http://www.banglanews24.com.bd/images/PhotoGallery/PM101019-03.jpg

Why the "suter kapor'h"??? It's like giving someone shar'hi, gauyna and a set of Esperanto tapes. Furniture from OTOBI would've been more appropriate IMHO.

Its based on the principle need-

Onno (Food, Biriyani was provided)
Bostro (Suit-er kapor)
Bassthan (Accomodation, plot gifted)
Chikitsa (given to Mash)
Education was dah, so Car was given instead

And thats such an ugly tie. Our board never had any good looking tie. Simple plain metallic red would've been much better than this.

Yeah, you know who designed it, Lotta kamal, the stripe resembles his panjabi. Probably the most punishing part for Sakib is to spend time with Lota. Lol, see the pic (BCB Party) where he is pushing a cake in Shakib's mouth probably no spoon and unwashed hand.. yak

Is that even right - I thought that was England?

Anyway, I believe it's a little too much of rewards for a home series win against the Kiwis. I would have thought this kind of rewards would be for something like making the World Cup semi finals!

One can only hope that the plots are right next to our border with India in Kur'higram, the cars are "mur'hir tin" Maruti Suzukis (reconditioned once and Dholaikhalled three times) and the kapor'h is the finest polyester from the sweatshops in China.

Anyway, this type of disturbing and puerile euphoria is emblematic of Loitta's deeply embedded psychological imbalances swaying back and forth between two extremes. He proves once again that "extremism in the defense of idiocy is still a vice".

reward is good but if it's unhealthy it ain't....people in the top need to set up good precedence....so each time our team brings good results will each be given similar gifts (plots, cars, etc..) or do we just expect the team to perform only once in a blue moon? if the team is really good and starts performing it all the time but similar rewards aren't provided will that still be motivating the players or will they be demoralized then based on the prior expectation set up?

Playing cricket should be reward in itself. Besides it's not as if they are starving or something. They get a decent salary at any rate. But it's just that PM and her Privy Chamber HAD to get involved to stamp their authority by being a part of history in the process. D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-E.

If you spend $10 in a restaurant, you give $2 tip to the waitress.

If you spend $10 in a restaurant and the food is great and the waitress is friendly, you give $5 tip to the waitress.

If you spend $10 in a restaurant and the waitress gives you a lap dance, you give $200 tip to the waitress.

Professional players are essentially entertainers. People got unthinkable entertainment from these entertainers whose earning to performance always follow at least the logarithmic scale. Politicians have their own agenda.

Australian president John Howard used to have dinner with the players every time they performed well in ICC tournaments, Ashes and some bi-literal series against Indians.

This was our first series win against a strongest team.

There is no problem to have dinner, there is no problem to give out money or plots but that money or gifts need to reach the players as I heard that the players still did not receive the prize money for WI series.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just one thing came to my mind right away... are you effing kidding me....????
Just when we were basking in the glory of how professional our team has become and while we celebrate every small success of the team... this gift galore reminds me of the ICC 97 era....

Shakib is the only one who deserves this, heck... give him 2 plots and 2 cars, but the entire squad ???? Wasnt it just yesterday Lotus Kamal said this time BCB is handling this very professionally, and the players will only get the bonus pay as per the contract.

Anyway I am probably overreacting, and Shakib's son will start playing for Bangladesh before he gets that plot (they are still waiting for the money promised after the West Indies series) .... but I wonder how professional does 'shosta' things like these make us...

In a country where all the wrong characters get ( steal ) the favours and riches, here we are arguing over the people who have actually achieved something positive, and not only that, they represent our colors! They are not gonna be spoiled. They know what got them there and they will strive to do better. Also, someone said that playing cricket is a reward itself. Not really. While one should have fun playing any sports, its their profession, and part of being a professional means you work hard towards a goal for the betterment of your family and yourself. A true professional would work harder next time to increase his profits. We should stay out of their way. We enjoy, applaud and share in joy when they get rewards for performance.

Remember players did not get their money yet when they won against WI. So its just a declaration of a gift. Its a long way to get their "actual" gift. They may get suit-er kapor right now, but plot, cash and car will be another year to come to actually get them. So there will be interesting to see how they play against ZIM to claim their old gifts.

