Since there is little or no interest about Bangladesh football compare to cricket I am starting this thread. If you feel any news need a separate thread you may do so.

Let me start with a Newage article. (Fantasy or reality, I dont know)

Website wants to live
-stream games
Staff Correspondent
Bangla-desh Football Federation on Monday received an offer from a Germany-based website for live streaming of the Bangladesh League matches.
Al Musabbir Sadi, general secretary of the BFF, said the federation will take the matter seriously. ‘It is a good opportunity to present Bangladesh football to the viewers around the world. However, we have just received the offer and don’t know the other procedures, we will look into the matter,’ said Sadi.
Meanwhile, the BFF in a bid to motivate the players paid Eid allowances to the trainees at the Asian Games camp. ‘Although the camp began only 15 days ago, we thought we have to show our commitment towards the players,’ said Badal Roy, chairman of the National Team Management Committee.
The BFF is all set to welcome the new head coach of the national football team Robert Rubcic on Wednesday. The Croatian coach will arrive in Dhaka early Wednesday morning and he will be officially introduced to the press in the afternoon before heading to BKSP.
Meanwhile, the federation on Monday informed the National Sports
Council that they were not in a position to allot the Kamalapur stadium to the Film Artistes Association for holding a charity cricket match on October 29. In a letter to the letter to the NSC the BFF said as the Federation Cup will be ongoing on the aforementioned date it is not possible to spare the field.

Happy to see this new Croatian coach is coming.

* Last three season B-League champion Abahani already went to asam (india) to participate a Cup! :)
the official "dol-bodol" will start soon too!

Rubcic comes in with new flavour
Staff Correspondent
Bangladesh football will taste the Croatian flavour with new head coach Robert Rubcic taking charge of the Asian Games football camp at the BKSP today.
Rubcic, scheduled to arrive at Dhaka early in the morning, will be officially introduced to the press in the afternoon. He will be heading for the BKSP to conduct the afternoon session. Rubcic’s arrival has enkindled hopes of football revival in Bangladesh.
Rubcic will the fifth foreign coach to get involved with the Bangladesh football in five years. With the insertion of Argentine Diego Cruciani in 2005, Bangladesh football first tried to attain the Latin flavour and Cruciani along with his trainer Ariel Coleman who provided some new concept for the footballers.
Cruciani guided Bangladesh to the final of the SAFF Championship and the players, for a little while, presented an impressive brand of football under the Argentine. But he also fell from the grace with the BFF officials and the players and he had to leave.
The old fashion coaching of India’s Naeemuddin (2006-07) failed to inspire the footballers and Edson Silva Dido (2008-09), the man from Brazil, came to Bangladesh again promising resurgence.
Dido in his short tenure, however, grabbed the headlines demanding a full freedom in his team selection with an emphasis on the young blood.
The Brazilian, however, failed to show any change in the one or two tournaments he joined and was ultimately sacked over difference of opinion with the federation.
Serbian Zoran Djordevic (2010) came in during the SA Games and guided the host to the coveted gold medal. But the Serbian stormed a controversy by misinterpreting a clause of his contract and demanded a long-term contract the football federation declined. The Serbian had to go just after three months.
Among these coaches, only Cruiciani could show a change in performance and a question arises about what Rubcic will accomplish.
Saiful Bari Titu, the ‘A’ licensee coach of the federation, has his own thoughts. ‘As far I know, the Croats love the innovative brand of football with attacking flavour. The style was initiated by the former Yugoslavs who differed from the traditional European touch. I think Rubcic will be trying to inject the attacking flavour with a solid defence into his players.’
Former national coach Shafikul Islam Manik likes the mental toughness of the Croatian football. ‘I observed the Croats play a brand of football that requires a lot of confidence. Our footballers are to some extent mentally fragile. I hope Rubcic will be able to build confidence in the players.’

Good initiative Mo vai.
*Here's an old news- a new club named Sheikh Jamal has recruited most of the star players by weakening Abahani & Mohammedan in the process.
My thought on the matter is that it's pointless. No matter how they try they will never get the same support as Aba & Moha.
*Another news- Goalkeeper Biplob has moved to crippled Muktijoddha Sangsad leaving Abahani this season. Abahani fans are furious over this.

It's just a shame among many shame for BD football that we still need an old man like Alfaz as a striker. Speaks volume about BD football's current pathetic condition.

