^^ 4 more wickets.
Question is, can he take 13 wickets in this 5 match series to scalp his 50th for the year ?? That would be remarkable.
Cuz Ryan Harris' record is pretty impressive, averaging only 15.17 compared to Shakib's 27.16.
But heh, who cares, as long as we have one of our own topping the list once again.

Ryan Harris bowled in seamer friendly conditions in England, Aus etc. Iceman had to bowl in SL (Asia cup) which was a high scoring series and wickets were dead flat. So obviously won't be as pretty as Ryan's figures.

And yep, 50 would be awesome!

ice man is almost certain to top wicket-takers list this year!
all i want is he remembers today's thrashing and hits back with at least 7 wickets and be the 1st bangladeshi to capture :50: wickets (Mash ended with 49 in 2006) and...

a distant dream -
score 224 runs (2 centuries) and be the 2nd bangladeshi (S. Nafees was the 1st in 2006) to score :100:0 runs in a calendar year.

even better should he cross the 1,033 run mark set by S. Nafees back in 2006.

224 runs and 7 more wickets, he would be the first cricketer ever to score 1000 runs and take 50 wickets in a calender year.

And just look at how many more matches the rest of the players played! Only Bond played fewer matches and, of course, he was a special bowler as well. I really wonder how good he would have been if his body held up.

I am so pissed with his batting at this point from his last innings... he did exact opposite of what the team needed. He can only play one way. Can not change gear from 4 to 1 when the road is bumpy.

^^ Interesting but ultimately pointless, given that this is something that everyone knows. Shakib has set the benchmark so high, that in BD he should only be measured against his own statistics and against the players of other teams.

Also, we need to consider the context of his scores and wickets. Do they come in dead rubber matches and other instances of little consequence? This year, despite getting runs and wickets, they haven't been as game changing as they used to be in other years and so the numbers seem hollow. His all-round performances in the last game against Zim and the Windies were both dead rubbers. In terms of game changing performances, Mushy has had a far more notable year.

The hero is lacking in the upper chamber. One do not have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out. Playing test in an ODI mode doesn't help the team. Yes, he is talented and we all believe he can be better, but playing carefree and losing that is not what cricket is all about. When would he realize that?

His statistics represent a player who makes contributions, but fails to kick on. In ODI's, it shows consistency, and a relatively good stroke play.

It also shows that rest of the players are poor that even his mediocre performances put him on the top. Even someone who is the best needs tough competition and challenge to bring best of his best. Shakib is far far better player than the stat suggests. His batting averages in all forms of the game should be mid 40s and his bowling averages should be around 20s.

:up::up:

He had the chance to be hero .... He failed. He has played well and has good average with bat and ball. But he failed to be the hero in every occasion it was expected from him.....

Players become heroes or greats by performing when the team needs him the most .... And finish a game/play perfectly for the situation to impact the results, succeeding more often.

In that way Shane Watson or Kallis etc guys are way ahead of Shakib. And that's where he doesn't earn enough international recognition/attention, like his contenders ...

AsifTheManRahman

He was the hero on several occasions though, starting with the win against India in '07 to beating the WI away from home to beating NZ 4-0 to beating Zimbabwe several times. He's failed to finish the job at times, but the number of MoS awards indicates that he's had a good success rate too.

Kallis hardly bowls now a days, even when he does he doesn't get any success with both bat and ball. Same goes for Watson...look at their statistics. When is the last time either of them has helped their side to win with their all round performances ? When is the last time they had to face a situation where their side were struggling even to cross 100 runs? So Shakib is holding the number one position with his own rights. ICC is not a philanthropic society who will rank a player as the best without considering his performances. Your comment sounds more like those English commentator who doesn't want to consider any Bangladeshi player as the best one. It takes a superhuman to perform all the time with both bat and ball. Shakib is doing a pretty decent job here. We can't expect him to be the hero in each and every game. Yes, we expect more from him and he has his limitations as well but we should give him the credit where he deserves.

You know what the problem is?
the problem is Sakib has fought hard in past as well as at present, he saved us from many humiliating situations, but when it comes to the art of performing in a win win situation and eventually winning a match for BD Sakib still has a long way to go.
Please note that I'm not blaming Sak for our losses but as a n°1 all rounder I expect him to win more matches or contribute more in winning matches than just saving us from humiliation.

mmm actually his record shows he single handedly won more matches for us than any other cricketer of BD (past and present). But amader to ei ektai shobedhon neelmoni tai or kachh theke amader expectation o shobshomoi world class.. His below par performance with the bat actually made us forget how outstanding he was with the ball (was unlucky for not getting many wickets but bowled superbly- proof cricinfo)

I simply have no answer. He was absolutely uncomfortable against Pak specially off spinner . What does that imply? that he lacks the technique of defending those world class off spinner :( ...I think he is concentrating more on his bowling as he knows if he doesn't create the pressure there is not a single bowler to do that but we as a poor team need him to perform with the bat equally !!! which is sometimes hard you know. Look at Afridi or Hafeez . Today Afridi failed with both bat and ball but that would go unnoticed as the team has pulled up a win with some other outstanding performance. Even with a poor show with the bat Shakib is actually the second highest run scorer of the team that pretty much tells you what a poor team we are :( . Just to be fair with this poor fellow I would say we are burning him out and who knows may be in the course of time we might lose him :( ...

I am really worried to see that confusion on his face... no confidence there.. I totally miss that fighter Shakib, the guileful smile on his face and that is what making me angry. Why why why can't he do it every time :( ... Absolutely DISAPPOINTED :hairpull:

Very thoughtful post by Simon.

To add a few words with this. Shakib didn't have a good mentor for him in the national team. Every other team in the world has some good senior players who does take most of the loads and help young ones to groom up. Shakib didn't have the luxury of having those kinds of supports. Still he has manages to do wonders for us.

Cricket is a game of 11 persons, not 1 or 2 persons.

Shakib needs 11 more Test wickets to become only the 2nd Bangladeshi to notch up 100 wickets in Tests and 12 to pass Mohammad Rafique as the highest wicket taker ever for Bangladesh. Will he be able to do it this series? It'll be tough but I really hope so.

First Bangladeshi player to pick a 5fer and score a 100 in the same match.
Ended the year with an average of 50.11 with the bat, a bowling average of 28.61 with 2 wicket hauls.

5 wicket hauls against each G8 test playing opposition.
Averaging 33.17 with 5 fifties and a bowling average of 28.08 in ODIs.
2 Man of the match awards in ODIs, one in tests and one man of the series award in tests.

Inarguably his best year as far as test career is concerned.