Totally agree. If Shakib played his pre-Westershire game, we would have lost this series easily. The other batsmen were just as bad as they were in any other series.

It would be more appropriate to send a few cars to the Worcestershire coach and/or players who have transformed Shakib's batting skills and temperament.

Yeah...that someone would be me. I anticipated the highlighted rebuttal hence I was careful enough to write in the very next sentence that they get a decent salary. They are well capable of supporting their family and to requote myself they are "not starving."

As far the rest of his post, may be the following link shows why we are yet to produce someone of this calibre. Because guys like the following don't play for "profit" or for ulterior motive. They sacrifice their life for to forever master and finetune their craft. It all comes down to passion and not 'business' of seeing how much you can exploit an art to maximize more profit out of it.

The secret to Sachin's success (http://blogs.cricinfo.com/surfer/archives/2010/10/the_secret_to_s.php)

"Tendulkar loves the game. Even after all these years, all these grounds, hotels, fielding drills and press conferences, it's not an effort for him to play or practise," writes Peter Roebuck in the Sydney Morning Herald (http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/heres-the-secret-to-sachins-success-always-stay-focused-on-the-next-ball-20101007-169uy.html). "Cricket is his game and his way of life. He does not need anything else. Always it has been the same. The most underestimated thing about him has been his longevity, his constancy."Has any cricketer of his calibre changed less? Has any sportsman of his duration shown so few signs of mental wear and tear? Garry Sobers comes closest. For him, too, the game never became an ordeal.Of course, the body grumbles but the Indian's mind has remained attentive. To an extraordinary extent, Tendulkar plays for the same reasons as in his youth. It's not that he has failed to grow; just that from the outset he saw the game in its true light, as an end in itself.http://blogs.cricinfo.com/surfer/archives/2010/10/the_secret_to_s.php

Tendulkar is very wealthy, you know. Its much easier to play for fun when you are as wealthy as he is, of course, achieved by legal means. And, Tendulkar's of the world are not dimes a dozen. The vast majority of cricketers are professionals, including Tendulkar , and they work for a common goal while most have fun playing the game they love. But, ultimately its a source of income and the better you are at it, the higher the chance for your bigger profit. Most Aussies/Indians are paid handsomely by their board contracts, yet, they join the IPL or play in county crickets. Competition is good. Competing for money is the reality, even in cricket.

^ Not point arguing in circles. We are on different page. :)

My point was when someone picks up a sports like cricket they have certain level of self-actualization to strive for...you know 'vague' things like vision, ambition, legacy to leave.... I wasn't talking about the fun factor. There are certain things one wants like to be the best at the field they work. To be number 1. Such things cannot be quantified with money.

May be you are seeing this more from the context of American sports of multi-million dollar industry. It's not that I am not for materialist motivation it's just that these incentives only take you so far. But childhood dreams and ambitions is what propels one to break barriers.

Beamer

^ Yep. Obviously on different page.

No, I don't think that things like vision, ambition, legacy are 'vague'. One can achieve all that and in fact, one needs to set those things as a goal, but in order to achieve those goals in modern era, one needs to be a thorough professional. And, a professional won't set a low standard for himself, for example, he wont be content with an attitude like, "oh..I am not starving " !

Professional players earn money and rewards by playing cricket. For EXCEPTIONAL performances it is acceptable to receive something unexpected. The England Team got national honours bestowed on them from their PM and extra bonuses, for winning a series against the Aussies. And the next time they did it again, they did not. Some things are done just to mark the occasion - let's rejoice with the team for being acknowledged when we have had 24 years of little to cheer about.

The nation is grateful. We are happy. Let the boys enjoy their gifts. This is what being a winning team is all about.

Both of you have said it very nicely. :)

Although the government that can afford to giveaway gifts worth that much value to 11 players can also solve nations largest problems :) like poverty and hunger, and the biggest one of them all, corruption. Although corruption is more of a spiritual disease than a material one!

yes i agree with the underlined part.

if our boys have childhood dreams of being the absolute best in the world, or at least being the absolute best they can be, then no amount of money or plots or fan idolatry will derail them until they achieve their goals, or die trying to achieve their goals.

on the flip side, if they do not already possess these aspirations from childhood, then regardless of whether we show them the carrot or the stick, they will not achieve what we want them to achieve.

so its a moot point really.

i would like to believe our boys are at least professional enough to realize that their jobs are far from over. that they should aim to win an ODI series against each and every G8 side by the time their careers are over in another 10-15 years. 1 down, 7 left to go. and also win a test match against each G8 side and a few series here and there. i think this is an achievable goal for the next 10-15 years.

oh and win this 2011 world cup!!!