Rubcic sets lofty goal - the daily star - link (http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/news-details.php?nid=154197)

http://www.thedailystar.net/photo/2010/09/09/2010-09-09__sp02.jpg

Newly appointed head coach of Bangladesh national football team Robert Rubcic announced his intention to take Bangladesh thirty places higher in the FIFA rankings within the next year.
The 47-year Croat, who arrived in the capital last morning after travelling 24 hours from Zagreb, stated his aim at a crowded press conference at the BFF House yesterday. The soft-spoken Croat was visibly tired but said that he felt exceptionally honoured to be appointed chief coach of a national side for the first time.
"Bangladesh is ranked 152nd in the FIFA rankings and I would like to see them thirty places higher at the end of my term," said Rubcic who is set to lead Bangladesh in the Asian Games, AFC Challenge Cup, Olympic Qualifiers and the FIFA World Cup pre-qualifiers during his one-year stint.
Rubcic, who has spent most of his career in club coaching, admitted it was a challenge coaching a national side. But the former Croatia international is confident he can take Bangladesh forward, but admitted he needs time to make a difference.
"It's not going to be an easy job because the weather and atmosphere is far different from where I come from. But I've been in this line all my life. I've had very good communication with players wherever I have coached. I will try to make these players' condition superb," said Rubcic.
When it comes to style of play, the former assistant coach of Croatia looks likely to be defensive minded, and marked out Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho as his favourite and the best in the business.
“Mourinho is a serious coach, He prepares for a match for ten days. He thinks about the game for twenty-four hours. He is the best coach in the world.”
Rubcic's liking of Mourinho is reflected in his philosophy of building a strong defensive block as he promises to present good football with a balanced formation of 4-2-3-1.
"I prefer fast and speedy football, running for the ninety minutes. I emphasise on the technical aspects," Rubcic said. "I like open play too if the opposition are not that strong. When the opposition is superior, you have to switch tactically to a defensive mode."
The former assistant coach of Croatia was also a member of the World Star XI that played a benefit match for Gabriel Batistuta alongside greats such as Claudio Tafarel, Joao Pinto and Hugo Sanchez in Florence in 1995.
The left-back, Rubcic, also played an international match for Croatia against Romania after representing Yugoslavia at the Under-16 and Under-18 levels.
After meeting the press, the coach travelled to the Bangladesh Krira Shikha Protisthan (BKSP) where he was introduced to the national team's players. He also received a first hand introduction to his charges as they divided into two teams and played a practice match.
Rubcic is scheduled to sit with the local coaching staff today to discuss about the players and is supposed to take charge of the national side after the four-day Eid vacation that began yesterday and will end on September 13.

achha what exactly is the deal with Sheikh Jamal team. They appear out of nowhere, swoop in almost all the Bangladesh national team players into their squad, gets two Serbian coach. The obvious political affiliation is surprising actually with Abahani & Sheikh Russel in the same league.

or is this one of those attempts to make the league competitive/exciting, although I wonder how exciting/competitive the Abahani-Sheikh Jamal tie will be....

I wish Brothers Union, Muktijoddha (does it exist anymore as a club?) or even a new team from outside Dhaka re-surfaced.

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club
New name, new goal
The Daily Star - link (http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/news-details.php?nid=155693)

Despite having roped in 16 national footballers, newcomers Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club reserve enough admiration for two traditional foes Abahani and Mohammedan in the upcoming season that is likely to get underway on October 7 through the Federation Cup qualifiers.

Club president Manzur Kader, having expressed his respect for the country's two powerhouses at a press briefing, said that jerseys of Abahani and Mohammedan had something special to those.

"Apart from them, Muktijoddha Sangsad and Sheikh Russel KC have also formed good sides and we will take each of our opponents seriously," added Kader, who also once was an official of Abahani and Muktijoddha Sangsad.

Dhamnondi Club started to bring star footballers like Aminul Haque, Zahid Hasan Emily, Enamul Haq, Wali Faisal, Mohammad Sujan, Mamunul Islam, Atiqur Rahman Mishu, Zahid Hossain, Nasiruddin, Komol, Shahed under one umbrella during the World Cup and have completed their mission much before the start of the players' transfer. And the club yesterday organised a function at the Gulshan Club to introduce its footballers, cricketers for the First Division and officials to the media.

Kader also promised not to take part in any 'fixed match' and give away any match to any team in the professional football league as the club itself wanted to emerge champions playing fair.

Explaining the reasons behind changing the club's name, Kader said that the club had a glorious history since starting its journey in 1962 with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as its chief patron and once his son Sheikh Kamal was the president.

"But later the club could not keep its momentum going due to lack of patrons and some veteran and optimistic members of the club came forward to include the name of Lt. Sheikh Jamal with Dhanmondi Club in an executive committee meeting in April 2009 and in August, the annual general meeting approved renaming of the club," informed Kader, adding that they had also taken the permission from the Bangabandhu Trust to use the name of Sheikh Jamal, son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib.

Claiming to take the club on the right way, the club president also informed they had already constructed a wall around the ground, which was once used by drug-addicts and prostitutes during night time.

"We do not have any intention to run the club on cigarette, betel leaf and peanut sellers as big companies like UCBL, Partex, Bashundhara, Rupayan, Summit, Nitol Group are with us," said Kader adding that they had designed the club ground with the help of experts from BUET.

Replying to a query, the club president said that they would not backtrack from forming strong teams every year as long as sponsors supported the club.

"There will be a walkway round the ground so that the veterans of Dhanmondi Club can jog and only the boys of the area will be given priority to use the ground apart from the players," said Kader.

