matter if he has to teach apes or monkeys, if he gets the environment and payment for him. Pollok would be a much better choice than Klusener. Our pace bowlers would have been benefitted from him. Batting side pollok was also a much more accomplished batsman too, if he was being considered as a head coach later.

Klusener is ok for a short time bowling coach, but I don't think he would be that good as a head coach. However, things happen beyond logic and our logic is based on what we know about him. But an individuals personality and inner self can influence his performance a lot. We are yet to know klusener that closely. Lets see.

If someone refuses to be a coach for BD, it's not that he is undermining us, rathar he might have some better scope or career plan that doesn't fit in with this job. Those rascist mentality isn't there in the professional circuit, if someone says so, that means he just didn't have an appropriate opportunity/offer to work with apes.

I would like to bring in an example here:
How many of you are aware of Sesimbra, Rio Ave,Belenenses? Now how many of you know about Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid? The former set was the clubs Jose Mourinho played for and the latter are ones he managed. Being a good player means being a good coach, is not necessarily right. It's actually the opposite, naturally gifted players don't usually make very good coaches, rather the players who work hard on their game, learn a lot more to make up for the skills they are missing make better coaches. So only because Donald/Pollock has great records to back them up doesn't mean they will make good coaches.

Also, Klusner's heart is the size of mount everest. His heroics in 1999 wc is what will always be engraved in my heart as one of the best performances in any sports. I am sure he would make a good coach, at least we should not make any negative judgments before he actually takes over the job.

He didn't.
The board received seven applications for bowling coach where local Sarwar Imran, former West Indies fast bowler Colin Croft, former English paceman Andrew Caddick, Pakistani Mohsin Kamal, English Colin Siller and South African Ibrahim Mohammed were the other candidates.

Indeed...to me Klusener is the Modern Tragic Hero of cricket. I remember that commentary still: "Donald didn't run!". He was a good batsman, and a proper one. He was also a fairly good bowler, just by looking at his test average. Saffers have always worked well with us too.

He has already been chosen, so let's make him welcome. I hope Siddons is nice to him, because although Zulu's likely to replace him, Zulu being effective can only mean one thing..he would turn our radarless bowlers into lethal and intelligent wicket-takers. A good World Cup performance by Bangladesh will only make Siddons look more attractive to other teams. We all know howwe need our bowlers to click for us to do well there.

I remember growing up as young kid, my parents used to get me best tutotr in the town but I never did well considering the guidance I used to receive from my tutors.

Years later I know why. I never paid any attention to their hard work, I was more concerned what time they would leave so I could watch "the fall guy" or any other tv programme.

If our player dont want to learn, does it matter who is our coach.

Mo bahi a good coach will find the pieces that are defective or holding us back and will try to do something about it. This is a professional sport yor snooze you lose. Its not possible for them to keep a position in the team unless they perform (unless offcourse you are you know who). And in order to perform they have to improve their game. There is a big benefit for them to perform beside just the national team. Look at how much money shakib and tamim make even in our domestic circuit. crcket is their job. If you stop doing your job properly you get fired right. Same goes for our players too.

Good point, as afterall SA was infact banned by ICC one because of "racist" allegations and I dont want to insuniate anything either. However, I just wanted to say that one of the Biggest Supporters of Bangladesh Cricket who dearly loved our Country and team, was Eddy Barlow,. Barlow was a South African just like Pollock, Donald and Klusener, yet he loved our "land of coolies" , even his wife Kellie Barlow still supports and loves our country. So just because the majority of SA people might look down on us, its unfair to say that there arent any exceptions because I doubt we had any foriegn coaches who liked our country like Barlow did despite being a South African. Its said, even after he went back to his country and was no longer our coach, he still followed Bangladesh Cricket.

And I think Donald would be that bad because he has taken over the position of Head Coach in a Zimbawean Club team. Pollock always seemed like a real gentleman who never gave rise to any controversy, while he was a cricketer, never sledged, or taunted the opponents and generally had a clear record, not to mention the Pollock Family is well-known cricket Family as his dad and grandad were greats too in SA apparently. Be that as it may, I think Klusener will be a great guy as he can speak Zulu which kinda shows how he has no problems adapting to a different culture

On a side note, has anybody else noticed how the Zimbawean cricket is appointing good EX-Cricketers, in the right places? Guys like Streak, Campbell, Gillespie and now Donald? They are working on their foundations. I mean imagine if bowlers like Shafiul had Donald or Gillespie as a coach when he played for his club, how much Shafiul would've improved? Most of our bowlers are self-taught in an environment that doesnt encourage one to become a fast bowler

i am not sure whether we can attract SA or aus coaches to coach our Domestic teams, because they like to avoid subcontinents. but i feel Indians, Pakistanis or SLankans may be available for the coaches for our domestics. players like ganguly, prasad, saqlain mushtaq, aaquib javed, kalpage may come to coach our domestic teams. in foot ball we have seen out B league teams bringing coaches from South Korea, India, Middle-east or african teams and also european teams. so if the approach is correct it wont be a problem to attract foreign coaches to our domestic leagues.

what we need is to build more competition in the domestic leagues, then automatically teams will look for better coaches from foreign land.

The thing is, I dont really see why they would have a problem coming to the Bangladesh, if they can go over to a war-torn country like Zimbawe? I also think our domestic league is more competitive than the zimbawean local league, not to mention people in Bangladesh like Cricket alot more. The problem therefore lies with our adminstrations, because they just arent enthusiastic enough, and lacks foresight. I mean look at this --http://www.cricinfo.com/southafrica/content/story/473150.html

The Zimbawean young pacers are definitely going to be effected by these two great fast bowlers and will defintely improve while our pacers have to fend for themselves as there arent anyone to teach or mentor them. I mean just look at Shafiul, he said he was going to LEARN leg-cutters from Khaled Mahmud in this stage when he is already in the national team. This just shows we need coaches at the root level. I mean Mashrafee still says how much he learnt from Andy Roberts(the legendary WI pacer) when he came over to Bangladesh for teaching young fast-bowlers. However, now, the BCB has stopped bringing in foriegn coaches for grass-roots level as if all work has been done already.