Hell...the politicians aren't using the money for the good of the country anyway. They're only pocketing it for themselves. So, yes...I dont think they're doing too much. Those players deserve every poisa.

I thought the gifts were a bit too much. Maybe if they only got a plot or only got a car, that would have been okay, but both? oh well :) I am happy to see that the Government is actually supporting them and motivating them to achieve the best of their ability.

As long as they can keep this performance up, I really couldn't careless what rewards they recieve. As long as its not more cars :S Dhakakay emni onek jam :(

nahaz
October 21, 2010, 05:58 AM
BK bhai just got me thinking..do they all receive identical plots and cars, or is it loosely performance based? Shakib and Rubel were the best performers and deserve the best. Maybe a Mercedes each. Plus 30 lakh for plots. In the next category we have Shafi, Imrul, Mashrafee (for injuring himself), Mushfique, Nafees, Shuvo and Razzak and they deserve something pretty good as well, like Razuk plots and a decent car to drive around. The rest didn't do too well and maybe they can get reconditioned car(maybe 4WD)+driver and holiday houses (/rentals) in some posh chittagong area.
Anyway, if we keep promising everything every time the players achieve something they will get distracted. I am not worried that they don't deserve it. But they WILL get distracted. On the other hand, should they not be able to say that they chose a career path that makes millions of people happy, and they DID get their reward? I would rather we give them the money than the bookies... I would also rather that some of the non-regulars get some money from this (Shuvo, Rasel, Naeem, Rubel+Shafi (being pacers), Jahurul). who knows how much they would earn in 5 years' time. We do not want them to quit cricket and do business...

Purbachol Plot = 9 Lakh
Mid Range Car = 10 Lakh

That is 40 Million for 20 players. 160 Million people in the country. Thats a grand total of 25 Poisha per person! For the lads who worked so hard 2 months to prepare for this series and did the unthinkable, fought with their heart and gave all they had and then achieved some thing which was never ever acheived before! Dont forget it is Kiwis who opposed our test status the most, thier captain did not allow his team members a photoshoot in 1999 with Bangladesh, Martin Crowe always wanted to take our test status back, they even questioned our ODI status many time. Heck they did not even give us a practice match earlier this year, even got annoyed when asked for one!

You were overjoyed, cried with happiness, posted hundered and thousands of post on BC, Cricino, Facebook. Bragged in front of your Pak and Indian friends! Could not sleep, could not eat, the tension, the stress and then the much unexpected joy. So I dont think it was too much. I have been observing this thread for a while now but I don't see any real discussion on why this action by the PM is questionable. Couple of points I like to mention...

1. The intention. Does the PM really wants to help BD cricket or just wants to bask in the glory achieved by the cricketers. So that they mark this success with the AL achievement seal?

2. Was there any visible efforts by any govt. (not just the AL govt.) to enrich the infrastructure of BD cricket? How many bowling machines do we have? or what's the ground conditions at root level? Do they have coaching staff access?

3. We are yet to achieve a good quality first class cricket structure. What steps are taken to improve it?

4. What goods it will do to increase the quality of BD cricket?

5. Only thing I like is the PM mentioning about the pension structure. I would have liked had the other declarations came as a policy that benefits a cricketer's career. Instead of just one time stunt-bazi.

6. This rewards declaration is a statement to the world that this is our highest level of achievement we even dream about and we really don't care if we go forward from this point.

7. PM's so called off the record statement that Nz opposed BD so I am happy that we whitewashed them. Excuse me! as a PM you cannot say something like that. its not kindergarten or BD politics of tit for tat.

8. all these rewards means just one thing you have expended a lot which will return nothing to the BD cricket.