Shawkat Aziz Rasel, chairman of governing body and managing director of UCBL, said they want to bring the club as well as its players to a standard level.

Apart from them, football committee chairman Liakat Ali Khan Mukul, football committee adviser Kazi Mahmudul Hasan and cricket committee chairman Zia Ahmed were present.

The club will start its training camp from September 27 at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan in Savar.

Grameenphone Federation Cup 2010
Ctg Abahani beat Police in opener
the daily star (http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/news-details.php?nid=157981)

Chittagong Abahani beat Bangladesh Police by the odd goal in three in the opening match of the 23rd Grameenphone Federation Cup football tournament at the Birshreshtha Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur yesterday.

Dhiman Borua opened the scoring in the 15th minute for the Sky Blues before substitute Arafat made it 2-0 on the hour mark.

Bangladesh Police captain Mafizul Rahman scored a consolation goal from a penalty just before the final whistle.

Earlier, Bangladesh Football Federation senior vice president Abdus Salam Murshedy formally opened the meet as chief guest. Kazi Nabil Ahmed, vice president of BFF and Syed Tahmid Azizul Haque, head of market communications of sponsors Grameenphone, were also present.

The opening match of the first round of the traditional season's curtain raiser was a relatively sedate affair. Even though the gallery entry was made free, there were only a handful of spectators to watch the match, which was mostly a drab affair with the goals providing the few moments of excitement.

Dhiman's opening goal was a cool finish as he dabbed the ball into the net after receiving a cross from captain Masud Alam. Masud was also the provider of the second goal, as his corner was headed in by substitute Arafat.

Thanks Mo bhai.
I'm the biggest Abahani Fan. It started since childhood. I had Abahani jersy, flags, coat pin, club magazine etc. I inherit abahani love from my dad. I had memories like me and my dad cruising through stadium market to get Abahani kits when I was eight years old. My first abahani match was vs brothers in 86 -I was only 6..believe me....people told my dad crazy that he brought me to the packed stadium....huge fight broke after the match ended 1-1 and I had my first taste of police teargas...lol. still now I have the same passion ...i even went abahani hockey match 2 years ago while I was visiting dhaka ...haha...sounds crazy,eh!

I have kind of same story but my dad never took me to the stadium to watch. but he did bought me flags and gears. I had one of the tallest bamboo post flag on the side of the airport road which was seized by police after some time, after which i cried for long time... Big fan of Munna... Abahani management is so good seems like even if play they can become champion lol

We should also understand that UAE and Uzbekistan are ranked way higher then us and overall they are much better teams..this is still a team that needs time with this new coach and hopefully we develop some good players..Hong Kong is a team that is more on our level so hopefully we win..

Given the quality of our opposition, 0-3 loses against them was expected.
You have to give the coach a fair amount of time to expect any results.

Btw, our opportunity to proceed thru the next round as the best 3rd finishes looks even slimmer now since HK had a shocking win over the Uzbeks 1-0.

If our infrastructure in our cricket is so poor just imagine how poor it is in soccer? Soccer is the 2nd sport for BD and yet the infrastructure is nonexistent. We just cannot compete with teams such as Uzbekistan, UAE, and Hong Kong with the system and players we have. Just hiring a foreign coach is not good enough.

Bangladesh 2-0 Myanmar
Wednesday, 23 March 2011 22:04
Yangon: Bangladesh thrust themselves back into contention for a place in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup finals with a shock 2-0 victory over qualification Group A hosts Myanmar.

Having lost 2-0 to Palestine in their opening fixture nothing less than a win would do for Bangladesh against a Myanmar side who also needed a victory following their 1-1 draw with the Philippines.

Shakil Ahmed stunned the sizeable contingent of Myanmar fans at the Yangon Youth Centre when he put Bangladesh one up in the 10th minute before his fellow Mohammedan midfielder Abdul Baten Mojumder Komal, a 67th minute substitute, give his side some breathing space with the second two minutes from full time.

Bangladesh’s first three points puts then second in the standings, one point behind leaders Palestine who played out a goalless draw with the Philippines in the earlier match on Wednesday.

Myanmar are anchored at the foot of the table with just one point but Milan Zivadinovic’s side are far from out of the reckoning.

With tournament regulations stipulating that “the greater number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned” is the first criteria to separate two or more teams with equal points, Myanmar will advance with a victory over Palestine on Friday.

The Philippines also need a victory to go through while a draw will be enough to see Bangladesh into next year’s finals.

The Official everything about Bangladesh Football:

1) Can't run after the first 20 minutes.

2) Can't string together more than 3 consecutive passes.

3) Can't put it in the open net more than once in every 10 chances.

4) Can't help making loser foreign players look like world champions.

5) Can't help glorifying the alga-faggotry of "star" players like "Ameli" generation after loser generation.

Enough is enough. Use the money to feed somebody in TNT Bosti.

bangladesh football federation has no planning of development for bangladesh soccer. They play international players in the domestic league and for that lots of bd players are sitted. We need to bring less international players and all mejor clubs should hire latino american or european coach. Bangladesh plays way less number of matches. It is not right. We should play as many matches as possible. If we can't get any match we should arrange one. we need to have good soccer team beside good cricket team.

