I would have given players like Riyad, Nayeem a chance in this squad as they are both out of form. I would also put Nirala in this squad because he only played that one match against england and he was out again. So let him get a hang of things. Other than that good enough squad.

Good Squad.

Last time their only Practice match got washed out before any ball bowled for Rain @ Fatulla Stadium. at that point Fatulla had no facilities against rain. Myself and thebest bhai were there to watch NZ players playing football instead of cricket. Hope this time it will go on with no problem.

^Has the drainage system of Fatullah been improved?

I read in a bangla newspaper recently that fatulla's WC related venue improvement is really slow although the construction company says they will do it by the end of nov but the reporter thinks that is not possible. in some area of work he was saying 80% work is not done yet! SMBL!

A great squad overall..gotta applaud the selectors for the squad..great combination of fringes and upcoming talents..looks like this squad could give the Kiwis some trouble..looking forward to who performs..and bangladesh_sy I think they left out Nirala, Riyad and Naeem because they don't want any national team players to get exposed to the Kiwis..

Overall a very good squad except the pace bowling department.... I would have selected Talha and Sharif/Ziaur Rahman over the likes of nazmu/Dolar and Rasel (Trott and collingwood pace at best).....

I know Sharif and talha been tried and tested without much success but they are more successful in the domestics than the other failiure Nazmul and Dolar. Also Anyone who knows cricket and actually had the chance to watch Ziaur Rahman play should know that he is a very good bowler for death overs.. Can produce yorkers with a lot of success and that is also the case with Sharif...while both are terrible with the new ball.

Cmon Ashraful, score a century... I know most forumers hate you but I still think you are one of the very few match winners that bangladesh has ever produced...When your career ends, probably the likes of Raqibul Hasan and Imrul Kayes would have far better averages than you but i can bet that they will never win any matches for the team like you did.
GO ASH

Nazmul was bowling really well before getting injured. I'd have liked Rok, SN, Jahirul, Naeem and Shuvo to get some match practice before the series.

My XI:
Shamsur Rahman
Nazimuddin
Shuvagoto Hom
Mohammad Ashraful*
Foisal Hossain
Mithun Ali+
Shabbir Rahman (Nur Hossain)
Nasir Hossain

I don't even remember the last time Ashraful scored a century, in any form of cricket. I can say with a fair degree of certainty that he will fail yet again.

The national team still has gaping holes in the top and middle order. Some of these guys can conceivably still make it to the world cup team with some special performances. Shuvagoto, Nazimuddin and Shamsur are the front runners one would think. These guys really need to make this game count.

Well for me I want Ash to do really well in the warm up matches..it would be nice to see Ash doing well but the problem with our selectors is that they get so hyped up about Ash doing well in the warm up matches and once he steps in to play for the official games then he struggles..so what the selectors should do is not select him for this tour and let him play the whole season of NCL..if he can be consistent there then we can start to consider him..but I don't want him to just have a double hundred and then single digit scores..I want consistency from him and he needs to show it if he wants to be back in the national team..

I like the team - it should be a very good experience for the younger guys although would have loved to see Shuvashish Roy instead of Shahadat, but either way I don't think we'll play more than two pacers. Really looking forward to how Shuvagata, Nasir & Shabbir perform and best of luck to Faisal Hossain - want to see him force his way back to the national side! I am guessing it was a deliberate ploy not to pick any specialist slow left arm bowler in the squad.

Bad news regarding the 2 practice matches

The late monsoon is in full flow at the moment and after last evening's all-encompassing douse, there is serious doubt over the two practice matches to be held at the BKSP in Savar. The cricket ground is already under water and according to curator Shafiul Islam Belal, it will be a washout if there's another downpour in the area. Thunderstorms are already projected for the weekend when the first practice game is scheduled to be held.

Shahadat has the great makings to be a good pacer..has the height, can build up a good amount of pace, and has good carry but the problem with him is like all other players is consistency..he's the Ash version of a pacer..the main problem with him is that he often bowls it too short and unless you have great pace your just gonna get smacked in international cricket..and from what I hear Ramanayeke was just trying to change his wrist position while bowling since Shahadat was cupping the ball when he released which (1)takes pace off the delivery and (2) brings the delivery down and bowls it shorter then what he's supposed to bowl it..but if Shahadat was that uncomfortable bowling with a changed wrist position then should've told Champaka that he was just not himself..I mean Champaka is a bowling coach after all and could've helped him out in some way..well past is past and whether we like it or not Shahadat is our best test pacer and is a must in our test side..selectors should always have him in the fold..

Shakib the main threat: Vettori

The Daily Star (http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/news-details.php?nid=156531)
New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said on Wednesday that they singled out Shakib Al Hasan, the world's number one all-rounder, as the main threat in next week's five-match one-day series.

And the Kiwis' skipper believes that the absence of dashing opener Tamim Iqbal, who was ruled out for the series due to a surgery on his left wrist, is a big loss for the home side who are also going to miss the services of experienced batsman Mohammad Ashraful who was out of the team because of his poor form.

"We have seen the Bangladesh team improved. Obviously Shakib (Al Hasan) is probably their best player, so if we can nullify him we know we are going to win. He is a very good player, he has proven himself particularly in these conditions, so he is probably their main player," said Vettori when asked who would be their main threat in the series while speaking at an official press conference in Mirpur yesterday.

"I think we have some similarity, we both bat down the order at the same position and we both bowl left-arm spin. And Shakib was captain for a while, so there was some obvious comparison. The key for us hopefully is that we can play a role in our team winning. Obviously you want to try and out-think the opposition as much as you can. And Shakib is probably our main opposition," he added when asked of his comparison with Shakib.

"Ashraful has been dropped, hasn't he? Obviously he is not in form. [Tamim] Iqbal is injured, so that's big loss for Bangladesh. He scored a lot of runs at the top of the order. So he will be a loss throughout the series," he said.

The 31-year-old all-rounder, who so far played 100 Tests and 255 ODIs, said that the tough task await for them but he was confident about a clean sweep against Mashrafe Bin Mortaza's men.

"I think Bangladesh have improved. They are particularly good at home. Obviously we came here to win but we know it's going to be a tough series," said Vettori.

"We are just thinking about those first couple of warm-up games and we just got off to playing. So we know it's a tough task. But I think you have to play really well to win every game you have and that's the way to go," he added when asked whether they were expecting a 5-0 result.

The visitors will play two warm-up games on October 1 and 3 at BKSP before the start of the one-day series on October 5.

The Kiwis skipper reiterated that there was no scope for them to take the Tigers lightly especially at their own den and they need to give their best if they want to win the series convincingly.

"We are confident as we have got some very good players, particularly our batting line-up with (Jesse) Ryder, (Brendon) McCullum and (Ross) Taylor at the top, a lot of expectation on us. We are looking forward to winning the series," he said.

Vettori once again said that the matches in the subcontinent will work as a build-up tour for the 2011 World Cup

"I think that's one of the best reasons to be here. To experience the conditions for a number of guys who have not been here before. We are lucky enough to be in Sri Lanka, and then we go to India after this series so we get to go all three host nations before the World Cup," he said.