All the above points are even w/o going into the details of our economy structure. That will just add more questions. Lets assume everybody pay taxes and we can really afford these expenses as a country.

then she should ask BCB to give her a plan. Its not the first time politicians have done this kind of rewards thing. She knows it better than the others.

EDIT: and if she can't make sports ministry work that's even more failure.

I personally think these gifts (I mean to this extent) were a very bad idea. Yes - the series win WAS unprecedented, and surely the greatest achievement for Tigers so far. However, we have been a test playing nation for 11 y ears and this was an one-day series at home, not even a triangular series, let alone a World Cup. Yes we are overly joyed, and PM did a great thing by throwing such a party. But one plot per person for winning an one-day series. Not only it sounds extravagant for a poor country like ours, it sounds insulting to our cricket standard to some extent.

Zeeshan

it sounds insulting to our cricket standard to some extent.

^Thank you dynamite-da. It has nothing to do with us being "jealous" or anything, an epithet I find utterly scurrilous. It has more to do with self-respect. So what does it say about our cricket that we are set the bar so damn ffin low that we are pleased with instant gratification. Puh-leez.

The reason why I found it so revoling was because:

1. PM's extravaganza.
2. It exactly does what you suggested, insults the standard of our cricket. It's like being rewarded with a trip to Venezuela just because you kept a GPA over 3.0. To me that is not praise...it's an insult.

the way the world works... as long as you work hard you reap the benefit. You stop working no body will look.

govt. job is to not ensure a guaranteed and secure future for all the players. govt job is to ensure standard/quality living who continues to work hard and as long as they continue to work hard. And by proving a good salary structure in flow of cricketers will not stop. Now how does a plot ensures that? if you are happy with such a short term vision I have nothing to say.

and if we want to make a secure life for cricketers no one should ever be dropped from the squad, ever!! right? thats followed from your logic. Then everybody will play like tendu...

Money should have been used to improve domestic cricket. More players including the A team and Academy team should be paid a salary, like what they do in SL, heck, even their U/19 team get a stipend and gets all their gear.
They barely pay their national players well, the rest have to depend on domestic cricket. This is shameful.

Playing cricket should be reward in itself. Besides it's not as if they are starving or something. They get a decent salary at any rate. But it's just that PM and her Privy Chamber HAD to get involved to stamp their authority by being a part of history in the process. D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-E.

Lota Kamal is trying to show his authority. This kinda crap is sickening to me :hairpull:. I was excited after we won the series but got disturbed by the praise from our PM and her chamcha.

I personally dnt like our PM. but that does not mean, i wont show respect to her. At least, she is twice of my age. Have some respect, you will also get respect from others.

First came Sunday's landmark one-day series victory over New Zealand; now it's raining gifts for Bangladesh's cricketers.
The team's first clean sweep (4-0) over a major cricketing nation has seen them showered with accolades and presents.
Such adulation is a pleasant change for the Bangladeshis, normally viewed as international cricket's whipping boys.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has gifted a housing plot in Dhaka and a car to every player in the 20-member team.
Knocked for six
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced more incentives for the triumphant team.
"Each player will get around $5,000 (£3,180) from the board. This is for winning the one-day series against New Zealand," board spokesman Jalal Yunus told the BBC.
He said a private bank gave 100,000 takas ($1400; £890) to each member of the team.
A private company gave the same amount to the players.
"The government has also agreed to set up a sports welfare trust to help the players after their careers or during times of injury," Mr Yunus said.
"Sports personalities from other disciplines will also benefit from this trust."
Other private firms have promised to give presents to the Bangladeshi players.
Bangladesh's cricket team were also showered gifts when they beat Kenya to win the ICC trophy in 1997.

I thought this was already in operation, all Cricket boards have this benefit.

Well, that would be a total waste, given that I did 1 of 1000 [at best] they did to our nation, yet, what if I say I make no less that Shakib make?!;) But joke apart, at such young age they are doing much much better than I/we could do. They should be proud of themselves regardless what we say, and I still say they should man them up and perform much better!

Saw this pic on the other thread; and remembered how good Saber was. I wish Saber Chowdhury was still associated with our cricket. He was best cricket admin. we ever had. May be we should send him mass email and ask him to take over the board; now, that would be a real gift for BD cricket ;)
He is actually a BC member also.