Abandon soccer now!

'I am a technician, not a magician'

On April 30, 2011 Kazi Salahuddin completed his third year in a four-year term as president of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF). The legendary ex-striker for the national team had taken over in a blaze of glory, promising to 'take football from the tables to the ground and keep it rolling around the year.' Despite some visible improvements, the jury, however, is still out on his impact in moulding 'the beautiful game' in a country where it lags behind its more popular counterpart in cricket. But on the event of his third year anniversary, The Daily Star's Anisur Rahman and Quazi Zulquarnain Islam caught up with the president to discuss the last three years and what the future holds.

The Daily Star (DS): First of all, congratulations on completing three full years as BFF president. You will agree that these are exciting times for football?
Kazi Salahuddin (KS): Yes, indeed. Tomorrow (Saturday) we will complete the signing of the contract to bring Argentina and Nigeria to Dhaka to play an international friendly. It will be a tri-partite deal between the BFF, the Celebrity Management Group (CMG) and Beximco.

DS: Do you feel that bringing Argentina here represents a major coup for the BFF?
KS: I would like to think so. An international match of this magnitude in the country will definitely help pique the interest for the game amongst sports fans. As I said, that is the number one intention. Also, as per the terms of our deal with Beximco, any profit they make from this venture will be ploughed back into BFF for football development, and any losses will be covered by them. I feel that it is as good a deal as any I have struck so far and kudos to Beximco for that as well

DS: …it is interesting. On face value this looks like a great deal considering the difficulties the BFF have faced with sponsors so far.
KS: (sighs) you are right, finding sponsors have been our and personally my biggest challenge so far. People are screaming about so many things that have not been done and have not been completed. Every day I see people on talk shows giving me theoretical suggestions on how to do what. I tell you that I know how football works. I have a vision but the challenge is getting someone else on board with resources to fund that vision. That is the hardest task and no one has been able to give me a solution to that problem. But hopefully things will be brighter from now on.

DS: … with the Grameenphone deal in the offing?
KS: Yes, we have almost ironed out all the details regarding that deal. We should be signing it soon enough. Also we now have Beximco on board as well. I feel that with such dedicated sponsors we can bring football forward and, to pre-empt a question I know you will ask, target grassroots development.

DS: So you agree that grassroots development has not been executed as well as you would have liked? The DFA's for example are not yet active and the Pioneer League has just taken place once in your three years…
KS: …but it has taken place, no? The key here is to understand that everything is tied into money. I would like to do so many things, but finding the sponsors to fund that has been difficult. About the DFA's, it is true that we have not mobilized them effectively but sometimes you need to look at them too and say that they could do more. I have consistently funded the DFA's and I have doubly rewarded associations who have organised tournaments in their own endeavour. With the Pioneer League, it has happened once and I am confident that we can continue it in the future. The same with the National School Championships. We have completed the Dhaka Metropolitan zone and now we will roll it out to the country.

DS: And there are questions too about the Sylhet academy, which despite permission from the government has not yet been made active…
KS: True, but there are a number of things there that need to be worked out. Some infrastructural and technical issues. It should be up and running by September.

DS: So would you say your work in strengthening structure has not been completely satisfactory?
KS: I see half a glass of water. So is the glass half-full or half-empty? You tell me? Personally, I think it is half-full and that is the way I have always looked at things.

DS: One thing that has happened in your tenure is that the Bangladesh League and Federation Cup have been held regularly. Would you define that as success?
KS: Absolutely. We have regularised football and made it year-round. Players are now earning more money and clubs are being rewarded like never before. I personally made sure that clubs get appearance money for tournaments as well as gate money from their 'home' matches in the Bangladesh League. This is an unprecedented step in Bangladesh football and I think it should incentivise the clubs to move forward, because we do feel that a club structure is necessary to make progress.

DS: What about the Super Cup. It stopped after that money-spinning first edition.
KS: Where did it stop? [DS: …it hasn't happened after the first edition?] KS: That is due to the fact that the sponsors backed out initially. I still brokered another deal but then we had issues with the Bangabandhu stadium. No sponsor was interested to host the tournament at Kamalapur and also there was very little interest from clubs as well. But the second edition is just around the corner. The latest will be June.

DS: That aside, there is still a problem with structure related to the league. What happens to clubs like Beanibazar who get relegated? They fall into a vacuum.
KS: True, but plans are underway to get an 8 team second tier league going. We will have teams like Beanibazar and Shukhtara playing in that league along with the First Division Champions, and the Under 18 team we are in the process of creating. I have also sent out invitations for a few more clubs to come forward to participate.