I dont trust subcontinent coaches, because they arent professional enougha and will generally give their best for their own country. I mean I had seen enough of the likes OF Ramnayeke and Mohsin Kamal and I dont believe they have the professionalism to teach young pacers.

Heck, even for our national team, we are bringing in an Ex-Allrounder instead of a genuine Ex-Fast Bowler

Here is another one from New Age

Klusener yet to sign agreement
Staff Correspondent
The appointment of South African Lance Klusener as the bowling coach of Bangladesh cricket team took a new twist after he demanded some extra facilities and refused to sign the agreement unless they were met.
We have already sent a copy of the agreement to him and after reading it he raised some issues, which we will discus tomorrow [today],’ Enayet Hossain, cricket operations chief of Bangladesh Cricket Board, said on Wednesday.
He, however, did not elaborate. A senior official of the BCB asking not to be named said Klusener will stay only at a hotel during his stint in Bangladesh and also demanded some other facilities, which they never awarded to any overseas staff.
‘We are still hopeful about him. But before signing the agreement Klusener wants these things to be settled,’ said the official. Julien Fountain, who was named as the new fielding coach, however, will arrive today.

i am not sure whether we can attract SA or aus coaches to coach our Domestic teams, because they like to avoid subcontinents. but i feel Indians, Pakistanis or SLankans may be available for the coaches for our domestics. players like ganguly, prasad, saqlain mushtaq, aaquib javed, kalpage may come to coach our domestic teams. in foot ball we have seen out B league teams bringing coaches from South Korea, India, Middle-east or african teams and also european teams. so if the approach is correct it wont be a problem to attract foreign coaches to our domestic leagues.

what we need is to build more competition in the domestic leagues, then automatically teams will look for better coaches from foreign land.

We definitely can get from any country of the world, if we are ready to invest to that extent. I think that's what we need to do to make a sustainable developent in cricket.

No point teaching only 15 national teamers and then there is none to challenge them. We must have better coaches at the domestic leagues, if we want true improvement of the game in our country.

SIddons already seems like a saint compared to klusener..the worst was the fact that he would stay in a hotel the whole time. That is exactly when I'd have told him to f' off. As bowling coach who has had absolutely no experience in coaching, repeat ABSOLUTELY none, and a bowler who wasn't anywhere near legendary, why do we have to listen to his demands? Colin Croft would have been wayy better. That guy was an integral part of one of the top three cricket teams of all time. He was a pure bowler. Mashrafee still thanks his buddy (forgot who) for what he is today. Rather than go for an untested, high-demanding, good test bolwing diva we should have gone for Croft. Just because Lotus doesn't know who he is doesn't mean he's not qualified.

What kind of an idiot accepts a demand that an assistant coach is too good to stay in any top-grade Bangladeshi property? And two holidays in five months? Where's his bloody work ethic?

I don't post much nowadays but had to speak out on such a stupid decision. I was initially happy but then I didn't know of his demands.

Colin Croft would've been so much better. Klusener was much more effective as a batsman than a bowler. In other words he was a batting allrounder. From what I understood, he is a slacker if he wants two holidays in 6 months, even more than Siddons. I dont think our bowlers can learn much from him. I mean even Shahadat has more 5-wicket hauls in Tests than Klusener. The other fact is, Klusener hasnt even coached a team before as he just got his coaching certificate, and so he is untried. Croft or Dilly would've been so much better.

Did BCB do a thorough background check on his record? What were his accomplishments? Where did he coach fast bowling? and what results? Why are they wasting this money? Or is it they got tired of the criticisms and just hired someone to shut up the critics?
At least the fielding coach has a proven record. What a blunder here by the BCB?
The last fast bowling coach is now the fast bowling coach for SL and he is doing well for their bowlers. Why could'nt he do the same for BD? I am sure that they did not pay Champake this amount of money, period!

I have doubt on the success of Lance Klusener as bowling coach.

Klusener never regarded as a team man and was an unwanted person in SA dressing room in his playing time. That is why he had some issues with Smith and had to end his career earlier than expected. Not sure how much he can gel with the coaching stuffs and players to make some constructive improvement. Also he has no experience of coaching. I do not have doubt on his cricketing ability, but have a feeling that Siddons-Klusener partnership is not going to work. I hope I am wrong.

This is turning out to be a joke how long does it take to get a contract sorted? All this time could've been spent training with the boys instead he's spending time on boosting his bank balance. I knew we should've got Colin Croft.

Pretty ironic. I remember Klusener taking 6 wickets against Pakistan in an ODI using his primary lethal weapon - the leg cutter! LOL!

And well, how are you assuming he did not sign the contract yet? Based on this thread? Or based on the fact that BCB has not yet announced it?

BCB are absolutely clueless..wouldn't they ask Klusener during the interview what he would want? It seems they had no idea what Klusener wanted and made it all public without closing the deal..don't blame Klusener at all for complaining..thats what he wants..its BCB's fault for not handling this situation wellalso it seems no back up plan is in place either..why don't they just get another guy? As per Prothom-alo BCB trying to contact with Caddick but not getting any response. So now they are after V Prasad to be bowling coach.

If they cant get someone for an extended period, they should hire someone for a short period, it will be better than nothing. The fast bowlers need good guidance, but at the moment, it looks like Jamie is trying the best he can do, that is getting the bowlers to bowl in specific areas.