DS: So would you personally define your time as BFF supremo a success?
KS: (laughs)… is that not for you to decide? Give me a rating and I will accept it. Personally though I am a greedy person; greedy for success. I am my biggest critic. I have been like this ever since I played football, when even if I had scored a hattrick, I felt I could have done more. It is the same here. Things have been done, many positive things. But wholesale change needs more time and dedicated sponsors. As I have said, I am a technician, not a magician.

DS: …and do you feel you have had adequate support in your endeavours from your committees?
KS: I will just say that in many regards, the coordination between committees could have been much better.

DS: What does the future hold for Kazi Salahuddin?
KS: I will definitely run for another term for president. Provided the voters want me, I will try to come in and complete the reforms that I have started. At this stage, I feel like we have laid the groundwork to show young people that football is a viable career alternative. There is more money in the game than ever before as well. Now comes the sweeping changes in the grassroots. I feel that I can give football a platform from where it can pick itself up and move forward

Source: DS

We need someone like him in BCB, someone who actually cares.

Argentina in Dhaka closer to reality
Sports Reporter
The dream of a hundred million Bangladeshi's looks one step closer to reality as the Argentina Football Federation (AFA) released fixtures confirming a friendly against Nigeria to be held on September 6 in Bangladesh.

The Albiceleste have a busy few months ahead with the Copa America sandwiched in between two tours. The first of these tours will see Sergio Batista's charges travel to Abuja on June 1 to play Nigeria before going on to Warsaw on June 5. They will return to Argentina to play Albania in a friendly on June 20, just ahead of the Copa America.

Following South America's showpiece tournament, Argentina will hit the road again with Bucharest and Romania up in August 10 before coming to the South Asia leg of the tour to face Venezuela in Kolkata on September 2 and Nigeria again in Dhaka on September 6.

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) confirmed late last month that Argentina and Nigeria would play a friendly in Dhaka. This will be first such high profile match to be held in Bangladesh and fans are expectant and are set to queue up in droves to catch a glimpse of Lionel Messi and company.

Beximco will sponsor the event while the BFF used a firm, Celebrity Management Group (CMG) to broker the deal for the game.

Rubcic leaves quietly

Frustrated at being unpaid for months the Croatian coach of the Bangladesh national football team, Robert Rubcic, quietly left Dhaka, sources within the Bangladesh Football Federation said on Thursday.

The BFF reportedly did not pay Rubcic his salary for the last the last three months, which sources said left the coach heavily frustrated. The BFF also allegedly did not pay his food and accommodation alowances for the last six months.

Rubcic returned Dhaka on May 6 after a month-long vacation at home and was waiting for the BFF officials to clear his dues. But the federation high-ups left Dhaka to attend the FIFA congress without resolving the issue which only added to his frustration.

The BFF officials, who are now in Dhaka, had no idea about his situation and thus they refrained from making any comments.

His sudden decision to

leave the country has put Bangladesh’s preparations for the two-leg World Cup pre-qualifiers against Pakistan in jeopardy with only four weeks remaining for the crunch matches.

The national team management committee has already named a 27-member provisional squad for the June 29 and July 3 matches. The provisional squad included a Danish footballer of Bangladeshi origin, who was to face trial before Rubcic.

His one-year contract with the BFF is due to expire on September 1.

What the hell man. Why the F are you not paying the man!? I mean, why hire him then? He should of left 6 months ago when they stopped giving his living allowance. Morons. One step forward, a gazillion back.

Bangladesh Football Federation is likely to appoint a foreign coach before the national team's World Cup pre-qualifying match against Pakistan at home on June 29 as the game's governing body have all but given up hope on Croat coach Robert Rubcic's return.

“We have so far failed to make any direct contact with Rubcic (Monday) so that we have almost closed the chapter of Rubcic. We are however hopeful about roping in a foreign coach before our home match against Pakistan,” said Badal Roy after a meeting of the National Team Management Committee (NTMC) yesterday.

Rubcic left Bangladesh on June 2 without prior notice and the NTMC chairman, Badal Roy communicated with Rubcic's agent but failed to reach the coach, who was not paid his last four months' salaries.

It has also been learnt that Rubcic appealed to FIFA to get his unpaid wages but the BFF officials informed that they have yet to get any notice from the world football's governing body even though they are ready to clear Rubcic's wages.

Hasanuzzaman Khan Bablu, a member of NTMC though refuted the ground of such complaint from Rubcic, saying: “We were prepared to clear his (Rubcic's) wages, but could not since he left here without letting us know and without resigning his post. Then what could be his reason for complaint?”

Roy informed that they have short-listed two European coaches for the national team both of whom have better coaching profile than Rubcic.

The NTMC also decided to start the national camp from June 22 as most of national team's players, who play for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, will be available for the camp after that date. Assistant coaches Golam Zilani and Mahbubur Rahman Roxy will conduct the training cam until a new coach is appointed.

Accepting the blame for not giving enough time to prepare the national team ahead of pre-qualifiers, Roy said that some unplanned fixtures, nation-wide strikes from political parties and inclement weather left little time for the national team to prepare.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh-born Danish booter Jamal Bhuiyan arrived in Dhaka on Sunday after his call-up for the 27-member preliminary squad earlier.

“We will introduce him tomorrow (Tuesday) to the coaches. We have planned to arrange training for Jamal with the clubs' as we are yet to start the national camp,” said Roy.

NTMC member Imtiaz Sultan Jonny said, “We will get an idea about how talented he is after seeing those training sessions.”

Bangladesh football coach Robert Rubcic has made a formal complaint to FIFA against the Bangladesh Football Federation over his unpaid salaries, officials said on Monday.

Rubcic left Dhaka on June 2 without informing the BFF officials as he was not paid his salaries for four months as well as well as his food and lodging costs.

The BFF initially played down the event saying he had left for an urgent family reason and should return soon.

Though none of the federation officials was aware of his departure, the BFF vice-president and chairman of the national team management committee, Badal Roy, who was in Zurich to attend the FIFA congress, claimed upon his return that Rubcic had obtained permission from him.

However, it became crystal clear within a few days that there was no family matter involved in his departure and the coach was clearly unhappy with the way he was treated by the BFF.

The BFF also tried to sell a story that the coach has left the country as he was afraid of travelling to Pakistan for the return leg of World Cup qualifier, scheduled for July 3 in Lahore.

As Rubcic did not maintain any contact, the federation turned to his agent, who also failed to give any solution to the crisis. The agent is said to have been able to only make a contact with the coach’s wife and son.

Sources said the FIFA in letter asked the BFF to explain everything about Rubcic after they had received a complaint from the Croat. The BFF was preparing a reply, said the sources.

The BFF also started looking for a possible replacement, who they could name in a day or two. A few candidates were identified through the agents, said Hasanuzzaman Khan Bablu, a member of the national team management committee.

‘Yes, we could not pay him for several months as we were in a financial crisis but he should have asked us for his salary,’ said Bablu. ‘He cannot leave the country without informing us. He has violated the agreement in doing this.’ he said.

‘We have already talked to some agents who sent us names of some interested candidates from Russia, Serbia, Brazil and Macedonia,’ he said.

‘We can even get the coach before our Pakistan game,’ added Bablu, himself a former national coach.

Rubcic’s contract with the BFF expires in September this year.

Top six for Super Cup
Sports Reporter

The top six finishers of the ongoing Grameenphone Bangladesh League will be allowed to take part in the second edition of the Super Cup beginning in the second week of July.

“To make the Super Cup more competitive, we have decided to allow top six finishers of the professional football league, instead of the top eight teams,” said Harunur Rashid, chairman of Bangladesh Football Federation tournament committee yesterday.

The participating teams, split into two groups, will play in the double-leg first round, from where the top two finishers from each group will advance to the semifinals.

According to the current standing of the 12-team league, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, Abahani, Muktijoddha and Sheikh Russel have already confirmed their berths but the fifth and six teams are to be decided from three strong contenders -- Mohammedan, Brothers Union and Rahmatganj.

Rashid said that they would finalise the prize money of the champions and the participation

fees after discussing

with BFF president Kazi Salahuddin, who had earlier confirmed that champions will win Tk 1 crore like in the first edition held in 2009.

Aminul hangs up national gloves
Former national captain Aminul Haq decided to call time on his international career. Aminul Haq, the last line of defence of the Bangladesh national football team for the last decade and a half, tendered his official retirement paper to the Bangladesh Football Federation yesterday. The stalwart goalkeeper who held custody of the national team and many a local club, earning plaudits from coaches, fellow players and supporters, cited family commitments and making room for youngsters as the reason for his decision.

“I have served the national team for a long time, and with satisfaction. I think it's time to call time on my international career while on a relative high. It is the job of the youngsters to take over the mantle now, and there are a few good ones. Now that I am giving up on international duty, I will be able to give more time to my family which was the chief reason for my retirement,” replied 33-year-old Aminul to the reporters at the BFF house yesterday.

The retirement of Aminul comes hot on the heels of the denial of two more veterans, defender Rajani Kanta Barman and midfielder Matiur Rahman Munna, to play for the national team. Bangladesh are to be involved in two 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on June 29 and July 03, and all three of them had been named in the preliminary squad.

“I have received the letter. We will sit for the executive committee meeting and take a decision on this regard,” said Badal Roy, vice-president of BFF and chairman of player management committee.

“He has been wanting to retire for some time now. Even though it will be a great loss to the national side, we understand his position and we will consider his point when taking our decision,” Roy added.

However, judging from previous instances of players retiring, it may not come as a great surprise if the goalie makes a u-turn soon. Aminul tried to avoid making any replies to such a query saying:

“I cannot say about that at the moment.” The long-serving goalkeeper however brushed aside any hint of resentment.

Aminul made his club debut with the Mohammedan junior team in 1994 before moving to Farashganj where he made his first division debut in 1996. He has represented most of the big clubs in the domestic football scene, but it was with Muktijodhha Sangsad that he spent ten years at the prime of his form.

Aminul had been part of the national squad since 1996, but made his debut in 1998 in two friendly matches, first against the Qatar national team which the team drew 1-1 and then against Qatar u-23 which was also drawn 1-1.

His latest commitment with the national side was against Hong Kong in the Asian Games in Ghuangzhou last November where Bangladesh lost 4-1.

He was also slotted in for the AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers in March 2011, but withdrew himself due to injury at the eleventh hour.

Aminul had been part of the national sides that won the gold in the 1999 SAF Games, 2010 SA Games and also the 2003 SAFF Championship-winning team. Aminul paid tribute to George Kotan, the former Austrian coach of Bangladesh, for his role in resurrecting his career.

“He gave my football a new life after my career-threatening injury in 1999. I will always be indebted to Kotan.”

Aminul said he was looking forward to playing five to six more years in club football, before he hangs up his footballing gloves.

Camp for Pakistan match on
Sports Reporter

Bangladesh's preparation for the FIFA World Cup pre-qualifiers against Pakistan got underway with 11 players out of 24 at the BKSP today.

Coach Golam Jinali conducted training after nine players from Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, one from Brothers Union and Danish-born Bangladeshi booter Jamal Bhuiyan reported to the camp in the morning.

Four players of Sheikh Russel were scheduled to join camp later yesterday night after their match against Chittagong Abahani while Farashganj SC's Sohel Rana is expected to join today morning.

Besides, four Muktijoddha Sangsad players are scheduled to join the camp tonight after Muktijoddha Sangsad's game against Rahmatganj MFS while new coach Macedonian Nikola Ilievski is also expected to take charge before today's afternoon session.

The rest of the three Abahani players will join the camp after their last match against Brothers Union on Monday.

The players will return to Dhaka on June 28, just one day before Bangladesh's home match against Pakistan on June 29.

Bangladesh are scheduled to travel to play against Pakistan on July 3 though FIFA told BFF that they would make a final decision on shifting the game from Lahore next week.

TAKING A FRESH OATH: Booters at the national team's camp in BKSP huddle around their new mentor Nikola Ilievski in an oath yesterday, ahead of the double-legged World Cup pre-qualifiers against Pakistan. - The Daily Star -

Ilievski imparts pressing football

Football focus shifted from professional league to the world cup pre-qualifiers against Pakistan as all 24 booters practised for the first time under new Macedonian coach Nikola Ilievski at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan in Savar yesterday.
The booters, who looked rather fatigued during the hour-long session due to the seven-month professional football league, said they wanted to keep their fatigue aside when they take on Pakistan, who will arrive in Dhaka today, in the home match on June 29 and then the away match on July 3 in Lahore.
“All the players are tired after playing a long league but we are determined to give our hundred percent in both matches against Pakistan,” said striker Zahid Hasan Emily after the practice session.
“We have had discussions among ourselves and everyone is committed to do something good against Pakistan as the advancement to the second round of the world cup pre-qualifiers will be something praiseworthy,” said Emily, who captained Bangladesh in their last international assignment in the AFC Challenge Cup in Myanmar.
Midfielder Mamunul Islam, echoing the sentiment of Emily, said the task would be a challenging one for them because they have been given short time to prepare for the matches.
“We are all concentrating on the international commitment and we know there is big difference between club-level football and international-level football. We all are focused to prove ourselves at the international level,” said Mamunul.
The national team will have another two days left to prepare themselves before the home match and it is yet to be found how quickly they can adopt to the new coach Ilievski's strategy.
Both Emily and Mamunul said that that the style followed by Ilievski, that of pressing football, is similar to the one introduced by former coach Zoran Djordjevic introduced during SA Games, and that they would not have much difficulty adopting to Ilievski's style.
“He prefers pressing football which we had learnt from Djordjevic. In this style you regain possession as soon as possible after losing it and I think we will be able to cope with his strategy,” said Emily.
It was seen during the practice that the coach preferred his players to release the ball as soon as possible and take his position while a defender or a defensive midfielder goes to the attack to strengthen the forward line keeping four defenders intact in the backline.
Ilievski is more or less happy after the session and apparently declined to mention whether any player drew his attention.
“The standard of Bangladesh football is not like that of Brazil and they don't have a player like Messi,” Ilievski said. “It is a game of eleven players and I prefer to emphasise on all of them, not just a single one.”

World Cup Pre-Qualifier
Pakistan, hopeful and inviting

Sports Reporter

The coach of the Pakistan national football team believes that there is no reason for Bangladesh to be concerned about the security situation in Pakistan for the second leg of the World Cup pre-qualifiers in Lahore on July 3.

The Pakistan team arrived in Dhaka yesterday afternoon for the Dhaka leg match which takes place tomorrow and then will be hosting Bangladesh on July 3 in Lahore, after FIFA gave the all-clear on Friday regarding the security measures there, rejecting Bangladesh's appeal to hold the match in either Dhaka or a neutral venue.

Tariq Lutfi, the coach of Pakistan, is convinced that the players and officials of Bangladesh will have the safest journey there.

“There may be concerns in the mind of players and officials, but I feel that Pakistan is a safe country. What goes on outside is a different thing altogether, and you won't feel anything when you come,” said Lutfi after his team checked in at Ruposhi Bangla hotel yesterday. Lutfi also mentioned the Malaysia and Palestine football teams' visit to Pakistan as a case for tight security.

Meanwhile the Pakistan coach expects good things from his team in tomorrow's match as they have been practising hard for a month and had a few practice matches as well.

“We started preparation early this month and played six to seven practice matches against the premier division teams in Islamabad,” said Lutfi who took charge of the team six months ago, after his first stint in 1985.

“We are grooming a new generation of players while we need some senior players as well. The boys have been playing good football for the last eight to nine months,” said Lutfi adding that the squad consists of four overseas players -- Adnan Farooq, Atif Bashir, Zeeshan Rahman and Ahmed Akbar Khan.

Midfielder Farooq, who received training at the Manchester United football academy in 2001-2002, is now playing for an Iranian Club, Ahmed Akbar Khan is a UK-based playmaker, Atif Bashir is playing in the Australian league while Zeeshan Rahman, a former Fulham player, is now playing in the Thailand League.

The squad has also 8 to 10 players who played the Olympic pre-qualifiers against Malaysia. Pakistan drew the home-leg match against Malaysia and lost the away match 2-0.

Apart from them, there are six young players who are waiting to wear the green jersey for the first time.

“The young players are working as expected and I am pleased with them,” Lutfi said, “Yes, there was problem in the striking zone during the SAFF Championship but now we have enough strikers available to make a difference.”

Captain-cum-goalkeeper Jaffer Khan informed that striker Arif Mahmood is on song, scoring 16 goals in their practice matches.

“Good physique and fighting attitude may make the difference against Bangladesh,” said Jaffer.

We will face Lebanon in 2nd tier of qualifier if we win. And given situation at Lebanon who knows they might pull themselves out.

Well even if we do win, we'll end up facing a stronger team and get kicked out in the second round anyways.

Well we play Lebanon in the 2nd round who are ranked even lower then Pakistan so we could beat them as well but we should take it 1 step at a time and try to beat Pakistan 1st.

ok, the pitch was a problem , but now we are going to play the 2nd Leg at pakistan where let alone the pitch, the country even should not host a international match with the security problems they have in their country.

but still we went to play in in pakistan with so much of risks of life whereas pakistan only had to deal with some rain ....

Jamal Bhuyan accuses federation of cheating

Danish-born Bangladeshi footballer Jamal Bhuyan accused the Bangladesh Football Federation of cheating as it did not move to help him get the Bangladeshi passport which ultimately cost him a place in the national team.

‘The BFF promised me to get my passport within three days of my arrival in Dhaka, but they could not get it even after 23 days of my arrival,’ Jamal told New Age prior to his departure for Denmark on Sunday.

if we get past Lebanon, than we play in the Group format (6 matches)

Heres a Lebanon supporters take on the WQC from bigsoccer

at the moment, I think Bangladesh are favorites if game is in 3 weeks.
I think lebanon still have games vs uae and oman(friendlies), maybe some chemsitry and improvements would happen until bangladesh game.

It goes on aggregate score. Who ever scores the most wins. Sort of like champions league Knock out stage.

if the teams are tied on aggregate after regulation 90 mins of the second leg, its usually silver goal extra time and if needed penalty shootout after that...

akabir bhai, does it say it'll be penalty shootout right away (without the extra time?)....

Isn't it 4.5?

In any case, qualification is out of the question, we'd be more likely to win the cricket WC if it were held again this year.

The key is 1 game at a time. I'm very keen to going to the 3rd round but Lebanon is on our level and if we mess up in Beirut, we're in trouble. They'll be even more physically superior then Pakistan which will cause trouble to our players. They just have to follow their style and not get too fazed.

They may have physically superior to us but we have to beat them technically.Though their ranking is now below to us, they are better team but they don't play so many international match. This is why their ranking is so bad.

If our players can play good we can draw in their soil and in Dhaka we have to win.

Ya I agree. They have to really focus on being technically superior. I mean Japan is 1 of the smallest teams but they always do well in the WC. That's what the BD players should focus on. A draw in Lebanon would be a job well done. I think that Lebanon would have the same problems as Pakistan in terms of playing on soft grounds.

I hate to say this, but maybe we should play a defensive/counter attack based game in Beirut to ensure that we can get away with at least a draw in the worst case? We should then go for the kill at home. A loss in the away game will put tremendous pressure on us to not only win at home but also overcome the GD.

The Players are Safely in Lebanon (http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/news-details.php?nid=195173)

The Bangladesh national football team reached Beirut yesterday afternoon safely to take part in their away match of the World Cup pre-qualifier against Lebanon after an arduous 16-hour journey.

The match will be held on July 23.

Most anticipated match in Bangladesh football history? I can see it ending badly though :(

I hope the boys don't let us down. A draw is all we need tomorrow.
